Will, I concur with your decision of not worrying about the gear ratio. I assume I have the high=speed ones as they came original--they do just fine for switching and high speed running.

The only reason to consider a slower ratio is if you have a really old control system where the starting voltage starts the engine too fast. In that case you would be better off with a better control system. Even String boB realizes the benefits of transistor throttles, braking and momentum features. So just maybe someday he'll see those same benefits and more with most DCC control systems.

It shouldn't be necessary to take the added step of installing the low speed worm. I received a response from a list member who had found that the combination of low speed worm and older worm gear did make a fair amount of noise.

Based on the feedback I received about their advantages, if all goes well I'll consider replacing the geared wheel sets with NWSL parts where possible (my engines have two different axle bearing setups).
