 It was agreed long ago on sage-devel that packages would be built with
 debugging information by default, since it makes finding bugs a lot
 easier. I initially thought that was a bad idea, as it increases the size
 of the objects. But it is negligible, and it makes no difference to run-
 time, so I concede it is sensible. That's the reason for the -g

 Some software packages add -g anyway, in which case it could be removed,
 though I'm not sure its a good idea, since if the software changes that
 behaviour, we have lost the ability to easily debug problems.
