2) would be good to find if this is indeed the problem.
Doing it is another story. Do you have iconv on OSX?
I would think so as it is needed by R amongst other.
so go into the right folder and try:
{{{
iconv -f UTF-8 -t ISO-8859-1 *.h
}}}
