 Also, because unix tutorials are bad for true beginners, I have no idea
 how to do something that in pseudo-Python would be

 output = `uname =r`
 if output[:2] == 10:
     do ...
 }}}
 in shell script.  How do I take the output of `uname -r` and just get the
 first two characters (which would be 10 for OS X 10.6)?  Maddening - and
 of course it's impossible to figure out how to get this from the tutorials
 online without reading for hours.  Sorry - hopefully tomorrow I'll be able
 to get that figured out and test that patch, which depends on checking the
 `CFLAGS` passed to the fcompiler/gnu.py script.
