I'll make '''some''' of the changes you suggest. I will change {{{make}}}
to {{{$MAKE}}}, but that will need '''extensive''' testing, as parallel
builds tends to break on many packages. I'll test it 100 times on my
reasonably quick (quad core 3.33 GHz) Sun Ultra 27, but I don't have time
to test it extensively on every system.
