Now I think that might not be the case. See below.

Okay, I experimented, and the change from angstrom to square root of
umlaut O (which I think causes the problem) happens during the exporting
of a patch. See the sample I'm uploading next. SO what needs to happen
is for the sagenb package to 'manually' add this file, rather than by
importing a patch, I guess?
In fact, Jonathan, if there are no changes in the !SageMenu.mnu file
involved, we might want to let it remain untracked, except put a comment
in the .hgignore file about ''why'' it's untracked. Unless you imagine
needing to change it often (? I have no idea) it might be worth sparing
the hassle over angstroms.
Given Jonathan's comments, this could be some kind of Unicode bug on
Mac...
