But apparently that has not been sufficient. Now, just for fun, I did
`make` and interrupted after a few seconds -- and when I then tried to
install the modified gcc spkg (with --libdir), then the configuration
worked.

I have no idea. Is `patch` installed on your system (I mean outside of
Sage)?
