The Latest from The Screwdriver List!
RAID, meaning (R)edundant (A)rray of (I)nexpensive (D)isks, (Though the 'I' is
also sometimes said to mean (I)ndependant) comes in a number of defined
standards, known as 'Levels'. The most commonly supported levels are 0, 1, 0+1
and 5. Each has it's own individual advantages and disadvantages.
Rather than try and explain All the RAID Levels here, I'll point you to:
http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html Where you will find a complete list of all
the RAID Levels, including some of the more exotic ones such as 6 and 7 - which
are almost never used in the real world.
As for whether you need RAID At home, that depends on what you are doing. With
the ABit KT7 and KT7A RAID boards, the most common use is not to use the RAID
Facility, but to use the RAID Controller simply as a second Pair of IDE
Controllers. This way, if you happen to have four IDE Devices (ie. Two HDD's, a
CD-ROM and a ZIP Drive), you can have each device as a Master device on it's own
on a single IDE Ribbon Cable - Theoretically this give you a better performance
on each device.

The Latest from The Screwdriver List!
I recently bought a new Abit board at a computer show and the guy tried to
talk me into spending 30 bucks more on the RAID version. I decided against
it but now I'm wondering what RAID could do. It has something to do with
mirroring the hard drive, I know that, but would it help to have it on my
home PC?
