What I found in a newsgroup--author's name in quote: "raid is where 2 or
more hard drives are used in an array to speed the data
read & write functions OR increase data security via one drive mirroring
another OR both. raid 0 is where 2 or more drives are used as a bigger
"garden hose" to speed reading and writing of data. raid 1 is where one
drive is used to mirror (carry a copy of) the first drive. no real speed
gains are received in this setup. raid 0 + 1 is a combination of both where
more than 2 drives are used to increase the data speed and to mirror as
well."
