Grab your Phillips, it's...
The Latest from The Screwdriver List!

Sam, Tim,

You are both right in a way. Tim is thinking of RAID Levels 0 - which is a
'Non-Redundant' level, if a single disk fails, then all data on the entire Array
is lost.

Sam, you are thinking of most of the Other RAID Levels, which have some
'Redundancy' built in. This means that if a single Disk fails, you won't lose
any data - the most common implementations of this are RAID 0+1 and RAID 5. The
IDE RAID Controllers rarely support RAID 5, usually you need to use RAID 0+1,
which is fairly inefficient in terms of it's use of Hard Disks compared to RAID
5.

In the case of large corporate file servers, where RAID 5 is being used, in the
event of a disk failure, the administrator needs to do no more than simple
unplug the defective disk, and plug in a replacement drive. This can all be
done while the server is still running - indicators on the front of the server
show which unit has failed, and typically these controllers are 'Hot-Swappable'
(Don't try this with the IDE RAID At home Folks - You'll likely fry your
Motherboard /and/ your Hard Disks!!).

I think Tim is correct when, as he says, you have Raid set up that
particular way. But, another way to set it up, I THINK, is such that if one
harddrive is lost, the other will still contain the data. Knowing very
little about it, altho' I have a mobo w/that capability, the advantage can
be speed and/or protection; if I am correct, there are 4 ways to set it
up--just wanted to mention this 2nd advantage which may be subject to error.
Hope this brings out someone with one, complete answer--I'm interested too.
Thx, Sam
