I think Sean nailed the definition on the head a few posts ago. Cabarets are popular among the older crowd in Detroit. Rather than having to spend their Friday and Saturday nights dancing with 18 year old kids at the club, they rent out spaces throughout the city and create their own party. Like Sean said getting all dressed up and B.Y.O.B'n it. Dancing all night long to old school and house, and most recently booty. So, UR having their own cabaret doesnt seem that far fetched, they are just providing a place for the older crowd ( not necessarily age-wise, but maybe widsom-wise, i.e. not raver kids) to do their thing Friday night. As Radioboy, Herbert may have the most mercurial stage prescence I've seen. The delight you feel is the unbridled joy of destroying those Icons. To be honest, I disliked the Radioboy material as downloads, but the tracks really come to life when you see the performance, and realize how subject to chance the sounds are. And Richie Hawtin has nothing on him for volume. I had foam plugs in and it was still loud. I thought something was falling from the ceiling and hitting my forhead, but it was the sound from the PA hitting my skin. I'm not too sure about this. Linda and I managed to score double-sided passes and crept off to watch Rich from his stage for an hour or so. I should have taken you up on the plugs, Kent. Control was the archetypal Richie Hawtin experience. The smoke and blue strobes remove your visual sense, the volume effectively renders your ears useless. All you're left with is the intensity of the bass, which regulates your breathing, and Richie deciding when you inhale and exhale. This forced surrender was fun for me once, but it left me a little cold last night. There literally was no tonal content, and very little variation in the beats. From my perspective, no real groove or funk. Shake was Shake, which is to say a just about perfect musicians' DJ. He was all over the place genre-wise but always with an ear for heartbreakingly beautiful melody. I knew I missed something while I was next door. Dammit! Fortunately, when we left at about 6am, we decided to pop back in to see how Carl was wrapping things up. Stevie Wonder's Another Star was the perfect antidote for my mood, and a great melody to have ringing around in your head as the morning sun illuminates the sewer steam on the drive home through Detroit. -- im - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It added alot to the film, especially considering the topic of machines and automation. The repetitive beats complimented the theme nicely. I also made the trip out to Detroit Historical for this. Jeff's edit of the film is pretty substantial, from an original running time of about 2.5 hours to just over an hour or so (the Moroder version was 80 minutes). The first 10 minutes are transformed from a series of motion shots of the city to more of a layering of stills. I found that dialogue was pared back to the minimum necessary to retain the basic plot. The soundtrack married well, particularly scenes in the Fredersen Garden, the workers at the machine, and Futura's cabaret dance. I found myself wishing that Jeff would compose additional and varied tracks to fill out the original length of the film, because I feel it suffered from heavy editing. The Techno exhibit was nicely done for the space allowed. Particularly liked the wall of bios, and the original Tom Thewes piece for DEMF 2000. It's more brilliant than I remember. I teamed up with Carol and the Pop Culture Media folks in early 2000 about doing the website for the first DEMF. We registered demf.org (the main site) and demf.net and used those domains for the first year's festival. At the time, DEMF.com was registered by someone in Argentina I believe. The second year of the festival saw a turn in strategy for the website. Carol was interested in using electronicmusicfest.com, org and net because it was a more generic name. This would open up the site to be used in conjunction with an event(s) in Detroit or wherever. This was to be the main site for the empire of *EMF sites. There was almost no interest in using demf.org the second year. I kept demf.org online through the second year because it was still seeing a fair amount of traffic from old links from the first year. I let the demf.org and .net domains expire after the second year because they were no longer needed and the business had no use for them. It seems the domains were snatched up fairly quickly by random techno fans. ElectronicMusicfest.com was used exclusively during the third year of the DEMF. All domains (demf.org, demf.net, electronicmusicfest.com, .net, and .org were never owned by Carol or Pop Culture. They were registered by other individuals) The official website for Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival is http://www.movementfestival.com look for a new site to launch in mid April with lineup, et al. I don't believe that Transmat owns DEMF.com. It seems to be leased from some domain broker in Scotland judging by the registrar records. Re: (313) artists vs. bootlegging
I find myself waiting for Otto to chime in here (the man has a doctorate in issues relating to supply and demand after all). But I don't want to put him on the spot. ;) So here's my humble opinion: Unfortunately, this may be the result of fallout from the heavyhanded tactics of the record industry. Let me try to clarify. Underground Artist X forms a label and minimizes supply as an artistic statement or business decision (whichever, does not matter). Greedy Fan Y decides to cash in on higher demand by bootlegging. Greedy Fan Y is breaking the law. Y could have asked for licensing rights and given a cut back to artist X. But artist X will not do business with Y, in part because of a complete mistrust fostered by the record industry's history of ripping off artists. This is the pure (albeit ugly) nature of free markets, no? Survival of the opportunist? I am NOT condoning bootlegging. The piece that's missing is the free flow of information from the willing buyer to the copyright owner. This is what a lot of artists are trying to figure out lately. Of course I am not taking into account the economics of vinyl production and single copy distribution. Final thoughts: If that pre-order deepchord CD was available from their site, I'd order now. I am about to own a legit copy of Beltran's 10 Days of Blue after waiting 6 years to hear it. -- im

Re: [313] Motor Rumors
I never really thought of Hamtramck as scary. Any city that has a monument of the Pope is alright with me. Ive never had any problems around motor, granted I havent been there in a while. ah well. I think its that fear of Detroit spilling over into Hamtramck. 2cents. agci Original message Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 19:06:23 GMT From: Fred Heutte [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] Motor Rumors To: 313@hyperreal.org I had the opposite result when I was at the Motor this summer. Gene Farris was listed (but as far as I know never was there), and whoever was playing bored me to tears, so i went to the Clock for late/early breakfast and went out and flagged down a taxi within 3 minutes. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It really does work - right tempo, right propulsive groove, wicked percussion. Jingo, right? This was the track that I recommended to Jay Langa (backseat DJ that I am), when he was on his French Disco-house kick. Just a quick story--I spent a frustrating, long Amtrak trip from Detroit to Chicago several years ago, but was fortunate enough to be seated next to a fellow music geek. He was doing his PHD at Michigan in American popular music, pre-jazz. He showed some interest in techno, but had trouble knowing how to approach it. He asked me for a definitive release, and I suggested Deep Space. I wonder where that guy is now. -- im - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Balihu 002?
There was the 'I Was A Disco Malcontent' album on Oxygen but that's basically just a comp of Balihu stuff. And there's also the 'Idealism' album on Environ of course... I think he also has a track on the Freezone 6 comp, but I don't have that... That track is My 909 Blues, but honestly it's probably the weakest track on the comp IMO. Mostly an FM synth retro patch-fest, that reminds me too much of the theme from Doogie Howser. Other great stuff on that Freezone release though, from Mark Pritchard, Jack Jones, Common Factor, Isolee, and the 18th copy of Camping Jazz that I have on CD. Sorry for morphing the thread, but any news about a domestic release of Freezone 7 on CD yet? Out since 10/31/01 according to crammed/SSR. -- im - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I know they were on for a long time, just wondered if it's possible to dig up anything like this in old radio show logbooks or journals or something. I can name about 20 tracks that I remeber him playing alot, but I'd love to see the range of, say, an ENTIRE SHOW from start to finish... how long were those shows? Nice historical blurb here: http://www.metrotimes.com/19/Dma99/achieve.html I recall a flash heavy Midnight Funk Association website from over a year ago. Good news is, it looks like Mojo still has www.electrifyingmojo.com registered, but under construction. As far as a top 20, why don't those of us who remember the show list a few? I'll get the obvious ones out first: Kraftwerk, Numbers B52s, Mesopotamia George Clinton, Atomic Dog A Number of Names, Shari-Vari Model 500, Alleys of your Mind Visage, Frequency 7 Prince, Controversy Was Not Was, Out Come the Freaks Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Rock The Eurythmics, Sweet Dreams -- im - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: (313) 8-Mile
Amen to that. Im also a little puzzled that no one has mentioned the attention that this movie is bringing to the city. Yeah, people are crying that it makes the city look like a prison. But as someone who has seen the film, I thought Detroit looked like Detroit, and it was actually kind of cool sitting in a major theater going, Wow, I know where that is... And the fact that he has said in interviews that his purpose in the movie was to show the world the real Detroit transcends whatever his opinion on techno is.
