[Wikimedia-GH] Fwd: [Wikimania-l] Scholarship for 2020 Wikimania now open

Subject: [Wikimania-l] Scholarship for 2020 Wikimania now open
To: Wikimania general list (open subscription) <
wikimani...@lists.wikimedia.org>

Wikimania is fast approaching, this year it'll be held in Bangkok and as
always the Wikimedia Foundation has a limited number of opportunities to
assist people to attend. There are two types of scholarships the first
being a full scholarship which covers, travel, accommodation, and
registration, the second a partial scholarship that covers accommodation
and registration.

This year for the first time East, South East Asia, and Pacific (ESEAP) as
collaboration between the region we'll be your host for Wikimania. The
region has placed a high importance on collaboration and knowledge sharing
this years Wikimania program will reflect that. Our theme is;
*Power of Diverse Collaboration*
*Sharing knowledge brings people together*

How does this impact on scholarship? ESEAP is looking for people who are
prepared to share their knowledge to help develop potential future
leaders. We'll be looking for two broad areas of contributions, from those
who have successfully developed programs, and those newer contributors who
want to develop their skills to do more but have never been to a Wikimania
to broaden their support networks.

As you apply please agree to share your details with the local affiliate
should they also have scholarships available. When answering questions if
you have urls to reports, dashboards, and events please provide them.
Rather than writing lots of words again let your past recordings speak.

On behalf of the ESEAP community, and the Scholarship committee we look
forward to seeing you in Bangkok in August.

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] Akan vs Twi Wikipedia - Next Steps?

2019-11-11 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Great.

That said, what are the next steps? Migrating the content from AK to TW?
Manually or there's a tool that can do the migration automatically?

Do we need to spread the word more about the migration and or switch to TW?

And finally, where or who do we reach out to, when ready to shut down the
ak.wikipedia.org (that's if it should even be shut down)?

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] Akan vs Twi Wikipedia - Next Steps?

2019-11-08 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Good questions, Raphael

   - Will this new Twi Wikipedia be specific in terms of being Asante,
   Akuapim or Fante?

Yes, it’ll be specific to one, namely, Asante Twi. However, that raises the
question, ‘How about Akuapim or Fante?’, which is legit to ask.

Encompassing all would have been ideal, but that will give in to chaos.
But, here’s a probable solution.

Will it thus make sense to mix them, but not in-articles, in separate
articles? What I mean is, Person/Place A’s article could be labeled as
Akuapim, yet another article of Person/Place B labeled as Asante.

So an article labeled as Akuapim will mean, whoever edits it, **must**
stick to Akuapim for that article. By default, every article will be in
Asante unless otherwise indicated

That way, it doesn’t appear that the other dialects are sidelined. Just a
probable solution though there, **but**, the Twi will be Asante by default.

   - Are we going to have one Wikipedia for all? Or we will be looking at
developing these individual Akan languages subsequently?

So yeah, one for Asante, with room for article-specific dialect options.

Hello Rex,

I think this is a great initiative as a contributor to the Twi Wikipedia I
get confused a lot of time. I believe if we streamline one it will help us
all.

I however have some concerns. Will this new Twi Wikipedia be specific in
terms of being Asante, Akuapim or Fante? Or it will encompass all? I am
asking this because although all these Akan languages look similar they are
different in many ways. I edit in Asante Twi and find it difficult to write
or even understand certain works in Fante and Akuapem.

Are we going to have one Wikipedia for all? Or we will be looking at
developing these individual Akan languages subsequently?

Regards.

Hello all,

In Telegram (the African Wikimedia group), we’ve been having discussions on
going forward with both wikipedias. It is clear one of them needs to be
dropped. Which to drop, we to an extent agree it should be the
ak.wikipedia.org, and the tw.wikipedia.org maintained.

First of all, is that a good step? Any objection(s) to that?

The goal, if I understand clearly, of going forward with only one means
having a streamlined effort in editing. Managing a Wikipedia language space
is not easy, let alone two, and with the limited number of hands on deck
for the local language, a single point of contribution appears much more
worthwhile.

There are articles on both wikipedias at the moment, when the
tw.wikipedia.org is the choice going forward (assuming there’s no
objection), the next step would be to merge the few articles on
ak.wikipedia.org into the tw.wikipedia.org

When all of that is copied over and merged, we can put in a word to ask for
the ak.wikipedia.org can be shutdown (If that’s possible. I guess it is)

The above sounds like the way forward? Any thoughts?

So maybe not likely an FOP but the planning records might still be under
copyright.

In any case, we'll have to find out exactly what the resulting license will
be.

Unfortunately, I don't know her personally, but hoping someone in the
community might know her personally, and reach out to find out more.

Fingers crossed.

I'm not sure what the eventual license of the digitized documents will be

connect with Manful to learn more of the license, and see if can siphon

That's interesting. Was it a year or 2 ago that ~35k$ was requested?
Anyways, I remember there was a discussion to reduce the cost somewhere,
suggested by the WMF grants team.

The grants were then split into 3 or 4 parts, to be funded individually.
Didn't follow up with what they all amounted to.

25k$ is, frankly speaking, still high for an event like WLA. Wiki Loves
Monuments caps under 10k$, the last I checked.

> This does not in anyway stop any country from organizing a nationwide
photography contest on contents that are not adequately available for use
on Wikimedia projects.

Yep, but the big question is, will the WMF fund such nationwide photography
contest? Heck, will the WMF fund individual grants of professionals who
wanna help in such regards? Frankly speaking, will the WMF fund?

Yes. I also do share your impressions.

> *2. Do others have the impression that the present approach for Wiki
Loves Africa does not help much to close the knowledge gap about Africa? *

Again, yes, I also do have the same impressions. Only difference might be
that, to me, I see the current approach of Wiki Loves Africa, probably a
symptom of a bigger, likely flawed approach (not *entirely* flawed) of
competitions and projects of the like across africa.

> *I was an early fan of the idea of "Wiki Loves Africa" but I have to
confess that my fan status has cooled over time. I cannot claim to have
done a comprehensive reseach but did some checks here and there.*

I was too. In fact, I was a part of the early days team that helped with
the Wiki Loves Africa, and I cannot say I'm excited today about WLA, as I
was in the beginning.

A team from the WMF are here in Ghana on a research, and I remember
mentioning about Wiki Loves Africa with regards to the impact (in terms of
actual usefulness of content generated via such competitions) in relation
to its cost (cost across board i.e volunteer time in relation to community
building, jury, reporting etc and also cost of funding)

Organizing such events involves a ton of work, funding, volunteers, and
effort. Thus, at the end, I believe the impact (again, in terms of actual
usefulness of content generated via such competitions) should be worth more
than the work involved (depending on who or what metrics used, WLA may be
terrifically successful, so...). I can't say that's the case in the recent
competitions, imho.

Inko, I think there's a broader (way broader than WLA) conversation that
needs to happen about events/competitions geared toward community building
and engagement etc happening here in Africa and the *true, real,
sustainable impactful* way forward. A healthy mix of community building and
content generation is highly important.

It appears community building now has a bigger share, with relatively less
emphasis on content contribution sustainability, quality, usefulness and
integration into relevant, related articles on Wikipedia or other WMF
project websites.

Sadly, I remember noticing number of tweets and or likes on FB were part of
success metrics for a previous Wiki Loves Africa (i.e social media
engagement) report.

Again, I see your (and mine too) impressions of the WLA at the moment
warrants a discussion of a symptom of a broader misdirection of approach.

> *I do not want to denigrate Wiki loves Africa but i would love to hear
from others how they see the value of the results as they have been so
far. Why do we do it - what do we get from it? **How can images about
"play" be useful for closing the white spaces on the African map of
knowledge?*

I agree. I also wouldn't want to denigrate. I personally hope the drawing
board could be revisited related to WLA. I had high hopes. I truly did.
Can't say I do anymore.

I believe there can be better alternatives, or WLA could be restructured to
bring to fore all the goodness of events of the kind - building community
and contributing useful content, at a relatively lower cost, with precision
targets of sustainable content generation.

ps: I've taken a great deal of time to go through end-of-event reports of
WLA on their grant pages for the 3 recently completed ones.

cheers,
rexford

Yet another thread that interests me.

Glad I got to share my thoughts on that with the wmf team in Ghana.

Dear fellow Wikimedians, dear Florence,

as the Wiki loves Africa 2019 competition is coming to its close I would
like to bring back the question which I raised already in December 2018:

*1. Do others share my impression that images from the competition are
hardly ever used in wikipedia articles?*

*2. Do others have the impression that the present approach for Wiki Loves
Africa does not help much to close the knowledge gap about Africa? *
When I posted in December some participants here voiced interest but wanted
to wait for a feedback fom the organizers. Such a feedback I have not seen.
So allow me to repeat some lines from my first post:

*I was an early fan of the idea of "Wiki Loves Africa" but I have to
confess that my fan status has cooled over time. I cannot claim to have
done a comprehensive reseach but did some checks here and there.*

*So I have the impression that a) the competition has brought a number of
really beautiful photographs b) the competition has brought lots of images
which are not used anywhere in wikipedia articles (my short checks give me
the impression that could be the case for the vast majority of images
produced)*

* and** I ask myself if the reason may be that a lot of these mages is
frankly unusable.*

* I remember that prize selected image showing some beautiful ladies in
Massai attire knitting under a tree (the year of adornment) which was
selected in a winner category but is unusable for any purpose (unless you
want to document fake stereoptypes - the motive was fake...)*

* There is a lot of nice looking images which I do not know how to use
because of their not clear labelling, unhelpful categories and useless
explanations. It helps me as author nothing to see an image and a text like
"traditional tools of Ghana/Malawi/etc". This is unusable and useless.*

* I write this not from the point of view of a lover of beauty (my taste is
poor) but just simply from the view of a wikipedia author. I would love to
have some thousand images (not necessarily beautiful) which just show
African villages. We know the criticism about the white spots on the
African maps of knowledge. Villages back home in Germany may have less than
1000 inhabitants but 3 articles about the village, about its church and
about the sports club. Images are available and people look for them.*

*I do not want to denigrate Wiki loves Africa but i would love to hear from
others how they see the value of the results as they have been so far. Why
do we do it - what do we get from it? **How can images about "play" be
useful for closing the white spaces on the African map of knowledge?*

Cheers, Ingo - "Kipala"

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] Wikimedia Foundation is visiting Ghana (April 22 to May 3)

2019-04-08 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Good to know and thanks for the heads up.

> WMF will be conducting research in Ghana between April 22 to May 3. The
research focuses on movement organizers.

Any specific targets for this research regarding the "movement organizers"?
What would/does the WMF want to know as per the research about the movement
organizers here in Ghana?

Are there any pointers we should be aware of? Perhaps a link about the
research goals?

And by the "WMF", I'm guessing at least half a dozen of the WMF team (in
relation to the research) will be here, in Ghana, *in person*?

Glad to also learn the research spans almost 2 weeks. Looking promising
already.

cheers.

TOPIC: [Wikimedia-l] +28K images freed from Israel archives and
uploaded to commons

Hello,

It is a great pleasure for me to let you all know that wikimedia Israel had
developed a web scraper that crawled in various archives in Israel and
uploaded more than 28K free images to commons.

The tool (https://github.com/wmil-1946/wikiscraper) was developed to crawl
the web site (list below) and clean them, remove water marks, etc.

Only images taken before 1946 were uploaded, as per the law in Israel and
United states.

Many volunteers had joined the effort by categorizing, linking and using
the images once uploaded.

It even got coverage on Israeli media (here (
https://www.calcalist.co.il/internet/articles/0,7340,L-3749654,00.html))

Commons categories containing the files:

Ooh okay. No worries though.

The last I checked, there are airplane stations supermarkets in the air.
You can get amarula from there too, in case Namibia Air don't have one
aboard.

Just walk into any supermarket in the air when the plane makes a quick stop
over the south atlantic ocean.

Safe journey to the 6 Wikimedians from Ghana going for the Wikimania event
in Cape Town. So far I think that's the largest number of attendees from
Ghana ever!

Now that's amazing!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the conference, and Kaapstad in general. Bring back
all the experience, and can't wait to be enlightened when you guys return.

Safe journey, and see you soon.

I'll just take this quote for now, and coil back to my shell. And because
I'm not able to assist with any tasks these days doesn't necessarily
translate to the fact that I don't 'pay attention to the group' and that I
have 'a selective interest'. Well...

At least messages that come through the mailing list, I see and take note.

In my shell now, with a telescope overlooking my surroundings, including

This might not be the right thread to chip this in, and as much as I hate
to bring this up, WHY is the un-official so-called WhatsApp platform, which
was neither created for us as a UserGroup by the WMF, in *any* way "much
more active" than the mailing list?

Why do I feel that is an intentional, deliberate approach to make that
scenario come through?

What happened to sending emails, via an email, using email?

Whatever communications that happened within the WhatsApp group, now *no
one* not part of the group can, *in no* way can verify. However, every
communication on the mailing list, one can and will be able to verify.
Every communication is archived for future reference.

> you can attest to the fact that...

Yes, I can, because that's how it seems to have been schemed to go. The
mailing list has *always* worked. Not sure why it's lost interest over
time.

Seriously, I find the WhatsApp group to be a distraction, considering those
of us not part of the group can't know anything anymore, in terms of
ongoing discussions. And we don't expect Asaf or Alex or Katherine to join
*a* whatsapp group just to get informed on our activities.

The Wikipedia awareness ads from Nigeria are the best Wikipedia ads I've

I understand only 3 platforms are supported for blender now.

As a learning experience, I wanna build blender for arm (specifically a Pi

End goal is to build blender targeting arm architecture as a python module
on my ubuntu box, then run the headless module on the Pi.

Will appreciate pointers.

If your visa application was denied this year for Wikimania, guess what!

You're automatically joining next year's Wikimania. Now you know you've
been accepted to Wikimania 2018 in South Africa, I think we all have 365
days to get our Visa.

I'm yet to learn any embassy in the world with more than a year visa
application waiting time. ZA it is!

Great news.

I hope Maher added too that the WMF would start from today assisting such

automatically granting scholarships each year to some applicants from some

Re: [Wikimania-l] Visa rejections

2017-06-22 Thread Nkansah Rexford
In addition, providing this *true assistance* won't be for *all* attendees.
In many cases, only a select few of the total attendees will have the
visa-related issues.

Thus, say out of 100 applicants, just less than 20 individuals might need
the assistance beyond the letter at their local embassies. And over and
over again, we know these countries that yearly present visa troubles for
applicants.

And since it can be relatively easier for individuals with relatively high
travel history to get visas, the actual people who might need this
dedicated assistance can drop further.

2017-06-22 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Well, the goal won't be to *influence* or whatnot. That isn't gonna work.
The goal is to provide extra details and answer questions that might come
up.

Some systems aren't entirely closed. From the outside, it looks closed, but
a closer look reveals there's the option for recognized organizations
(keyword is "recognized") to stretch a hand.

Not all embassies in varied countries run the same. But the question is,
has there been any attempt (stunt) of that sort pulled off ever?

And after spending a load ton of effort in organizing, if the
invitees don't get to come, does that not bring us to where we began?

It ain't an easy or going to be an easy task. However, trying to dodge that
also opens the opportunity for rejections easily.

Of course, it feels like a lottery. However, if there's anything one could
do to tip the chances of 'winning' the lottery a bit to the bright side,
won't that be a worthwhile effort, no matter how hard?

Re: [Wikimania-l] Visa rejections

2017-06-22 Thread Nkansah Rexford
It is easy to conclude the location hinders visa application acceptance. As
much as it appears to be so, I strongly believe if there's good enough Visa
support and assistance from the Wikimania Team/WMF, rejected cases could be
low.

Obviously, an applicant should have documents intact and good, and submit
all the necessary details the embassy wants, including the invitation
letter. However, in some countries, that ain't enough.

In 2012, the invitation letter I submitted to the consular at the US
embassy here in Ghana, she didn't read, and I could see from her face how
nonsense it looked to her. Heck, anybody anywhere could conjure such a
sheet of paper with black ink on, any time any day. Plus, the consular had
NO idea what Wikimedia was. There was no way I could explain what Wikimedia
is in the few seconds I had in front of the teller-like counter.

Wiki? WikiLeaks? Duh!

As much a mere letter of invitation is formal to some extent, to what
extent is the WMF also willing to support visa applications outside just
the letter?

Not saying WMF should do exactly same, but I know other organizations that
pick up the phone, and call the local embassy of the invitee way ahead of
time to initialize conversations and to explain to *what extent* whoever
they've invited fits in the about-to-happen event.

The embassy in many cases, asks questions they won't otherwise ask the
applicant, but would, to the inviting organization.

This visa issue, until the WMF *truly assist*, some countries will still
struggle getting accepted visa.

It is not easy, and it ain't something just a letter wipes away.

rex

PS: I know cases where rejected visa are reconsidered and approved just
because the inviting organization literally stepped in, and got serious
with the embassy.

Re: [Commons-l] Minimum resolution image for Commons

2017-05-21 Thread Nkansah Rexford
You might wanna consider the recommended guidelines for here too:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Image_guidelines#Quality_and_featured_photographic_images

Although the guidelines apply to quality and featured images, I think the
underlying reasons check.

At least, a 2MP resolution can be considered the minimum. I don't know if
any image below that threshold will look good enough these days on screens.

2017-05-04 Thread Nkansah Rexford
I believe the FEMALES in the group are a little reluctant to lead so giving
them more opportunities like this would go a long way in improving Female
participation which we lack already.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I hope more opportunities = more
participation.

Why FEMALE? Or it is yet another way of fixing gender inequality?

I don't really care what gender gets the partnership going, however, your

Hi all,

A quick reminder that if you're planning to apply for Project Grants, the
deadline is in a week. Make sure you don't miss this deadline if you expect
to need more than $2000 for organizing Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in your
country.

As we think of the interchange, I hope we keep Ghana's First Lady in mind
too.

There's no picture of Rebecca attached to her article at the moment.

[African Wikimedians] Big Thanks to Wikimedia Netherlands for Historic Images

2017-01-16 Thread Nkansah Rexford
So I went to the Ghana Wikiproject today and noticed a message.1

tl;dr: The Wikimedia Netherlands has donated some 2,000 historic images,
going back as far as almost a century related to Africa, South America and
Southeast Asia.2

Specifically to Ghana, I doubt those images (very old) could be found
anywhere, such as this 1953 image of Fort Amsterdam.

3

I am impressed and really thankful for such a generous donation to
Wikimedia Commons relating to Ghana's history.

Now I guess it's about time we put those images to use!

I hope more are shared as and when they become available. Kudos, WMNL.

Checkout the category to find images about your country too. I've seen
Guinea Bissau in there somewhere.

[Wikimedia-GH] Fwd: [Wikimania-l] News regarding Wikimania 2018

All,

On behalf of the Wikimania Steering Committee and the Wikimedia Foundation,
I am pleased to announce that we have decided to explore having Wikimania
2018 located in Cape Town, South Africa. It would be hosted by a team
 led Douglas Scott with
support of the Wikimedia ZA chapter and the WMF. The proposal will be
further vetted by the WMF staff in the coming months, after which time we
hope to confirm the award.

This past Fall there were a total of four teams
 that expressed interest in
hosting in 2018. We would also like to thank the people from South
Africa, Armenia, Thailand, and Perth for all their effort in putting
together materials for our consideration and their time spent discussing
the possibilities. As a volunteer-led movement, it is very encouraging
to have so many who want to support Wikimania.

Please join us in congratulating the South African team. If any of you
would like to get involved or have questions/suggestions, please
contact Douglas
Scott douglas.i.sc...@gmail.com

Sincerely,

Ellie Young

[Wikimedia-GH] [Update] Intro to Wikimedia @ Koforidua Technical Next Week

2016-12-08 Thread Nkansah Rexford
TL;DR
The event will happen, just not this year, but somewhere early February as
school resumes. According to Madam Mary, the university's Dean plans to
rope entire university in on the day of the meetup. We'll see about that.

So, we have some 2 months to prepare.

Will keep all updated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1584509] Re: hybrid CDs/DVDs not mounted in xenial

2016-12-05 Thread Nkansah Rexford
I have 2.27.1-6ubuntu3.1 and it is still not fixed.

LTS without working CD-ROM pretty feels ridiculous, to say the least.

Title:
hybrid CDs/DVDs not mounted in xenial

Status in util-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in util-linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  * Impact
some CDs are not listed in the desktop UIs

  * Test case
under unity7 insert a video DVD in your drive, you should get prompted about
it and have the device listed in the launcher/nautilus

  * Regression potential
check that devices keep being correctly listed/mounted

This bug affects both the X64 and X32 bit versions of the latest
ubuntu 16.04 it does not occur with ubuntu 15.10 or earlier. The
problem is when a known good CD-R is placed in the drive, it is not
mounted automatically. However, if it is a bootable CD-R and you
select the boot option of the BIOS it will function normally.

Also, When a blank CD-R is inserted into the drive, it is mounted
automatically, but disk creation software reports an erroneous amount
of free space available. Such as 247 MB or 512 MB when the disk is a
700 MB disk. However, if you proceed to record to the disk, even with
an ISO image greater than the supposed available capacity, it records
  just fine.

Other disk types such as DVD, audio, small cd-r work fine. This only
seems to affect the larger, full size cd-r's

Re: [List admins] Cant login to list

2016-12-02 Thread Nkansah Rexford
@Isarra

I hardly see any "rude responses" relating to pointing a subscriber to go
file the issue at the right place.

I'm still struggling how best again Rob's words could have been and not be
rude. At least, he used "Please" in both his emails. I wouldn't have added
the "Please", trust me! If he gave you that, take it!

Go file the issue at Phabricator, and that's rude? No one responds, and the
next guy comes complaining why this list isn't helpful. When it gets
helpful, another guy comes saying how "rude" helpful it is.

[Wikimedia-GH] Barcamp Ghana Images Categorization

2016-11-30 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Can we all agree on a single Category on Wikimedia Commons in which all
Barcamp Ghana pictures will be stored?

So, here's what I propose. Any Barcamp Ghana related image(s) uploaded to
Wikimedia Commons, should have at least these 2 Categories attached. It
could be more, but at least these 2 should be fine:

   - Barcamp Ghana
   - Barcamp [Name of Town or City] e.g Barcamp Accra or Barcamp Koforidua

Although one or two Wikimedia-sessions related images are taken at
Barcamps, a quick search doesn't reveal much on Wikimedia Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=Barcamp+Ghana=Special:Search=Go

I personally haven't been doing well on that, and hope to improve, sharing
one or two images I have today.

If owners of the images in this link too can share the Wiki-related parts
to Commons, it'll be great:

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] Represent us at WMCON 2017 in Berlin

2016-11-28 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Thanks, Asaf,

That means the User Group has been doing it wrong for a couple of years,
and individuals who've represented this community at the WMCon weren't
picked by the community if I remember clear.

On the other hand, the WMCon team hasn't ensured those picked by the
community were represented.

I guess I have to blame myself. Yesterday was my first time going to the
WMCon website to read what's there, like *actually* read it.

@Felix, tried doing some searches, you represented Ghana twice at WMCon in
the past, right?
Did you know of this arrangement of selection for attendees to the WMCon
previously?

Oh well, let's discuss who goes this year then.

@Sandister, you'll start a new thread for that? When should the discussion
begin? And the report, let's get in touch to see how to proceed. Two days
left for us.

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] Represent us at WMCON 2017 in Berlin

2016-11-26 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Next week we can start talks on who gets to go as our delegate.

There should be a discussion of who should go? What if who we pick to go
isn't accepted to attend? Isn't the thing open to apply then whoever is
picked go?

If that's how it is supposed to be done, then the previous years, whoever
represented Ghana, did he/she follow that process?

I don't remember that being the case. Unless I'm mistaken. Please enlighten
me.

[Wikimedia-GH] Sandi, is that you?

2016-11-21 Thread Nkansah Rexford
I see the https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ghana_User_Group page
has been revamped a bit. Looks nicer.

Is this the work of you, Sandister?

Happy you graduated in the Wiki Skills, and now a pro.

Good job.

That's a good question,

I guess they plan to have us use an auditorium or so.

Indeed, a classroom would be fine though. Let's wait to hear from Mary by
end of this week. If finding a spot for the venue theyre looking at will be
hard, we can dropdown to something simpler and easier to book.

Hello all,

A bit late but the event ain't coming on today too.

The reason? The venue the school plans to allocate for us is busy, so I'm
told we'll get feedback before end of this week when and where it'll happen
next week.

It'll come on, just like the Legon event, will just take a bit of time for
things to fall in line.

Will keep all updated.

Re: [Wikimania-l] Wiki (not) Mania?

2016-11-04 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Just did a quick google search for the word 'Mania'. The definition I got
is interesting.

I think with such a definition, it is REALLY worth it having a conversation
relating to the name.

Wiki-mental-illness? Like seriously? All these years? For someone like
myself who the word 'mania' never crossed the mind to find the meaning, the
term 'Wikimania' didn't mean anything except a conference for Wikimedians
around the world in general.

But looking up the word paints a whole new picture. Like seriously?

Mania: "mental illness marked by periods of great excitement, euphoria,
delusions, and overactivity."

Woow.

[Wikimedia-GH] Cancelled - Koforidua Training Update

2016-11-01 Thread Nkansah Rexford
So, long and short of the update, I heard from Madam Mary a few minutes
ago. Arrangements aren't ready at the end of Koforidua Technical University
yet in order for the training to happen tomorrow as planned.

Thus, the training session has been postponed to next week Wednesday the
9th of November.

Will keep you guys updated.

[Wikimedia-GH] Intro to Wikimedia @ Koforidua Technical Next Week

2016-10-19 Thread Nkansah Rexford
Good day,

At Barcamp Koforidua over the weekend last week, I met Mary, a lecturer at
Koforidua Technical University. Mary got interested with the Wikimedia
word, and has discussed with her team. WGUG has been invited to run a
session at KTU.

Will be sending a proposal letter before end of today. In the letter, we're
asked to indicate one of the days below, and explain what we plan to do
that day.

Probable days given us are next week, 26th (Wednesday) and 27th (Thursday)
of October. We been given a max of 3 hours, but I strongly suggest we stick
to a max of 1 hour 30 minutes

So, anyone wanna start the proposal letter and share with us? Do we have a
letterhead, as in, WGUG?

What should be the focus of the sessions? Wikipedia? Wikidata? Wikimedia
Commons? or any other sister project site? Wikipedia Education Program?

Reporting is one Sandister's good at, and I personally tries to learn from.

On that note, will put in a short report on the session that happened at
Barcamp Koforidua soon.

Great example!

Let's share what we work on with the community more.

so it can be included in reports.

This is not compulsory, however if your partners in the events think
they are dealing with an entire group which is the Wikimedia Ghana UG, then
I think it's fair you tell the group you are representing us somewhere.

Because yesterday, we were receiving tweets saying we were in Ashesi,
when I have not seen any message in the mailing list saying we were on
 outreach in Ashesi.

Felix and Berchie you have been very active in projects. I have read
that you have more schools on your list and have listed as program leaders
for the Wikipedia Education Program. So if your partners are going to
consider this as a 'Wikimedia Ghana thing' please shoot the mailing list an

Re: [Wikimedia-GH] [Update] Barcamp Koforidua 2016

2016-10-16 Thread Nkansah Rexford
In fact, I went into the breakout session with the intention not to take
anyone's contact whatsoever. I'm tired taking them.

I just told all in attendance to search for "Wikimedia Ghana User Group"
online. If their search engine sends them to #KalyppoChallenge, well...

But I believe a word to a wise 'is in the north' so those who really wanna
get going will get in touch if they really want to.
