Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
I know that Apple limits the rate at which you can stream, but I would vote for a pseudo-stream option where I either load up my iPhone ahead of time (a la iTunes) or let it buffer for a while to accomplish the same result. Then be able to output at something like VBR 0. I got a Squeezebox because I wanted to improve the fidelity for home listening, but for car or at work, I either need to sacrifice audio quality or integrated playlist and statistics management. I don't need to listen to lossless in the car (well, unless I'm parked), but would like better than 128k. It works with iPeng and you can also set a higher limit for the bitrate (there's a Bitrate limiting menu in the player settings for iPeng playback. It's bending Apple's rules a bit (by default it's set to the 128kbps limit for 3G) but so far they didn't complain. Caching would be nice and it's on my to-do-list forever but it means I also have to implement a whole new player control since the Squeezebox Server system always requires a working live connection. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've been pretty happy with Slimdevices for many years. My Duet hardware works flawlessly as do the booms and various revisions of classics around the house. Only recently has my enjoyment been reduced by the fact that Squeeze does not fully support Slacker Premium service. Slacker is my preferred service and I want the functionality in Premium. The content is what is important, and the hardware is just a means to it. If Sonos or other hardware fully support the content I want, then that's where I have to go. Right now I feel like I support two brilliant businesses (Slacker/Squeezebox) that have been beat out by more flexible and creative rivals (Pandora/Sonos). Still rooting for the good guys, but my experience is worse and my patience is waning. diego32's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=45394 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the tips about searching. I don't have an IOS device so I don't get to try iPeng, and I don't have a windows machine, so I don't get to try museo. As for why LMS search is inadequate for my needs, I see that I have posted previously about this: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?85325-Search-algorithm Basically, one and the same piece might be labelled Brahms: Quintet for Piano and Strings on one album, Brahms: Klaverquintett on another, Brahms: Piano quintet on another, etc. The performances might be found on albums with titles like Brahms and Schumann: Piano Quintets, Brahms chamber works, etc. LMS search is not capable of finding these (say at the cost of also finding just a few other things). The search Brahms quint will find all of them (as well as Brahms quintets for other instrument combinations) on iTunes. That is why I often resort to searches on iTunes before playing something via LMS. fredgoodman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Maybe I'm wrong.About 90% of speakers made and sold through your usual consumer electronics retailers are passive. The only active speakers most people have easy access to are the cheap ones that are sold for computers. Three of the four Sonos systems I have seen were professionally installed multi-room setups with speakers mounted high up on walls or built in to the ceiling. These need amplification and it made the installation a lot simpler to use amplified Sonos boxes. I'm amazed that Sonos has jumped ahead of Logitech with this. Logitech had a huge head start and certainly the brand power to see it through. It upsets me when I go to my local department store (Target) and see a large prominent Sonos display. Sonos is also so expensive!!Totally agree! Mind you most of the people I know who have bought Sonos don't really have to worry about money! I remember talking to one and said that I had gone for Squeezebox partly because Sonos was so expensive. She looked at me as though I was mad no it isn't, its really cheap! was her reply. After further interrogation it turned out that she had also asked her installer to quote for a Linn based wired multi-room system that was going to cost about £20,000! So £2,000 for a couple of Sonos boxes and some wall mounted speakers sounded cheap to her. The Sonos installation was after all only for their weekend cottage in Suffolk so she was not looking for sonic perfection... When I told her that my Squeezeboxes plugged into my existing hi-fi setup and cost a total of less than £400 she looked at me as if I had just suggested she should ditch Harvey Nichols and start buying her clothes at Primark!! SoundCloud plays through HTML 5 on the web site. It's one of these examples that work from iPeng but it's difficult. Soundcloud links expire after a few seconds so you can't re-play them and if you pause them, they are gone. You'd need native support for SoundCloud's API to do any better than that, e.g. through a plugin but the one plugin for SoundCloud that is available doesn't do it. There's quite a layer of authentication being done when resolving the link which is why you can't just paste them into LMS, LMS - unlike your browser - is not authorized to play these links. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
Usually most consumer users rather than enthusiasts want to keep it simple. Most of the suggestions here are from rather hard-core users, as you would expect on a dedicated forum. Unfortunately Sonos has beaten Squeezebox in this particular format battle. Now when I describe my Squeezebox system to friends they say oh, you mean it works like a Sonos. The reason Sonos won is they offer a fully integrated hardware and software system that offers a whole working setup from Speakers, amps, clients and access points making sure they match visually as well as technically - and their bespoke wireless net where every client is also an access point was a stroke of genius that solved the big bug that has forever plagued the Squeezebox. They keep up with Apple and Microsoft by not relying on either company for any part of their systems - except to make sure their server software works on both setups. Even then, I know four people with Sonos systems and none of them run a server, listening entirely through on-line systems like Napster/Rhapsody and Spotify. That means their Sonos systems work completely independently from any other piece of computer hardware in their houses, connecting only at their router. Hi-fi is a dying hobby. 90%+ of people buying consumer electronics want a whole system - in most cases this means just a single music box! They certainly don't want to buy their amplifier from one company, speakers from another, CD player from a third and digital streamer from a fourth. So, what would most users want from Logitech? It is probably too late to create their own wireless net, which would probably infringe Sonos patents anyway. However they could sell a 1 - Squeezebox branded wireless access point / bridge / wireless extender In addition to the Touch and Radio which are fine, 2 - visually matched high quality powered speakers to go with the Touch (not just some crappy PC speakers) 3 - a player with an integrated amplifier (why oh why oh why have they never done this obvious thing!!!) 4 - a player with an integrated amplifier and speakers (Boom II, but prettier) and because the Squeezebox system is aimed more at those with their own digital music libraries 5 - a dedicated (Linux) server to run the software I know that 3rd parties have provided all of these at one time or another, but my point is that they have to be visually integrated and produced and supported by Logitech. Ideally all the components, including the Touch, Radio and new hardware would have a design overhaul to make them prettier. Provide hardware in white as well as black to better match existing interior decor. That way, somebody could go into an electronics store and buy a complete working Squeezebox system from network and client through to speakers. Of course this will never happen now. Logitech still had the time to do this when they bought Squeezebox but they failed to put in the necessary investment and commitment and now this technically superior platform has lost out to the inferior one. I read 3 and thought uh, that's the Boom, but then I realized you meant something you can connect your own speakers too. In the world of powered speakers, would that really be necessary. Somebody that is inclined to buy their own passive speakers would also be inclined to buy their own amplification. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm amazed that Sonos has jumped ahead of Logitech with this. Logitech had a huge head start and certainly the brand power to see it through. It upsets me when I go to my local department store (Target) and see a large prominent Sonos display. Sonos is also so expensive!! I miss the active development of the software. I also think it's time for Boom II. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Is it just the lack of hardware with Logitech logo on the front as TheLastMan suggested or is there something we could do in software that would make everyone select a Squeezebox instead of Sonos ? Also, assuming we prefer the open Squeezebox products in front of the closed Sonos products, is there something we as a community could do to improve the situation ? All the premature predictions of Squeezebox end of life mentioned in a lot of threads in the forum is definitely a step in the wrong direction, but maybe there is something else we can do ? A big part of it is the lack or hardware. You have the radio and the touch - that's it!! And stores like Target aren't shoving them in peoples faces next to the Bose products. Crutchfield doesn't even feature the squeezebox in their catalog anymore - just Sonos. The best, most robust, easiest to use software isn't going to fix these issues. I'm a hardcore user and an avid music enthusiest. What matters to me isn't going to matter to 90% of the users, so satisfying my needs isn't going to bring droves of new squeezebox users into the fold. Feature-wise, I'm happy with what we have today. I love that I can easily turn my iOS and Andriod devices into portable squeezeboxes. Software stability is another story. My server stops for no apparent reason. If it doesn't stop by itself, I have to restart it periodically because of a memory leak. The only reason I'm on this version of software is Rhapsody support. The last version of 7.3 was solid as a rock, but doesn't support changes Rhapsody made in their protocol. The LMS versions scare me with all of the problems people reported along the way. Problems were always fixed super fast...not so any more. Sorry to sound like a sourpus and a negative-nancy, but I think the issues surrounding the squeezebox are beyond help from the community. Logitech needs to relaunch the Squeezebox line with some new exciting hardware and marketing support. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Here is what's missing for me: Add to Amazon Wishlist from music services. Current Amazon app only works with CD and only adds to cart. Slacker App that supports all Premium features of the Slacker service--waiting over a year now for that. More apps for more music services - Amazon cloud player, Rdio, iHeartRadio, whatever comes next. Seems Logitech develops it and that is the end--it's frozen. And they are really lagging behind in supporting new services and new features that get added to existing services. Ability to play some files through Squeezebox without having them added to the database. Some way to adjust replay gain adjustment for local files so there is not a big discrepancy in volume when switching from local music to internet radio or music services. In my system, local files always play considerably lower than other sources. What's missing for me is a flexible and intuitive interface for setting up and running automated playback schemes. My daily routine is fairly consistent and I'd like to create a number of unique music play back scenarios for morning and evening listening, for both weekdays and weekends. I would like to define times periods, players to be included (or removed) from a synchronized group (even during a period), what is played for each player or group, and flexible volume controls. Some of this can be achieved using the alarm function but it's far too limited. When thinking about missing features, new hardware devices came to my mind first. But besides the missing devices, a decent integrated library management is missing, too. Music playing functionality should not be separated from music management functionality. Playing music with LMS, ripping and managing the library with additional aplications (dbpoweramp, itunes, mediamonky, ...) is fun for the experienced user, but it's a pain for the normal user. I expect LMS to have an integrated library management functionaly to rip/add/buy music, manage metadata (using external metadata sources) and seamlessly include music from cloud/streaming services as if they were stored locally. A simple idea ! To add music to an ongoing playlist we have two ways + that append our selection last in the playlist and | play next that chucks our selection rigth into the playlist after the current song . I need a third mode play next -album- . I want it to work like this I sometimes lines up 2-4 albums in a row to listen to , but then I change my mind and want to insert another album after what I'm listen to now ,but now I have to wait to the last song of that album and use play next . I usually do these kind of playlist line up a bunch of albums I intend to listen to, I may not finish it in one go. I continue the next day or similar . it can be some great albums by an artist a genre or just my 2 to 10 latest albums. There's none to be seen in the high street any more here in the UK, unlike Sonos, AirPlay, Philips Stremium, Naim etc. These are everywhere from department stores to hifi shops. Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
I haven't read through this entire thread, but here are things that are missing from my Squeezebox experience: 1. Ability to embed lyrics into a song file. Using the Song Lyrics plugin, I can see the lyrics on my computer browser or through iPeng. I'd like to be able to save those into the file somehow. When I ran my lyrics finder batch program, it found lyrics for ~50% of the songs in my library. It missed some that it should have found. When I play a song that doesn't have lyrics embedded in it and view Song Info, I'll see lyrics that are delivered from www.musixmatch.com. 2. This one is related to the one above, but the ability to add or edit other tag info for a track. For instance, as I listen to a song, I'd like to be able to add a genre or correct a typo in a tag. Right now, I have to fire up a tag editor, load the file, make the correction. It's a hassle, so it usually doesn't get done. Or I save a note and do several at once. If I could edit the tags in a web browser though, that would be awesome. I am not talking about batch editing of multiple tracks, but rather editing tags for the track that is currently playing (or that is being viewed). prabbit's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11142 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Before the Song Lyrics plugin was invented I used to do this with software called Music Bee. It's simply a matter of adding the lyrics as metadata, just like any other tag. The SB server software recognized the tag and displayed the lyrics on interfaces such as the web ui and the SB Controller. Most of my library has the lyrics in tags, but to be honest, now when I look at the lyrics I don't know if they're coming from the tags or if they are being fetched by the Song Lyrics plugin (except for newer additions to my library, which Song Lyrics is definitely fetching). aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

1: TuneIn Radio Pro, or similar. I have this on my i-pad and phone, you can pause the live radio stream and later on continue listening. You can also record streams, manually or with a programmable timer, handy if your favourite radio station lacks a listen again feature. The pause function actually is enough for me to bring the tablet to the breakfast table instead of using the Radio already there. 2: A real FM radio receiver. With RDS. Yes, really, it would add to my Squeezebox experience. I know some people here dont understand why but this is something I miss, also on my i-devices. This has been brought up hundreds of times by other users, as well as being a sticking point during beta testing, so it's not my personal wish while I ignore everyone else. And not a matter of incorrect or correct, just about configurability. The biggest issue is visibility of the interface from a distance and why more flexible text sizing is needed. If someone sits six feet from the Touch while using the remote and has good eyse, then maybe a smaller text and four lines would work better for them. On the other hand, someone twelve feet away with poor eyesight might prefer a larger font. Same thing with Now Playing. My 2c re JJ's very good suggestions, if I may elaborate further . Player settings done by the web-UI is usually retained by the server.prefs file and in a multiplayer setup having the server as a hub for settings makes sense. logitech should then make it easier to save and restore * all * settings including mysb.com. Such as the result of reinstalling the server from scratch should have you restoring *one* single settings backup and all including services last.fm et all should be as before, running around to set everything on each player is nonsense IMO ? Problem re volume is that the sync is absolute, every player gets synced to same number for example 72 this is nonsense in almost all situations you can think off . What needed is how iPeng does it, a master volume slider that adjusts the volume relatively , it is very likely that volume 43 is ok in my bedroom boom and 65 is what I have on my kitchen Touch , so if I want slightly louder relative volume changes is the way to go. Otherwise there will always be a to quit location and one to loud , thus the current approach can only be used if your different stereos and booms and radios just so happens to produce a similar acoustic output at the same volume setting, this is very unlikely. If the issues are limited to platforms that aren't officially supported, it feels like a better solution would be to add support for those platforms, either through third party helper apps or not, doesn't really matter as long as they work. I'm personally not convinced it will work better just because Logitech would bundle it and maintain it themselves. Do you have issues personally or is this something you read on the forums and think other people would like to improve ? Not so much/Yes But if it came bundled you don't have to gradually find out whats missing :) At the moment I'm only lacking WMA and WMAL transcoding on my Linux box I think ? (it might be more ,but I have not stumbled there yet ) And some plugins want's their own transcoders as the provided ones are not enough ? I know that lame is the best regarding mp3 but due to licensing it can never be included, forcing everyone to separately install lame on their system , why not include another mp3 encoder (licensed) in the bundle. The oddballs requring high end mp3 can fix that themselves . I really don't care for ultimate mp3 fidelity so I would have been happy saving those 10 minutes finding out where to get lame for my platform . I'm not against options and configure stuff to my own liking ,but stuff that could be made simpler should be . And of-course on CPU underpowered platforms it's a no go . Getting at it from another angle would be improving the native decoders on Touch it has problems with 24/96 aiff and some 24/96 alac I don't know about 24/96 WMAL ? . There are odd exceptions in the native decoders sometimes ? it should in total work so well that the file types settings page could go away or be a hidden option (like a plug in you could activate ) . To be fair it is much better now and someone installing on a bog standard pc never have to fudge with this unless having some special needs like ingus . LMS should configure agaisnt the installed platform by itself . Volume syncing a Boom or Radio with players attached to stereos having a separate volume control just doesn't work. - A more powerful Random Mix. - An option to exclude unchecked genres when a track has multiple genres. Or make it the standard behavior. - The ability to set a date (year) range. - Save and play random mix settings by name. - Bug fixes galore. - Go back and fix the many small problems introduced with onebrowser. - Rethink and fix VA handling. It could be very simple where a Squeezebox Controller could have a button-activated microphone and you speak simple commands into it: Play Playlist Mom Favorites Sync all players Play Favorite National Public Radio Play Podcast Jim Rome Play Artist Metallica Play Genre Heavy Metal Random Stop All Players Play Playlist Lullabies on Player Nursery etc. etc. spedinfargo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15712 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
Hi erland I listen daily to BBC Radio shows using BBC listen again. A couple of years ago, if I wanted to listen to the Alex Lester show each day (several hours after broadcast), I would set up five favourites: one for the 'Alex Lester Monday show', one for the 'Alex Lester Tuesday show', and so on. So presumably the URLs were constant. Unfortunately, the BBC now puts the shows out as Alex Lester show Monday 30 April, Alex Lester show Tuesday 1 May, and so on. So the URL is different every week. This also applies for other non BBC radio stations. My wish is to be able to save favourite searches. Not the result of the search, but the word(s) that I want to search for. So to search for Alex Lester shows, in stead of having to type in 'alex lester' every time, I would go to my favourite search list, scroll to Alex Lester, and hit search. You might think that typing in 'alex lester' is not a big deal, and you would be right to an extent, but... 1. The question was what is missing from your squeezebox experience?, and 2. I have an SB Duet and typing is done by a scroll wheel (slightly hit and miss), an SB3 and typing is done through the number keypad (also slightly hit and miss), and an SB Boom (typing is the most cumbersome through the little remote). The BBCiPlayer plugin is a 3rd party plugin and so is not part of LMS per se and shoul;d ne be trreated as part fo LMS asd it has to deal with BBC foibles. The BBC WMA URLs are fixed and reused on a 7 day cycle (see how to make a link here http://beebotron.org/beebobodgewma.php ) but AAC URLs are unique per program and so go out of date. The plugin has a little known and a bit hard to use filter ability which can be used to produce a matching list of programs. There are two things I would really like to see in the near future. I've used MusicIP and don't care for it, but I've grown to love MoodAgent from the Spotify app. I really like the mixes it comes up with and it is so easy to use. I would love to see a MoodAgent plug-in for LMS or at least one of the LMS Spotify plug-ins upgraded to include the existing Spotify MoodAgent app. Secondly, I would like to see the Android controller (Logitech's or Squeeze Commander or a new one) upgraded to take advantage of the tablet form factor with very large album art both in the browsing and in the now playing screens. Regarding album art, are we just talking about automatically retrieving album art for albums which doesn't have album art previously or were you thinking about a manual operation where you retrieve album art for a selected album/track ? An example from yesterday. I ripped the More Moondog CD published by WEA France in 1991. I had one of the CD databases return 1991 as the release date. For me this is wrong. Release info is Prestige 1956, remastered 1991. Further, this CD is a (hidden) combo: LP The Story of Moondog, Prestige 1957 has sneaked in as bonus tracks on this CD. So with the help of discogs I have split the CD in 2, set the appropriate dates, and grabbed the original LP artwork (google image helps here, too) My tags are not in a mess. The music industry was: CDs were expected to hold 60 minutes of music, so we end up with many nondescript compilations, combos, or CDs where there are more bonus tracks than there were tracks on the original recording. With the SB we are in the digital realm so I can fix this kind of situation, and finally understand what I am listening to. Another recent example. Miles Davis' soundtrack Ascenseur pour l'échafaud on CD includes a ton of studio alternate takes, following each master take. Listening to this CD was a bizarre experience Finally I compared the original LP tracklist and the CD reissue's, split the files in 2, as original LP + bonus studio takes. And for the first time I could enjoy the LP thoroughly. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The scenario I am envisaging is the typical party: people come over, drink, get bored of your finely selected music and then say, let me DJ for a while. They basically have a stock iPhone. If I were in the Apple ecosystem, I'd just have an Apple router plugged into my stereo. (Which would be most important for you personally) My situation is that I have a couple of laptops, which are not always at home (and are not always on), but which have some music which is not on the main server (at least yet). But I sometimes want to be able to play the music off the said laptop. I don't want to run anything extra on the laptops (I guess it's ok if there is a DLNA media library being served by them). Currently (since it's a Windows network) all the music is accessible to every other machine as part of the Homegroup, so file sharing between the server and these machines is enabled. It would be nice to be able to somehow easily play that music, even if it did require a scan at some point before, but not every time the machine is connected (and it's ok if the library is then somewhat out of date). I think I would actually prefer to drill down to the music on the laptops separately, rather than have everything integrated together, or at least to ahve that option. More importantly, the music should not be listed in the SB menus if the laptops are not on the network. Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
The most annoying thing - and this not unique to Sqeezebox in any way - is that iTunes beats it hands-down in the creation and use of playlists. The Squeezebox implementation is based on the assumption, I assume, that Squeezebox users don't really need such a simple interface - they can cope with more technical methods. IMHO this is the one single thing that iTunes does really well, and should be emulated asap. Without this really quite simple approach, the system will forever be tagged with the only useable by techies nerds label and sales will be hugely restricted for ever. And on that note, the techies nerds (of which I am one - been in IT since c1975) should not come back and say this is daft - I know how to create and deploy playlists, but stand someone in front of your SB/Touch or whatever and tell them to create and deploy a playlist they simply cannot do it without detailed instructions and detailed explanations. Not good enough - I have only ever come across one relatively elderly person who could not immediately suss it out on iTunes/iPod etc etc but they all have one. My 85yr old Pa uses his squeezebox daily because I have set up his playlists for him. He should have been able to do it himself. My wife cannot do it my 15yr old daughter claims not to have the time to investigate. I ONLY use iTunes for setting up feeding the one iPod in the house that Rockbox doesn't support generally hate it since it comes with so much Apple FUD, arrogance stuff that I really don't want or need (like the iTunes store), but the playlist execution is the one critical thing that made it universally useable by the masses pre-the iTunes store. sherington's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2587 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

About the only thing that might be of interest to me is a Touch 2. Something with a bit bigger screen, maybe a bit more robust at being it's own server, and the ability to display on a TV or monitor. The way I think it could make great strides for the simplification of use, is a self contained system that one could just plug in a USB drive and be up and going. Granted it should be open enough that tweakers or people that want more options could expand upon. But it seems that some that I've talked to get intimidated and confused by the whole separate server idea and are just used to how easy it is to just play stuff from iTunes/pods. So that's my suggestion, a robust self contained system that could be pretty plug and play. rayman1701's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41326 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I completely agree, if they have limited resources they really need to put some focus on making it easy for third party developers to enhance the product and so they can do everything Logitech doesn't have resources to do themselves. The issue is more widespread than just the Jive interface, it's a general API issue where offering a third party API often isn't a priority. However, to give them some credit, they have done some things on the server side with the onebrowser API and new scanner API introduced in 7.6 which was a step in the right direction for third party add-ons. cparker wrote: In my opinion Logitech have lost direction and just to top it off, it looks like they are on yet another rebranding exercise to change the product name again... [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
To me it feels like my Squeezebox experience hasn't really evolved much during the last year. When thinking back, I remember things like: - SqueezePad announcement - iPeng for iPad announcement - Triode's Spotify plugin announcement All these are things that truly made big changes to how I use my Squeezebox system to discover and listen to music, but all are older than a year. If I think about Logitech provided features I need to go back to the Radio and Touch releases to find something that really made a big difference for myself. But what's the next big thing we would like to be added or changed in the future, either through Logitech or third party developers ? I don't want a list of ideas which you think someone else wants, I want a list of ideas which YOU want. I don't want a list of bugs to be fixed because that's obviously something that needs to be done, so it doesn't have to be discussed, I like ideas of things that would make big changes to your Squeezebox experience, it might be ideas of new software features or ideas of new hardware, it might related to music listening or the earlier steps of ripping and tagging music to get it into your library. The purpose of this thread is mainly to give existing and new third party developers ideas of things which people want, since Logitech developers are present on this forum there is also a chance that someone from Logitech will spot the thread and pickup some excellent ideas for new features. So do you have any ideas for things that would really make a big difference for your Squeezebox experience ? Could be either small things or big things, but let's focus on things that will have a significant impact on your Squeezebox experience. erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I understand your point of view, and under normal circumstances I would agree. At this stage though I feel that it is pointless to think about extra functionality while Logitech hasn't been able to deliver even one (reasonably) bug-free firmware version for my two Squeezebox radios. Introducing new features, while even the most basic functions aren't reliable, is asking for (even more) trouble. Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
My experience with squeezebox degraded when you Erland decided your plugins (and the ones of sugarcube) become commercial and payable. Thanks to that change, i then realised lms is in fact very stable with no 3P plugins, thank you and that i can recover a lot of free time by sticking to the official (stable) version with no tweaking/plugins. Lms Alone does what it's supposed to do and does it very well. As already explained, i'd love track rating, user profiles and an improvement/replacement of musicip to be integrated by Logitech in the core product. I really wonder what is the sense and motivation of your post and why this initiative comes from you and not from Logitech. reniera's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40705 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Couldn't be much clearer: -The purpose of this thread is mainly to give existing and new third party developers ideas of things which people want, since Logitech developers are present on this forum there is also a chance that someone from Logitech will spot the thread and pickup some excellent ideas for new features.- In other words, ideas for enhancements to SB software that 3rd party developers are capable of delivering, with or without input from Logitech, which has its own set of priorities. If Logitech happens to pick up on some of the ideas, consider it a bonus. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
Still my number 1: A working SoundCloud plugin. There is one, but since it doesn't process the link authorization (or re-authorization) correctly it doesn't work any better than iPeng does out of the box meaning you can play a track but not store it in a playlist or a favorite. Also, it's browsing is a bit broken. So it's quite useless for me, it's still easier to just use iPeng but I would like to not only preview a track (or play once) but also to keep it in my Squeezebox ecosystem afterwards pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
1st of all I will say I am happy w/ SBS 7.6 and I think Erland's dedication to enhancing our musical experience should be praised. For me: #1: System actions in the playlist. Like setting volume up/down before/after a song; playing a radio stream for X minutes then switch to another source; etc. #2: Proxying the local library via mySB.com. On the move, the only protocol I am sure to have access to is HTTP on port 80. All the rest is likely to be filtered. I don't want to open this kind of gate on my LAN. But SBS could connect to something like mysb.com and allow access to local files #3: Power management integration at OS level. Make PM-aware the native win/mac os SBS dashboards so that the software can fight against a sleep request when playing, and disconnect/reconnect players at shutdown-sleep/boot-wake time. Try to cook something on linux, too. I believe a dummy usb driver would receive/handle the PM events on any reasonable platform. (I know srvPowerControl exists; it does more than fitting the bill a dedicated server. But it doesn't have OS-level integration so it does not work perfect on multi-purpose machines like a desktop.) #4: An undead MIP-like system. I use MIP and it kind of works. But it has its quirks and won't run on anything other than i386 (AFAIK) #5: Quality (which means authorized I suppose) art and metadata. I like discogs a lot, but really I am spending too much time on that site. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

missing a true audiophile option ie stripped down firmware etc so that all extraneous processes etc can be switched off and the Touch can reach it's true potential. Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?
Simple for me I guess... 1. When you add an album to library in Triodes spotify plugin it also goes in under artist or indeed goes in the main album list perhaps. This would help search or select by artist 2. When streaming spotify to lose the occasional hangs which almost always occur at the end of a track as the next one fails to play 3. Bombproof radio alarm feed of BBC R5 via mysb.com Still an awesome system though, even with it's foibles or 'features' as I like to call them! wonder boy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Enhance the bandcamp plugin so that you can shop music and download within the system . ( I could have my paypal account stored in the plugin settings ). Downloads go to a dedicated folder unzips and scan into the dB . Any other kind of integrated shop for lossles music ( I exemplified with bandcamp as I know of it's existence and it looks realistic to implement ) And yes an official music ip replacement please , so that we finally can have smart playlists . Tag editing via a plugin that has an UI that would work on iPeng or SqueezePad .
