[Frameworks] Films that feature confrontal intimidation
Hello all, I've wanted to ask this for a while. Are there any films that feature a scene where the character is confronted and intimidated by a manipulator who tries to make the situation awkward and confusing? I'm thinking to scenes like Alex's dinner sequence in Clockwork Orange or a scene where psychologist ridicule their subjects in William Klein's The Model Couple (1977). Greenaway's The Belly of an Architect is a great example of a struggling architect who becomes exploited and mocked by two elitist museum curators. Also, not sure if anyone is aware (I am unfortunately) but there is a growing trend among social media in which people who have a disagreement or argument with someone on the street will film them on their phone and upload it to platforms, which in turn will makes it very difficult for the person being put on the spot for ridicule. [Frameworks] Documentaries-diaries-essays or video/film installations that play with truth or cinema theory
Hello all. I've asked this quite a few times already, but I'm still on the lookout for films that question the concept of truth in documentaries or cinema. So far, I've been able to favor "Megacities" by Michael Glawogger, "David Hotlzman's Diary" by Jim McBride and "The stories we tell" by Sarah Polley. And yes, I've watched F for Fake more than enough ;) I've also been getting into dissecting film and theater down to, for lack of better terms, compound elements. I've been looking into the works of Bazin, Kracauer and Metz and how they have explored the concept of spectatorship and illusion within the realm of photography, film and sometimes theater. So anything that would focus on deconstructing truth or incorperate cinema theory. In addition to diaries and essays, I'd also be open to film/video installations/performances that share the same focus. Re: [Frameworks] essay film
Here are my thoughts, if I'm reading this correctly, is that the term "essay" is a loose excuse for someone cobbling together a bunch of moving images which might be a free flowing stream of consciousness that they are not quite aware of. I say this because I feel like I'm falling into this category. For the past few years I've been doing my own "documentary" or "essay" on a particular group of people and I feel like it's the only vague description I can feed anyone should they question my motives for filming. My intent is much more deeper and personal, but I'd rather reveal it when I feel the product is finished. But in terms of trying to make a "documentary" to cover a particular subjects with a specific rhetoric, setting itself out to covering something as 'real', 'truthful', 'problematic' and 'fixable' is indeed a theme that has been done plenty of times. Because of this, I think a lot of people in my age range in particular will fall back on the theme of "essay" or "diary-film" in hopes to avoid scoffs, eye rolls and ridicule. The group that I'm focusing on in particular has pushed out Documentary after Documentary after Documentary after Documentary. Honestly, there's that many. And everyone of them contain the same 101, introductary message "we're good people, please don't say mean things about us". Perhaps this is something I should keep in mind for myself. Although I am keeping a journal of my personal accounts with this group, good times, bad times, shits and giggles alike, I do feel like I've been shooting with a stream of consciousness. Everything is a bunch of scrabbled eggs. As a lost, semi-frustrated, caffeinated 31 year old, I ask photographers, journalists, and poets alike. What would you have me do? M On Wed, 5/22/19, Bernard Roddy wrote: Subject: [Frameworks] essay film To: frameworks@jonasmekasfilms.com Date: Wednesday, May 22, 2019, 9:35 PM Friends and colleagues, the essay is not really a suitable expression, form, or metaphor for what can be done in the medium of the moving image. The whole idea belongs to an undergraduate class that has to make the case to someone who is in college. The closer the works look and feel like essays, the worse they are. To a certain extent, we can hear the request: one wants to assign something to someone, one wants to make progress with a new generation of scholars and students, one wants to be legitimized, authorized, admitted into the syllabi and a table of contents. There will then be an easy passage from one kind of reading to another, between the page and screen. I couldn't really distinguish between accompanying someone and seeing such a work. I couldn't really say I cared until I found myself a witness. To be a witness to something, and to approach what it might have been like if the artist had witnessed it without the means of recording it, that is what makes or breaks an essay film. Ive started with eBay and I'd also like to reach out to anyone who has any film headers or leaders they'd plan on selling, giving away or throwing out. I'd be looking for a few countdown leaders (not much) but mainly headers from 16mm or 35mm prints and trailers or from TV reels. I'd be open to Double and Super 8 leaders and headers as well. Thanks in advance! -M___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Cine-Kodak Special II
This is actually good information for me to read along with. I have been shooting with a Cine Kodak for most of my projects for a good 2-3 years now. I have had no problems with the mechanisms or spring drive in the past, but recently I have felt something going on wth my spring drive. Almost as if it was wearing down too, but not completely. I'm not going anywhere near WD-40, but I would love to know about any other lubricants filmmakers use on their motion picture cameras. On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, 2:10:07 PM EST, Scott Dorsey wrote: The camera only runs a few seconds because everything in it is gunked up and it needs cleaning and lubrication, likely. Don't EVER run an old camera or projector without making sure the movement is properly lubricated, because you can wear out the cam very very quickly without proper lubrication. I don't know anyone working on the Cine-Kodaks offhand... I know that Jesse Chambless had a tech who did very good work on them but charged the usual Chambless prices. [Frameworks] Optical Printer lamps
Hello everyone. I was planning to make my own optical printer with my Cine Kodak Special and a toy 35mm projector, but I'm in need of a lamp. I know that JK kits have an adjustable brightness knob on their lamp and the bulb they use is MR16 watt. Anybody know where I could buy a lamp? What should I look for? Or could use a different light source? Thanks M ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] film/art for the autistic
Hello Dan, I'm 30 years on the spectrum myself, however I don't have teaching experience with autistic students. While your students may not find found footage filmmakers Bruce Conner or Bill Morrison as appealing as I do, one thing to keep in mind is that this generation is prone to video game and YouTube stimulation. I would suggest looking up YouTube Poops. The name may sound very infantile, but believe me when I say that a lot of editing and work go into remixing and warping movies and television shows in such a way that it creates a zany-surrealist humor effect for spectators. I have a guilty pleasure for these because of the quick, responsive in-jokes and edits that shoot by so fast, they catch me off guard. I would also look into VHS recycling channels such as Memory Hole or Everything is Terrible. In part two of "Adventures in First-Time Community College Teaching," I'm wondering if anyone has experience better reaching autistic students. There are two in my "Intro to Video" class, and we're starting out making a found footage movie from archive.org. The trouble is that finding visual connections and the Bruce Conner-style of filmmaking is a really tough hurdle for a person living with autism. (let alone most non-autistic folks!) Re: [Frameworks] Cyanotype on film
Calotype is a similar process along side cyanotypes. I did both of them at MA and would love to see some results if not try the process myself on celluloid. This is great info! Cyanotype is in the air - I teach Direct Animation at AgX Film Collective in Waltham about every 3 months, and I have been looking for more "advanced" methods to continue instruction with those who have already been introduced to the simpler techniques. I will also report on my results trying these methods. I have also heard of a type of "ray-o-graph" done with developer sprinkled on film in the dark and plants, etc, placed on the film to block out the light when the assembly is exposed to daylight. [Frameworks] Cine Kodak Super XX and panchromatic film
Hello everyone, I recently acquired a roll of 16mm Kodak film from the 1940s. Cine Kodak Super XX. I'm wondering if anyone on the list might know of a developer for this film? Is it still shootable? Since it's from the 1940s, I would suspect that it has a very low ISO and would need all the light it could get. But anyone out there who might have a better idea of ancient film help me out? ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

[Frameworks] Films that question truth
Hello again everyone. A while ago I asked about films that focused on the theme of lying. Recently I rewatched Man with a Move Camera (1929) and Megacities (1998) and both seemed to be examples of how the camera, or camera man, can alter the definition of truth in documentaries, that claim to present subject matter as truth. I know this is a vague set up and the topic of "truth" could be elaborated on for hours and hours. But. I'm just looking for films, docs and essays, that theorize the idea of truth and play with the audience's expectation. I've already been given F for Fake, David Holzman's Diary and Bleu Shut as examples from my last email. Is there any more out there? [Frameworks] Lying as a theme
Hello Does anyone know of any film (essay/diary/doc) where lying is a theme or the main focus? I wondered if there was anything that ran among these lines: 1. The audience is well aware that the narrator/filmmaker is lying to them 2. The audience does not know whether or not the narrator/filmmaker lying to them. It's left ambiguous. ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] 16mm sound recording
So, just so I'm caught up in this discussion, is it possible to stick a thin strip of magnetic sound tape to the celluloid or must it be done optically nowadays? Because it seems like there's talk of DTS with 35mm but I'm not aware of whether or not it can go on 16mm. Does that mean I'd have to consider a 35mm print of the 16mm? [Frameworks] Rephotographing 16mm

Re: [Frameworks] research
I have been using numerous wind up and hand cranked cameras made by the Kodak company from the 1920s. One of which is the Cine Kodak Special. It's essentially the precursor to the Bolex H16. I've used it for stop motion, hand cranks, fade ins/fade outs etc. Obviously you can still get film for it, but the earlier Cine Kodak models such as the A, E and K come with teeth that take double perforated film. Places sell it here and there, but it has become hard to come by nowadays. Because of this, I've been recycling double perf leader and footage to make myself hand made emulsion to be used with these cameras. I've even debated snatching one of the oval keystone wind ups and making the use of it's motor for a hand crank system. Robert Schaller has done both former and latter. I would look him up. http://www.handmadefilm.org -Morgan___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Re: [Frameworks] Hello - Curious about Double X 7222 reversal
Hey Chris, What do you mean by flashing? Hitting it with light before I develop it? And what's this about using "non diluted stock solution"? What about steps to just processing it as the negative roll? On Wednesday, January 27, 2016 7:47 AM, Chris G wrote: Hi, D-76 as a reversal developer for *222 will probably be too low in contrast. One method you may want to look into is using the stock solution (non-diluted) and processing at a higher temperature to yield greater contrast. Generally speaking higher concentrations of B&W developers = more contrast. On the chemistry side you may consider adding a bit more Hydroquinone and/or adding Potassium Bromide for increasing contrast/reducing fog. D-19 had more Hydroquinone in it and was a preferred high-contrast developer for home reversal processing. D-76 has no restrainer, so the Bromide should help in clearing things up a bit. Both are widely available through Photographer's Formulary and their distributors (Adorama, B&H, Freestyle, Amazon, etc..). You could also do some tests with flashing the film to compensate for the lower ISO, this can be done after film has been exposed as long as it's before it has been processed. Either way I believe the film is/will be underexposed. I think you'll either have to flash the film or push it. Flashing might keep it from getting as grainy as push processing, but I'm just speculating as I've never done it. Keep us posted on your results, I have a bunch of 7222 sitting around myself.
