Re: [Gimp-user] Book cover image density /resolution etc..

2020-02-04 Thread Tobias Jakobs via gimp-user-list
Hi Mark,

I think you are trying something impossible. 300 dpi = 300 dots per inch
(or better ppi = pixel per inch). If your book is 6x9 your image bust be
(6x300)x(9x300) = 1800x2700 pixel. Every thing else will not work! You
can't change the dpi without changing the number of pixel and the other way
around.

Tobias

Some scanners create 4-channel/12bit encodedimages. Then the 4th channel
is an IR channel that is useful for reducing dust.

Some history:
Gimp was first developed with Motif as UI toolkit. Motif was not open
source. That's why the GIMP developers created GTK (GIMP Tool Kit)
KDE was developed with Qt as UI toolkit, but Qt was not open source at that
time. That's why GNOME was started to get an complete OSS desktop. GNOME
chooses GTK as toolkit.
That's the main reason, why they share so much infrastructure.

GIMP has no foundation but people asked for donating to GIMP. To make that
easy the GNOME foundation cares about the GIMP money. As far as I know, the
GIMP team pays for this service and the infrastructur.

Re: [Gimp-user] Suggestion for opening raw images

2019-01-31 Thread Tobias Jakobs via gimp-user-list
Hi Rick,

as Guy already wrote, Gimp 2.8 only supports 8-bit. Gimp 2.10 supports
16-bit as internal format and in the raw loader. And perhaps you are
interested, Gimp 2.10 has support for the HGT file format, gathered by
the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). I blogged about it here:
https://dablogter.blogspot.com/2018/01/gimp-now-supports-hgt-file-format.html

And I have an blogpost how to import the NOAA GLOBE elevation files here:
https://dablogter.blogspot.com/2018/09/howto-open-elevation-data-from-noaa.html

What is missing is import of 32-bit float values in the "Load Image
From Raw Data"-plugin. I opened a feature for that:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/2804

Do you have a link to one of thePDS images?

Tobias

Not that I'm trying to shock you, but Inkscape will switch to the same

Re: [Gimp-user] Perspective tool - Hide original during transform

Hi Kalle,

there is a simple workaround. Just hide the layer and then transform it.
Even for a hidden layer you have the preview during transformation.

 Hi,

Long time Gimp user with unresolved problem here. One of the many task I
use Gimp for is collaging images of spaces and buildings for work. We
have Photoshop licences but I find some of the Gimp workflow better.

I frequently need to correct perspective (or scale for that matter) to
match a feature of the underlaying layers. The problem is that a not
transformed copy of the object stays in place behind the transform
obscuring the underlaying image and preventing accurate transform.

Is there a setting or alternative workflow to achieve what I'm looking
for? I created a series of images http://imgur.com/a/O9PvX showing the
problem. Unfortunately my simple example usecase can be helped by using
the grid but there are similar circumstances when the reference detail
is more or less completely hidden by the pre-transform copy of the
layer/selection. What you can see however is that the outline of the red
rectangle is lost in the background copy.

Anyone else who'd also be very happy for a way of hiding transform
 matrices?

 Regards
 /Kalle

Re: [Gimp-user] exporting text to pdf

2013-09-17 Thread Tobias Jakobs
Hello Oliver,

I haven't seen this bug on my System. But I have two workarounds for you:
1. Flatter all layers and then export to pdf.
2. Use Scribus for adding the text. Scribus has an very good PDF export.

Tobias

I'm trying to build the covers of a set of five books. Each cover contains
an image and some text, i.e. the author's name and the book title.

The image is correct when I export it to jpg or png, but the text is
wrongly rendered when I export to pdf. Not always, in fact: three covers
are OK. In the fourth one, the first two letters of the author's name are
set in a smaller body. In the fifth cover, two lines of the title are
placed to high, and covert the author's name, and the third line of the
 title is missing.

I cannot understand what occurs, and what characteristics of the cover
triggers what seems to be a bug. I'm using GIMP 2.8 on Ubuntu 12.10. Has
anybody already encountered such a problem?

When using a simple tool to perform simple tasks requires a long
philosophical explanation, we can say that there is a problem somewhere in

But Gimp is not a simple tool to perform simple tasks. Have a look at
the product vision:

So it's OK, that Gimp is not optimised for simple Tasks.

 Hi everybody,

this is my first post on this mailing list and it concerns the EPS
 support in Gimp 2.8.2

 Basic Information:

 - Gimp 2.8.2
 - Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit
 - GPL Ghostscript 9.0.6, 32 Bit
 - Variable GS_PROG is set to
   C:\Program Files (x86)\gs\gs9.06\bin\gswin32c.exe (which exists)

 Problem:

We recently switched from Gimp 2.6 to Gimp 2.8.2. Under 2.6 it was
possible to open EPS-Files in Gimp via Ghostscript, that's no longer
 possible under 2.8.2.

The screenshot attached shows the error appearing after choosing
resolution and dpi. English translation is:

C:\Users\admin\Desktop\E-TEK.eps could not be opened: Postscript-File
 C:\Users\admin\Desktop\E-TEK.eps could not be interpreted.

 Things tried:

 - Reinstalling Ghostscript
 - Reinstalling Gimp

Have there been changes to GIMP EPS-Support which I've missed?

 Regards and thanks in advance,
 Thomas

 Hi,

I'm building gimp on a FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT machine, with gtk3.
I have a failure in at-spi2-core when it does the g-ir-scanner bit. It
looks like it's possibly ignoring the include spec for Introspection, it's
 running:

 # /usr/local/bin/g-ir-scanner -v --namespace Atspi --nsversion=2.0 -I..
 -I.. --include=GLib-2.0 --include=GObject-2.0 (ETC)

 note the -I.. -I..

anyway it's failing, complaining about not finding libintl.h included in
 glib gi18n.h

I don't see where to add paths in autogen.sh, I edited the Makefile and
added -I/usr/local/include to INTROSPECTION_CFLAGS without luck.

I did find that manually changing to atspi path and running g-ir-scanner
with an extra -I/usr/local/include does the trick, then gmake can finish
 the build.

Does anyone have experience with this issue? Either I'm not correctly
building at-spi2-core or possibly a bug.

 I appreciate any suggestions/pointers.
