[lace] Sequins
Yes indeed Antje--sequins can cut thread! After making a gorgeous beaded necklace in a four day class (Dutch spiral with embellishments), the whole thing shredded at the closing banquet. I was particularly peeved because the materials were provided by the teacher. Mind you, this was nylon beading thread the technique required a certain amount of tension. Even so, consider how much service you expect from your completed piece. [lace] RE: International Lace Day
Hello everyone, Here in Finland Father's Day is the second Sunday of November. Celebrating mid summer is serious here, Friday is a public holiday, people tend to go their summer cottages and invite as many quests they can accommodate and party for two days. On Sunday afternoon/evening those who do not start their summer vacation will travel back home. So, here you can make lace in public place next Sunday (21st June) if you do not want anyone to see you. :) Best wishes, Outi from Vantaa, Finland In Australia Father's Day is observed on the first Sunday of September. Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
Interestingly, this is the only Arachne mail that has gone straight into my spam box ?! If you have a length of lace (a sample perhaps) gather it into a circle and sew a pretty bead into the centre, attach to a safety pin and VOILA you have a pretty broach. I saw some very attractive examples at the Lace Guild convention in April Jane in a slightly overcast Gloucestershire On Tuesday, 16 June 2015, 20:34, Jane janefr...@googlemail.com wrote: Hi All, I am not a computer expert, but I know that arachne is a majordomo mailing list working on a unix computer. All 'arachne' does is receive an email and bounce (reflect) it out to everyone on a specific list. Except that in addition, 'arachne' bundles emails into a package for a 'digest' version. I receive the digest version and although there is the occasional missing message, I've always assumed it is to do with the bundling process with a message being too large for one digest and somehow not getting in to the next. Those lost messages never belong to any one particular sender, but are quite random and rare. Certainly the sources of missing messages (Jeri, Devon, Jacquie all appear in the digests). In other words, the arachne majordomo and server are working fine and if anyone on the list is not in receipt of an email it is much more likely to be the receiving server / computer / email software. I can only suggest that those with problems pick over their email settings with a fine-tooth comb. May be Avital can offer further insight. Best wishes, Jane New Forest. PS. Nearly forgot! Lace content - I demonstrated lace for a day in Christchurch Priory last week for a 'Living Arts' exhibition. Pleased to have a steady trickle of interested people watching and asking questions. RE: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
Many thanks Amanda for the explanation of why certain messages go missing. We have a similar problem with another chat group I belong to, and I will pass this on to those who are affected. My biggest problem with Arachne (I use Explorer, but nothing goes into Spam and I don't miss any messages) is that many messages get truncated, it seems to be as soon as the sender uses some form of punctuation other than a full stop or comma. If the subject is interesting (like yours Alex recently on Bucks picots!), I immediately go over to my internet where I have a direct link to the Arachne archives as a bookmark on my top bar, and read the message there. As you say, these mailing lists are a tiny and shrinking part of the internet, and it's not likely that this could ever be fixed, so I've had to find my own way round the problem. [lace] Prickings
Hi Arachnids When making Flora Bucks I photocopy my pricking onto coloured paper and stick it to a thin coloured card, one that I know will stand up to my tension. I pre-prick the ground and fillings to make sure they are regular but prick-as-I-go around the motifs. That gives the the possibility of moving pinholes when I wish to. A cautionary note. The narrow edging in my christening bonnet booklet was made on an antique parchment and moving pins was not an option. The pricking has been very well made and the repeats accurate so I had to use the pins as determined in the parchment. It was a very interesting lesson on interpreting a pattern with unusual results. Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
I receive messages from Kent Family History Society and a while ago there were problems with members who had AOL email addresses; each time one of them tried to post to the list the system unsubscribed them and the list administrator had to manually re-subscribe them. It got to a point where for a while members with AOL email addresses could not be on the global list unless they provided an alternative email. I dont remember the details, but it was to do with the way the AOL system recognised the routing of the messages through the system. I think it got solved when the software for the email group was updated. Problems with AOL happen from time to time - on one occasion I couldnt post anything to individual AOL addresses and my ISP sys admin had to intervene. The root problem as I see it is that AOL are so keen to stop spam etc that they turn their filters etc up so high that they end up blocking far more than they should. Brenda I don't see messages from Jeri, Devon, others I can't think of at the moment, and surprisingly Jacquie Tinch, who as most of you know, is my sister. However, I do see messages from them if they write to me directly. I know I am not unique, as Jane mentioned earlier. So... I have come to the conclusion that as I can communicate with them individually with no problem, that it must be something in the way that the Arachne service is provided. Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
Amanda, thank you for your excellent explanation. Happily (for me) I've not been affected because I use gmail and thunderbird. I do hope that arachne continues as a mail list. It sends messages to me and I don't have to go searching for them. I've looked at facebook, but its so time consuming. Maybe I'm lazy, but I think its because I'd rather be making lace than constantly having to chase up every facebook alert. Jane, not sure what to make of ending up in your spam box :-). But thank you, I'd wondered about winding up a length of lace. However, I also have Jennifer MacPhersons book with some pretty brooches in it. Re: [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
Hi, Okay, I'll come out of lurkdom to comment on this Jeri. In Australia Mothers Day is always the second Sunday in May and Fathers Day always the first Sunday in September. The northern hemisphere summer is of course our winter and definitely not conducive to making lace in the open, parks, etc. We celebrate Catterns Day in November as do the rest of the lacemaking world so we in South Australia, an probably the rest of our country, try to have a lace get-together around this date. For us in South Australia it is usually the third Tuesday of the month when we have our meeting - we enjoy friendship, games and and early Christmas party. We don't usually have a meeting in December but start back again with meetings towards the end of January. Thankfully we have an air conditioned venue so life bearable in the middle of our very hot summers. Cheers, Shirley T. - Adelaide, South Australia in the middle of winter, wet and chilly but never any snow in our city. Arachne is an international group. My messages of June 15 and 16 have acknowledged that there are 365 days in a year, and that any specific date will be shared by other special events in some nations where lacemakers are located. In consideration of lacemakers everywhere, we also need to think about those in other climates when establishing a date to which we append the word International, and so Spring or Fall may be best. I asked for feedback from those in Australia and South Africa, but none has come, perhaps because they receive our mail in Digest form. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] June 21 International Lace Day
As to conflict with Father's Day on June 21, 2015 in some nations - some people may think this is a perfect way to celebrate fathers. We have not yet come to a decision for future years. If you skipped my 2 messages, they will be on the opening page of the archives as recent mail under the subject I have repeated on this email. Choosing a date like the 3rd Sunday in June (though that has not been cast in concrete, yet) means that some people will be able to celebrate lace in most, but not all, years. This idea is better than setting a firm date. http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html Sorry, but I do think like a person working in an international business, because I worked in ATT's International Division before retirement. Though that was 21 years ago, the lesson has stuck. Telephones - and computers - connect us 365 days a year, and people behind the scenes make that happen. Thinking along the same lines, there is a need for all kinds of people, like those who administer medical assistance, 365 days a year, also. We Americans have to bend a little and consider priorities in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America who are reading Arachne mail. Thanks, Amanda, for taking the time to write this explanation. Unfortunately, we have an absentee list owner. I have limited admin rights. If changes can be made to the list config file, let's talk off-line. If it requires back-end configuration, that's out of my hands. Thanks, Avital Arachne moderator On Wed, Jun 17, 2015 at 7:19 AM, Amanda Babcock Furrow la...@quandary.org wrote: Since there are three pieces, there are three solutions. Two, read your email from a mail provider that ignores DMARC policies, and you will be able to read everyone's messages... at least until your provider joins the modern era. Or three, adjust the mailing list software so that it no longer passes messages unchanged (this is why the digest option works!), making the DMARC policy irrelevant. In this solution, emails would look to the other mail servers as if they originated from the list, rather than from the person who sent the email, and the DMARC policy would not be triggered. If the list admin wants to pursue option three, I'm happy to offer further assistance. [lace] Bolster pillow
Hello Again! Just wanted to recap my bolster-making experience for future reference. The core is a SPRI ethafoam cylinder purchased from Sports Authority in Florida. When I was at the gym, I noticed that they used foam cylinders for various exercise programs--an aha moment. At the store, I tested the foam with a pin it seemed to do the job. My 18 cylinder was about the same price as a large ethafoam cookie pillow was approximately 5.5 in diameter. They also sell longer/fatter cylinders. My friend Rene in Ohio helped me wrap the foam with strips of wool melton. This type of fabric is densely woven, felted suitable for making coats. She had part of a bolt leftover so I was the lucky customer! IMHO, wrapping the core requires two people--one to roll the cylinder the other to put tension on the wool strip. We started the wool with a pin at each edge. To start a new strip, we used masking tape to secure the butted seam (no overlap!). The project required 1.! 5 yards of wool the final wrap was secured with herringbone stitch along the edge. There was a small overlap at each end so one end was secured with herringbone lacing--like you would do to mount needlework. Turning down the overlap made it easy to pull on the cover. The overlap at the other end turned down naturally when the cover was cinched up with cording. The final product is about 7 in diameter, almost 19 long ready to make lace in Iowa! Hope this info helps anyone else who needs a larger scale bolster. Re: [lace] Question about beads - conservation files
Dear Antje, You asked about sequins. There is more than one type of sequin or similar attachment for lace and they are made from different materials. There are probably manufacturers in many countries and they may have different ways of manufacturing sequins. I suggest you draw thread through the holes in a few sequins available to you, to test if the thread is damaged. You will also want to test for color transfer from sequins (all colors in a manufacturer's line), and how they react to water. Old sequins were made of gelatin and they will dissolve in water, so test old supplies. Special metal sequins - called spangles - are mentioned in Gil Dye's 2012 Gold Silver Edgings - 16th and 17th Century Lace - Book 1, on page 9. They are used in Gil's reconstructions of lace edgings. At the time of publication, there were no suppliers and her spangles had to be made by hand.. Now, in 2015, spangles are available. They are hand cut from gilt silver specifically for bobbin lace, priced $1.50 US per piece! A maker was found, because spangles were needed for the recreation of the Layton jacket in Plimoth Plantation, Plymouth Massachusetts (search our archives if you wish to know more details). Devon was a volunteer lacemaker for this project. Few people will use these spangles, but you need to be aware of them since you are a lace expert in Spain, Antje. The US retail supplier can be found at: http://thistle-threads.myshopify.com/collections/accessories It is also possible to get small flat sequins that have been made from metal. I have used these in blackwork embroidery on linen, as was done in the 16th century. They were supplied by an Embroiderers' Guild teacher, and are not available from hobby shops. You need to test anything foreign that you work into laces. And those who are now making types of laces that will be washed should test all med ium-dark colors for colorfastness. We personally know that in the late 1970's DMC changed dye formulations due to enactment of new water pollution laws. DMC did not make the new colored threads colorfast. Bad corporate decision. Those who spent many hours embroidering and then washed their projects had a very bad result that could not be reversed. (If you have old DMC thread in your stash, you need to know this! Set aside some time, test your old threads, and throw away those that bleed.) Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 6/17/2015 2:48:52 A.M.
