[nysbirds-l] Montauk Shearwaters

2017-07-14 Thread JGIUNTA746
Following up on Nick Bonomo's message regarding shearwaters in Montauk I
was able to see about 40 shearwaters. I would say that most were Greater but
at least one was a Cory's. Even with a good scope they were a little far
out. Best viewing was from the concession stand area and not from Camp Hero.
Thanks for the tip

[nysbirds-l] Shearwaters at Camp Hero, Suffolk County

2016-06-06 Thread JGIUNTA746
This morning between 9:30 and 11 am I would estimate 300 Shearwaters
were flying back and forth, feeding and landing on the ocean. They were mostly
in two flocks with the western flock consisting of Cory's while the
eastern flock was mostly Sooty. With the Sooty flock I picked out at least one
Greater.
Also present were many terns including 4 Black Terns.
Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay- July 29, 2015

2015-07-29 Thread JGIUNTA746

I went to Jamaica Bay today scouting out the area for the upcoming NYC
Audubon shorebird class and walk this weekend. I found the conditions on the
east pond to be unsafe.
I was only able to walk in about 20 feet on the south side of the east
pond went I started in sink into water and mud. Breaking the suction caused by
the mud was not easy. I had to retreat. The north end of the east pond was
even worse. I was not able to pass the phragmites before I started to sink
into mud and water. I did not see any shorebirds at all on the east pond.

I tried the west pond and recorded a total of three shorebird species (
semipalmated sandpiper-10, semipalmated plover-3, oystercatcher- 6). I told
the rangers at the desk that the east pond should be put off limits because
of safety concerns.

When you think it couldn't get any worse it did. I do not recommend
anyone going to Jamaica Bay.

[nysbirds-l] Marine Park Nature Center Bklyn

2014-05-11 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date: May 11, 2014

Taking a break from our regular birding spots my wife and I went to the
Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Center off of Ave. U in Brooklyn. The birding
was good as we saw some 30 species. The highlights were: Clapper Rail,
Solitary Sandpiper ,Killdeer, Oystercatcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Eastern
Kingbird, and Warbling Vireo.
For warblers we only saw two, the Yellow and Common Yellowthroat.

The park is greatly improved since the last time I was there a few years
ago. There were benches along a well defined trail and overlooks at some
spots. A bridge over the mudflats made for good walking and good viewing. I
also believe that a lot of invasive non-native plants were removed and
replaced by native species. It seems that some new plantings were recently put
in.
I wish that some other parks in the NYC area would be like this.

Best,
Joe Giunta

Seaford/Massapequa area, and following the crows we found a Great Horned Owl.
This
preserve also had a good number of singing Red-winged Blackbirds and Common
Grackles.

Later I went to Jones Beach where I saw Tree Swallows in field West End 2,
Killdeer in the median between fields 1 and 2 and finally American
Oystercatchers, seen from field 10. Also present at Jones Beach were Common
Loons,
Horned Grebes, Horned Larks, Peregrine Falcon and Marsh Hawks.

A very nice day to be birding,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End- Shrike, Snowy Owls

2013-12-02 Thread JGIUNTA746
Dec. 2, 2013

After some searching I found the N. Shrike at 3:30 in the Fisherman's
Parking lot just past the Coast Guard station.

After talking to people in the west end of Jones Beach I believe that
there are at least 6 Snowy Owls in the Jones Beach/Point Lookout area. Some
owls were found east of west end 1 while others were west of west end 2. The
easiest view of an owl was the one perched on top of the last and tallest
building in Point Lookout. It was on top of the dome cover for the
telescope. From there the Snowy had a complete view of the entire area.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull - Quebec

2013-11-20 Thread JGIUNTA746

Nov. 19, 2013
Considering the tremendous rarity of the Ross’s Gull in Eastern North
America I decided to make the 400 mile one way trip to see this bird. This
bird
was reported in partial breeding plumage, that is pink, and its location,
just north of the NY state border at Chambly Quebec, was listed at sewage
lagoons opposite #2417 Boul. Industriel (my Tom-Tom found it right away).
The information about exact location and unique color made for a high
probability of success. After leaving Nassau County at 4am I arrived at noon,
waited 2.5 hours and the bird appeared. The Ross’s Gull in this plumage was
just a fantastic sight. The thought that a bird that is hardly ever seen
except seasonally in northern Alaska or Siberia was here in front of me was
totally awesome.
At the sewage lagoons there are three ponds but only one is close and
easily visible. There were many birders there helping to locate the bird among
the numerous Bonaparte’s Gulls and Ring-billed Gulls.
It was a trip well worth it!
To see if the bird is still present go to Birdingonthe.net, Quebec. Don’t
know French, no problem, just copy and paste the messages into the many
free online translation services.
Best,
Joe Giunta

[nysbirds-l] Montezuma NWR

2013-11-06 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date: Nov. 5, 2013

My wife Betsy and I birded Montezuma NWR today. Before we got to the refuge
we visited Dave Kennedy, at 43 Mynderse St, Seneca Falls and after 10
minutes we saw the Rufous Hummingbird that had been visiting his feeders.
Thank
you Dave for being so accommodating.

The highlights at Montezuma were many but I especially like to note a few
special experiences. We saw the two Ibises (Glossy and White-faced) at
very close range. They were just passed the visitor's center and seen about 15
feet away from us. It made for great ID work.

We saw 20 Sandhill Cranes in the marsh at Knox-Marsellus best viewed from
the Towpath Road.

Another highlight was having both Tundra and Trumpeter Swans next to each
other in harvested corn fields just south of Railroad Road off of Van Dyne
Spoor Road. The birds were about 30 feet from us.

Great Birding Day

[nysbirds-l] Birding Jamaica Bay

2013-10-26 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date:Oct. 26, 2013

The BBG (Brooklyn Botanic Garden) birding class recorded 49 species while
birding Jamaica Bay NWR. The highlights were the ducks which were found
entirely on the East Pond. We saw: Black, Gadwall, Mallard, Pintail (5),
Wigeon, Wood, N. Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Scaup, Bufflehead, Ruddy. We
also
saw American Coot. The number of Yel-rumps was impressive but it was the
only warbler recorded. We had excellent looks at Blue-headed Vireo.

Sparrow numbers were OK but only 4 species (Song, Swamp, White-throat,
Chipping) seen. Someone showed us a photo of a Vesper sparrow taken 15
minutes earlier but we couldn't locate the bird.

Also nice was a flock of 20 Snowy Egrets fishing together with Cormorants.

open for birding. The highlights were 4 warbler species (Yel-rump, Cape
May, Palm, C.Yellowthroat) and 6 sparrow species (Field, Savannah, Song,
Swamp, White-throat, White-crowned). Blue-headed Vireo and Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker provided good views. The birds were in small pockets of activity and
could be easily missed. The best area was the north side of the golf course.

The BBG (Brooklyn Botanic Garden) birding class recorded 38 species during
our trip at Jones Beach. The day started off very slowly with few birds on
the sandbar at the Coast Guard station. The tides were wrong so we
revisited this area later with better tides. I'm very glad we did because with
high tide approaching we saw: Royal Tern (3), Oystercatchers (100), Red Knot
(4), Dunlin (x), Sanderling (x), Short-billed Dowitchers (2), Black Skimmer
(3), Black-bellied Plover (15). For landbirds the highlight was a
Clay-colored Sparrow mixed in with Chipping Sparrows at the picnic area of
Zacks

[nysbirds-l] Bird Report-Orange, Sullivan, Ulster Counties

2013-06-17 Thread JGIUNTA746
Date: June 15-16, 2013

The NYC Audubon overnight birding trip to Orange (Sterling Forest),
Sullivan (Bashakill, Neversink) and Ulster (Shawangunks NWR) Counties was very
successful with 79 species seen by most members of our 9 person group.
Conditions were good for birding at Sterling, Neversink and Shawangunks, but
Bashakill was mostly flooded with Haven Road closed, and the walking side
trails
mostly underwater. We did not record Virginia Rail or American Bittern as
those areas were not accessible. The bird song at Neversink and easy
finding of 4 Upland Sandpipers at Blue Chip Farm (Shawangunk) made up for
it.Some
highlights were:

Golden-winged Warbler ( Ironwood Dr. Sterling)
Bald Eagle
Common Moorhen
Whip-poor-will
Pileated Woodpecker
Bank Swallow
Winter Wren
Eastern Bluebird
Brown Creeper
Blue-headed Vireo
Blackburnian Warbler (many)
Black-throated Green Warbler (many)
Hooded Warbler

[nysbirds-l] Eagles- Croton

2012-02-06 Thread JGIUNTA746

Location: Croton, Westchester County

Our NYC Audubon birding group visited Croton. The lack ice and snow
prevented the Eagles from concentrating in any one spot. We were able to see
three adult Bald Eagles fly over at the Croton RR station and one adult fly
over at Croton Park. Other raptors seen were Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper's Hawk,
Sharpshinned Hawk and Turkey Vultures. Ducks were also hard to find but we
did note a raft of Common Goldeneye and many Common Mergansers. Land birds
were not to be found.

At dusk we visited George's Island and noted one immature Bald Eagle come
in to roost.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay- Hudsonian Godwit and water conditions East Pond

2011-08-02 Thread JGIUNTA746
The Hudsonian Godwit was present today, Aug.2. The bird was seen, scope
view, from the end of the path that passes by Big Johns Pond. The bird was
mixed in with Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and many ducks. The view was not
easy and many thanks goes to Ken Thompson who stayed with the 'larger' bird
until we could finally see its bill.
On a negative side the water conditions at the East Pond are very poor.
There is hardly any shore for shorebirds to feed and almost impossible for
birders to walk around. Even the south end of the East Pond is very difficult.
The north end of the East Pond is not even approachable.

[nysbirds-l] BBG Birding Jones Beach

Place: Jones Beach and Point Lookout Nassau County
Reported By: Joe Giunta

The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (BBG) birding class concluded its fall series
of bird walks by visiting Jones Beach and Point Lookout, Nassau County. For
the day we saw a total of 42 species. There were many highlights. We
started the day off by seeing a Marbled Godwit mixed within the flock of
American Oystercatchers on the sandbar off of the Coast Guard station. Also on
the
sandbar were a good number of Red Knot. We walked the median finding a
good number of Red-breasted Nuthatches. We checked the sparrows near the
Coast Guard station finding 3 White-crowned Sparrows mixed in with the more
common sparrows. We left this area and headed to West End 1. After about 45
minutes we were able to get great looks at a Northern Shrike, a 'lifer' for
many in our group.
We got a telephone call alerting us to the presence of a Lark Sparrow at
Zack's Bay. Our group was able to located the bird very readily among the
picnic tables to the east of the entrance. We made one more stop at Point
Lookout before heading home. Next to the first jetty we saw about 50 Common
Eider.
This was the sixth and last walk for the fall season, a season in which we
recorded a total of 116 species.

Sam Jannazzo and I started birding at the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station
and walked to the turnaround and back. Along the way we saw three warbler
species (Yellow-rumps, Pine and Blackpoll) and three sparrow species (Song,
White-crowned and Field). We also saw Merlin, Sharpie, and Cooper's hawks.
Overhead flew about 2000 Tree Swallows make for a nice fall atmosphere.

After Sam left I went to Point Lookout and continued birding. The windy
conditions must have forced all the gulls and shorebirds onto the parking lot.
There it was very easy to drive up to the birds and get good views. I saw
Black-bellied Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Dotwitches, Dunlin, White-rumped
Sandpiper, Red Knot and Semipalmated Sandpiper. As for gulls the three
regulars but an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.

I took a walk over to the 'Rock Pile' and the good birding continued. I saw
Palm warblers, Northern Parula, Indigo Buntings (2) and Field Sparrows
(4). In all I recorded 40 species for the day.

[nysbirds-l] South Shore Birding 9-24-10

2010-09-24 Thread JGIUNTA746
9-24-2010

Sy Schiff and I (Joe Giunta) started our birding day at Jones Beach Coast
Guard Station. There were easily over 800 birds on the sand bar. The species
we noted were Dunlin (FOS), Black-bellied Plover, Am. Oystercatcher,
Willets, Dowitchers, Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderlings, Common and Forster's Terns
and Black Skimmers. The mosquitoes were so bad that we left this venue only
after a short stay.
We went to Robert Moses SP and at the volley ball courts of field 2 we
found one Clay-colored and one Lincoln's sparrow. Over the ocean we did spot
one or two Gannets. The hawk watch was very quite with us only recording
only one Kestrel.

[nysbirds-l] Red-breasted Nuthatch- Aug. 28

2010-08-28 Thread JGIUNTA746
My wife Betsy and I saw a Red-breasted Nuthatch at Camp Hero, Suffolk
County. The last time we had a Red-breasted Nuthatch during August was in
2007.
The following fall and winter produced Pine Grosbeak, Common Redpoll and
Red Crossbill all within NYC or close to the city. Hopefully the same
will
happen again this winter. Time will tell.
Best,
Joe Giunta
