Thanks, David and George. George, your suggestion reminded me I'd wondered if stretching a rubber tube over a bottle might grip the Iris cage, eliminate any rattle,a nd keep everything in there. H. [RBW] Re: Water (bottle) Retention
Deacon, I have used the Kleen K. bottles for years and only remembering one or two incidents of them bouncing out. Probably because I hadn't pushed the bottle all the way in. I prefer to use the small bottle on the down tube and a large bottle on the seat tube. They work fine with either the Nitto or King cages. They did not work well with the Bontrager cages which came on our tandem. The biggest problem I have encountered on rough roads has been rattle between the bottle and cage. The Nitto racks are light enough to squeeze and tighten their grip. If it really bothers you, KK sells a plastic carrier that is made specifically for their bottles. I tried it and found it quite functional. KK sells a variety of tops, although few stores seem to carry them. On line you can get ones w/out the loop, but in the end I have not found it to be a big deal; I just position the loop in the cage so that it is away from my mouth when I lift it out. No other reengineering is required. Michael On Tuesday, November 4, 2014 7:10:09 AM UTC-5, Deacon Patrick wrote: Thanks, David and George. Great to hear, Michael. Thank you. From what I've read, the plastic/nylon/polyglobutinidesomesuch all break in the cold. That won't work. Patrick, I have used the 27oz Kleen Kanteen bottles for several years and like them. I have Iris cages on my Atlantis and the Kleen Kanteen plastic cages on my Surly LHT: http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/accessories/klean-kanteen-bike-cage.php I have never had a bottle fall out using either cage; both hold the bottles tightly. I personally do not like the tactile sensation or sound of sliding the bottle in and out of the Iris cages, but that is my own issue. The plastic cages have been very reliable on both my bike and my wife's. None have broken; however we do not ride much below 20F. [RBW] Re: Water (bottle) Retention
I use all different bottles but esp in the winter I use stainless steel with cap covers - I ride lots of country roads where they manure the fields so the dust is a bit funky. I like to have a clean spout to drink from. The rattle of the bottles in the cages and the scraping sound when putting them in or taking out bothered me so I wrapped the the cages in a couple of wraps of handlebar tape on the front and sides and presto: tight fit and no noise!! As far as cages, I love the looks of the Iris and the VO Moderniste, and they both hold the 27oz bottles well, but I've broken several of both cages. They just fatigue over rough road surfaces. So, for my Mtbs, I have switched to Profile cages and an Arundel Looney Bin cage that I can fit a 40oz Klean Kanteen in. Here is a photo of the set up I used for a bike packing tour earlier this year. The Profiles definitely aren't as pretty as the Iris, but they take more rough use IMO. I have 2 - 27oz KK Reflect ( brushed finish) and two knock off iris cages. Here are some of the my observations... Even though I washed them thoroughly I still get that funky SS smell/ taste. They rattle like crazy. The loop and bottle in the cage. I'm going to have to try some of the the ideas mentioned in the other responses. I wrapped my loop in hemp twine and that has helped some what. The dirt and grim from the gravel roads has destroyed the finish although, I'm sure I can clean it up with some Bar Keepers friend. Get insulated because the single wall freezes in no time and I know you ride in some cold temps. Hope this helps. with chris and andy as ride leaders there are lots of sharp unexpected turns, stairs to ride down, curbs to jump, suburban cut-throughs to navigate, things to push your bike up, and gravelly descents. nary a kleen kanteen has fallen out. they have also seen many a shawn ride, but those are filled with expected turns, safety cautions, hazard notifications, and the like, much less stress on the iris cages on the shawn rides. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Water (bottle) Retention
Why not try some of the better designed and constructed nylon or whatever cages? I've got four on my Fargo made of heavy, tough, thick black plastic and designed with an interrupted ring to grab the bottle. They don't drop bottles even at 30 mph on terrible washboard, and no straps needed. FWIW: I broke 2 of the very pretty Nitto Butterfly cages carrying large double-walled bottles (32 oz, IIRC). The brazing was just not up to the weight and stress. The Irises that replaced them (this on my road bikes) haven't broken yet; they are not as shiny -- or as expensive -- but, IMO, are the better cages. This'll work just fine on an 18 oz. Klean Kanteen bottle: http://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Koozie-Insulator-Neoprene-Purple/dp/B009ITPB7Q Bust off the belt hook; you won't need it. Then, remove the cinch button and tie the strings together tightly around the neck of the bottle. Though intended for a water bottle, this koozie fits onto the stainless KK like a glove and will increase the overall diameter just enough so that it fits snuggly into any run-of-the-mill bottle cage without rattling or coming loose.
