I have to find out why an "Enter Password"

Wow ! I didn't expect so many responses!

I guess I need to explain it betterdon't know
the buzzwords.
On the left of my Mail window is a pane titled
"Names".
In that pane are my e-mail accounts and "Local
Folders" and "News.Outlook.Express".
Under (within) "News.Outlook.Express" is
"m.s.seamonkey" - this group to whom I am
messaging.

A LONG time ago, I used to be able to get a huge
list of various newsgroups (?) with all sorts of
subjects in them to choose from - except I forgot
HOW to get to them.
This "News.Outlook.Express" has Mozilla and
Netscape as subgroups (right term?) - that is
all I can pull up with the subscribe function.

To be honest - I don't even remember how I got to
this Newsgroup ! It was set up ages ago and still
survives - as I do at 71.

I am trying to get to a group like this that can
explain why Windows XP keeps asking for a program
password w/o the program being activated.
It is like Win XP remembers an unrelated action
and repeats it ad nausium.

DoctorBill

Better explanation.
I have a lot of stuff stored as Screenshots (jpg
files) of Bank and Stock Market data.
I have a program to view and manipulate these
files (Graphics Workshop Pro - [GWP]).
I have "Hide Files and Folders (HFF)" which
conceals whatever folders you set it up to conceal.
I have set HFF to hide the folders that the GWP
can read - so only I can access them with a
password.
I invoke HFF and it asks for a password. i
provide the password.
HFF opens and I click on "Unhide" - now I can
open GWP and access my secret files.
When I am done, I invoke HFF, enter the password
and click "HIDE". Then exit HFF.
Back to no one can see them - hidden (how I
don't know!)
Better ?
I know this is not for this Newsgroup - I'm only
asking HOW to find a Win XP newsgroup !

DoctorBill

As mentioned by several people, first add a

to that server add the group:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

From help, I found. (But first you will need to pick a newssaver.)

Open the Edit menu and choose Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings. You
see the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box. You can perform
these tasks:

Add Account: Click this button to set up a new mail, news or blogs
& news feeds account. Be sure to type the account information exactly as
it is given to you. Move through the screens with the arrows, or click
Cancel to stop account creation.

blockage

2014-02-08 Thread Not@home
I have Vista with SeaMonkey 2.24 (this problem has been present for
quite a few versions prior).

When I turn on the pc and load SeaMonkey, it goes to my homepage very
promptly. However, when I click on a link from my homepage, the new
page loads about 90 percent (the page is visible, but I can't scroll, or
do anything else). It says it is waiting for xxx (this varies) and is
frozen for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, then completes loading. Then
the problem apparently resolves, and I can browse normally with no delay
for the balance of my session. I don't have the problem on my other pcs
(one with Vista and one with Windows7).

Where should I look for elimination of this problem?

How long is your home page? If it is much longer than the view port
(the display area), can you scroll it immediately?

In my primay profile, I have a long home page (the result of exporting
my bookmarks to an HTML file); it takes 61 uses of the Page Down key to
scroll from the top to the bottom. On launching SeaMonkey, I can't
scroll, find, or do much of anything for a few seconds after the initial
display. (Actually, I can scroll about 10 lines before it refuses to
scroll farther.) I suspect this is a result of having very many
bookmarks. In another of my profiles, I have only 8 bookmarks; I don't
have any delay there.

My home page is CNN.com. It usually loads fairly promptly and I can
scroll in almost no time. It is when I go from there to a news item
that I get the delay, and my curser is frozen until the next page
finishes loading.

I'm no expert, but I have an extension named CheckPlaces 2.6.2 that I

When SM has finished trying to collect your e-mails, could you try
File->Delete Trash then File->Compact Folders and then try to download
you e-mails again??

Normally, SM downloads all you e-mails into a file called "Inbox"
(without the quotes) and these emails are indexed in a file called
"Inbox.msf". When you delete an e-mail, it isn't really deleted, it's
just marked for deletion and doesn't show up in your inbox any longer.
It is not actually deleted until you do what I suggest above.

It maybe that your SeaMonkey is having probs because the files have
gotten too large.

If this doesn't fix your problem, report back and someone might suggest
something else to try.

After posting here I got through to my ISP and they checked to insure

My experience is that there are very few Java applets left on the normal

(Java and JavaScript are two entirely different things.)

You can see a safe Java applet here. If your Java is enabled, the time

So the answer is: unless you know of a specific web site(s) that actually
do use Java applets, you can safely remove it - or at least disable it,
possibly via the use of the PrefBar extension (also makes it easy to
manage many other things, including en/disable JavaScript).

All that is a function of the Web site. In general, the site is timing
how long it has been since the last time you accessed its Web server,
how long you have been inactive on the site. Some sites even allow you
to set the allowed duration of inactivity.

For financial and sales sites, this is a safety feature. You are logged

your login. After all, many bank transactions or consumer purchases are
done online from the work place where other individuals are present.

I go to a web site daily, and it is often slow. I assumed this is

navigate. My problem is that the temporary bookmarks do not appear when
I open bookmark manager.

Is there a way to make them appear, or should I just create a folder in
the hierarchy to keep them in?

Bookmarks

2011-11-28 Thread Not@home
I have a lot of bookmarks, most organized. But some I only want to keep
temporarily. When I want to keep one temporarily, I use bookmark this

ones I use file bookmark. Since my touchpad skills are deteriorating, I
have taken to keeping bookmark manager open, as it is easier for me to
navigate. My problem is that the temporary bookmarks do not appear when

Not really a SM problem.

2011-10-21 Thread Not@home
I have three pcs. Two use Vista; one uses Windows7. I have the same SM
2.1.4 on each, and the same firewall/anti virus.

On the Vista machines, some we sites refuse to remember me, so I have to
log in each time I visit. On the Windows7 machine, the same websites
remember me, so I am already logged in when I revisit.

Is there some setting in Vista that I have wrong? Or could this be a
firewall problem (I use FSAV and I'm not really clear on what the
settings are, so I use defaults)?

Sync advise

2011-10-15 Thread Not@home
I have three pcs, two using vista and one using win7. While I have
always used them independently, they are networked. I want to be able
to coordinate my mail, bookmarks, addresses. So my question is if I use
Sync, will the end product reflect the data from my most heavily used
pc, or will it somehow use the data from the less heavily used pcs? In
other words, will sync allow me to select which profile to use on all
pcs, or do I have to copy my favorite profile to each pc before signing
up for sync.

A further complication. In looking around, I found that I have multiple
profiles on my primary pc. How do I find which is the one I am
currently using?

Per the suggestions of Stamenkov and Hatlak, I installed the CheckPlaces

giving me the option whether to delete a bad bookmark or (via the
Bookmarks Manager) allowing me to fix it.

I added Checkplaces and it works well. Thanks for the guidance.

Would you be so kind as to tell exactly how to set
browser.bookmarks.autoexporthtml to true? I have looked at all the
preference settings and haven't found any thing. I'm obviously not an
expert.

Your bookmarks are now part of places.sqlite.

If you set browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to "true", they will be
exported to file bookmarks.html every time you terminate SeaMonkey.
When you use the Bookmarks Manager to update your bookmarks, you can
also export them to bookmarks.html (or any other file). Then, you can
still use bookmarks.html as your home page, as I do.

I find it harder to use because the window is so small and there is no
way to make it larger (I have extensive hierarchies that don't show well
in the small space.) Other than that, it works well once you are used

My wife's computer loads the whole file using Seamonkey, and my computer

This makes me think the problem is not with adobe, but with the
configuration of either Vista or Seamonkey on my computer, but I have
been all through the preferences section and can find nothing that to me
sets a limit on the size of files I can open.

Any suggestions on where I should look? I already tried swapping
computers with my wife, but she caught me.

(A lurker is someone who reads the messages in a newsgroup but never
posts there. "Lurker" is NOT a disparaging, negative term. Indeed,
everyone is encouraged to lurk in a newsgroup for a while before staring
to post. Some estimates indicate there might be as many as 10 lurkers
for every individual who posts.)

A lurker in this newsgroup sent me a private E-mail. He suggests the
following (in my words):

1. Open Adobe Reader.

2. On the menu bar, select [Edit> Preferences].

3. On the left side of the Preferences window under Categories, select
Internet.

4. On the Internet pane, uncheck the "Allow fast web view" checkbox.

5. Select the OK button.

I have NOT tried this. When I reached step #4, I noticed that the
"Connection speed" selection indicated 56 Kbps, the speed of my dial-up
connection. I changed that to 1 Mbps; my cable modem supports 1.4 Mbps.
When I then went to view the hotel guide for Madrid, the entire page
downloaded to SeaMonkey in one continuous operation, unlike the way it
downloaded in my prior reply in this thread.

You might try the lurker's solution, but I suggest you also check what
Adobe Reader thinks is your connection speed.

Thank you and the lurker. I made the changes to adobe reader (including
the speed), then went to the site to check it. It loaded so quickly I
sat there for a few minutes waiting for it to start, then realized it
had already finished.

So I am all fixed and can get back to planning our trip to Spain.

I see a problem with the hotel guide at
<http://maribelsguides.com/mg_madridhotels.pdf>. After downloading
about half the PDF file, further downloading occurs only as I scroll
down in the file. The complete file downloaded only when I tried to
view the last page.

I saw a similar problem with a dial-up connection at Vanguard mutual
funds. I wanted a form for converting part of an IRA to a Roth IRA.
The PDF file was less than 500 KB but would stop at slightly over
200
KB. Nothing I did would result in the remaining file downloading.
What
was especially frustrating was that the form was only 8 pages out
of 36
in the file -- 8 pages near the beginning of the file -- but the
partially downloaded file could not be opened; the entire file
had to
download before I could open it. With a broadband connection, the
problem went away.

I suspect this is a server problem. The server might time-out
without
having sent all packets.

Had no problem loading the Link (use PDF Browser Plugin by
Schubert) Do
have a 1mb synchronous DSL Line.

I have cable. It downloads completely using IE on my computer, or
Seamonkey on my wife's, but with Seamonkey on mine it consistently
stops
after downloading 818.51 KB of 1.57 MB.

Is the PDF file opening with the same method between your wife's pc and
yours ? I think about this: On one pc the pdf file is opened inside the
SM screen. On the other pc, the pdf file is opened inside Acrobat
Reader
started by SM. The way of managing a pdf like this 2 possibilities
is an
option inside Acrobat Reader.

I make SM to open pdf outside by acrobat and no problem

Did you say that now your problem is solved ?

no, that was not me.
I suppose pdf take the same amount of cache regardless they are viewed
in a window of SM or not

I cleared the cache (under preferences, advanced, cache) and barred that
site from setting cookies, but the problem remains.

On my wife's computer, which works, the site opens as if it was another
copy of seamonkey showing the pdf. I.e., at the top of the screen is a
tab for seamonkey, and a tab for the pdf.

On my computer, the pdf opens as if I had gone to another site. I.e.,
the pdf is the only open screen and to get back to seamonkey I just use
the back key.

How are you downloading the file? Are you right clicking on the file (in
this case the picture) and then using 'Save Link Target As', or are you
using some other method?

I just click on the file, which works with the other files on that site.
