I have only one point where I can enter the port number:

Gate / Properties / Gate / Local port.

I have set this to 110, and in TB I have sent the POP port to 110, and
it works.

Whether I set the SMTP port in TB to 25 or 110, makes no difference.

Unfortunately when replying, sometimes the reply is cross posted,

There is a port number entry in the SMTP -> NNTP (likewise in POP ->
NNTP) gate configuration. You can enter any _unused_ port on your
machine. You have to enter _this_ port in The Bat!'s SMTP port. 25
will work fine as long as you don't habe another program which is
listening on port 25 at localhost.

Due to AV (PCCillin), Spampal, GPGRelay which handle my
incoming/outgoing mails i decided to use 1700 / 1701 for MyGate.

I can read but not write. TB says "Cannot connect to server". I
re-read the Help on SMTP -> NNTP, but cannot get it to work.
I even use a valid email-address (one that I don't check very often). I
used to use port 25, but the helpfile says I should use the same port
as defined for the Gate, so I use port 110. Still no success.

What am I doing wrong?

You may have seen that I replied to Roel that I basically do the same.
So, I will explain my solution.

Consider three newsgroups or, in general, 3 addresses: A, B and C. And
three folder FolderA, FolderB and FolderC where you what to sort
messages respectively. Obviously, if a message has been sent to A and B
you want to sort a copy to FolderA and FoldrB. This is my set up:

Filter A: IF A is in Recipient
 Move from Inbox to Inbox
Copy to Folder A (Set in Actions tab)
Continue processing with other filters (Set in Options)
Filter B: IF B is in Recipient
 Move from Inbox to Inbox
 Copy to Folder B
  Continue processing with other filters
Filter C: IF C is in Recipient
 Move from Inbox to Inbox
 Copy to Folder C
  Continue processing with other filters
Delete ABC: If A or B or C in Recipient (use Alternatives tab)
Delete the message (set in Actions tab).

Hope that is what you were asking for.

Why not Carsten? What I suggested is so that MIDs will be unique to
_his_ messages and then he can use this fake domain in his filters to
look for replies to him and threads that he is involved in. Nothing to
do about spam, etc., because he can still use his real address in From
and Reply-To.

I agree. From what I hear - and this is my personal experience, too - if
you use "Nospam" in your mail address (like mine "nospamadr.dk"),
you get very little spam: most of my spam is from addresses picked up at
my web sites.

No, please don't do that. If you want to be part of USENET then you
should follow the rules.

The most simple way not to get spam is to fill in an *existing*
e-mail address in the To: field which is under your control (you
don't have to read those mails, create an extra gmx, hotmail,
realbox, etc account for that) to prevent mail bounces. Reply-To:
addresses are hardly spammed, so you should create another e-mail
account for that which you read once a week or so.

IMHO it is not very polite to hide your name or mail address -- but
this of course is my personal opinion.

If you definitely don't want to publish your e-mail address then
use [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You should never use fake addresses which are not under your control
(like [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], ...), because
*they* will receive the bounces.

Yes, but this would mean that people cannot send me mail as the address
is fake. I'd rather not have the real address in the signature.

M> - Create a folder for each newsgroups you are subscribed to (I assume
M> you already do this) and on the Properties/Identity tab include your

Pling!!! Now I _just_ realised what you mean
(as you can see from what I wrote above) - by setting the "fake" domain
at the general account level and the real domain at all the folders, I
can achieve what I'm after?

Thanks a bunch, I'll try that.

Of cause this method does not distinguish between replies to my message
and other messages in the sub-thread I am in, as my MSID is in the
References section in the whole sub-thread. It will make the whole
sub-thread I'm in, right?

However, I have noticed that direct replies to one's messages have the
MSID of the replied-to message last under references - now I only need
some RegEx to hit on only messages where my MSID is the last in the
string of references.

I forgot to answer to this part of your message a few days ago, sorry.

The way I solve this is:
- Create and use a separate account for newsgroups on this server.
- On the Properties General tab, include a From and Reply-To address
with a fake domain that you know does not exist. This fake domain is the
one that will be used to build MIDs and you can then filter on it.
- Create a folder for each newsgroups you are subscribed to (I assume
you already do this) and on the Properties/Identity tab include your

I'll try changing it to a higher figure but the error message

What is your port setting in TB! for pop3 and smtp?
And what did you fill in with message management (delete from servere)

Which NNTP are you using (and is it free so I can check?).

No, I don't have any username and password for the server.

Just for testing purposes, could you name a server that does not
require authorisation? - If MyGate works here as expected, then I can
go and find out how to get auth for the desired server, or what other

OK, I'm too stupid.

I have subscribed to a newsgroup, using MyGate.

TB connects fine to localhost but find "0 messages in the mailbox". I
thought when I hit Receive New Mails in TB, MyGate should get the
messages/postings from the NG. And I do see internet activity in my
DUN icon in the systray. There is no error message in the log.
Number of messages is set 100 (default).

Server: news.cis.dfn.de
Group: de.alt.comp.the-bat

I also subscribed to what looked like a high-traffic list, something
starting with comp. just in case there were no postings in that NG.
With the same result: no messages.

I come from Xnews.

I would like to have all the same place.

I prefer the spell check, QT, macros, etc in TB. Also I only need to set
up a bunch of stuff one.

Binaries are not good with MyGate (AFAIK) and some filtering may be
easier with XNews.

My conclusion: I will use MyGate for text groups until Ritlabs makes a

I've found a fairly easy way to do this:

* create an incoming filter for each newsgroup that makes a copy in
the correct folder, but doesn't move the message. Set the option
'continue processing with other filters' to ON.
* create a catch-all filter at the bottom of the incoming filters that
deletes the message. (Make sure you've got a working filter for
every group before you turn this on!)

However, there's another problem you should watch out for:
Don't filter on just the name of the newsgroup!

When you've got a few newsgroups with partial names (there are
subgroups beneath them) they'll get a copy of message when one of
their subgroups is on the receiving end.

For instance:
newsgroups: be.comp & be.comp.hardware
Both folders receive a copy of a message that's only addressed to
be.comp.hardware...

The problem lies here:
My filter checked for the presence of 'be.comp' in the received-header.
What it should have done is check for 'be.comp' followed by a '>', ','
or a line-break.

Solution:
Also turn regular-expressions on, and let this be your filter-string:
"be\.comp[>|,|\n]" recipient yes (offcourse without the quotes!)

The filter-string for be.comp.hardware would be
"be\.comp\.hardware[>|,|\n]" recipient yes (offcourse without the
quotes!)

and so on & on...

Yes, because that's the server I used.

Sorry, I may have misled you. I differentiate on mailing lists like this
one, not on newsgroups.

One definitely needs to use "invalid" as top-level domain.

Yes. That would work - except what I use a real address hosted at a big
ISP (@adr.dk). Since the MSID (which is that thing that can be filtered
on) includes this (e.g. "References:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>") - and other people also has a MSID
containing "adr.dk", I don't know what to do.

How do you differentiate between "Involved" and "Reply to me" filters -
isn't References the only header to filter on?
