The system has worked fine for the past four years so I doubt that there

Is someone able to tell me the commands to clear out the logs and

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-21 Thread Shellness

I managed to get a number of things running, e.g. Squeeze Server, which
is a -lot- quicker than on my PC However, I just couldn't get the root
pointer correct so I thought the best things was to reinstall.

I did this with setting my own partitions and this seems fine, except
that on boot the machine requires the pressing of F1 to go from
initiation to booting the OS. Previously, when it was pointing to the
wrong root location, it went straight from machine start into OS boot.

Does this suggest that I have a setting wrong in the boot directory
somewhere (I set the loader as MBR (please see below), I can't remember
the other option)? For the record I have the following hardware
settings:

Mount Type Partition
/boot ext2 /dev/hda1
/ ext2 /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-CF_Root

In the install I set the root as

Mount Point /
Logical Volume Name CF_Root
Size5536Mb
File Type ext2

Make Logical Volume (this was set for swap, I removed the swap option
but did not know how to kill this LV so I presume it is dead space.
Tips on how to recover it welcomed):
Mount Point n/a
Logical Volume Name No_Swap
Size1984Mb
File System TypePhysical volume (LVM)

Mount Point /boot
File System Typeext2
A…. Drive hda
Size100Mb
Volume Group(no record of this)
Force to be Primary PositionYes

Use Grub Boot LoaderY

Boot Loader Config I made no forced entries

Grub Password No

Boot Device /dev/VolGroup00/CF_Root
ClearOS Enterprise Edition /dev/VolGroup00/CF_Root

Boot Loader

I will fiddle on but expect I will have to reinstall when time permits
next week. whilst this is a set back I feel I am learning things and
some of it is being retained:-)

Thanks as always.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-19 Thread Shellness

Well, I seem to have had a degree of success. Thanks to you all for the
tips and forbearance. There are some open questions.

I started a new install prior to NeilT’s advice and selected the manual
partition option. I reckon I have made a settings error, however, since
I can boot from the CF without the USB being attached -but- I have to
edit the start sequence to change the root from hd1,0 to hd0,0. (The
edit is in GNU GRUB, grub editroot (hd1,0).) Looking at the
hardware reports I have:

Mount – Type – Partition
/boot – ext3 – /dev/hda1
/ - ext3 - /dev/mapperVolGroup00-LogVol00
/mnt/HardDrives – ext2 - /dev/sda1
/mnt/HardDrives – ext2 - /dev/sdb1

So, the question is, can I safely edit and save the boot to point to
hd0,0 (what phrase do I use and how do I do this)? (The grub editor
doesn't save the setting, it is only good for one boot. I also wonder
whether /dev/mapperVolGroup00-LogVol00 is the right place for the
root, anyway.)

From the above it can be seen that I managed to kill the boot from the
HDD and reformat both drives – epoch’s nuclear option was nice and
quick.

Other queries:

I tried to load GParted after loading the OS (I did this because I did
not see NeilT’s message until the install was halfway through). After
entering the language number the screen went blank. I left the machine
for 15 mins but there were no screen changes so switched the machine off
and pulled the USB. I could not see GParted from the command line.
Should I have waited longer or done something else? How do I get to
the graphic version (Sourceforge says “Choose System Tools #8594;
GParted Partition Editor” - I don’t know where to find System Tools,
does GParted put a tool item in the OS' graphical screen)?

I understand that I need to minimise the writes to the CF, as commented
by Rich. I have seen the advice in
http://www.ulverston.myzen.co.uk/mini-itx/pages/hard_drive_options.htm
that the command noatime stops access time writes to the disc. Would
the forum recommend any other tweaks (please also see para below)?

I also understand that I need to stop swaps to the CF. Looking at
“etc/fstab” I have “/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01” set as “swap”. I presume
that this is the same disc as the root partition (see hardware report
above). Can I change this using GParted? What do I change it to?

I intend for my HDDs to stop spinning when the server is idle (I don’t
expect to access the discs constantly and I have built the unit to be
as cool and quiet as possible). I understand from the www.ulverston
advice that I should therefore set the discs to ext2. NeilT
recommended setting them to ext3. Does NeilT’s recommendation change
in the light of my spec?

Lastly, I have managed to set my PC up to view the server in My Network
Places. However, I can’t see the HDDs. I put them both in a server
sub-folder called /mnt/HardDrives (see the hardware report above). Can
the forum see where I may have made an error in them not being visible
in XP? (NB I am presuming that “HardDrives” is the name of the
sub-folder and I'm not confusing XP by giving both sda1 and sdb1 the
same nickname.)

Thanks again for the help, I finally feel that I am making progress –
all I have to do is commit the exercise to memory (mine).

I didn’t grasp the “commenting out” direction(*) and could not find
anything helpful on the internet. Consequently I attempted to follow
epoch’s suggestion and I think I must have made some duff entries as
the machine failed to boot (the final text on the console screen at end
of the boot attempt was Kernel panic (+)). I tried to run rescue mode
but could not identify the FTP server so had to reload.

To avoid me making the same mistakes and having to reload again, if
anyone can spot my error(s) perhaps I can make the edits correctly.

found “nano –w menu.lst”. I edited the text items, did ctrl-o and set

/dev/hda3 but as “root” or “Label”. Also, I didn’t have the expression

understood them, e.g. changing root to root=LABEL=CF-boot

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-18 Thread Shellness

Thanks for the commenting out explanation - it will be a few more
hours before I can try it since I have hit the buffers again. After
reloading the OS from the USB the system will only boot with the USB
attached. If I adjust the BIOS to boot from the CF the system just
gives me the GRUB prompt. Looking at the hardware report I see:

“/” is /dev/hda2
“/boot” is /dev/sda1 (where the SCSI is listed as a USB reader) – this
seems to confirm that the system is booting from the USB

Thinking I might be able to fix things from the GRUB prompt, after
digging around on the internet I tried a number of ruses, including:

“root (hd” tab – this gave no results
“root (hd0,” tab – this gave no results (I tried “root (hd0,x)” with x
set to 1, 2, 3, 4 5 but no result)
“kernel/boot/” tab – this gave no results
“find vmlinuz” – error 15: file not found

I abandoned this route and thought that if the system boots from USB I
might be able to connect my HDDs, boot from USB, format the HDD with
the boot on it, then ask this forum how to back out of the USB boot
with the two HDDs in a clean state. However, booting with the USB as
the boot priority 1 and everything else disabled, the system booted
from the HDD.

In summary, I am in a worse place than yesterday as I can’t even boot
from the CF, even with the HDDs unattached.

I shall try reloading the OS again. If you have any thoughts on where
I have gone wrong, your thoughts are welcomed – I loaded the OS in
exactly the same way as I did the last time when it got on to the CF
perfectly well.

Thanks again.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-18 Thread Shellness

Thanks again for the replies. I wonder whether you can comment on where
I am going wrong in reloading the OS (or better still, how to get the
boot to work from the CF without requiring the USB to be plugged in).

Thinking that I may have had a corrupted ISO that caused me to get the
GRUB prompt I reloaded the USB with a new copy of the OS and
reinstalled from this. I still got the GRUB prompt after the reload,
however, so I am stuck in terms of knowing how to get the boot to come
from the CF (presuming that there is a boot capability on the CF).

If it helps, without the USB the machine goes straight from the BIOS
set-up to the GRUB prompt. With the USB plugged the machine goes
straight from the BIOS set-up to flash a quick statement “Grub Loading
GRUB2” before going through the boot. I then tried some editing
(please see below the following comments).

Dear NeilT: I have no means of formatting the HDDs short of buying a
USB-to-SATA cable hence I am going through this routine (plus, as you
say, it is a learning experience). I thought I might be able to format
the HDD by putting it in my lap top but my laptop uses ATA. Likewise, I
thought I might be able to bodge a connection in my CD module case, but
the connectors here were different, too. My distro doesn’t obviously
provide a way of selecting the installation drives (unless this is in
the partition set-up, I took the “default” option rather than “manual”
thinking that manual was beyond my nascent skill set). Thanks for the
pointer to GParted

Dear epoch: I didn’t attach the HDDs as this is how I came to have the
unit booting from the HDD – the OS loaded onto the HDD and forgot the
CF altogether. Since the CF is not booting the unit I can’t reconnect
everything and use the “dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/XXX bs=512 count=1”
string to kill the HDD without leaving no means of rebooting. Hence
the need to get the CF-boot back.

I did go through the editing path again. I note that the first time I
did this I edited the wrong part. I have copied below the screen from
menu.lst (apologies but I don’t know how to get screen dumps nor how to
post them here so it is in text).

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this
file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda2
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Linux (2.6.18-164.6.1.v5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.6.1.v5 ro root=LABEL=/1
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-164.6.1.v5.img

The first time around (when I got stuck) I changed the Commented line
“kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda2”rather than the first
mention of “root” after “title”, i.e. “kernel
/vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.6.1.v5 ro root=LABEL=/1”. This time I edited the
root after title, saved and rebooted. Everything was marked as “OK”
except for two lines:

“Mounting local file systems: mount: mount point 1 does not exist”
“Mounting other filesystems: mount: mount point 1 does not exist”

I then tried editing /boot/grub/device.map (typing “nano
/boot/grub/device.map”) and got the device map as
(hda1) - /dev/hda
(hda0) - /dev/sda
I changed “(hda0) - /dev/sda” to “(hda0) - /dev/hda” and saved it.
I then tried editing menu.lst and it still had the final comment line
as “#boot=/dev/sda”. I went back to the device map and this still had
“(hda0) - /dev/hda”. Looking back at the menu.lst again I saw no way
of changing the “boot=/dev/sda” to “boot=/dev/hda”.

I rebooted without the USB and got GRUB. I rebooted with the USB and
got to the console. The hardware report reconfirmed:
/ - ext3 - /dev/hda2
/boot - ext3 - /dev/sda1

I briefly considered the nuclear option of dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
bs=512 count=1 but since I can't boot without the USB this would have
left me with yet another reload.

In summary, I am stuck with the USB needed to get the boot going. I
can’t see what to edit to get the boot starting from the CF (presuming
that this is possible after my two failed reloads).

As always, steers welcomed. Thank you.

Thanks for your patience. The prompt after booting is “[r...@server

is the swap from “~” to “/” following the server name.

I then tried -umount /dev/sdb1- and got the response -umount: /: device
is busy-. I retried yesterday’s efforts and got the same responses
(-fuser –m /dev/sdb1- returned over 50 items, then -fuser –k /dev/sdb1-
got the root prompt. -umount /dev/sdb1- got the original response
-umount: /: device is busy-.

I seem stuck in a cycle of being unable to stop the disc to unmount it.
I feel I must be repeating the same mistake. Any further advice on
what to do is appreciated.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-16 Thread Shellness

Thanks for the reply and explanation of disc size. Meanwhile, I keep
hitting buffers. Using -umount /dev/sda1- got the response -umount: /:
device is busy-.

I looked around the internet and found the commands -fuser –u
/dev/sdb1- and then -fuser –k /dev/sdb1- which each returned the root
prompt. I then tried -umount /dev/sda1- again and got the same
response -umount: /: device is busy-.

I then tried -fuser –m /dev/sdb1- which returned over 50 items. I then
tried -fuser –k /dev/sdb1- again and got the root prompt. I then tried
-umount /dev/sda1- again and got the same -response umount: /: device
is busy-.

Out of desperation I tried -fuser –km /- and managed to kill the whole
box.

I rebooted and got my original disc layout (i.e. hda1 (CF) as /boot,
sda1 as /mnt/Drive1 and sdb1 as /). After more internet digging I
tried -umount –l /dev/sdb1- and got the response -could not stat
/dev/sdb1 - - - No such file or directory. The device apparently does
not exist; did you specify it correctly?- I then tried -fdisk
/dev/sdb1- and got the response -Unable to open dev/sdb1-.

I then logged on to the console and saw 4 mounted items, all with
identical free (854Gb), used (1.29Gb) and size (902Gb) – a total size
of 3.6Tb which is plainly wrong given I have a 12Mb CF and two 1Tb
HDDs. The mounts were:
/boot - /dev/hda1
/mnt/Drive1 – dev/sda1
/ - dev/sdb1
/sys – sysfs

The console then froze. CTL-ALT-DEL did nothing, so I had to do a hard
reboot. The hardware report then gave:
/boot - /dev/hda1
/mnt/Drive1 - /dev/sda1
/ - /dev/sdb1

I have run out of internet searches and guesses. Any hints on how to
get sdb1 to unmount, please?

2010-05-13 Thread Shellness

I thought I was going to report back that everything went well.
However… I wonder whether you can spot where I have gone wrong
and advise on what to do, please?

I got an 8Gb CF to use in place of the 2Gb and everything went
swimmingly, things seemed to install fine until I was asked to remove
the boot device and reboot. I de-powered, removed the USB with the
ClearOS ISO on it, switched on and then checked the BIOS to provide for
booting from CF (I left the HDDs disconnected). The system went through
the intro screen, I hit F1 to resume, which brought up a screen listing
the board components with a countdown at the bottom with “press Esc to
boot”. I hit “Esc” and the system then went grey screen with a letter
j and a flashing cursor. That was it. My router showed no extra
attached devices so I could not see the mini-ITX from my PC.

I de-powered and powered on with the HDDs attached and CF disabled
(yesterday I loaded ClearOS and this went on the HDD, hence my original
post), the mini-ITX went through the same intro and board components
screen described above, to go to grey screen and a flashing cursor.
Again, the router showed no extra attached devices

I de-powered, put the USB back in, switched on and set the BIOS to boot
from the USB. The mini-ITX went through the same intro and board
components screen, then brought up ClearOS and went to the log-in
screen. Thinking that I might have fixed the problem I tried the
sequence again without the USB and I got the grey screen, letter j and
flashing cursor. So, I put the USB back in, rebooted and hit any key
as I saw GNU GRUB on the screen ad was given the option of:

- Enter to boot the OS
- e to edit the commands before booting
- a to modify the kernel arguments
- c for command line

Not knowing what to do with this I hit “Enter” and the mini-ITX booted
up. If this helps diagnose the source of my problem, I noted that in
the boot-up there was a line saying “hda: DMA timeout error” and
another saying “ide: failed opcode was: unknown”. The screen also gave
an earlier line as “hda: CF Satelite Pro CF Card 8GB, ATA disk drive”

Given that ClearOS appears when I have the USB inserted, I am guessing
that the USB has taken some kind of role in the boot up. Any ideas on
what to do here, please, to get it to fire-up from the CF alone?

On a separate tack, on a number of occasions I tried to connect to the
mini-ITX from my PC but I got nowhere, the router didn’t even show it
as connected. Using the console I changed the Gateway setting to be
“Standalone, no firewall” and then I got two messages on my PC browser
depending upon what I did:

- “Bad Request - Your browser sent a request that this server could
not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.
Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please. Hint:
https://SERVER.DOMAIN.lan:81/”. Using this https did nothing.

- “Your certificate contains the same serial number as another
certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new
certificate containing a unique serial number.”

I presume what this means is that Firefox is confused about the safety
of me connecting to the mini-ITX thinking that I tried to connect to
the device yesterday with my original ClearOS load. How can I reset to
get Firefox to see the mini-ITX?

Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-13 Thread Shellness

Thanks for the reply.

I started again, reloading everything from scratch, and it worked. I
still have a problem, however.

If I boot with the HDDs unattached everything goes fine. If I boot
with the HDDs attached, and the BIOS set to disable the SATAs,
everything goes fine -but- it is booting from the HDD. I know this
because I used a different root password for the CF and the HDD
installs (the CF password works only when I boot without HDD, the HDD
password works only when I boot with HDD(s) attached. Also, I used
different Host Names and these switch according to the mode).

I cannot fathom why this is happening and have rebooted (say) ten times
in each mode and I just can't get the mini-ITX to boot from CF when the
HDD is attached, -in spite of checking that the BIOS is set to every
time-.

Any steers, please?

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-13 Thread Shellness

Unfortunately I’m still stuck. The BIOS doesn’t offer a boot priority
as such, it offers boot sequence (with Enabling/Disabling per item). I
managed to format SDA but I just cannot format SDB which has the boot on
it. When I type the following commands I get the subsequent
statements:

fdisk /dev/sdb
p
1
Enter
Enter
w
“The kernel still uses the old table.”

mkfs.ext3 -m 0 /dev/sdb1
“/dev/sdb1 is mounted; will not make a filesystem here!”

Thinking I might be able to get around this by dismounting the drive I
tried to find how to dismount the drive. “unmount” doesn’t work and
“apropos mount” brings up “mount: nothing appropriate”. I can’t find
anything under “mount”, “dismount” or “unmount” in Clear’s web site,
either.

Looking at the Hardware Status in ClearOS Reports I get the following.
A number of things seem curious:
- 1) The HDA is the 8Gb CF and yet, somehow, the SDB thinks it's HDA3
- 2) both SDA SDB are 1Tb yet the size is shown as 916Gb 902 Gb
respectively – I’ve lost nearly 100Gb per HDD

Mount - Type - Partition - Free - Used - Size
/boot - ext3 - /dev/hda1 - 60Mb - 11Mb - 75Mb
/ - ext3 - /dev/hda3 - 854Gb - 1Gb - 902GB
/mnt/Drive1 - ext2 - /dev/sda1 - 916Gb - 200Mb - 916Gb

Do I gather from the above that the SDB is somehow seeing itself as an
HDA.

I then powered down, swapped the SATA cables and rebooted. I got the
following Hardware Status Report (note, SDA is now the old SDB which
has the boot still on it). There was no CF (HDA) showing and no SDB:

When I swapped the SATA cables around, the mounted file systems showed
only:

Mount - Type - Partition - Free - Used - Size
/ - ext3/dev/sda1 - 854Gb - 1.29Gb - 902 Gb

I have rebooted well over ten times and not managed to change anything.
If I had access to an old PC I’d just connect the troublesome disc to
it and try to format it from there, however I don’t have access to an
old PC.

Can you see any way out of this, per chance?

Thanks.

[SlimDevices: Unix] Booting from Compact Flash

2010-05-12 Thread Shellness

I have built a mini-ITX using the advice in
http://www.ulverston.myzen.co.uk/mini-itx/index.htm and got as far as
loading ClearOS.

Before I can set-up the server with Squeeze and as a music/data
repository, I wish to set it up to boot from Compact Flash (CF) - the
case has a CF slot - so that I can reserve the two 2.5 drives as
music/data stores which act as disaster recovery for each other. Per
the advice in http://www.ulverston.myzen.co.uk/mini-itx/index.htm I
will also spin the discs down when idle to save on noise, heat and
power (my mini-ITX board is fanless).

I have read everything I can find on setting up the CF but, as a
-complete- Linux novice I am at sea - all of the pointers I have seen
presume a level of competence/familiarity which is greater than my one
day of experience. Is anyone able to advise (or point to) the steps to
preparing the CF, moving the kernel and other appropriate actions, per
chance?

Thanks.

Interesting, thanks.

You say you did no preparation of the CF beforehand. Does this mean
you didn't even format it?

What size is the CF you use? Mine is 2Gb. The ClearOS ISO is just
over 700Mb.

Thanks.
