Three days ago, I purchased a 128GB unlocked T-Mobile iPhone 6 Plus. The first thing I did, even before leaving the Apple Store, was to insert an A T T Wireless SIM card, just to make certain it was truly unlocked (smile). I also had a sales person put on a screen protector. After returning home, I restored the phone from my 5 S and I was amazed at how complete the restoration was, given that my backup was not encrypted. The six plus is so fast that what, in the past at least, has taken up to 25 minutes to complete, only took approximately 15 minutes. The Restore was so thorough that it automatically put the new phone in Field Test mode. For those who may not know, field test mode allows one to toggle the cell signal indicator between either bars or numbers as a percentage of decibel strength. At the time of purchase, the phone came with iOS 8.1.1. So, when I got home, I updated to iOS 8.1.2. Now what I find fascinating is that, although on virtually every 6 Plus I used until this one, I could not use VoiceOver to summarily clear notifications as I did on my 5 S running 7.1.2. At the time of this post, I have tested or assisted in the purchase or setting up of no fewer than 20 iPhone sixes or 6 Pluses. On a whim and for no good reason that I can recall, on my new 6 plus, I single-finger, double-tapped on the Clear-All buttons in the Notifications Table and, each time, doing so cleared all of the notifications just as it does in iOS 7.1.2. Why does it work on this device? I have no idea. I'm just glad it does work for deleting each item in the Notifications Table can take a lot, relatively speaking, of time to complete. At any given time, I have access to, including my own device, 3 6 plusses. Earlier today, I laid them down side-by-side and compared the Settings options. What I discovered is that, to my astonishment, not all iPHones are created equally. I don't know why, exactly, but there are some settings options differences between the T-Mobile, Sprint, and A T T versions of the 6 plus. I have not thoroughly examined the Settings area of the Verizon Wireless 6 Plus. I will not bore you with the minor details but the one that stands out in my mind is located in the Cellular settings area with regard to accessing LTE voice and data. It's probably of no significance but still ... My T-Mobile plus has more options allowing for greater definitions. Let's see, anything else? Oh yeah, although I am running iTunes 12 on my Mac, the Windows 7 PC, to which I sync my 6 plus is still running iTunes 11; it appears to be working just fine so I will not update to 12 unless or until it is absolutely necessary. My two newest favorite features of iOS 8.1.2 would have to be Predictive text and SMS forwarding to my Mac. By the way, I was thinking about downloading the Alex TTS in addition to Samantha. Does anyone know if you can delete the Alex TTS voice from the device, should you choose? If so, how? Finally, for the beta testers among us, aside from having to reinstall various profile definitions, there have been no glitches in my upgrading from a 5 S to a 6 Plus. I have decided to leave my 5 S at iOS 7.1.2. In conclusion, I am totally delighted with my 6 Plus and, as yet anyway, have not encountered any VoiceOver bugs with any of the third-party or native apps I used on my 5 S, with the exception of Safari. Oh, the Apple Maps app is fast becoming one of my Favorites to use on a regular basis. This was definitely not the case in IOS 7.1.2. While I'm not saying that I would choose it over A T T Navigator, I am saying that, as a free solution, so to speak, it is now a viable option and fun to use. I hope some of you find this report helpful. Again, Happy New Year to everyone. Mark -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Requesting Suggestions On Scanning A Large Paperback Book WithThe KNFB Reader
Eileen, This is serendipitous as I have just started to scan some cookery books myself.now, although K n FB is a very good app the requirements for scanning recipes requires complete precision.even when using my stand scan pro I find there will be the odd error.these errors are so slight that if I was scanning fiction, for example, they wouldn't matter, but with recipes…so, I decided to bite the bullet and ask my partner to use his flat bed scanner and PC to create PDF files.he then can pass those files over to me and KN FB will digitise them.I should mention that I no longer have a PC or laptop or my own flat bed scanner. his PC/laptop are barred to me!neither does he have any screen readers on them.don't I sound pitiable?however, this was my choice: having decided that I would never, never pay the extortionate rates that the adaptive software was asking of me again.I know there are programs such as NVD a et cetera which I could now use, but when I decided to give up my laptop this wasn't really a viable option.Plus, I wanted to push my iPhone to its limit.so, in short, if you can obtain PDF files, you can use the KFFB reader to OCR them for you.I don't suppose your cookery books are for a Thermomix are they?this is my latest indulgence and has turned me from an appalling cook into really quite a good one!unfortunately, all the recipe books for the Thermomix do not exist in E format.good luck to you and happy cooking! The ideal solution would be to have a scanner with automatic document feeder and to destroy the book so you can just run the pages through the scanner. I have a Fujitsu Scansnap IX500 and while it would only scan to PDF, it is so super blazing fast and does automatic souble sided scanning. If I had a paperback book with 300 pages I could probably scan that with that scanner in about 5 minutes and then just use Openbook to recognize the single PDF file. I guess now that Jaws does OCR on entire PDF documents you could even open the PDF in Adobe Reader and tell Jaws to do the OCR. It would be interesting to see if that works. What is the book you are trying to scan, Eileen? If you have a Bookshare membership, you could request that book and even offer to send the print copy to a volunteer willing to to scan the book ... RE: Finding the Alec voice on an iPad mini two
If it’s the original iPad Mini (the one released prior to 2013) Alex is not an option as you can only have Alex on iOS devices which have a 64 Bit processor and at this point that is the A7 processor which came out last year and which is in the iPhone 5S, the iPad Mini Retina and the iPad Air. Of course Alex also works on all 2014 releases with the A8 processor like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini Retina second generation although it did not get the A8 processor. RE: My Recent Experience upgrading from a 5 S to an iPhone 6 Plus, With One Question
If you can afford it, it's always a good idea to buy the newest model available at the time. This would be a 6 or 6 Plus at this point and which one you choose would depend entirely on your preference with respect to the size of the phone. The 6 Plus is very big, but it does have the advantage of a big battery and hence very good battery life (at least for an iPhone). Just keep in mind that it's unlikely you have any smartphone for 7 years as you did your old phone. I think for most people 4 or at the most 5 years is the maximum lifetime of a phone nowadays since after that time you'll run into issues where your OS may not support new apps and so on. Of course batteries degrade over time and may not hold much of a charge any more and it's typically not worth spending $100 or more to pay somebody to put a new battery into, for example, an iPhone 3GS which is now the model of iPhone which if somebody had bought it at its release in the summer of 2009 would be now 5 and a half years old. It wouldn't even make sense if you had an iPhone 4 from 2010 although I know people who do have those and I'm always surprised how well they still do hold their charge. Buying an unlocked phone at full price would only make sense if you are able to get an inexpensive plan from an MVNO where you only pay $30 or $40 a months so that the $40 or $50 you save each months add up to a large enough amount over what would be your normal 2-year contract period that you actually save money in the end. I sure would prefer an unlocked phone, and I don't want to be thinking of needing to do any significant upgrading once I do get a new phone. I will not bore you with the minor details but the one that stands out in my mind is located in the
Re: 6 or 6 plus
The only difference that might relate to accessibility is OIS. Optical image stabilization means that shaky hands or slight movements of the camera won't matter as much, good for free-hand OCR. That said, the iPhone 6 already has this feature in its software, whereas the Plus has it in hardware, so who knows if it truly makes enough difference. All other gestures and commands will be the same on either one. Oh, braille screen input is different: in Tabletop Mode, you can put your fingers side by side instead of in the slight V shape required on the 6 or below. Some people also enjoy using the on-screen keyboard (in landscape mode) more since they can type normally, as though on a small keyboard instead of hunting about with one finger. Those are all going to vary from user to user, though. I can't think of anything else that will be different. Deidre, Verizon sells GSM unlocked phones. Verizon phones can’t be used with another CDMA carrier not using the Verizon network. If you need to use the Verizon network, a MVNO using the Verizon network would be far less expensive than signing up for service with Verizon itself. On the other hand, if you want all the conveniences, such as a physical retail presence, that a major brand name carrier offers, consider that option. Many here find these are nice but not necessary services. Re: question on braille displays
Also remember that input and output are now separated in iOS 8. Space-g now controls output while space-236 controls input. Both of these are three-way cycles through six-dot, eight-dot and contracted. As for eight-dot or six-dot, neither will give you contracted braille though there may be instances when one or the other is preferred. Only contracted gives you contracted braille and it is input space-236 that allows you to type in contracted braille or six-dot or eight-dot but the output depends on space-g. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. You need to start a new email with your new subject rather than doing it as a reply to some other message to that list. I remember early on in my Internet experience having somebody really bawl me out for this and it was pure ignorance on my part. You can argue whether I should have known better, should have understood about threads on email lists, but I truly didn't. I did finally figure it out one day on my own, but I don't remember ever having it explained to me because it was assumed it should be obvious. Re: confused about options for setting up phone
Yes, there is also an option to transfer purchases from your iPod to iTunes, which is a good idea to do when you've downloaded apps to a device and not the computer. If you do an encrypted backup, make sure you use a password you won't forget! If you forget it, you are completely out of luck. But, if you have made sure all your apps are backed up on the computer, restoring your new device from that backup, should get you everything you want. Encrypted backups also backup passwords, which is really nice. You could called Apple Accessibility and have them help walk you through what you need to do. You'll get the most restored from an iTunes encrypted backup. Also, make sure you sync your iPod with your computer in iTunes so the apps get copied to your computer and will be included in the restored backup. I made the mistake with a friend thinking that apps on her phone would be automatically included in an iTunes encrypted backup but since the apps were downloaded on the phone which was never synced to iTunes, the apps were not restored. You can always re-download them from the iTunes Store but if you're using a preferred older version, you'll be out of luck because you'll get the current version from the iTunes Store. Good luck. How do I get back to the beginning of a book in Voice Dream Reader?
Hi. I was happily listening to a book for about ten minutes with Voice Dream Reader, then I fell asleep. I woke up about an hour and a half later, and decided to figure out how to get back to the beginning of a book. I double tapped and held the rewind button, but I couldn't figure out what to do from there. I read the help documentation, as well as tried to look up info on Apple Vis, but I had no luck. I know you need to go by chapter, but I don't know what to do to get there, or how to tell VDR to go to that point. I'd appreciate help on this. Thanks in advance. Hi Dean, Can you explain a bit more how this one works, I have never heard of this app before. I have downloaded it, but need to use the Jaws OCR feature to use it, I get no access with NVDA. For example, I could ask “How many days are between January 12 and February 28”. SIRI will provide the answer which is 47 days. Wording is sometimes a bit tricky because if I ask “How many days is it from January 12 to February 28” it doesn’t understand the question. It seems with some things SIRI is becoming more finicky when it comes to how you ask even though when Apple released SIRI they made a big deal out of how you can just talk to SIRI in normal language. I also used to be able to ask SIRI how long it was until popular holidays, but when I just asked “How long until Easter”, SIRI answered “3 months”. This is sort of correct, but Easter is on Sunday, April 5 which is 94 days from today and when I asked SIRI “How long until Pentacost” the anser came back as “4 months” which is even less correct since SIRI told me correctly that Pentacost was on May 24 which is 1 week shy of 5 months. SIRI also correctly can answer when my birthday is and that of my wife, but when I ask “How many days is it until my wife’s birthday”, it wants to do a web search for that. Definitely a bit inconsistent. It’s funny, but when SIRI first came out Apple said it was a beta version and I have never heard officially that it was out of beta. Every time I read something like this it pushes me farther towards going further towards a later model and version of a phone. This report was excellent. Meanwhile my old cell phone which is 7 years old has a charger or contact point for charging that is now defective. Question is do I run around to the Verizon store to see what deal or spiel they give me, get on the phone or just go down to Apple! Taylor Sent: Friday, January 02, 2015 3:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: My Recent Experience upgrading from a 5 S to an iPhone 6 Plus, With One Question Hello Everyone and Happy New Year! Hello Sandy and Charles, My Optibookk 360: no longer functions, which would have been my flatbed scanner of choice. It use to get such perfect scans, as there is a very narrow frame on the outer edge to scan the text near the spine of a book. I am left with my Brother all-in-one printer, which does an okay job on the text near the spine. I'll have to play with the 2 OCR text-to-speech sofftware programs to see which one will do a better job in the OCR of the cookbook. Re: My Recent Experience upgrading from a 5 S to an iPhone 6 Plus, With One Question
One more reason you should try and stay fairly current with your smart phone is because they yusually make improvements to the hardware such as improving the radios in the phone with respect to cellular performance and features, wifi performance and features, and yes even bluetooth performance. An example of this is the iPhone 5 versas the iPhone 6 series. The new voice over LTE protocol is only available on the 6 series. Also LTE performance is better on the 6 because it allows for more frequency choices. LTE became available on the iPhone 5 and was not available on the 4 I don't think. remember 3 years in the computer /tech world may be more like 6 to 10 years. In effect your not throwing away money because your ditching your phone after 2 or 3 years since its more like 6 to 10 years old at that point if you get my drift. Sorry not expressing myself as well as I would like. Quite tired today. Don On 1/2/2015 10:36 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: If you can afford it, it's always a good idea to buy the newest model available at the time. Question is do I run around to the Verizon store to see what deal or spiel they give me, get on the phone or just go down to Apple! On a whim and for no good

RE: confused about options for setting up phone
Susan, I may not be the best one to address this topic but I'll say what I believe is right. Good luck. RE: Requesting Suggestions On Scanning A Large Paperback Book WithThe KNFB Reader
Hi Eileen, I was curious about Thermomix as well, but while scanning with KNFB Reader is very much on topic, I just used Google and searched for “Thermomix” since I felt a cooking gadget was hardly on topic for the Viphone list. If you Google Thermomix you’ll find plenty of results as well as their website. As I said, it is a cooking gadget or whatever you want to call it, but when I see stuff like that especially if it’s been around for decades as seems to be the case with this, I always wonder why it’s not available in every store and used by every household if it’s so great. Only big thing it has going for itself seems to be that its German and I can say from my own experience that “Made in Germany” is definitely a good thing *smile* Just as a last comment, on their website it did say something about all their recipes being available somehow via the website. So, Sandy, have you checked if you can access the recipes that way? Today I actually found an A T and T store right here in town. Don't worry, after all the remarks about going for a newer model phone, I will be down at Apple within a week - 2 people have offered to take me down. Meanwhile, I bought a $25 card to see how the phone works; it's an I Phone after all, right? The $25 gives me a mere 250 minutes and unlimited free texting, no data. I can drop it after a month if I like - there's no contract. I'm confused by something the guy said though ... be careful he kept saying about the minutes which I thought came in response to my saying I only had 3.7 ggs left on the phone. Maybe what he was saying didn't have anything to do with that but was more like anything over what you are allotted for the month you get charged for. I naively was thinking that when your minutes run out however fast or long into the month, the phone simply stops working! Then there is the no data issue. Did I hear in the ether of the shop that I would indeed get charged for data if I were somewhere that there were no Wi-Fi? Can't be. I didn't pay for any data, right? I'll need to go back to the shop tomorrow to clarify this, plus voice mail is not a given to set up. Something is missing and it can't let me do it, I don't know what. So I chose a dog barking for a ring, and I texted a bunch and saved one contact. Weird thing is that it is very difficult at times to get out of messages. I've never had trouble with the app switcher before, but now I do. Time to go back to Dresner. And, I'm ditching my old 7 year old Samsun before Jan 5, the beginning of my next billing period, so Siegar doesn't have to shake his head about anyone hanging onto an old flip phone like that for so long. For one thing now that I can dictate messages, I am happy. The recognition is excellent. As for talking, 250 minutes with no long distance on my land line won't allow for much of that. I'm laughing. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Calendar question
Hi all, I already know how to enter all my calendar information in after I select a date and then double tap on the add button. But what I don't know how to do is the meetings I want to put in are on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. So how do I select the second and fourth Thursdays of each month so that it says the meeting is on the second and fourth Thursday of the month ? Thanks. Advice needed
This evening I got a message on my 4S stating that a new iPhone had been used on my iCloud account. I have more than one IOS device but have not activated a new one for perhaps three months. What is the appropriate action to take in this instance? Thanks. Don Roberts -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Pandora Problems
I have to reset my Pandora account. I have set it up on the computer, but I cannot change my iPhone settings. When I try, it won't let me edit. How do I substitute the account I set up on the computer? Any ideas welcome. Thanks. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
