Re: [WISPA] Leasing Companies

2010-06-04 Thread Joe Laura
If you have a good business plan your probably better off dealing with a
local bank IMO. If you cant convince the bank your business plan is good
then something might be wrong with your business plan. We do out of pocket
now but several years ago after showing the bank our business plan they gave
me whatever I wanted as long as I showed them my MRC. Joe Laura

goldmine when all the signups started comming in. Then as tennants started
firing up their own A/P's others would connect to them and cancel service.

Try PRTG. www.paessler.com It just takes a sec to download it for free and
you can add one or two radios. I monitor B/W on over 100 CPE's. Joe Laura

I have a tech on his cell at the site. So timeing isnt a issue. It could
possibly be the radio is messed up worse than I thought. It links up to the
switch just fine. I couldnt get to it remotly earlier so hoped it just lost

We have always used Geovision with analog cameras. It works well and down
the road its cheap to change a M/B or whatever if needed. I have a few out
there running well over seven years. The clients seem to like it as well.

It does it automatic. You just put in the ip space. There is a feature that
does this. It also grabs the name from each canopy and lists that as well.
Its a pretty cool program. I have about 150 radios being graphed.

2008-09-04 Thread Joe Laura
Thanks to all of the offers for help! Its really appreciated! After getting
generators up and running I only had to change one backhaul antenna and all
seems well so far. I can see power comming up in different areas as clients
come online. What helped alot was having a pass to get on the rooftops as
soon as the hurricane passed. We did not have this for the last hurricane
and it really slowed things down. Thanks to homeland security for taking
care of that problem. Time to go refuel.

Stay safe you guys! Very well said Mac. You took the words right out of my
mouth. I am planning on staying downtown in the data center but watching
things very closely. I will make my decision tomorrow. This time Homeland
Security has given us re-entry passes ahead of time so if we do have to
leave reentry will not be as hard as before. I pray that Gustav looses steam
somehow. Hopeing for the best. Any and all prayers are appreciated! Joe

We have to work together to get things back up as soon as possible. Although
it is tracking to south west Lousiana, it is still too far out the detimine

Re: [WISPA] Man fined for stealing WiFi

2007-05-28 Thread Joe Laura
I wonder if they had an acceptance page or not. If the network is wide open
without an acceptance page who says where it is comming from? Around here if
you walk in a coffee shop and seartch usually you can pull up several
networks. I know some coffee shops that ssid is default. I use MT hotspots
at mine and the customers have to at least get a user/pass to use them. A
local coffee shop here recently opened and the reciept had the wep settings
printed on it. They would change keys every week. Customers complained about
having to use keys so after three weeks they just leave it wide open now.

My only question is if we do not know for sure exactly what we need to be

We just picked up a big account here. The owner of a coffee shop chain is

New Orleans, currently, is not using the Earthlink service for thier camera
projects. They do use Tropos nodes, though, but only where needed for
access to the cameras. The Tropos nodes you see with no SSID were part of
the free network the city put up post Katrina. Earthlink has since deployed
in those areas where the network used to operate, so the City is in the
process of removing those nodes from their current locations.

From: "Ralph" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Numbering my responses to Kimo's questions:

1. Right now, a handful of cities (I think they are the 3 Metro-Fi cities in
Silicon Valley, plus Mtn View) are getting 1Mb. This is totally dependent of
the depth of the pockets of Metro-Fi's backers and on the advertising
revenues. Ever play with a puppy in a pet store? They are so cute, you just
have to take it home. If the business model doesn't pay out i.e.: They
don't get enough paying subscribers or they don't get the revenue from the
ads, then you will see it change. Not saying that was Metricom's demise, but
they had few users and any Metro network takes gobs of money to build out.
I've seen it first hand... With this model and with the equipment that will
be used in SF. It ain't free and it ain't cheap!

(kimo)
I agree with you- I think Metro-Fi's model still has yet to be proved a
success. On the other hand ATT is doing Portland Oregon with them so there
may be more developing on this.

2. So Seattle will have it in 10 years. By then, there will be something
bigger and better. Will the SF residents have to wait 10 years too? Not
something I'd be willing to do- especially when I was faced with a proposal
from someone who will do it for free and assume all the risk. What has SF
got to lose?

(kimo)
The EarthLink deal doesn't compare favorably with what other cities are
getting - Why should SF settle? Sf already has more hotspots than any
other city in the nation. It is not hard to find a free hotspot currently.
SF shouldn't lock itself in to what is effectively a 16 year monopoly deal
with tech that is already dated.

3. Milpitas, CA. No tall residential buildings (but some are under
construction. A 24-30 ft high access point with the relatively low gain of
the Tropos antennas will have a good amount of upward radiation. It isn't
that much better of an antenna than a dipole would be. It certainly has
little, if any, directional abilities. It may not go up into a 30 story
hotel or apartment house, but how many residence in SF are in those? That
can easily be the 5 or 10 % allowed not to be covered. Most of my friends
in SF live in 2-4 story abodes. According to the web page, the CPE is given
with a paid connection anyway, so there's no-one not getting one except for
the people taking the freebie. Even if I chose to live in a place that
required use of a CPE, it is no different than buying an XM receiver to
listen to XM, or buying a transistor radio or boom box to listen to free
radio.

(kimo)
Hmm ok, well there are more and more tall residential buildings in SF and
isn't anything over 2 stories already above the 40 ft coverage that
EarthLink is agreeing too? Are you suggesting (I hope it's true) that a CPE
solves all indoor and above 40 ft issues? I thought it was of limited
value?

Yes, Its all in how you present the sales offer weather one looks towards
you as a used car salesman/saleswoman. I constantly tell salesman that if I
would have known they were selling those particular items I would have been
buying them. Then they say "Well you should have asked" Well that's their
job IMO. Not to try to sell me but just inform me of their offerings.

Subject: RE: [WISPA] 900 Mhz Mikrotik SR9 Clients

There's no license fees if you're buying routerboards for Mikrotik.

Also, add 2.4 cards (SR2) and cabling / antenna at each client, and
you've
now built a mesh, so to speak, with coverage off each customer to new
customers.

Those setups add about $200 here and there when you do the repeaters.
But
again,
Alvarion can't touch $500 for 900 CPE and 2.4 AP all on one POE cable.

Subject: RE: [WISPA] 900 Mhz Mikrotik SR9 Clients

It is a fair question and what I would say is that the AU is an even
more
critical point in the network. Our AUs have options to be inserted into
chassis with redundant power supplies, etc. The difference in cost of
the AU
is minimal when working out the entire cost of the sector and its
clients,
especially when working in the OPEX issues.

For example, OPEX aside, let's say you are in the AlvarionCOMNET program
and
buy at the minimum level of 25 CPE, which would get you a $285/CPE cost
with
free shipping. Let's assume all 25 of those attach to a VL sector. In
that
case the sector will cost you about $1900 plus $285 x 25, or $9,025. The
equivalent size network at Mikrotik with the prices in this thread would
be
$348 x 25 + the $500 AU or $9,200 + shipping.
So, not even counting the OPEX issues, reduced truck roll, and shipping
we
are $175 cheaper. Then add in the 1 year free warranty, domestic
support,
FCC legality, and higher equity value of the network. Let's not forget
no
user license fees, no fee for new software upgrades.

Is my math wrong? The business equation seems simple unless I am
seriously
missing something.

Dang, that's as much as $100 more than a real BreezeACCESS CPE (under
the
AlvarionCOMNET program) without needing to piece things together so the
points of failure risk and truck roll is both much smaller, not to
mention a
warranty and domestic supply and support. VL CPE comes with mounting
hardware too and the cable. Our stuff is also all fully FCC legal.

Re: [WISPA] Vonage and Fax

2006-11-08 Thread Joe Laura
We are using an Asterisk solution over canopy and faxing is hit and miss. On
some machines it works fine. Adjusting the baud rate on the machines makes a
big difference on some. Some it does not. I have one client faxing 100% and
another, one hop in closer and they are maybe 25% and using the same exact
machine. Go figure.

Sectors are also great for helping with interference. I guess if your
spectrum is clean and you think it will stay that way then an omni would be
fine.

Re: [WISPA] Initial SR9 test results

2006-10-13 Thread Joe Laura
20mhz channels. No noise in the areas I tested. Im sure downtown will be
different. The mobile end was not mounted. I just had it in my hand stuck
out of the van window. So it was only 4' or so off the ground. A/P is only
90' from the ground. No tilt on the A/P 120* sector. John has specs on his
site for the horizontal 10dbi panel and sector.

2006-10-13 Thread Joe Laura
I did not want to start with an omni because Im sure the noise floor is high
downtown. I figured a sector would be better for initial testing. Tonight
I am going to aim the sector downtown and do some more testing as well as 3
miles out and further. If all goes ok with the existing noise floor I will
order a omni tomorrow. Im only 90' at this point but final testing will be
on one of my 300' pops. Ill post all the results as I get them. Joe

Re: [WISPA] Initial SR9 test results

2006-10-13 Thread Joe Laura
Well, I finally got time to hang the 900 A/P tonight. MT with SR9 on a 532a.
Client is a Rb112. Superpass 10dbi sector and a 10dbi panel for the client.
While its not the golden bullet sorta speak I am very impressed with it.
What better place to test than City Park. Its full of old tall oaks. From
about two miles out I was seeing -75 signal and easily squeezing 2 megs up
and down. I always see a lower upload on other gear but the 900 down and up
always seemed to be almost the same. I have had many calls from a
subdivision that was flooded from the storm and they still do not have bell
or cable in there. I tried doing two houses in that subdivision without any
luck with 2.4. Its loaded with trees. Well from my truck at these two
locations I had no problem seeing a -72 signal. As I got a little closer to
the pop maybe 1 mile I was seeing a -70 with still quite a few trees in the
way and I was seeing four megs up and down This is where it seemed to peak
out at. Like someone said its another tool in the tool box. Its just what I
needed because while 2.4 will burn through some trees the 900m shots will do
so much better.

Re: [WISPA] Legal insight? - OTARD VS Property Managers

2006-10-04 Thread Joe Laura
I did direct tv for years. Still do. You really have to read the rules to do
a install and be sure you are in the clear. For instance, you can not just
bolt a satellite arm on the wall even if it is not a common area. Thats why
you see alot of 5 gallon buckets of concrete with pipes in them. From memory
I do not think you are allowed to drill through the wall either. I used to
use a 6" or so "flat cable" coupler that the window would close on. I would
try to do the install in the late evenings after the managment office closed
and leave a copy of the Otard rule with the tennant with my phone# on the
front of it. Joe

Mike, they can prevent you from roof mounting if it is a multi-tenant,
multi-floor sort of building. If your customer rents a townhouse style,
you should have access. Maybe they can prevent you from holing the roof
itself for under some loop hole that protects them from risks to the
structure, but certainly they could not prevent an eave mount. 100% they
cannot prevent a mount on a subscribers' balcony.

Here is the FCC factsheet on the issue:

When I read the otard rules it seems to me that they CAN stop you from
mounting on the roof. The only place you could mount was tenant
exclusive
areas. Basically the balcony attached to the apartment.

I hope I misread it though.

Marlon,

Just curious, have you ever had to force this issue with property
management? I imagine this could be a difficult fight to win for a
WISP. What happens at the end of the day when the Property Manager
tells the WISP to shove off? Legal action? For what, potential lost
subscribers?

This outta be a fun and interesting thread:

mks: You are one mean drunk, Superman!

As it relates to this space, rate the following 1-10 (1 being high
priority and 10 being "I could care a less") in terms of important if
you could bend the mind of top legal experts to get an opinion. Add
other questions you like answered in your reply.

mks: I guess I'm a bit confused. Those are not really 1 thru 10 type
questions. Those are questions begging answers. I'll try to do both
though.

Comment or add to this list:
- What good is Form 477

mks: It's the ONLY official head count of broadband customers. 1

and do we really need to file it?

mks: Absolutely. Without known customers we have NO value in the food
chain. The more customers we have the more power we have. 1

- Does CALEA affect me?

mks: Still trying to figure that one out. I've got a note in to the
FCC
for some clarification on this issue. 3

How? When? How do I solve it without it costing
an arm and a leg?

mks: Not only that, but it is really any of MY buisiness what my
customers
do on the net? If someone thinks there's a problem with a customer,
come to
me with a search warrent and the needed tools for the search (just like
you
would come to my house) and have fun. No one is going to want
everything they've ever done on the internet saved forever. That's the
kind
of silly crap that the Nazis and Soviets did. Look where it got them.
2

- What's the real risk, if any, of not using certified systems?

mks: Realistically? Little or no risk. Although, under the rules
changes
from 2005 it's pretty hard to be out of certification these days. Power

levels, that's a whole nother issue though. Gotta pay attention to
them! 5

- What does it mean to have a "certified system" in the first place?

mks: It means that ALL of your radio gear, clear down to the cable
level,
has made it past the FCC and is certified to work wit

Ya, Im not feeling to good about this either being so early in the season. I
started last week going back on jobs with non penetrating roof mounts and
guying them to the nearest anchor. Dont want them flying off the roof just
in case. I saw what Katrina did in the east and cinder blocks just did not
hold them down.

We buy several products from them. I have always had good dealings with
them. They seem to always have stock on products and ship when and how they
say.

I have had no problems. I only purchased a few selected panel and grid
antennas but with no issues and products seem to work well.

Can someone give me their honest opinion about doing business with

cable
but I am not sure they are WISP friendly as odd as that seems.

2006-05-14 Thread Joe Laura
Sure would be nice if I could get the City here to backhaul their tropos
units with something other than 5.2/5.8. Im sure something is available for
City use. I did see a new Alvarion flat panel show up last week at a fire
station, no telling what freq though. They were using canopy.

Have you considered the EMP-8602 instead? Cheaper, newer chipset and
supports a, b and g (100mW, 400mW and 400mW). Not used them myself but

So to sum it up IMO physics and limited spectrum makes a muni system
impossible to get the coverage they expect. Dont get me wrong, ups just
dropped off a mag mount friday to me that I am installing on the van
tomorrow. Even if I have to drive 3 blocks or so to connect and pull mail or

Same thing is happening here in New Orleans. I did talk to the city before
it was designed but when I told them that it would be impossible for every
houshold to pop open a laptop in their desired room the door was slammed
shut. They did not want to hear this. I built a small mesh out downtown just
for kicks a couple of years ago. Took my time and designed it the best it
could be. These guys that do not know the technology get this vision to do
whats impossible.

Anyone know anything about Motorola's 802.11 mesh products? Are they
rebranding someone else's gear (as it appears they did with Orthogon)
or building their own? I haven't heard anything about it, but just
found the marketing on my most recent visit to canopywireless.com.

Any success stories with mesh muni wireless yet? I just attended a
'Wireless Wisconsin' conference largely about Milwaukee's project,
which is being done by Midwest Fiber Networks. They've not resolved on
a vendor yet, but claim that they'll build quickly because they will
operate the network independently: they only lease the city's
infrastructure.

Thanks,

I tried to work with the City here but they wanted to do it all themselves.
Well, Im thinking by the progress they have made so far they might have
something worthwhile in the next few years, maybe. It reminds me of when I

You are absolutely right John. I can't list all the cities we are doing
Public Safety projects for right now, but we are starting to light up the
city of Gilroy CA. A lot of dollars are being spent on projects in the name
of Public Safety, especially to allow Emergency Services to be able to
remotely access network resources. The next thing on the radar is providing
Internet access. If the WISP gets there early, he can be a part of the
solution. If the WISP isn't there, the city will go ahead and do it anyway.

Re: [WISPA] Article: Bell South Offers "WiMAX" backup

2006-03-21 Thread Joe Laura
Jonathan, I could have had the Mayor downloading his e-mail with a 45 meg
link in about 20 min if they would have given me access back in the city. I
have always had un limited B/W beaming from a 30 story roof a few blocks
from City Hall as well as many other pops. . All my clients that run on
generator stayed up and running throughout all of the mess with the
exception of a backhaul antenna that got blown off a roof in new orleans
east. . I blame it on the city for not having the proper redundancy in place
but thats just my opinion. You can ask Embassy Suites, Holiday inn select
and all my other clients. They all had communications. When I did finally
sneek in I got CNN and many others data and voip that they desperatly
needed. Well, the whole crew is staying if there is a next time so just give
me a shout down the street and Ill get that E-Mail going for the Mayor . Joe

Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!

2006-01-18 Thread Joe Laura
Mac, Last time I was running Trango (Immediatly following the hurricane) my
clients were dropping like fly's. It was not until I scrambled to get the
Canopy's in the air that I was able to keep all of my commercial clients. I
hate the throughput of Canopy but at the same time I have clients up and
running. My ideal gear would be Trango throughput spec's with GPS Sinc
capability's like the Canopy.

2005-10-25 Thread Joe Laura
Title: Message

Before putting anything on a tower near new orleans
I would suggest you do a site survey first. Unfortunantly, Since the cell guys
came into town 5.7/5.8 does not work anymore. There is a wisp here that has a
meeting with the FCC today here in New Orleans to try to make them take their
36db dishes down and play nice. Everyone wants to shoot 5.8 and it just aint
working no more. 5.8 gear is still up and hopfully it will beable to be used
again cause the 5.2/.3 is extremly crowded as you can imagine. Joe
