More info. Starting gnome using gdm works! This is a much better
alternative than to run gnome-panel in WindowMaker, it was ages since

Followup-For: Bug #507297
The patch to fix bug #507297 appears to have failed. It no longer throws a
fatal exception like it used to, however, it now goes into an infinite loop
simply repeatedly writing to the console:
