There can be no one size fits all ladder line length for a multiband antenna.
Allot of variables come in to play such as other nearby antenna's, trees, power
lines, etc that interact with a multi band antenna in an unpredictable manner.

I'm going to give Feld Hell a try tonight on 160 meters. I will begin
calling CQ on 1807.500 kc +/- QRM beginning at 0100 UTC. There should be
some lightning QRN on the band so it should be a good test of the robustness
of the mode. I suspect that it will hold up a little better than PSK31.

I would recommend the Icom IC-718 as a
mid priced ($550 US) rig for PSK31, etc. A 500 hz or 250 hz CW filter is
optional $$$ wise but the CW filter can be selected for the digital
modes, unlike on the Yaesu FT-840. This rig can also be bought used on eBay in
the $300-400 range.

antenna, either a 1/2 wave dipole or 1/4 wave vertical. Night time D layer

Using the 500/16 submode I had a 45 minute
QSO with KF4MH on 1807.500 kc beginning at 0200 UTC. He was 450 miles away in
Mobile, AL using 50 watts to an inefficient 80 meter dipole. The lightning QRN
was really bad but I had 100% on the station the whole QSO. At times he QSB'ed
down to S/N
