We spent the morning birding Montauk Pt. and environs. Without a doubt, the
highlight was the presence of large numbers of Razorbills flying around the
point. In two hours of observation we recorded some five hundred forty
Razorbills. The movement was widespread, with good numbers of Razorbills
The highlight of birding at Montauk Pt. Thursday morning was the large,
continuing flight of Razorbills. In 2.5 hours of birding at the Point and Camp
Hero State Park we recorded 9,015 Razorbills, the number once again exceeding
the total count of the three scoters and Common Eider at this locat

The Barnacle Goose and two White-fronted Geese were present late this morning
in a large flock (approx. 1500) of Canada Geese in the farm field south of
Sound Ave., and east of Rt. 105, across from Briermere Farms. Barnacle Goose
flew out about fifteen minutes ago and headed west.

Relocated this morning by birders along the bridal path opposite the basketball
courts south of Field 1. Observed on both sides of trail, some patience may be
required as this bird will sometimes skulk. No vocalizations were heard. Other
birds present in good numbers were Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a
Feeding with Glossy Ibis and egrets.

At 9:35AM a near shore dark morph South Polar Skua was observed from RMSP
Field 2. The bird was observed harassing an Osprey (about 2/3 the size of
Osprey) that was carrying a fish before heading East. Decent numbers of Great
Shearwaters as well.

The Common Murre we reported swimming in the ocean Sunday at RMSP was refound
today by Brent Bomkamp. The bird had died and was lying on the beach being
eaten by a Peregrine Falcon. This is the second Murre that we are aware of
(there may be others) that was observed in a weakened condition and
Spinning along western shoreline with ducks in cove at south end of East Pond.

We started the morning sea watching from RMSP. While nothing rare was observed,
we were impressed with the movement of American Pipits (122) flying west down
the beach, and the large numbers of Gannets (+1200) feeding/migrating offshore.
Hearing rumors of Lapland Longspur at West End we proceed
We headed out to Montauk Pt. yesterday morning, hoping that Montauk’s history
of November rarities might still hold true. There was a good number of gulls at
the point, dominated by Laughing Gulls, with Bonaparte’s Gulls mixed in.
Despite extensive searching we could only find a single Parasitic
We started the morning birding the north side of the Point from the restaurant.
There were low numbers of scoters and eiders on the north side but good numbers
of Red-throated Loons and Bonaparte’s Gulls. The highlight of the mornings
birding at Montauk Pt. was a first winter Little Gull feeding
Observed at 9:30AM, between snow squalls, sleeping with Canada Geese at north
end of the lake.

Sue and I spent the morning birding Dune Road in misty and overcast conditions.
We combined our Dune Road trip with a late morning stop at Eastport Pond. There
was not much on the ocean beside flyby Common Eider and scoters. The bays were
virtually devoid of ducks. At Shinnecock the jetty’s were

Tufted Duck was sleeping with a large (900+) mixed scaup flock on Swan Lake in
Patchogue around 12:00PM. Also present were a pair of Wood Duck. This flock was

We headed out east today to bird the Montauk area. We began the day at dawn at
Montauk Pt. where Sue quickly spotted a female King Eider with two Common Eider
in front of the restaurant. Birds were scarce at the Point, with many of the
eider and scoter well offshore. A dismal Razorbill flight (6
Sue and I went in search of the previously reported Red Crossbills at the OBPP
in Commack. It was quickly apparent that we were not the only birders that had
this idea. The birds had been reported on the east side of the preserve earlier
but we did a loop of the overgrown field they had been see

It was a relatively quiet morning at Hempstead Lake State Park this morning,
with a meager ten species of warblers. Highlights were our FOY Magnolia Warbler
and a singing Worm-eating Warbler on the horse trail. Two Solitary Sandpipers
were along the north end of the creek. Two Yellow-billed Cuck
the active Osprey nest
(listen for the racket) on the east side of the main entrance road. The bird
moved frequently, working his way north along the east side of the road toward
the toll booth, finally crossing the road to the west side.

We spent five hours on the flats at Cupsogue yesterday morning, covering both
outgoing and incoming tides. Highlights were seventeen species of shorebirds
including a single Whimbrel and four Pectoral Sandpipers. Terns of interest
were Royal Terns(11), Black Tern (1), Roseate Tern (1) and Forst
This evening at about 7:40 PM we observed, from the Field 7 parking lot, seven
Common Nighthawks flying high over the marsh heading in a northeast direction.
Also present in the small puddle in the Field 7 lot were a Pectoral Sandpiper,
Lesser Yellowlegs (3), and Least Sandpiper (1).

Sue and I spent a pleasant morning birding the East Pond at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge today. Highlights included continuing American Avocet, Caspian
Tern, and Bald Eagle. Other species of note were American Golden Plover(2),
Eurasian Wigeon(1) and American Pipit (5).
The presence of the Bald
Sue and I has a productive few hours shorebirding at HSP this morning,
recording twelve species of shorebirds at the flooded Field 7 parking lot.
Prior to birding Field 7, we observed a Wilson’s Snipe feeding in the puddles
in the Field 6 picnic area with a large contingent of waterfowl that con

I have posted four Corn Crake photos to my flickr site. Sue and I were very
pleased that so many birders got to see this bird. The rarity of this species
is such that, according to Bull’s Birds of New York State (1998), the last

wind, featuring a close-in dark morph Northern Fulmar (which I did not get on),
four adult Black-legged Kittiwakes, three Parasitic Jaegers, twelve Razorbills,

The two previously reported Cattle Egrets were observed this morning at Timber
Pt. Golf Course. Specifically, on the west side of the entrance road near a
house with a large fence around it.

A sea watch from RMSP Field 2 from 7:30AM to 8:30AM this morning yielded five
Cory's Shearwaters and two Wilson's Storm-Petrels. One of the Cory's
Shearwaters was fifty yards from shore, feeding with a group of terns.

We spent a disappointing morning at JBWR this morning, where the water levels
were up in both the East and West Ponds, providing scant habitat for
shorebirds. At the South end of the East Pond there was a young Common Moorhen,
as well as distant views of a Black Tern and the White Pelican at th
. The most common
warbler was American Redstart (14) while Red-breasted Nuthatch (13) numbers at
WE2 continue to increase. No shorebirds of note were found in the swale, but
American Oystercatcher numbers (475) were impressive as well as Western Willet
(32) on the sandbar in the WE2 Marina.

We spent the better part of the morning at WE2 anticipating a good movement on
northwest winds. Upon arriving at WE2 at 6:45AM we noticed the winds appeared
to be W/NW. Nevertheless, birds were moving down the beach, mostly Cedar
Waxwings and Robins. In less than a half hour the winds were comin
of warbler were observed all morning at WE2, today
was a bonanza.
At Heckscher State Park, Sue Feustel found a single Buff-breasted Sandpiper
feeding in the median east of the pool accompanied by ten Killdeer. Warblers
observed were Parula, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, and Am. Redstart.

the median of the parkway road system in the vicinity of Parking Field 8.

flyby Bobolinks, a Cape May Warbler, a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and three
American Golden Plovers in the swale. The plovers flew in about 12:15PM and
stayed about a half hour before flying north.

We birded the barrier beach this morning , observing a fair movement of birds
dominated by Yellow-rumped Warblers, Golden-crowned Kinglets, and
White-throated and Song Sparrows. We had a Lincoln's Sparrow at the northwest
corner of Robert Moses State Park Field 2, a flyby Pine Siskin, and a Blue

This morning at RMSP Field 2 a diverse group of migrants were moving down the

WE2 Marina along with three Western Willets and twenty-five Red Knots. On the
ocean south of the swale the calm winds resulted in excellent viewing

passerines down the beach this morning. We counted birds from the west end of
parking field 2 from 7:45AM to 9:00AM. Birds continued to migrate down the
beach after we stopped counting and were still moving by late in the m
