I have noticed the following problem for quite some time (years) in

If you insert and EPS figure into a drawing or presentation document and

No, I don't have the proposed repository activated. But I recently (~a
week or two ago) reconfigured X so that I could switch between laptop
LCD and external monitor (see bug #247342). Perhaps I never noticed the
problem before this or something I did related to monitor switching

Hi,
Since the last set of hardy updates on 7/16/2008 or 7/17/2008, X is
doing funny things - strange lines appear in the background and windows

I followed the suggestions of bug #238215 and manually edited xorg.conf
to add a subsection "Display" with Virtual directive. This allowed me
to dual head.

Reconfiguring the X server worked. Thanks very much for your help - I
have had this problem for a long time, but never had the time to submit
a bug report. This will make my life much easier.
One comment though: I am seeing the same problem as bug #238215 - I am
only allowed to "clone screens",

OK, I have sort of found the problem, but things are still strange. The
initial nothingness was due to the firewal ufw. I tried allowing
connections to ports 137-139, but that didn't help. Disabling
completely the firewall let me browse windows networks. Are there a
particular set of ports that
