I have one answer and I've seen it before : Big ego's and short sightedness. there another answer, and it's probably an even more siniter one: they're going after a target audience that they know will not only not care about the carl situation, but will never even hear about it. given the number and placement of advertisements for this year's festival, i think it's safe to say that they have their sights set on a much bigger fish than the techno scene, or even the serious dance music/electronic music community as a whole. i can pretty much guarantee that the vast majority of people who hear about this on mtv, fox or (for chicago people) q101, b96 and gci, have never heard of carl craig and will never know how things went down between the organizers. how much do you know about the beginnings of and the relationships between the people who organized lollapalooza, for example? i'm not blaming any individuals for this, and i don't know much about the way the festival was/is/will be run... but i can pretty much guarantee that to whatever extent large corporate interests (read: ford and others) have an interest this, that is the degree to which they will seek to appeal to the largest and richest possible audience, even to the direct disenfranchisement of the actual music community. m -- matt hellige [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://matt.immute.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Notably, two of their sponsors are Miller Lite and Jim Beam, with Nextel being the closest thing to a corporate giant. South By Southwest is pretty unique in every respect though. __ Couple of items i am excited to be listening to recently are Marumari's new Supermogadon on Carpark records set for release towards the end of June. This one surpasses Wolves.. in style and finesse, and simply takes the spot for the most creative, lively and funky 45-min affair for Marumari --tracks like indigo florist take you bake to 70s funk/disco!. This one has been inconstant rotation on the player, as it spans many genre's that slightly touch upon Wolves.. but entirely redefines it. Confusing, i know. But this one is a gem. [313] this little fdemf C2 thingy...
I have to admit, I am truly baffled by something, and I am thinking and speaking in the mind of an entertainment business owner... Why, on earth, would a major company, fire the head guy, a notorious artist no less, 2 weeks prior to the event? That makes no sense at all. If I were planning an aggressive take-over and re-shaping of a company, the *last* thing that would enter my head would to be to create mass controversy. If I were that aggressive, I would simply wait till after the event. And if I was shady, I would realize that waiting would most likely provide greater potential to pass the blame, or to create some fault, and the level of controversy would be at its lowest after an event It just seems odd. darw_n... ... :i: explore. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Is there any 313 inspired Club Nights in Singapore?
I think people are sleeping on a lot of the electronic music coming from the east these days. AI and Involve have both put out some great music that is largely ignored in Detroit. The East? Hmm... I'm from Wellington, New Zealand, hometown of Involve, and I've never heard of us referred to as The East before. Hope this doesn't that mean that George W. thinks we're down with the Chinese? We'll go with The South or something from now on, huh? ;) Involve has a busy release schedule this fall, look for new vinyl by Losoul(of playhouse fame,) Signer, ISOL and Jet Jaguar. They played a lot of the stuff that will be coming out, it is tight. You sure about that Losoul? That'd be great! I know they've just lined up an indie act called Slow Moe (you can find him on mp3.com), and may well be shifting more in that direction... The new Aspen and Jet Jaguar albums are both great and almost out. Apparently those 12s have been held up due to EMI's vinyl pressing plant (I'm guessing in the UK) being closed down. Anyone know about this? anyway, buy their records. Amen. www.involverecords.com Andy - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

One standard outdoor light should work fine. Thing is you have to make sure its placed directly over the screen to get a nice clean burn. [313] demf faq
Hi, I have the first version on the DEMF FAQ(or help document or whatever.) I had originally planned to post it to the lists. By the time I put the different pieces together it was longer than 32 pages, and there are still another 10 pages I would like to add. This version will be the raw dog and a larger version will be out sometime next week. I would like to add a bit of city history, a larger restaurant guide, and some commentary on the hijacking of the festival. I have to say that it is awesome, and even locals should go out of their way to get a copy. Kelli Kavanaugh wrote a series of great articles about shopping, architecture, and getting around in the city. Carissa Tintinalli from the Detroit Family list contributed what I believe to be the most comprehensive listing of what is going on DEMF weekend. A .rtf version of the document should be on the hyperreal server sometime tomorrow afternoon, html should be available early next week. When it is up and running I will post an URL to the lists. [313] DEMF Carl Craig Drama.....
313ers, Please keep in mind that Pop Culture Media has owned the DEMF Festival from day one. Carl Craig was only the face/name used to draw acts and underground patrons to the festival. Obviously Craig never had any power beyond that which the city of Detroit and Pop Culture allowed him to have. I am very dissapointed in Carl's dismissal but i'm sure that he wasn't naive enough to think that this could never happen. Detroit has been robbed, raped and pillaged so many times before that those looking to Broaden(exploit) Detroit techno's visability are always suspect in my eyes until they prove otherwise. This whole situation is not about Carl Craig or Carol Marvin. It is about Detroit Electronic Music. The rest is a soap opera with a cast chock full of people who cannot or will not represent DETROIT properly(Carl and Carol included) only their company, IMAGE, label or whatever seems to be the priority. Soap OperaQuestion: Why is it that the drama involving the festivals directors is more prevalent(front page) than the line-up, artists, djs and oh yeah.THE MUSIC! Sorry but all are to blame(including those acting out without the facts: Free Press must be 100% accurate i guess?) for this black eye on the face of Detroit!! Re: [313] miss information
Wendy knows already. This is our brief conversation: Alex wrote: While many of the pioneers of electronic music -- *traditionally made by DJs with turntables instead of bands with instruments* -- are from Detroit, most of them had to go to Europe to become major stars. This statement is incorrect and is the second time I have seen it used in your stories. Instruments are used (not necessarily bands). Turntables are used by DJ's to PLAY the music. The instruments that are used to PRODUCE electronics are synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and sequencers. Computers are also prevalent in the production of electronic music. While many pioneers of the car industry -- traditionally made by race car drivers instead of engineers and designers -- are from Detroit, most of them had to go to Europe to become major stars. See my point...? Wendy wrote: I understand Alex. Unfortunately, the people who insist on putting this stuff into my stories only have a cursory knowledge and can only allow for a sentence-long description. What they are TRYING to say is that many of these people PERFORM w/ turntables instead of a band/guitar/live drummer/etc. I thank you for your message though, and thanks for reading. -W This is something to think about...there is no telling what relevant detail gets cut by a reporter's superiors. ani [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: 313 313@hyperreal.org me.com cc: Subject: [313] miss information 05/16/01 10:45 AM from today's detroit news article While many of the pioneers of electronic music -- traditionally made by DJs with turntables instead of bands with instruments... wow, i guess i can get rid of that confusing reason software and just use my tables... ani - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == The information in this Internet e-mail is confidential, may be legally privileged and is intended solely for the addressee. [313] another Carl Craig article
On the FRONT PAGE of the Detroit News today: http://www.detroitnews.com/2001/entertainment/0105/16/a01-224860.htm I think that action is necessary. Nothing too militant, or extreeme, but i think that we need to show pop culture media, that we want Carl Craig to stay. The email and phone numbers have been posted (what the hell, I'll post it again: email- [EMAIL PROTECTED] phone: 313.392.9200). Tell them that you are upset. Furthermore, I totally thinks that the tshirt idea is awesome. Carol Marvin is a bitch might be extreeme, but I'm thinking something like No Carl = No DEMF or Keep Carl or whatever. I think signs are a good idea too. Especially when Marvin goes on stage to give little speeches between sets. Think about it, every time Carol Marvin pops her head out on stage to give some pep talk, wouldnt it be great if people started booing her, or chanting in support of carl? That would give her the right message. Seeing as how just about every news souce that has run this story has been either in support of Craig or at least neutral, I think that if we are vocal enough, we will see change. -- Christos Michalakis President Hellenic Students Association a: 701 E. Re: [313] another Carl Craig article
i just wrote a really nice letter to Pop Culture Media explaining basically how i feel regarding the entire situation of them firing carl craig. i hope that others will follow suit. basically, what i told them was that i feel their decision to ask carl craig to step down from the position of the creative director was untimely, unwarranted, greed-driven and short-sighted. i also stated that i think my presence this year at demf will be a reflection of my support for mr. craig and in protest of all that ms. marvin has tried to turn this festival into. undoubtedly, i feel that whoever she tries to have fill the position next year should pretty much be unsupported as they should be fully aware of the situation with carl craig and why they needn't be involved with PCM. i told them also that i pretty much am 110% behind carl craig. no expletives, no attacks really...just expressing the gist of how i feel about it right now. :P i don't care if DEMF this year is going to be FUN or whatever. granted, i know that the music will be wonderful per usual, but the ideology behind it has changed so drastically that i cannot support pop culture media. hence why i will not spend my money in the festival. i'm going elsewhere to eat, will not buy concessions, and will not buy any propaganda (tshirts, posters) with the festival name, as it will go straight into the pockets of ms. marvin and her cronies. :P okay...that's probably enough to annoy all of you adamant music posts only people on the list. :) thanks and drive through... ciao. lauryn. -- ** nothing is an end because it can always be used as a basis for something new and different. -keith haring ** [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ** -- - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] All Music Guide to Electronica
I think it's been mentioned here a few times in the past, but after four years of working and waiting, we're finally ready to publish the All Music Guide to Electronic(a). Anyone who's spent time on the allmusic.com site knows we take care of a *lot* of records (plus a lot of Detroit records) and this book is no different -- 1,200 artists, 5,000 releases, dozens of essays and label/style descriptions, plus book reviews, etc. Amazon.com has a publishing date of May 18 (this Friday), though I'm not sure the major bookstores will have copies before the festival. What I do know is we'll have a table set up with books for sale at the Record Time in Roseville next Friday (May 25 - mid-to-late afternoon). Of course we'll be selling copies from our booth at DEMF as well -- they're $20 each, which is $5 off the normal price. We'll have plenty of artists coming by, plus a few surprise guests. No pressure to spend money, but Diana and I (and maybe Rob) and all the other AMG brethren would love to see as many people stop by as can make it... .john. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
