Re: (313) laura gavoor et al

2002-10-04 Thread Cornelius Harris
I guess some of my writer/promotions background makes folks think that I'll
always have something to say. And then there's the line of thinking that
says, if it's already been said, if you have nothing new to contribute, keep
your mouth shut. The other week I was at James Stinson's funeral (Drexciya)
and now this. So I'm shell shocked. All of you have spoken well to her
memory and I really don't think I have anything I can add that will do any
more to communicate what a truly inspirational woman she was, faults and
all. In fact, her faults were some of the things that endured me to her.
Laura would say things that others might be thinking, but wouldn't. She
once said something to me about a situation where she, in her words, put my
foot in my mouth. I told her, Naw, everyone else was thinking it, you
were just the only one who wasn't scared to open your mouth and be honest
about how you felt. She was human. She was openly human. You didn't
spend a lot of time trying to figure out, What does she mean? Good or
bad, she'd let you know. So I came to respect this woman, long before I got
to know her well enough to say that I truly loved her as a person.

I called her, not too long ago, because I wanted to know how she was doing,
what was going on with her. I'm thinking, it's so cool to be talking to
this woman, not for business (though we HAD to talk about the business),
but honestly, for the pleasure of it. And she thanked me. And I don't know
how other folks interacted with her, but as much as I was inspired by her,
she made me feel like I was doing something for her just by calling and
BSing on the phone. And (and I know this will sound silly), that was my
dance partner (yeah, I know, I'm not alone). I could count on her to not
stand on the wall, no question. I am going to miss her on so many levels...

Actually, the second Surveillance seems to be a UK Surveillance that had
their stuff mastered at NSC, the DFA Surveillance is one of those been
around, but you never heard of them till recently type of deals. UR,

TC I picked up a great 12 in Rubadub yesterday by DFA (Deterministic
Finite
Automata), snappily titled 'Microstructural Chracterization' on
Surveillance
Recordings from Detroit. 3 tracks of minimal but extremely soulful and
melodic electronic house/techno, very very nice indeed. Just wondering
if
anyone had any more info on DFA or the Surveillance label, and if
there's

any other recommended material worth checking out?

Hey Tom,

If you recall I put it in my top 10 for 2001...can't say as I know anything
about the artist or label though...

TC Their website (http://www.surveillancerecordings.com/) looks great but
 there's no actual content...

I found http://www.surveillance.net doing a quick search but that is
another

label altogether...though also from Detroit, and also techno. Seems
strange that there are two Techno labels in the same city with the same
name!

Lemme know if you find out anything! It would be nice if someone could
shed

some light on the subject.

Ohhh and for something in a similar vein you should check out AJ Hunter's
Pressure Point EP on Parotic Music, track it down and you'll find it's
well

worth the effort... It's probably the most interesting record I bought all
of last year, seriously deep Techno/House with a Chicago feel and
intriguing programming - the record has such a beautifully textured sound
to

it (if that makes any sense;-)

Cheers,

m*

2001-03-28 Thread Cornelius Harris

From: Nick Walsh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yup yup, I can tell you from a very reliable source
that HDNone is talking a load of pap. I also know a
few dj's that are gonna be there but the line ups may
change, it's still being organised, so there's no room
for speculation. Things will be clearer soon, there's
no point wasting bandwidth now when the full details
will be displayed way before the event anyway...

Sorry to jump in on this, but no, HDNone is NOT simply talking junk. I
think his/her announcement was premature given the situation, but I can
vouch for the fact that this was a line up that was mentioned by individuals
involved in organizing the event in private conversations with other folks.
This was presented as a done deal, and I know that at least one of the
people mentioned has been talking about it to others, whether or not it's
been mentioned publicly.

I've been given a number of different reasons for why things were said and
why things were retracted and why other folks are not going to move on their
decisions and none of it is making too much sense to me. The press
conference may be interesting for a number of different reasons, but to go
to it and expect to hear anything definitive is...chancey at best. Even
when someone says, Yes, this is how it's going to be, you find out three
days later, Oh, X didn't have the authority to say that, and we changed
it.

I have a lot more to say, but I'm also going to give the organizers a chance
to come up with their story before I open up on folks.

Out of curiosity, what else has Taborn done outside of IO, and does he
have any releases. I have to say that his playing on the At Les remake

months. What I would give to be able to play half as well as he can. :)

Right and wrong. It *was* a group prior to UR, but it swiftly changed to a
four man vocal house group that in many ways mirrored the Temptations (Banks

I'm not exactly sure what the gentleman's name is (so I won't make a
halfways attempt), but he read a couple of his poems with conga
accompaniment (not sure about the musician's name either, but the conga guy
was on various stages with people like Stacey Hale and Derrick May) on
Monday. He also did a reading during May's set with a thumping beat rolling
in the background. Pretty interesting if you were paying attention. I'm not
sure the crowd necessarily was into it, but I definitely paid attention to
the message. One poem was about Niggers Afraid Revolution or something
like that. Reminiscent of Beat poetry.

Anyone have more details on this? He seemed to be well respected by
Derrick, Carl, and others, calling him the last true poet. I'll try and
find out more.

Re: (313) movies that were filmed in Tha D

2000-04-16 Thread Cornelius Harris

Michael Rappaport reminded me.

Zebrahead, if you come across it, was done here. I actually auditioned
for it but lost out due to not having any proper representation (ie, an
agent). Which wasn't so bad because by the time the film finished, my
character just stood around and grinned. The character's name, which,
unfortunately, didn't change, was Nut(?!)

Then there was that Danny DeVito flick where he teaches some army guys
Hamlet. It had one name in the theaters and a different one on video and I
can't remember either one. In fact, DeVito seems to do a lot of film stuff
in Detroit. I remember when everyone was fighting over who controlled the
Hudson's Building he was filming down there late one night (real, real
late). I didn't see DeVito, who was producing or something, but I saw
Dabney Coleman (is that his name) and, I think, Bonnie Bedelia. They were
supposed to be some kind of couple or something (can you tell I never saw
the completed film?).

And how can folks forget Martin which was shot in a studio, but set in
Detroit and took place in the apartments on Jefferson (yeah, I forgot that
name, too, but you always saw them during the 'transitions').

Last, but not least, I gotta put in a vote for Aaliyah, whose film wasn't
shot here, but I'm telling ya, one look and I'm like, Ah! Detroit!

Re: (313) Rave Barbie and DJ Ken (Long)

2000-04-16 Thread Cornelius Harris
I do think people look at the 'old days' with rose coloured specs. As I
recall it has always been the case that there were people on the scene who
were only in it for the most superficial reasons and who knew nothing about
the music, from 1988 (when I first discovered the music) right through 'til
now.

No, because they stood out. House, techno, and hip hop all came up around
the same time in the early 80's. At the time, hip hop was the cool
underground thing and there were all the Break dance in 15 Minutes tapes
and everything. But folks generally ignored them. We all knew that
Breakin' was a Hollywood vision and never took it to be anything more than
that (nice soundtrack, though). Whenever anything is underground there
will be folks looking to exploit it or folks who have no clue beyond someone
told them that it was cool. It's a trend. And when the trend shifts, so
will these folks.

The problem comes in when you have a trendy mass that causes the other
folks to stop coming out. I'm going to get personal and target the ghetto
raves that some seem to enjoy around Detroit (and, if my sources are
correct, this happens elsewhere, though maybe not to our extreme). You've
got (still) this moneyed suburban white young crowd coming into a broke
assed ethnic neighborhood (sometimes in the middle of gang territory??!!!?!)
paying $30 so they can enjoy some event that the people who live there can't
afford to attend. AND THE PROMOTERS, ATTENDEES, DJS, WHOMEVER, JUST DON'T
GIVE A FUCK??!!? And this lack of respect eventually makes it's way to the
DJ because who the hell cares about the DJ as long as someone's playing
Music To Get High By by Artist of the Month. And everyone's running
around so friggin' happy you think, Hmmm, could it be...THE DRUGS!!!???
Then some locals decide, Fuck it, everyone's so friggin happy to be in the
hood, let's party! and they start robbing the poor confused bunny rabbits.
Yeah, a lot of you around Detroit know where I'm talking about, I used to
live there, myself, even had some events there, but NO FRIGGIN BODY WAS
ROBBED.

And for some who used to enjoy going out, the prospect of spending a night
with a bunch of suburban addicts is less than appealing, so they stay away.
And the promoters like it like that. I remember hearing (at the last
second) about a well known Latino DJ/producer who was playing at some rave
here. My guy, Mark Flash (who had also heard about it last minute), hooked
up with him at the event. The question that got posed to Flash was, Hey
man, I thought there were black and Latinos in Detroit? You see, this rave
promoter either A) had no clue that black and Latino music lovers were huge
fans of this man and his work, which was why s/he/they didn't bother to have
info in those areas, or B) had a clue but didn't care = NO RESPECT FOR THE
DJ OR HIS FANS. This is noticed not only by black and Latino fans, but
white ones as well, who question what is PLUR when there is no UR (heh, and
that was not an intentional pun, but what the hell).

It's not what you do, but how you do it. If you want to dress weird, cool.
You may set a new trend. If you dance crazy, so be it. Drugs have been
around for long before this, but we've also witnessed the drugs destroy a
number of our greatest musical heros of all genres. We should have learned
something. Still, folks are gonna do what they're gonna do. But RESPECT
where you are, the people you're around, your DJ, all of it. Be yourself,
but have some common sense and respect.

For whatever reason the record seems not to have been restocked - this is a

Re: Sv: (313) I Am AfroGermanic!!!

2000-03-09 Thread Cornelius Harris

OK I actually got off my ass and checked, and it was UR 47 (Vintage Future)
that I was thinking of and it was Mark Taylor not Marc Floyd. That makes
more

sense.

Oh, yeah, Mark Taylor! Now THAT'S a diverse cat! Anybody remember Mark
Morrison? Check the credits for Taylor's work. In fact, he's done a lot of
tracks for British RB folks in addition to his electro and bass tracks,
amongst other stylings. Hell, if we're talking about Marks, anyone remember
Marc Pharaoh? Donnie Marks? In fact, I'm thinking about starting a
Michigan Marks webpage.

Re: (313) Errol Flynn/schoolcraft/jit

2000-02-23 Thread Cornelius Harris
Funny, I remember as a kid hearing about someone getting in trouble for
shouting Errol Flynn and all and I thought how come he's in trouble for
talking about an actor??? Of course, this was years ago...around the time
of the dinosaurs...I got educated quickly!!

 Jit jit jit

this is the newest danceabout 5-7 years old maybe? fancy foot work.
a little like the moves b-boys would do before they spun on their

  Smurf ... Smurf

older. 16 years at least. this had a couple of variants (the california
and german smurf come to mind). the original was done by shuffling the
instep of one's feet inward, while raising one's arms. (you'd have to see
it...)

  Errol Flynn Errol Flynn

THE oldest. 25 years at least. originated on the east side of the city.
the myth was--i'm too young to know for sure--that if you did this in some
places you'd get beat down. done by stiffening your hands as if they were

Harder to define...and has a couple of variants too. you jump in place
kinda, and kick your feet out. this one is a bit younger than the smurf.

This is getting good. Does anybody know if Sony is hosting a party at WMC?

Might be worth the conference pass price just to walk in wearing a t-shirt
that says, Sony stole my track too.

The mind wanders...

Re: (313) UR vs. BMG/Ariola

2000-01-11 Thread Cornelius Harris

Yes, it's true. My original statement was...

Folks, things are not what they seem. Then again, they are. Dirk commented
about other folks coming to milk the cashcow or some other crap like that.
He wasn't joking. He was telling us about how he would set us up. This
is all rumor, so I'll need a minute to get this all straight, but the word
is that the two individuals responsible for the creation of this rip off
track are now moving from Sony to BMG. I don't think I have to tell you the
odds for BMG putting this track on the guys' debut release as a legitimate
cover. His response was meant to give the impression they were backing
down so that folks would ease up on them. Media would say, hey, it's over,
no need to write about this, angry fans would rejoice and stop bothering
them, and so on. Many of you went for it. Many did not. Bottom line is,
this is not over. I'm preparing a more direct statement to Dreyer and
others, but Sony has made their intentions clear by being absolutely silent.
Even allies at Sony Japan are now refusing to communicate with us.
Whatever hope of any positive outcome with Sony has been destroyed. They're
fucking laughing at us. I don't think it's very funny.

...since then, I recieved this (edited by me)...

In the new german dance charts the Jaguar is on #4 with the label BMG no
longer Sony ! BMG make a deal with the coverversion producers after Sony has
cancelld the record. They will do more club and radiopromotion and
advertising and give a videoclip to Viva Television. Sony send out a
statement to the press and the promotion company Public Propaganda DJs
before christmas telling the story. It is printed in Raveline. contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

...I have no doubt that Dreyer was paid nicely for the track. There's no
way BMG could get it without Sony's approval (good Lord, what am I
saying?!?), uh, yeah, anyways, you can't tell me BMG did this without Sony's
involvement. Other parts are making more sense to me. The producers of
this track are from Cologne. Wouldn't you know, Dreyer is a DJ(?!?!) at a
club there. (Too incredible to believe? Check out
http://www.f-t-w.com/dj2.htm for some confirmation)

It just kills me because these majors are basically uniting, saying, we can
all gang up on you, so the hell what. I'm trying to hook up with folks
beyond the techno community on this because, hell, I figure, there's a lot
of us, too. Some folks thought I was being reactionary, but look at what is
happening. I think if anyone thinks that this stops with UR, you're
deluding yourself. It's kind of funny. The underground, being what it is,
can be eliminated and who is going to notice? Independent labels will
suffer and may die out, fans will sit at home bored, but the machine will
roll on and...I like to think that...I'm a little too stressed and pissed
to continue. You all know where I was going with this.

Not having much peace,
Cornelius

Thanks for your email. Please be advised that reacting to statements like
yours
we have cancelled the release of the coverversion. Meanwhile the producers
of

the remake have signed a deal with BMG / Ariola. They will release it on
CD maxi
