Re: [AI] how to crop the photo with jaws?

2013-03-21 Thread Uma phago
Raju I was giving ways on how to resize an image for online
application purpose. If you want to crop a freshly scanned image then
scan it as a pdf file and select the image on the pdf file and copy to
clipboard.(remember ctrl + c will not work in this case you have to
use the application menu). Open paint and paste from clipboard a clean
cropped image and save as jpeg. Guess I'm clear enough.

[AI] New coins leave visually challenged in a spin

2013-03-21 Thread avinash shahi
S M Arun, TNN | Mar 21, 2013
COIMBATORE: The new series of 50 paise, 1 rupee, 2 rupee and 5 rupee
coins launched in July 2011 have left blind people across the country
in a spin. They say the new coins (introduced with the new rupee
symbol) are so indistinct from each other that differentiating between
them is a task. The shape and size of all these coins seems almost
similar. So we are unable to differentiate it from size, A David
Vincent, a visually-challenged youth told TOI.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/New-coins-leave-visually-challenged-in-a-spin/articleshow/19100562.cms
He said without help of others it is hard to differentiate between
various denominations. Though blind, people like Vincent say the
unique wavy rim of old 2 rupee coins and the rims of Rs 5 and the Re 1
coins were so distinct that these almost worked like braille for them
and helped them identify the denomination. The new series of coins
have reduced the unique design of all these coins to a standard circle
making our day-to-day life difficult, he said.

The Re 1 coin with the thumbs-up sign and cross sign and the Rs 2 coin
with the 'V' sign and cross sign that were circulated before 2011 too
were not blind friendly. There is also a criticism that the Re 1 and
Rs 2 coins have undergone three changes in a short period making the
life of visually-impaired miserable. Both the new Re 1 coin and the
old 50p coin that are similar in shape and size are in circulation
adding to the confusion, S Chezhiyan, a visually-impaired activist
said.

The demand for bringing out blind-friendly coins preferably using
braille method is increasingly being made after the circulation of
these new series of coins. We have made repeated representations to
the government and also to the Reserve Bank of India but there has
been no response, says M Kamaraj, a differently-abled activist said.

According to him, even people with normal eyesight are checking the
new series of coins more than twice to confirm the denominations as
they are not noticeably different.

opens in standard view itself. As I already mentioned, I'm not able to
set it as default view. This is the problem.

[AI] New coins leave visually challenged in a spinunfortunately, in this

Subject: [AI] Inclusive mainstream schools in Hyderabad

Hi,

This, I guess will be more relevant to the members from Hyderabad. Do we
have mainstream schools like the Delhi Public School in Hyderabad giving the
blind and visually impaired an inclusive environment like their counterparts
in Delhi? Or, are there any other schools which willingly take in children
with the said problems into their regular school environment?

I ask this as I am unaware of any and need help for a child with low vision
to be included in one such school. Niraj Public School has a section for
children with special needs, but I don't think they have any visually
impaired children there.

Any suggestions and help with information is appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: [AI] New coins leave visually challenged in a spin

 S M Arun, TNN | Mar 21, 2013
COIMBATORE: The new series of 50 paise, 1 rupee, 2 rupee and 5 rupee coins
launched in July 2011 have left blind people across the country in a spin.
They say the new coins (introduced with the new rupee
symbol) are so indistinct from each other that differentiating between them
is a task. The shape and size of all these coins seems almost similar. So
we are unable to differentiate it from size, A David Vincent, a
 visually-challenged youth told TOI.

 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/New-coins-leave-visually
 -challenged-in-a-spin/articleshow/19100562.cms
He said without help of others it is hard to differentiate between various
denominations. Though blind, people like Vincent say the unique wavy rim of
old 2 rupee coins and the rims of Rs 5 and the Re 1 coins were so distinct
that these almost worked like braille for them and helped them identify the
denomination. The new series of coins have reduced the unique design of
all these coins to a standard circle making our day-to-day life difficult,
 he said.

The Re 1 coin with the thumbs-up sign and cross sign and the Rs 2 coin with
the 'V' sign and cross sign that were circulated before 2011 too were not
blind friendly. There is also a criticism that the Re 1 and Rs 2 coins have
undergone three changes in a short period making the life of
visually-impaired miserable. Both the new Re 1 coin and the old 50p coin
that are similar in shape and size are in circulation adding to the
 confusion, S Chezhiyan, a visually-impaired activist said.

The demand for bringing out blind-friendly coins preferably using braille
method is increasingly being made after the circulation of these new series
of coins. We have made repeated representations to the government and also
to the Reserve Bank of India but there has been no response, says M
 Kamaraj, a differently-abled activist said.

According to him, even people with normal eyesight are checking the new
series of coins more than twice to confirm the denominations as they are
 not noticeably different.

[AI] are we note human beings? A horrible experience i had.

2013-03-21 Thread habeeb. c
Hello friends,
Though with a note of pessimism, i think that sharing with you this
particular experience of mine can be a real thought provoking instance
for you. Please give me your feedback on what i had done.
We had the election to our university senate on 15-3-2013 Friday. The
day before the election, when i was just going through the elections
rules, something very striking caught my attention. It was written
that for a candidate with any kind of infirmity such as visual
impairment, The voting shall be done by the presiding officer or a
deputy of him. Can you ever imagine such a close existing any where in
the world. The secrecy of the election is a mandatory condition in any
democratic set up. How can they insist that i shall exercise my right
to vote with the help of a person appointed by them, rather i have the
autonomy to decide my scribe for voting. See that all these are
happening in a country where powerful laws for the preservation and
protection of the differently abled in all walks of their life are
existing.
As i could not tolerate this, Even though at the eleventh hour, i met
the University registrar and explained him the situation. Initially he
was not even ready to listen to me. After a very prolonged debate, He
issued a direction to my principle the presiding officer, That the
registrar in his capacity of the returning officer of the election,
directs the principle to give me absolute freedom to use any person
for voting in the senate election. I'm a very active political worker
in my institution. I met the principle the day before the election
with the order, and he told me that i can do as directed by the
returning officer.
Things are more interesting when i went to vote. The principle told me
that he could not implement the registrar's order as the opposite
political group challenged it saying that it does not agree with the
rules in the statute, Where the close is that the challenged person's
vote can be done either by the returning officer or his deputy that is
the presiding officer. I resisted it by saying that i have the support
of the order of Registrar. ON calling him on the phone, The registrar
told the principle that against what had really happened between us,
he hadn't issued the order on account of my legitimate feelings. He
thought that being a visually challenged i would not be opposed by the
other people, so he had given me the order as a charity. I put three
conditions in front of the principle.
1. He must allow me to use my choice for voting. He told me that being
opposed by the other group, and not being in the statute, he couldn't
do so.
2. I can use the principle's help for voting, provided he gives me in
writing why he doesn't allow me to use my choice. He was not ready to
do so, as the registrar had already instructed him that he should not
do so, as there was some objection. The registrar had not canceled his
order.
3. This being the situation, i'm not voting in the election and i'm
going to give a complaint to the disability commissioner that i'm not
allowed to use my right to enfranchisement in the senate election. At
last he told me that he would try to make negotiations with the rival
groups.
After coming out, i explained the situation to all my colleagues on
both the sides. On realizing that if my right to vote is denied, and
if i approach the disability commissioner, anything is possible
including the canceling of election, some of the opposite group
members have persuaded the others to call of their threat. Probably
being frightened by the possibility of another election and disturbed
by social censorship, they at last told the principle that i could use
anyone of my choice. As the principle told me this, his interpretation
was that they were giving me that on some humanitarian grounds,. Being
compelled by various circumstances, i could not tell him that what he
suggested was wrong.
After all these years, if this is the attitude of an academic
community on the question of dignity of a visually challenged person,
what next.
I have already taken adequate steps to amend the statutes in the near future.
regards

Salute to you Mr Habeeb.
There is an old saying goes: rights are not granted, they are snatched.
And you did it.
Ballat is a bullet Which is the essence of all electoral democracies..
What if there had been another person, who would have not known, about
CCPD? voting as a Constitutional right?
Your experience is an eye-opener indeed. Of course not conventional
eyes, but in terms of spirit and motivation..

Re: [AI] about accessibility of gsm data card.

2013-03-21 Thread Vikas Kapoor
I'd request each one on this list not to generalise the issue of
accessibility of certain data cards in accordance with the brand name. I can
furnish many examples where certain versions of some brands are accessible
but the higher versions of the same brands are not really accessible.
I myself can claim that the data card of iBall brand that I'm having is not
only accessible in terms of connecting and disconnecting the internet, but
also accessible completely even with respect to making and receiving calls,
sending and receiving text messages along with executing the USSD commands.
When I suggested the same to one of my friends to get hold of the same data
card, he bought it and found to be completely inaccessible, the difference
was in terms of their versions. the iBall data card that I'm having, and
found to be accessible is version 2.0 and the same brand data card that the
person cited above, was provided is with version 3.0.
So in conclusion I'd say, accessibility should not be quoted mere on the
basis of the brand names.

[AI] My posts have been deleted from FB by the Government what to do?

2013-03-21 Thread avinash shahi
Friends
Is there anyway to regain deleted post on FB?
Is FB private sphere?
I was having a very constructive textual talk on the issue of consentual sex.
And discussing that consent should be of which kind Written or Verbal?
and how it can be produce in Courts?
But that post has been deleted by the survelance body.
Because, we were extracting a meaning , that couples can keep their
data safe and count them towards their sunset days.

Re: [AI] are we note human beings? A horrible experience i had.

2013-03-21 Thread Rahul Bajaj
I'm glad you fought for your right..
For a visually impaired person, self advocacy is an indispensable quality..
The situation on the ground is very different from what we read in theory. The
sad thing, though, is that most people are not as forthcoming as you were in
this case and silently allow such infringements of their basic rights to take
place..
I don't mean to suggest that we should be needlessly argumentative because I
have come across people on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to
reasonable accommodation, but we must fight for our rights in such situations.

They say the new coins (introduced with the new rupee
symbol) are so indistinct from each other that differentiating between
them

is a task. The shape and size of all these coins seems almost similar. So
we are unable to differentiate it from size, A David Vincent, a
visually-challenged youth told TOI.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/New-coins-leave-visually
-challenged-in-a-spin/articleshow/19100562.cms
He said without help of others it is hard to differentiate between various
denominations. Though blind, people like Vincent say the unique wavy rim
of

old 2 rupee coins and the rims of Rs 5 and the Re 1 coins were so distinct
that these almost worked like braille for them and helped them identify
the

denomination. The new series of coins have reduced the unique design of
all these coins to a standard circle making our day-to-day life
difficult,

he said.

The Re 1 coin with the thumbs-up sign and cross sign and the Rs 2 coin
with

the 'V' sign and cross sign that were circulated before 2011 too were not
blind friendly. There is also a criticism that the Re 1 and Rs 2 coins
have

undergone three changes in a short period making the life of
visually-impaired miserable. Both the new Re 1 coin and the old 50p coin
that are similar in shape and size are in circulation adding to the
confusion, S Chezhiyan, a visually-impaired activist said.

The demand for bringing out blind-friendly coins preferably using braille
method is increasingly being made after the circulation of these new
series
of coins. We have made repeated representations to the government and
also

to the Reserve Bank of India but there has been no response, says M
Kamaraj, a differently-abled activist said.

According to him, even people with normal eyesight are checking the new
series of coins more than twice to confirm the denominations as they are
not noticeably different.

Hi Smita

You can also think of using your mobile phone to do the reading work for you or
even consider players like Angel.

You can also look into the option of using solar mobile chargers to take care
of your power needs. These can also charge MP3 players as well.

Re: [AI] Jaws verbosity

2013-03-21 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Hello Mukesh,

Are you sure that the problem is with Jaws? I did not find any settings for
new line or paragraphs in the verbosity dialogue box. If the problem is in
MsWord, then most likely the paragraph markers have been somehow turned on.
Press in that case Ctrl+Shift+8 to turn it off. Here 8 is on the
alphanumeric pad. If it does not work, look for checkboxes for formatting
marks on the View tab of Options under Tools. Uncheck the formatting markers
if they are on. This is for Office 2003.

Salute to you Mr Habeeb.
There is an old saying goes: rights are not granted, they are snatched.
And you did it.

What if there had been another person, who would have not known, about

Hello friends,

After all these years, if this is the attitude of an academic
community on the question of dignity of a visually challenged person,
what next.

Re: [AI] about accessibility of gsm data card.

2013-03-21 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Hello,

I have used hardly 2 or 3 data cards including my C5 handset. What I notice
is that whenever once successfully connected, all these data card programmes
create a dialup icon. You can access each of these icons from the Start menu
/ Connect to submenu. This is quite accessible. In all these instances the
username and password fields are left blank and the number to dial is *99#.
You don't have to fill in the blank fields. Only activate the Dial button.

For Windows XP, press the Window key and then the letter t for the list of
connections. For Windows 7, type Connect to the internet in the search box
and you will get the list of available connections.

A particular advantage of this process is that it connects your pc to the
internet without opening any home page. When I connect using the Micromax
software, the Micromac home page always comes up, costing some data each
time.

I'd request each one on this list not to generalise the issue of
accessibility of certain data cards in accordance with the brand name. I
can

furnish many examples where certain versions of some brands are accessible
but the higher versions of the same brands are not really accessible.
I myself can claim that the data card of iBall brand that I'm having is
not

only accessible in terms of connecting and disconnecting the internet, but
also accessible completely even with respect to making and receiving
calls,
sending and receiving text messages along with executing the USSD
commands.
When I suggested the same to one of my friends to get hold of the same
data

card, he bought it and found to be completely inaccessible, the difference
was in terms of their versions. the iBall data card that I'm having, and
found to be accessible is version 2.0 and the same brand data card that
the

person cited above, was provided is with version 3.0.
So in conclusion I'd say, accessibility should not be quoted mere on the
basis of the brand names.

Hi Srikanth,

Thanks for this information. However, are you aware whether or not this
school already has any children with vision impairment, or are inclusive in
their policy of admission? It is good to go equipped with the relevant
information when approaching them. Also, is the same one at Begumpet?

Thanks for any help,

Thanks

[AI] Saksham and nab delhi are offering 2 months computer training along with netbooks.

2013-03-21 Thread NAB Helpline
Dear Accessindians,

Greetings from NAB Delhi,

Here is a chance of getting computer training along with a netbook at a
subsidised rate.

GET A COMPUTER FOR YOURSELF ALONG WITH TRAINING TO USE IT

What is the benefit of learning computer if you cannot use one to become
independent in reading and writing after training is complete.

Saksham brings two batches of five seats each this summer of a unique
computer training programme with kind support from HCL.

Batch 1: In collaboration with National Association for the Blind, Delhi
State Branch will be conducted at computer training unit, National
Association for the Blind, , Sector 5, R.K. Puram, New Delhi. In addition
to the support from HCL, this batch is also supported by Tech Mahindra
Foundation for the training component.

Batch 2 will be held at Saksham School located at A2 Sector 31 Noida which
is supported entirely by HCL.

Both these batches will be conducted from 1st May to 30th June 2013.

A computer loaded with screen reading software and other useful applications
is almost like giving eyes back to persons with vision problem. This tool
can make them completely independent for almost all their reading and
writing needs.

Under this program participants have the opportunity of owning a computer
with all necessary software and learning their use at highly subsidized cost
. What we offer under this programme:

. Two Month Computer Training with completion certificate from
Saksham or NAB Delhi

. Option to appear in next CCC examination to be conducted by
DOEACC, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Government of
India

. A netbook loaded with License of NVDA with Eloquence, Lekha,
Sangita and E-speak voices for British, UK and Indian English and Hindi
languages. (If you already own a computer or if you need a laptop or desktop
instead of a netbook, then you may contact Saksham upon selection in any of
the batches)

. Samarth Tools loaded on netbook to write assignments, reading news
papers, referring to dictionary, web browsing, e-mails, reading books,
recording books and lessons, online banking, writing own cheques, listening
to music and much more.

. One year bookshare online library membership with collection of
75000 books in accessible format

. Membership of NAB or Saksham library with collection of 15000
books in talking book or accessible e-text formats

Process:

. Upon Selection, trainees are expected to pay Rs. 10,000/- to
Saksham. (interest-free loan facility is also available for this amount)

. New netbooks will be purchased for each trainee and they will be
trained on these netbooks itself.

. At the end of the training, trainees take these netbooks with them
along with training certificates.

The participants are expected to become independent in using the netbook
computer for reading, writing and communication purposes. And the best part
is that all this will be made possible using genuine softwares without extra
cost.

Boarding and lodging facility is presently not available for this program.
To apply contact the NAB Helpline by phone or email before 15th April 2013.

[AI] Guidelines confuse VI candidates before primary teachers recruitment test in Bengal

Guidelines confuse visually impaired candidates before primary teachers’
recruitment tests

21 March 2013

statesman news service

KOLKATA, 21 MARCH: Visually-impaired candidates for the primary school
teacher test scheduled later this month are worried they won't be able to
sit the exam, because of confusion among officials over guidelines for
disabled applicants.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's Department of Disabilities
last month issued a set of “uniform guidelines” on how to conduct exams for
people with disabilities.

Under the guidelines, people with a disability should be allowed to choose
how to take the exam, for example in braille, using a computer or in large
print. They should also be allowed extra time to complete the papers, and
people with a disability of over 40 per cent are allowed a scribe.

The West Bengal Primary Education Council has given only one guideline to
district officials, though, telling them that candidates can use a scribe
who is a student of Class IX or X, said Ms Shampa Sengupta, a
Kolkata-based activist. “No other provisions are dealt with. To make
things worse, every district office is giving different directions of how
to apply for a scribe,” she said, adding that as many as 500 people might
be affected by the confusion.

Mr Tridev Samanta, from West Midnapore, is hoping to take the exam and
become a primary school teacher. But he's 100 per cent visually-impaired,
he said, and has been trying to work out how he can get a scribe to help
him sit the exam.

Different district officials are telling him different things, said Mr
Samanta. Some say bring a photo of your scribe and name, some say fill out
a certain form, others say he needs a letter with permission from the
parent of the scribe.

He's worried he'll pick one route and then it'll be the wrong one. “I don't
want to just go to the exam and then be rejected,” he said.

Mr Samanta wants the state government to issue clear detailed rules that
officials and disabled candidates can follow. Ms Sengupta said she, and
other representatives from the Paschim Banga
Rajya Partibandhi Sammelani, met with Dr Aloke Bhattacharya, the deputy
secretary at the West Bengal Council of Primary Education yesterday, to
express their concerns. She said it was a positive meeting, but there is
very little time left to sort out the confusion. “Chances of implementation
of the same in this year’s examination is almost impossible,” she said,
“and visually disabled candidates of West Bengal will once again be
deprived of their rights that have been granted to them by the Central
Government.”

[AI] Need clearification regarding Talking ATM.

2013-03-21 Thread avinash shahi
Dear All

I just wish to know from those who access Talking ATMs installed by
various banks, Are you able to perform Card to Card Funds transfer
indipendently?
Here at JNU, One SBI's Talking AtM is installed, but when we induct
the pin, and Message starts coming 'Wellcome to SBI' and so on.
then it doesn't read all options like it shows without inducting Pin.
Isn't it a drawback of these ATM Machines?
How has been your experience.

Re: [AI] Guidelines confuse VI candidates before primary teachers recruitment test in Bengal

2013-03-21 Thread Amiyo Biswas
The situation is really very serious. First the education department of the
state government did not want to allow vh candidates in the exam. When Blind
Persons' Association, Kolkata moved the Kolkata High Court, the Court
nullified the department's notification in December 22.

Then the department issued a directive allowing scribe from class IX,
whereas the minimum qualification for eligibility of candidature is class
XII. Blind Persons' Association again protested against it. The department
or Board of Primary Education finally agreed to allow students from class X
on the ground that the questions were set on class X standard (of course
this is from an informal talk).

I recently kame to know that the candidates are being asked to get their
papers related to scribe signed by some district-level officer. It seems,
the Board is trying all means to prevent the vh candidates from appearing at
the exam, an old strategy adopted by the previous government in the late
nineties when we were fighting for our right for the exams under the School
Service Commission.

people with disabilities.

Sir, I checked with the second link also. At least the first link
gives me access to the page directly in html view, but the other link
opens in standard view itself. As I already mentioned, I'm not able to
set it as default view. This is the problem.

[AI] Akashwani denied him job, visually challenged man now voice of 91.2 FM

Block Quote
Satish Navale had been a radio buff and wanted to rule the airwaves.
To realise his dream, after completing graduation in 1995, this
visually challenged man with all programme schedules and other details
on his fingertips confidently approached Akashwani Pune to know about
his prospects of becoming a radio anchor, only to be told that the job
was not meant for a person with a disability like his.

I was told that as per the policy, they cannot hire a blind person
for that role, recalls Navale. Disappointed, Navale, then 22, wanted
to commit suicide. I grew up with this dream that shattered
instantly. However, I consoled myself and resolved not to give up, he
says.

Last month, 30-year-old Navale took over as the 'radio in-charge' at
Yaralavani community radio station in Jaliyal, 150 km from Sangli, and
is a known name among the listeners of 91.2 FM. He is probably the
only visually challenged person in the country who not only
coordinates and plans radio programmes but also hosts them.

Someone had advised me to study further and try making a career in
educational broadcasting, says Navale. So, after doing graduation
from Abasaheb Garware College (Pune), he pursued MA and MEd from the
University of Pune.

N V Deshpande, who founded Yaralavani around two years ago, says until
Navale came for the interview, he was not aware that the job seeker
was visually challenged. However, his knowledge about various radio
channels and the way they work was far superior than anybody Deshpande
knew. I had the confidence that his disability could be overcome with
technology. Within a month, he proved that my decision of hiring him
was right, says Deshpande, adding that Navale works without any
assistance.

Navale owes this knowledge to his obsession for radio. Since the age
of four, he says, he would listen to radio for around 16 hours a day.
I used to keep changing frequency after every 15-20 minutes or so.
The timing and duration of each and every programme was on my
fingertips, he says.

Prior to joining Yaralavani, Navale worked as an educational
researcher at University of Pune from 2008 to 2010. He then dabbled in
making e-learning modules for the visually challenged, which he
provided to various schools.

Talking about the initial challenges, Navale says being visually
impaired he had to work with softwares like Jaws and Tox. When you
use Jaws, the voice gets mixed with radio broadcasting. I tackled this
by using two headphones, he says. Navale also had to work on the
voice-level filter. On the radio mixer, he has made Braille-like
markings that can be felt with his fingers. With this, I can
recognise where the voice filter is located on the radio mixer and
accordingly I operate, he says, adding that with this kind of
technological adjustments any visually challenged person can work at
any radio station.

Along with playing Hindi and Marathi songs, the Yaralavani radio
station broadcasts live interactive programmes on social issues and
current events, moral stories, interviews of achievers, programmes on
English speaking and vocabulary, among others. He is on par with any
normal person and we don't make him feel special or different, says
Deshpande.

 Well, interesting.
Though not saying anything on main issue of regaining the deleted data from
FB, I would nonetheless say about consent that it should be operational,
i.e. actual, or presumed as in marriage, (Smile), verbal/written would not
 suffice.

 Friends
Is there anyway to regain deleted post on FB?
 Is FB private sphere?
I was having a very constructive textual talk on the issue of consentual
 sex.
And discussing that consent should be of which kind Written or Verbal?
and how it can be produce in Courts?
But that post has been deleted by the survelance body.
Because, we were extracting a meaning , that couples can keep their
