[AI] #Accessibility #DailyDose - Language

2018-06-21 Thread Shilpi Kapoor
Hi All,

I know a lot of you are interested in knowing more on accessibility. I write a
post on weekdays on LinkedIn on #Accessibility. Thought I will post it here
also for the benefit of people from Access India.

You can also connect with me on LinkedIn or then follow my Twitter feed to get
access to this also.

#Accessibility #DailyDose

If you speak in English, French or Hindi for that matter, don't you think it
would be helpful for people to know what language you are speaking in.

Well, the same applies to your web page content.

Specify the HTML lang attribute whether at a page level or if you have a
paragraph in a different language. Something so small can let the screen
reader choose the relevant voice, can assist in your search engine results or
even to translate content to a language you understand.

Thanks

2018-06-21 Thread Ajay Minocha
Website isn't really accessible with jaws.

Also, as Alok said, there are a lot of unnecessary Captchas.

Also, I am able to use their app but generating statements is a pain
even in the app without any captcha.

Cheers,
Ajay

 Hi  Amar,
 When we try to download historical statements, i.e. any statement older
 than six months, it asks for a captcha text to be entered. This captcha
 does not have any audio option as well. Of course this feature is
 reached after login, so need for a captcha at that stage does not sound
 very logical. I have been using HDFC net banking for many years now and
 this post-login captcha was not there earlier.

 When we try to view tax credit statement through net banking, it asks
 for captcha text to be entered. This is also after login, so not very
 logical. Also, once the user is redirected to traces website, there is
 one more captcha to deal with anyway.

 Another issue that comes up at times when I visit the branch is that
 in case of signature mismatch they say that their system does not
 display the photograph of the account holder, so it is difficult for
 them to verify. This is the case when people at the branch know me well
 enough. They eventually do the work after some persuasion but the need
 to persuade frequently is anyway there. If their system does not display
 the photograph of the account holder, it is worth considering having it
 there. This is based on the information provided by a branch official.

 More and more ATMs are now becoming talking ATMs. I have noticed that
 many SBI, ICICI, and other bank ATMs have become widely accessible.
 However, HDFC Bank seems to be lagging on that front.

 Thanks.
 Alok

2018-06-21 Thread Amar Jain
Hi Alok,

Some of what you are saying needs to be fought.

Even if you use signature, why don’t you submit a form for Braille enabled
debit card? I have for instance a JP World debit card and a Braille enabled
debit card.

I can only tell you that I won’t let them put any nonsensical restriction on
your account. To add to your comfort, write to:

aditya.p...@hdfcbank.com;
kmistry@hdfcbank.com

Copy me. And say that you are told of these issues and you want both cards. It
will solve your problem. While applying, in the product code, use MDVI1.

Remember to keep both cards active from limits and international perspective.

Regards,
Amar Jain

If i generate a virtual credit card using net safe, the generated card is shown
as an image and is inaccessible. I have to go the card history feature to find
details about my virtual card. I do not know if their netsafe app is accessible
on any platform.
The pdf forms in their customer center are not true forms so are hard to fill.
In phone banking, i need to validate my credit card if i call from a phone that
is not registered. The ivr timesout too quickly such that entering the digits
is a pain.

2018-06-21 Thread Alok Kaushik
Hi Amar,
I have not yet got their Braille debit card. If you are aware, can you let me
know about the following points.

1. Can Braille enabled card be used whether we have signature or thumb
impression in the account details? I was told that if I use thumb impression,
I will be restricted to use banking from my home branch and not from any
other branch.
2. Does this put any restriction or reluctance on part of the bank to extend
all the banking services?
3. Does Braille debit card help in any kind of verification at the branch, and
avoid issues related to signature mismatch?

Thanks.
Alok

Re: [AI] scribe guidelines

2018-06-21 Thread Amar Jain
The recommendations are severely problematic.

One level below has to have exceptions for let’s say a 11th class science or
commerce kid, who cannot expect that 10th class kid will be able to write
technical stuff.

The restriction on not being able to bring own scribe takes away the entire
things from our hands for which we fought so hard.

Special locations for exams with assistive devices is flaud. Someone remind
them that they fall fowl of RPWD if they don’t make their exams accessible.
Counter could be that exams don’t fall in services, and we need to draw linkage
to education / employment.

All the best! If this goes through, then... screwed.

Re: [AI] HDFC Bank customers: list your challenges by this weekend

2018-06-21 Thread Alok Kaushik
Hi  Amar,
When we try to download historical statements, i.e. any statement older than
six months, it asks for a captcha text to be entered. This captcha does not
have any audio option as well. Of course this feature is reached after login,
so need for a captcha at that stage does not sound very logical. I have been
using HDFC net banking for many years now and this post-login captcha was not
there earlier.

When we try to view tax credit statement through net banking, it asks for
captcha text to be entered. This is also after login, so not very logical.
Also, once the user is redirected to traces website, there is one more captcha
to deal with anyway.

Another issue that comes up at times when I visit the branch is that in case
of signature mismatch they say that their system does not display the
photograph of the account holder, so it is difficult for them to verify. This
is the case when people at the branch know me well enough. They eventually do
the work after some persuasion but the need to persuade frequently is anyway
there. If their system does not display the photograph of the account holder,
it is worth considering having it there. This is based on the information
provided by a branch official.

More and more ATMs are now becoming talking ATMs. I have noticed that many
SBI, ICICI, and other bank ATMs have become widely accessible. However, HDFC
Bank seems to be lagging on that front.

Thanks.
Alok

[AI] DARE TTI Competitive exams center for blind at Nagpur

2018-06-21 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Training in computers and competitive exams
We are a non-profit non-government organization working for the integration of
the persons with Disabilities in all walks of life through advocacy, research
and education. The aim of our projects is to create resources for the disabled
and champion their cause for their due rights and overall development through
all channels. We hope to put blind and disabled persons at par with able-bodied
in all walks of life including education, employment, family, home, culture and
life in general.
Laying the solid foundation merely is not sufficient. A child requires quality
education to “Grow” through life and not merely “Go” through it. Besides, all
the children studying at present through local language schools need a great
impetus to survive in 21st century in the form of state-of-the-art computer
education and rigorous preparation for competitive exams. We have been doing
incessant efforts in this direction for quite some time now and about couple of
dozen blind students have found government employment through our efforts.
However, to pursue this social objective in a systematic and organized manner,
we have set up “Capacity building center for blind youth”, CBCBY, in joint
collaboration with Technical Training Institute, TTI of Pune Blind Men’s
Association, PBMA, where blind and low vision students and non-students alike
keep pace with dynamic scenario of education and employment by undertaking
courses in computers, assistive technology, Spoken English, personality
development   and competitive exams.
At present around 12 students are learning all these skills in two batches and
are on their way to be independent and responsible citizens despite blindness.
We give them a personal computer on the completion of their course so that they
continue to actually use whatever they have learnt and are really empowered
through use of technology.
There are hardly any such centers in central India.

Competitive Exam Center

We in collaboration with Technical Training Institute, TTI Pune, have decided
to set up a dedicated Competitive Exam Center, CEC, to equip the blind and low
vision aspirants to crack various competitive exams like Banking, Staff
Selection, Railways, those for Central and state government jobs, civil
services, etc. The training would mainly focus on topics like:

· Reasoning;

· Quantitative aptitude;

· English;

· General awareness;

· Computer knowledge;

· Marketing;

· Soft skills and interview preparation;

· Personality development, etc.
For civil services a detailed training module for various subjects would be
integrated at alater stage.

Modalities
Training the blind/low vision aspirants is essentially same as training any
other able-bodied students, except for the fact that the materials have to be
provided in the accessible format and that they have to be given practice
through:

· human reader;

·  Interactive computerized question papers;

· Question sets in soft copy;

· audio material;

·  braille question sets etc.

We intend to employ a qualified trainer—sighted or blind—who has cracked the
exams himself/herself, or who has reached sufficiently advanced stage of
preparation himself/herself to guide the aspirants appropriately. We intend to
give entry level test to the aspirants comprising of 100 questions—20 questions
from each topic, viz:
Reasoning;
Quantitative aptitude;
English;
General Awareness; and
Computers and marketing
To assess their level of inclination and preparedness. This would help us to
train them appropriately and focus on the relevant areas in which they require
focused attention.
We would put added emphasis on conceptual understanding, as it must be accepted
that level of understanding of various subjects like maths, English, Reasoning
of blind students is not at all at par with sighted counterparts in the current
academic set-up. So, we would intensively prepare them in these subjects before
letting them compete in these areas.
We propose to conduct weekly tests topic wise to assess the progress of
students continuously. In six months we hope to put them on the pedestal where
they can confidently compete for various exams, making them appear in a couple
of exams during the course. The exit level test similar to the entry level test
except for the level of difficulty would also be conducted to assess the
learning. Apart from all this, they will be made to practice the sample
questions on each topic learnt on the daily basis through accessible modes and
their level of understanding would be monitored by keeping track of time taken,
number of questions attempted, number of correctly solved questions and number
of incorrectly solved questions and number of questions left unanswered. It is
hoped that their graph would keep improving with time.

The batch is commencing

Re: [AI] scribe guidelines

2018-06-21 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
In my view there should be just some minimum eligibility to the
scribe. The scribe being 1 level below the candidate may not work in
certain situations. For example, the minimum qualification to write
UPSC is an undergrad degree. So If someone appears for his/her exam
immediately after his undergrad, then the scribe will be expected to
be 1 level below undergrad degree which is literally the higher
secondary level. So considering this, UPSC or in fact the entire
government agency should fix a minimum qualification to be a scribe.

Subject: [AI] The enlightened couple with visions for the future!

Friends,

Last evening, Shiv Kumar Sharma and Mita Gupta tied the knot, at a
sprawling wedding ceremony at Chandigarh. Both are Post Graduates from
Panjab University and employed.

The list members will be happy and motivated to learn that both, Shiv and
Mita, are Visually Impaired.

Despite all the usual hassles and apprehensions of both the families, the
couple decided that they are made for each other and there is no point
waiting for a sighted match; which is most unlikely to come by.

I guess this is the most realistic and practical approach, instead of
waiting till eternity.

Please bless the newly wedded couple.
