Re: [AI] Dmat account

2023-06-23 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi all,
Continuing on the same discussion, when I went to bank for signature
attestation required by the AMC, I got to know one more thing.
They say that ECS/ Bank mandate/cheque facility cannot be given to VI
persons using thumb impression.
If so, how will I operate my demat account? I mean how can I make
transactions?

I would also like to mention the reason given by the HDFC branch manager.
According to him they have no way to verify the thumb impression everytime
a debit instruction comes. Signature can be verified but not the thumb
impression resulting into more chances of fraud.

Experts please guide.

Re: [AI] Dmat account

2023-06-22 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi all, thank you for your replies.
Kanchanji, I am trying to open an account with NJ e wealth which has tie up
with both NSDL and CDSL.
My mom is an investment advisor with NJ. She is my introducer and will be
managing all the processes.
Coming to taking up the issue, I don't have much technical know-how. I am
not sure what exactly the risks could be in e signing with thumb
impression. Also can't make out when it comes to financial matters, why
banks, AMCs or any such institutions are so apprehensive. What could be the
thought process behind this? Is it really risky for a blind person to give
bank mandates or any such authorisations?
For these reasons, I have applied physically. But somehow neither me nor my
mom was happy with this. Hence, I put this matter here.

Pavan ji,
Thank you for those circulars. Although the NSDL circular is very clear
about the procedure, the CDSL one mentions only about illiterate /
temporarily disabled persons. It is not giving any clarity about permanent
blind persons like us.
I have forwarded these to the concerned person.

Would love to hear more from all the knowledgeable people here.
Also will update you about the further proceedings.

Thanks and regards,
Kriya Jain

Re: [AI] We should demand for the accessible exam

2022-10-20 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi all,
Adding my own experience here.
I wrote the tspsc group 1 last sunday. Following is my experience:
1. The guidelines on their website as well as on the hall ticket, only
mentioned that scribe will be allowed and 20 minutes extra will be given
for every one hour. ( That makes 50 minutes for 2 and half hours paper. )
2. The center was almost 40 km away from my residence.
3. We had requested a friend of mine to write the exam and she happily
accompanied me to the center. But after reaching the center, we were
informed that they had already arranged the scribe. We obliged without any
argument. We reassured whether the scribe would be able to read English
very well. It was an English medium school so it didn't seem a problem.
4. Assistance was given for biometric and other formalities.
5. The problem started when we began writing the exam. The scribe was an
inter student and was slow in reading questions. The paper was too lengthy
with lengthy instructions and 5 multiple choices for each questions. As the
scribe had no practice, she simply kept reading every question rather than
cutting off to the basics. I tried to answer as quick as possible and kept
the mathematical questions aside to be answered later. I could answer
total 100 questions out of 150.
6. As soon as the time got over, the invigilator rushed to take away the
answer sheet. I informed her about extra time. She waited for twenty more
minutes and came and snatched the paper I tried to reason with her. But
she said only 20 minutes will be given extra. She took the paper and left.

Loss of 30 minutes for me. I am sure I could have answered a few more in
this time and even more if the scribe was efficient enough in reading the
paper.

I am unable to understand why there are no clear guidelines about scribe.
Also where should I complain about the compensatory time?

Thanks for the long read.
Regards
Kriya Jain

Re: [AI] Sum solving

2022-08-07 Thread Kriya Jain
For my daughter, calculator was allowed in degree exams so calculation was
not a problem. The scribe used to read out the numbers and then simply
calculate on the calculator.
Don't remember if the same was allowed during 11th and 12th boards.
For practising, she would use excel.
But accountancy is more about accounting concepts so we need to focus more
on them and trust the scribe for calculations with basic instructions of
course.

One more advice. Please make sure that the scribe knows the basics of how
accounts are written.
For more information, you can contact me off the list on 8074688720.

Re: [AI] suggestions needed for accessible appliance two heat food

That's what I have been saying. For basic functions of microwave, it
doesn't have to be talking. Any basic microwave is fine for performing
tasks like reheating. Just ask a sighted person to put some marking or
label it, if it's touch screen. That's it.

Re: [AI] suggestions needed for accessible appliance two heat food

2022-03-13 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi,
When alone at home, I use microwave to heat my food. My mother generally
puts a portion for me in a glass bowl (or i serve myself) which I reheat in
a microwave.
The microwave is not accessible and has a touch screen. But my mom has
marked major buttons with the help of nail paint.
I think induction cook top can also be used in similar manner.
Hope this helps.
Thanks and regards

Thank you Ram kumar ji.
Can you please give examples as to which companies are giving mediclaim to
VI?
Star health people are excluding only blind people whereas all other
handicaps are included.

So wanted to know if all companies deny mediclaim to visually impaired

They are providing the same for other handicap though.

[AI] About Accessibility at workplace

2022-02-14 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi all,
I am going to join Genpact india in a short period of time. I have few
questions on mind regarding accessibility issues at workplace. Need some
expert guidance on this.
1. As this is my first job, I am not sure how much demanding I should be.
Ex: my work would be mostly on data. Should I ask for jaws or can i simply
use freely available nvda?
2. I found that the company app for employee support is not at all
accessible. How should I approach this? Should I ask them straight away? Or
should I wait and watch? For now I took sighted help for documentation. But
don't know how things can work in future.
3. The main point here is that even though corporates like these have many
policies in place related to accessibility and inclusion I don't know how
far they go in reality. And how demanding we can be for our rights being
freshers.

Inputs from experienced friends will be very helpful.
Thanks and regards.

Re: [AI] important read- a very insightful tweet thread shared by a scribe who wrote the SBI exam for a visually impaired person.

2019-06-27 Thread Kriya Jain
Going through the interesting post!
Because of some illegitimate practices by a few blind people, now a days
the whole blind community is being criticized. It has become an excuse even
for the authorities for not giving proper facilities when it comes to
examination.
Are there no cheaters in the sighted community?
I am sighted, working in a college and seeing a few students being
detained almost every examination, in spite of our college being private
one and very strict. I am sure the scene must be worse in many other
colleges. If someone somewhere cheats, does the hammer comes on the whole
of sighted community?
Then why so with the blind community? Why should the whole community be
judged based on the actions of a few? They are denied their basic rights
and shown the door as if the whole community have done some crime.
The authorities simply want to shake the responsibilities off their
shoulders by sighting a few such examples as excuses.

Re: [AI] Guidelines for exemption from drawing graphs and diagrams in exams/visual based questions: urgently needed

2019-06-12 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi Srinivasu Chakravarthula

Kriya does try to explain the graphs in all the exams.
The question is the controller of examination, being unaware of any rules
related to this, wants something that he can submit to the evaluators. He
wants to help her from his side but does not know how he can communicate
this to the evaluators. During the external examinations our papers are
evaluated by external evaluators. He doesn't know how this exemption thing
can be passed on to them.

Thanks
Kanchan

Re: [AI] Guidelines for exemption from drawing graphs and diagrams in exams/visual based questions: urgently needed

2019-06-11 Thread Kriya Jain
Ours is an Autonomous college affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad.
I also tried to find out from students from other affiliated colleges as to
how things are for them. They say there is actually no clarity about
scribes and the evaluation of answers with visual inputs. The scribe issue
is mostly left at the discretion of the centre and about evaluation, no
one knows what happens.
If you can find out some rules, it will help us.
If nothing about osmania university is found, I would like to know what
other universities are following.

Thanks
Kanchan

[AI] Guidelines for exemption from drawing graphs and diagrams in exams/visual based questions: urgently needed

2019-06-11 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi accessindians
My daughter kriya jain has written her B.Com 1st year exams and her results
are out. She got A in all subjects except in economics. She got D in
economics. Even though if we consider thatbshe might not have written the
paper that well, B was acceptable and not D. What I understand after the
discussion with the faculty is that she might have lost marks because of
lack of graphs.
When I brought this to the notice of exam branch, I am told to bring some
guidelines which says that a V I student is exempted from drawings.
I searched the internet and found that the 2013 guidelines don't speak
anything about the same.
Now I want help from you all.
Is there any guideline or rules that anyone knows which mentions about the
exemption? If so please forward it to me on urgent basis as I am
considering re evaluation.
Thanks and regards
Kanchan jain

I am able to login with my email ID. The problem occurs when I request
download from their site. They don't provide direct download link it seems.
And when I request download, I get a mail asking me to login with my ID
Number and then download the book. And the problem is I don't know what
this ID number is.

Re: [AI] Suggestions needed: For Parents to communicate to their young daughter about her disability

2019-02-27 Thread Kriya Jain
As the subject suggests, more emphasis has been put on how to communicate
to their young daughter about their disability, for the parents.
Social and economic environment might affect the growing process and the
facilities provided. But the basic necessities remain the same.
And of course, rehab is the first & immediate need of the child.

Re: [AI] Suggestions needed: For Parents to communicate to their young daughter about her disability

2019-02-26 Thread Kriya Jain
Raise your differently abled child just how you woul raise his/her other
siblings!!!
This is the first thing I would recommend to any of the new parents.
We don't keep telling our sighted children about what they have and what
they don't (especially at a young age of 2 or 4). Similarly no need of
telling the VI child about what he/she has and what is not there. Any
special conversation around the topic will make it unnecessarily important.
It's just that let the child grow and adapt to the atmosphere around her.
Just provide assistive devices wherever needed. Let the child adapt to them
very naturally and relish her childhood just like any other child.
I did the same with my daughter. In fact until the age of 7-8, I guess she
was not much aware of her disability. she would think that the world was
like that only, with different kinds of people where all people are blessed
with some talent and some deficiencies. (Yes, I had always told her that
God has not given everything to a single person).
After a certain age I realised that she should now know the ground reality.
she should know how things work in the sighted world, and how her world is
a little different where she needs to work a little bit to make everything
work for her. She should face the fact that there is a world out there
where everything is made available from the perspective of sighted persons
and we need to correct them  to fit to our own needs!
Slowly, I started revealing this to her with very short talks, never giving
her disability any importance at all.
I remember, she once told me that she would also ride vehicles like me. I
did not react at that time. Just diverted her attention. After that
whenever this talk came, I slowly inserted a few sentences to make her
aware of the fact that she cannot drive ( in fact I told her she can, but
not on roads).
I never discussed these topics as a serious issue.
So the result is, the disability never overpowered my daughter's mind. She
grew up dreaming just like her sighted sibling, wanting everything in the
world. Today I can proudly say that she has grown into a very positive
adult!
So my suggestion to these parents is:
1. Don't waste time anymore. Accept the fact and start providing you child
with assistive devices.
(I always wonder why in India we are still not working on giving cane to
our child as early as the child takes the first step. But this needs
detailed discussion on a different mail)
2. Don't worry too much about informing the child about the disability.
3. If the child is too curious to know and have any queries, DO answer
them. But make it a point that the answers are more factual and technical.
Just make the child aware of the facts and talk as if it is not a big deal.
4. Last but very important. DO NOT BE OVER PROTECTIVE!!
And yes, not all children are alike. What works for one might not work for
other. We just need to try and learn.

Wish the child a great future!!!

Regards,
Kanchan Jain.

Re: [AI] Need some information about OCR in PDF

2019-02-18 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi Arvind R
Thanks for the information that you provided. I do use knfb reader for the
purpose. But it has limitations as I don't have the paid version.
I still have a few queries.
What when I get scanned pdfs?
If Images are scanned with a regular scanner, there is an option of OCR.
How to use it?
I have never used kurzweil and don't know much about it.
Also let me know currently which is the best way to convert prints into
accessible material.

Thanks
Kanchan Jain

2019-02-18 Thread Kriya Jain
Greetings to all!
I need to regularly scan printed material for my daughter. I use various
ways like Google lense, knfb reader, scanning etc., for the purpose.

I actually need to know what OCR in PDF means and how is it related to
making the PDFs accessible.

Please guide me in detail about this.

Thanks & regards,

Re: [AI] Chopping Vegetables

2018-12-18 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi Amar,
Food processor of old models used to be time consuming. Even the sighted
people used to feel so. but the ones available now in market are much
better. I myself had postponed buying of a food processor for the same
reason. But after some research, I bought Preethi Zodiac Food Processor
last year. Believe me, It has been a boon. The assembling and dissembling
processes are very easy. Just needs a little practice. I would really
recommend it. Similar kinds are available in other brands too. But better
go by the recommendations of those who are already using it rather than the
sales persons in the shops. They hardly have any idea.

Re: [AI] Chopping Vegetables

2018-12-18 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi
You can use electric chopper that are easily available in the market.
Though not with voice commands, these have very simple operating features
and you can easily learn to use it with 2 or three uses. One more thing I
would suggest is a food processor to fulfill your needs of chopping,
shredding, slicing, juicing and kneading dough.

Recently, NAB in collaboration with Big Bazaar had organised a workshop
called "cooking without looking". It was convened by Payal Kapoor and Neha
Agarwal in Hyderabad. You can go through their videos too.
