Certainly. In fact my wife and I were to miss our flight recently at Bangalore
to Chennai. I'm writing and email to Indigo and DGCA today.

Yes this is very tereble! One is left completely at bay with no anouncments
about flights! I feel so insecure and can be driven crazy! In the past twice
I have been forgotten by the airline staff at the time of boarding! I
managed to get the flight by just calling out to the people walking around
and asking them to help me to get to my flight! And this happened when
there were announcements everywhere! I am so scared what may happen now?
And mind you, there are no flight anouncments, but they play music and
songs!
Do tell me how I can participate in this end ever to get back the
announcements?

Dear all,
I'm a frequent flyer, and i am beginning to notice the concept of
silent airpoerts increasing day by day. its terrible if you are
someone with a disability, elderly, or illiterate. if you are at Delhi
international airport for example each rest bay has 20 sections with
just one display board per bay. this is super inconvinient even if you
are able to read the display.
The bigger issue here is the blatant disregard of accessibility
norms. I'm quite upset and will like to know how did this concept
lach on and how come the disability rights groups are silent on the
issue?
What can be done about it? what does everyone on this list feel?

2013-09-04 Thread Shireen Irani
yes i too was thinking of the signature petition to start with.
we can also approach the press in our own capacity, starting with
writing letters to reader's columns, and if any1 has contacts in the
mainstream media, we could talk to a few people to do a column.
meanwhile i'm going to try and talk to a senior airindia official to
see whether our grievience can at least informally reach the concerned
authority.
i think she might also help us get in touch with the right people to
voice the issue.

Hi
One of the means to achieve this is by making a petition at change.org

The default page, in many an occasion has accessibility issues. One should take
care to make the petition fully accessible.
The second big task is to get people to sign it.

DGCA would be the correct authority to address it. I amy add here, DGCA is now
pretty sensitive to disabled needs. This has happend by the positive
interaction of NGO's with them.

i think mr george has asked a pertinant question. before taking any
immediate action it must be established whether all airports r doing
this with all airlines following the same policy. i have no legal
knowledge but i still think it must be varified whether this new norm
or system is an official mandate or some general theory of particular
staff members at the airport.
i'm not doubting the news, but i'm slightly reluctant to believe that

thanx for the news link.
sure we have enough reason to fight for it. especially since they've
been considerate enough to put display screenes all over the place.
it wont be long before they start implementing the same for trains as well.

Re: [AI] Announcement at airports

2013-09-03 Thread avinash shahi
I didn't follow this unfortunate development earlier.
But yes, silent airport has become the new global norm...
Perhaps they think blind people don't board airplanes...
What's happening in this country despite this media exposure to
disability concerns is really disturbing.
Here is IBN report telecast in April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa7ccrgCEus

Re: [AI] Announcement at airports

2013-09-03 Thread Shireen Irani
i think mr george has asked a pertinant question. before taking any
immediate action it must be established whether all airports r doing
this with all airlines following the same policy. i have no legal
knowledge but i still think it must be varified whether this new norm
or system is an official mandate or some general theory of particular
staff members at the airport.
i'm not doubting the news, but i'm slightly reluctant to believe that
announcements would be entirely banned in the name of noise polution.
would it be possible for any1 to insist on some authentic official
source claiming the same??
again, i'm not sure if my concern is vallid. its just a quary because
i think your gonna need the official source to fight the cause in the
1st place.
best,
Shireen.

Hi George,

This is an airport regulation and is applicable to all airlines.

That's despicable.
Sometimes, even after the announcement is made, they fail to come. I was
recently traveling from Delhi to Nagpur when nobody came to take me for a
good 15 minutes after the announcement for boarding was made.
I had to call a local airport attendant whose number I had taken earlier
just for such an eventuality. He came and resolved the problem. This can be
a nerve-racking experience sometimes.

Re: [AI] Announcement at airports

2013-08-31 Thread Preeti Monga
Though help is always forth coming at all airports most of the time, one
has to keep a sharp look out for yourself. I usually take the mobile number
of the ground assistant who helps me into the airport so if no one has come
to me nearing my boarding time, I can call her/him. A few years back, at the
Ranchi airport, the MDLR airlines almost forgot me on the airport! The
flight was all boarded and I kept waiting and then when I felt that things
were getting very much delayed and no one had come for me, I just called out
to someone sitting near me and asked the lady to take me to the boarding out
door and then they suddenly realized that I had not boarded and rushed me
into the plane! Also, once when I was traveling Jet Air, I was just left
sitting waiting for the attendant while I was hearing my name being
announced over and over again to report to the boarding door like " this is
the last and final call for Preeti Monga"! Then I had to call the customer
care number on my mobile and tell them that this is what was happening and
after a long time they came rushing for me! "Oh sorry we forgot you were
blind and needed help" they said!
So with no announcements at airports, I really wonder how we are going to
get through? Preeti

Thanks for taking this issue on the list. These government officials
are acting like idiots so that they are acting very stupidly now a

If they have stopped these announcements on the major airports, why?
other cities are not polluted? We should definately challenge on this

I think no need to ask the views on the matter. it is obvious the visually

all the members agree with this. the question is what can we do upon it.

Dear All

While my last visit to Bangalore, I noticed that both Mumbai & Bengaluru
airports had no announcement made using the Public Address system or PA
system.

Announcement about the flight details, security check, departure terminal
etc. Were all missing.

Upon enquiring about the same, was informed that the announcement are been
stopped for reducing the noise pollution and making the airports Eco
Friendly.

Whereas the same PA systems were used to play bollywood music.

I fail to understand how can the music comply for Eco Friendly
environment?

The airport staff are also disturbed without the announcement, as many of
the passengers miss their flights due to this.

And the announcement really help us (blind) to commute independently.

Let me know your views too.

Re: [AI] Announcement at airports

That is a very unhelpful and insensitive policy. and no need to say it
is not really sensible either. Think we should raise our voice against
this.

[AI] Announcement at airports

2013-08-30 Thread Kotian, H P
Friends
The following mail failed to get to the list. Copyng below.
Harish Kotian

Quoting:
Dear All

While my last visit to Bangalore, I noticed that both Mumbai & Bengaluru
airports had no announcement made using the Public Address system or PA system.

Announcement about the flight details, security check, departure terminal etc.
Were all missing.

Upon enquiring about the same, was informed that the announcement are been
stopped for reducing the noise pollution and making the airports Eco Friendly.

Whereas the same PA systems were used to play bollywood music.

I fail to understand how can the music comply for Eco Friendly environment?

The airport staff are also disturbed without the announcement, as many of the
passengers miss their flights due to this.

And the announcement really help us (blind) to commute independently.

Let me know your views too.
