yes i too was thinking of the signature petition to start with. we can also approach the press in our own capacity, starting with writing letters to reader's columns, and if any1 has contacts in the mainstream media, we could talk to a few people to do a column. meanwhile i'm going to try and talk to a senior airindia official to see whether our grievience can at least informally reach the concerned authority. i think she might also help us get in touch with the right people to voice the issue. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
Hi One of the means to achieve this is by making a petition at change.org The default page, in many an occasion has accessibility issues. One should take care to make the petition fully accessible. The second big task is to get people to sign it. DGCA would be the correct authority to address it. I amy add here, DGCA is now pretty sensitive to disabled needs. This has happend by the positive interaction of NGO's with them. oh. ok. so it is official. thanx for the news link. sure we have enough reason to fight for it. especially since they've been considerate enough to put display screenes all over the place. it wont be long before they start implementing the same for trains as well. I didn't follow this unfortunate development earlier. But yes, silent airport has become the new global norm... Perhaps they think blind people don't board airplanes... What's happening in this country despite this media exposure to disability concerns is really disturbing. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
i think mr george has asked a pertinant question. before taking any immediate action it must be established whether all airports r doing this with all airlines following the same policy. i have no legal knowledge but i still think it must be varified whether this new norm or system is an official mandate or some general theory of particular staff members at the airport. i'm not doubting the news, but i'm slightly reluctant to believe that announcements would be entirely banned in the name of noise polution. would it be possible for any1 to insist on some authentic official source claiming the same?? again, i'm not sure if my concern is vallid. its just a quary because i think your gonna need the official source to fight the cause in the 1st place. best, Shireen. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
Though help is always forth coming at all airports most of the time, one has to keep a sharp look out for yourself. I usually take the mobile number of the ground assistant who helps me into the airport so if no one has come to me nearing my boarding time, I can call her/him. A few years back, at the Ranchi airport, the MDLR airlines almost forgot me on the airport! The flight was all boarded and I kept waiting and then when I felt that things were getting very much delayed and no one had come for me, I just called out to someone sitting near me and asked the lady to take me to the boarding out door and then they suddenly realized that I had not boarded and rushed me into the plane! Also, once when I was traveling Jet Air, I was just left sitting waiting for the attendant while I was hearing my name being announced over and over again to report to the boarding door like " this is the last and final call for Preeti Monga"! Then I had to call the customer care number on my mobile and tell them that this is what was happening and after a long time they came rushing for me! "Oh sorry we forgot you were blind and needed help" they said! So with no announcements at airports, I really wonder how we are going to get through? Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
I have experienced this too. I set an alarm on my mobile phone for 30 minutes before boarding. Staff usually gets me but there are times I have gotten up and begun to walk in the general direction of the airline counter. You get help very quickly in that situation. http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
Hello Madam, Thanks for taking this issue on the list. These government officials are acting like idiots so that they are acting very stupidly now a days. Announcements are very useful not only for the visually challenged, but many cyted people r also follow the same. If they have stopped these announcements on the major airports, why? other cities are not polluted? We should definately challenge on this issue with the airport authorities. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
I think no need to ask the views on the matter. it is obvious the visually challenged benefit from the announcement systems to a great extent. I hope all the members agree with this. the question is what can we do upon it. Re: [AI] Announcement at airports
That is a very unhelpful and insensitive policy. and no need to say it is not really sensible either. Think we should raise our voice against this.
