Re: [AI] VI persons in politics.

2013-06-19 Thread Amiyo Biswas
We should involve ourselves in all kinds of social activities, especially
issues related to common interests. VI students should fight for the
interests of the common students, others should also join any movement in
the interest of the common people. I am not suggesting that we should not
take care of our own interests. We have to fight for our interests. The
disabled alone can understand their problems. At the same time we are social
beings, too. So, wherever you are, help your dighted colleagues and friends,
if possible, join active politics according to your own belief.

i heard in a speech of shri Somnath Chatterjee, the former lok sabha
speaker, that some time back, there was a member of parliament named
Jamunaprasad Shastri, who happened to be a person with visual
disability.

Dipankar
Roy travelled alone almost all over India. Both of them lost their sight
in

early childhood.

I have also heard of S.R. Bombai who had one leg only. He was Union
minister

for some time and worked as the President of the Janata Party. I don't
know

when he lost his leg, before he joined politics or not.

S.K. Rumta of NFB contested for a Lok-Sabha seat from Delhi in the 80s
as

an

independent candidate. He lost to Rajesh Khanna, true, but he polled
6000

votes. He did not represent any political party, as far as I know.

We can think of the issue from another view point. We are now given
dummy

Braille ballots to make the election more accessible. How far are we
really

remembered by the parties? Since we are spread across the country, how
big
the challlened community is, we cannot influence the result. But
religion

or

language-based communities can influence the election in a more
effective

way. Since they are concentrated at a particular region, parties have to
look upon them with respect with eyes on their votes.

Re: [AI] VI persons in politics

2013-06-18 Thread Sagar Sodah
This is a very nice topic.

There are two aspects to making positive change through politics:

First is by through political pressure or mobilizing public opinion. This
is where the number game comes in.
While visually impaired people are not enough to constitute a vote base,
you could have a decent number if you include all disabilities, along with
the family of the voters with disabilities.

Second way is to directly be part of the process. Which can be done as
bureaucrats elected representatives and as advisors to government
committees or even panels within political parties.

I would like to expand on the first route a little bit. In the current
system of First Past The post, having a group spread out makes it less
powerful than if it was concentrated. This point has been made before in
the discussion. Now, in the coming years there is a good chance that we may
switch to a Mixed Proportional Representative System, in wich case the
consolidated vote percentage would also count. So this will definetly make
the voice of persons with disabilities stronger.

Even considering the current First Past The Post system, if you go into the
electoral realities, candidates in many cases win by a mere 5% or less of
votes. We do not need numbers enough to elect a candidate, we just need
enough to make the second position win. So the strategy of building a
political pressure group is very much a realistic strategy. Now again the
challenge comes in getting people registered to vote, which is a separate
topic altogether.

I personally believe more and more people with disabilities should join the
political process. As people with disabilities we have great insight to the
concepts of accessibility, standardization, and on the other hand the need
for flexibility. Such insight along with the "presumed" sincerity of
person with disability, is a great combination to have in a political
leader.

Again, it does not mean winning or even contesting, it could simply be
being involved in committees within political parties and also those formed
by government.

Would like others opinions on this

One of my friends tried his luck in dDelhi elections. His name is Bhupender
Singh.
He is a teacher. He did not resign before filing his nominations and hence
he had to face a departmental inquery. He got around five hundred votes and
lost his deposit. In 1998 elections, as far as my memory goes, he got a

SURAT: Rambhai Patel does not wear khadi. He has no political
connection and has never contested an election. But, on May 16,
Rambhai, a visually impaired
retired telephone operator in Valsad achieved something that is the
envy of seasoned politicians - he polled 27,429 votes as an
Independent in the Lok
Sabha elections.

Yet, fighting elections was not something Rambhai had dreamt of. "I
wanted to teach politicians a lesson, show them that elections are not
won by money,
muscle and liquor power, but by good work and commitment to the
people. I cannot see the world, but I decided to open the eyes of
politicians who are blind
to the ills plaguing our country," says 59-year-old Rambhai, who
retired from the Valsad District Co-operative Bank last year.

2013-06-18 Thread Kanchan Pamnani

Adding to the thread-
1. Javed Abidi stood or as I always say sat for the Lok Sabha elections in
2004 but alas
2. Also I think someVI stood from Gujrat. Someone can check AI archives and
inform the group.
3. I have been hearing rumours of the current Home Minister Mr. Shinde
having lost one eye. I think it is a Retina problem. Lets wait and see if he
stands in 2014.

There will be others who are old and frail and who should actually be
classified as Disabled who will continue to be politicians.

I am glad to see that some people are interested in the group in politics
and not merely political science for studying and teaching.

If anyone is standing for elections next year or even for a Municipal
election then please let us know. I would be happy to leave my work and work
on the campaign.

Thanks for the information. I think, data and statistics on the disabled
persons will help. I tried www.censusindia.gov.in
from my office computer. But the navigation is too slow and irritating. Can
anyone suggest a good site or send me the data by private email?

My friend has asked me to prepare a write-up on it. So you understand my
problem. My home pc works fine, but I can't work on it until Sunday.

Hi,

This is a very fascinating topic to discuss..
I am not aware of any Indian visually impaired politicians. Or at least I
wasn't until I read your post. But there have been many blind politicians
in other countries..
The former governor of New York City, David Paterson, is completely
blind..
British MP and former union minister David Plunkett is also blind. He
travels everywhere with his guide dog, even to the House of Commons. This
has led to a few funny incidents..
Even Gordon Brown is blind in one eye, but I don't think that matters
much..
Many disabled politicians try to hide their disability in order to show
that they are not weak. The best example being JFK, who never even allowed
anyone to take a single picture of him in his wheelchair.

Re: [AI] VI persons in politics.

2013-06-17 Thread Amiyo Biswas
No, none of these two politicians was partially sighted. Both of them were
totally sightless. Sadhan Gupta was a successful lawyer and he was the
additional advocate general of West Bengal for quite a long time. Dipankar
Roy travelled alone almost all over India. Both of them lost their sight in
early childhood.

I have also heard of S.R. Bombai who had one leg only. He was Union minister
for some time and worked as the President of the Janata Party. I don't know
when he lost his leg, before he joined politics or not.

S.K. Rumta of NFB contested for a Lok-Sabha seat from Delhi in the 80s as an
independent candidate. He lost to Rajesh Khanna, true, but he polled 6000
votes. He did not represent any political party, as far as I know.

We can think of the issue from another view point. We are now given dummy
Braille ballots to make the election more accessible. How far are we really
remembered by the parties? Since we are spread across the country, how big
the challlened community is, we cannot influence the result. But religion or
language-based communities can influence the election in a more effective
way. Since they are concentrated at a particular region, parties have to
look upon them with respect with eyes on their votes.

Anpother friend of mine wants some information on visually impaired or other
physically challenged persons in active politics. I know of barrister Sadhan

famous as an orator and as an organiser. People remember him for his role in
