Thomas,
Agree support is not all it could be but I think your management could
be
usefully employed in
talking to IBM management, to get your unacceptable support improved.
Unfortunately my experience is that should you switch to a different
solution,
you will just end up
with different issues and probably the same complaints about the
support.
That said I am in a pretty similar environment running OS390 2,10  and
TSM
server 4.2 2 and
our performance is reasonable. So if you were having your severe memory
leak
problems back when you were at 4.2.2 the problem may be more site
specific.

Subject:  TSM support issues

We have a 4.2.3.2 TSM server running under OS/390. We expect to add
more
TSM clients, and the workloads on two other mainframe applicatios are
increasing. The mainframe is already short of real memory, and is
heading
rapidly for shortages of CPU capacity and network bandwidth. One of
the
options being discussed is moving the TSM server to AIX. At least one
manager has argued that we should consider migrating to a different
enterprise backup solution. One of his arguments is that we are
getting
poor quality code and poor support.

We have been struggling with one or more memory leaks for a couple of
months. Patch level upgrades have improved performance somewhat, but
have
not fixed the problem. We are still finding it necessary to restart
the
TSM server twice a day to maintain acceptable performance.

Back when we decided to upgrade to the 4.2.3.2 level I went to the
anonymous FTP server and found a text file referring me to the TSM
server
README for information on a password protected FTP server. The
information was not in the README file, so I sent out a query on this
list and opened a severity 2 incident with IBM/Tivoli. I started
getting
responses from the list in a couple of hours. IBM/Tivoli finally saw
fit
to contact me after five days.

We have since opened another serverity 2 incident for the apparent
memory leak. It has typically taken days of repeated calls to get
administrative responses, such as confirmation that dumps were
received. It took weeks to get a substantive technical response.
We were recently told that our symptoms match open APAR PQ69840. I got
a copy of the APAR description. The alleged match is so poor that I
am struggling to convince myself that the claim was a mistake and not
a deliberate lie.

I welcome any suggestions for rebutting the argument that it is time
to look for a product with better code and better support.

I have a non-collocated sequential (tape) storage pool. Why should there
ever be more than one tape in Filling status? I have four. Why can't it
fill one up and then start another? These are Super-DLT tapes, so each
one means something - 200gb compressed.

I understand why I have lots of Filling tapes in a collocated tape pool
- that's the whole idea of collocation. But this is happening in a
non-collocated tape pool.

backupset management

2003-02-02 Thread Burak Demircan
Dear TSMers,
I am using backupsets for remote archiving purposes. As you already now we
state retention period
while creating them. Is there a method to put them pending state and delete

Because i feel that they will expire automatically (after the period) and it is
difficult to watch expire inventory results and check

My recovery log is filling up at a rapid rate.  I am running TSM at 4.1.3
on the mainframe.  It is 4.6 GB and my DB is 48 GB with 46 GB in use.  I am
not running expiration of the inventory yet due to a previous deletion of a
nodes data, could that be the cause?  I noticed that the log is reaching
about 95% full before I run another full backup.  I usually run a full DB
backup every day at 4:30.  What can I do?  I can't increase the recovery
log because I guess on this version it can only go to 5 GB?  What version
is this no longer true for?  I really need help and I can't find anyone
from IBM to return my calls.  My previous problem with the recovery log is
no longer true.  It does now reset back to 0% after a full backup, but I am
running out of space.  I do have the log fully extended and with the 5 GB
limit I am stuck.  Also, I can't set up a DB backup trigger because I am on
the mainframe and that feature of TSM is not available.  Thank you in
advance for any help you can give me

Hello everybody,

When you upgrade the firmware in your drive and/or library, is it necessary
to (under AIX) 'rmdev -dl' the library and drives and (in TSM) 'delete

The drives went from 22T4 to 25D4 and the library went from 2.72.0012 to
2.80.0041.

We are currently doing an initial DR-test, and received an RS/6000 and 3584
library with four drives to do the test with.

However, we are having quite a few problems with the library and/or drives.
*Many* I/O errors, and last night the library gave a -= PERM ERROR! =-
and after that - TOO MANY ERRORS! - in its display.

The RS/6000 that the 3584 is connected to was installed with an mksysb of a
different type RS/6000. The TSM database was restored from a backup of our
production server. The IBM representative said that it could be a problem
that the drive and library firmware versions of our production system are
different from the firmware versions of the test system, and that this
could be the cause of all the errors.

Hi *SM-ers!
We have a 3575-L32 library. About a week ago the library was unavailable due
to a broken drive (drive 1 which is also the library control path). The
power board was replaced and everything looked fine afterwards.
Since then, every now and then drives go offline after the following error:

ANR8446I Manual intervention required for library 3575LIB-R1.

Unrecoverable drive failures on drive RMT5 (/dev/rmt5); drive is now taken

I tried everything. Deleting the drives from AIX, purging the SAN Data
Gateway device database and rescan the SCSI interface, nothing seems to
work.
I checked Appendix D for ASC=2C, ASCQ=00. The only line I can find is:
0x2C 0x00 Command sequence error.
I'm lost
Any help will be VERY much appreciated!

Re: Help!!!!!!

2002-10-24 Thread Burak Demircan
Hi,
This seems that an unexpected thing occured to your server. I would try to
increase my maintenance level 4.2.2.x
Or at least check 4.2.1.0 patch level if something close to it is there.
One of my server is 4.2.2.13 for enough time and there is no problem.
By the way your DB usage percent is high. I would increase it not the be in
urgent situations.

And i also suspect that your DB is full now or in a situation that even a small
new data to it crashes it.
Try to add 10-20 mbs to your DB and log volumes (CHECK your log also)

Abstract

Error description
TSM Server V4.2.1 core dumps with ANR7837S Internal error

ANR7833S Server thread 1 terminated in response to program abort
ANR7833S Server thread 2 terminated in response to program abort
.
The LOCKCYCLE02 indicates that the problem is related to
transactions between the storage agent and TSM server. TSM
set a waiter flag in the lock request. Situations can occur
where the lock request is aborted. The abort causes a
LOCKCYCLE02 problem because the deadlock detector
woke up and went looking for waiters. Since there is a small
window between when the abort code signals the lock waiter
(because the mutex is released to allow the receiver to
respond), this allowed the deadlock detector to start looking
for deadlocks. Since the request had been satisfied by being
aborted, there were no locks being waited on (but the flag was
still set). Hence, TSM aborted because there was a waiter not
waiting on anything.

Local fix
Set the RESOURCETIMEOUT value in dsmserv.opt to a higher
timeout value. (See the administrator reference for more
information.) Higher timeout value should allow the locke waiter
flag to clear.
.
Apply fixtest 4.2.1.6 to resolve this problem.

Problem summary

* USERS AFFECTED: This effect users of Tivoli Storage *
* Manager version 4.2.1 and above on AIX, *
* NT, SUN, HP and MVS. *

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The TSM server aborts with the *
* following *
* abort codes: TMLOCK011, TXNLOCK16 and *
* LOCKCYCLE02 *

* RECOMMENDATION: Install PTF or PATCH when available. *

The problem is that the a lock request is aborted by the
resource manager. The resource manager does not remove the
waiter from the list of waiters. When the transaction is
aborted (TXNLOCK16), deadlock detector looks for a deadlock
(LOCKCYCLE02) or a the next
waiter is being granted the lock (TMLOCK011), the server abends.

Problem conclusion
This problem has been corrected.

Circumvention
The current workaround this problem is to prevent the resource
manager from aborting lock requests. This can be done by
setting the RESOURCETIMEOUT in the DSMSERV.OPT file to a
higher value like 100. The option applies to all TSM servers
and storage agents even though it is documented only for
Windows.

Hi TSMers

We have six Solaris machines that are in the DMZ that we need to backup
with our internal TSM server. At present, as far as I'm aware the clients
poll the server. This is of course a security risk. I'm sure this may have
been touched on in other discussions, but it's something I'm new to. Can
anyone tell me how make it so that the Server polls the clients. Is this a
simple procedure or something more complex.

Many thanks in advance for any help

Hi,
We have same problem on our environment. I'm still searching real solution,
but I solved some of nodes wich are still working as regular. Many problemly
node
occured after TSM client update (v4.x to 5.1.1.0).
my way as follows;
- remove the scheduler service
- uninstall complete old TSM client,
- clean the registry entries
- install the new TSM client
- recreate the service with dsmcutil command.
- also check the environment settings for DSM_CONFIG and DSM_DIR.
this is not a solution but sometimes it works :)

Now, periodicaly, when the 24 hours is up on a tape that has been

Normally live connections and their schedules seem as Started in

Merhaba Burak
An ODBC driver allows you to use a relational database product such as SQL
to query the database and display the results. Client installation does not
set include everything we need. You have to install API and ODBC
separately.

Hi TSM Guys,

I have a customer who moves volumes from a primary storage pool to an
offsite location by setting the volumes to UNAVAILABLE. The storage
pool's migration threshold is set to 100% for spacerclamation to be
prevented. What do I have to consider if I want to manually start space
reclamation on the unavailable volumes?
Will it be enough to just check-in the volumes, change their access to
ReadWrite, and then start the space reclamation by lowering the reclamation
threshhold gradually?

Thanx a lot

I would like to upgrade from 4.1.2.0 to 4.2.2.3 (and eventually to 5.1 when
we can get all the clients off 4.1).  I have a 4.2.0 install CD for the
server which will run on AIX 4.3.  From what I can tell I must install the
4.2 CD (do I need to put 4.1 maintenance on too before doing this?), then
install 4.2.1, then 4.2.2 then the patch for 4.2.2.3.  I can't find the
4.2.1 code out on the web to download it, only the 4.2.2.  Everything I
read seems to point to the fact that 4.2.1 would be installed before
install 4.2.2.  Can anyone verify this or tell me where I can download 4.2.1.

Thank you,

Diana

Got to admit I've been wondering about this myself. I've a 3584 library with
10 LTO drives that has been in service since September of last year. I've
got three cleaning tapes in the library, I move 130 GB of data per day --
and I haven't seen a cleaning tape used yet. I know the drives and tapes are
supposed to be self-cleaning, but this is almost to good to be true.

OTOH, I haven't run into any errors that indicate dirty drives. . .

IBM LTO libraries clean themselves; you shouldn't be using
 TSM to schedule
cleanings. Set your tape drives to CLEANFREQ=NONE and RTM at

 http://www-1.ibm.com/support/manager.wss?rt=4org=ssgdoc=5700
01038aid=1

The trick is that you have to insert the cleaner cartridge into the library
through the I/O station on the door of the library by using the MOVE MEDIA
command that you run from the front panel of the library. (Not to be
confused with TSM's MOVE MEDIA command.)

Burak,

As far as I understand it, the reclamation of offsite copy pool carts is not
a DRM function, reclamation is a standard part of TSM where a new tape is
produced locally that consolidates the carts offsite that are partly full.
The thing that DRM does for you is to manage the movement of which carts to
send offsite and which ones to bring back because they have been reclaimed.
I think that's right.

John.

Hi,
I am trying to understand DRM concept especially the reclamation part.
As the volumes become FULL they will be reclaimed when the data is low
(define in pool's RECLAIM value)
even if they are offsite copies. The primary pool volumes onsite will be
used
and
reclaimed EMPTY copy pool volumes will be returned.

Now my point comes. I have a schedule to backup primary pool every day to
copy pool. I have one FILLING volume everyday to send to offsite. Then,
there
will
be 20 volumes offsite (with FILLING status, and very little data on it)
What is
the DRM's solution
to reclaim such volumes? Is it to bring them onsite and use  MOVE DATA
command?

Hi, Burak.

The Admin Guide, in Chapter 9, Managing Storage Pools and Volumes, the
section Reclaiming Space in Sequential Access Storage Pools Reclamation
for Copy Storage Pools Reclamation for Offsite Volumes explains what
happens.  It's on page 156 of my Admin Guide 4.2 for AIX.

It basically says that for onsite volumes, reclamation usually happens when
status=FULL and when the percent reclaimable is greater than the stgpool's
reclamation percentalge.  For volumes with access=OFFSITE, it doesn't
bother with the Full part, it just compares the pct_reclaim.

I hope this answers your question.

On our well-behaved and moderately loaded system, I am not seeing a
problem with anything in v4.2.2.2 (AIX 4.3.3). However, on the more
'abused' systems, ones that are constantly migrating and have users
on them all the time, the expiration hangs whenever there is a
migration, reclamation or move data going on. Simultaneous expiration
and migration wasn't a problem on the well-behaved server.

I am letting one run with a migration right now to see if it
eventually resolves itself (deadlock?). Right now, it's going on
15 minutes and has locked up the other migration process. I'm not
sure if backups to the disk pool are affected yet. At 30 minutes or
so, I'll halt the server, restart and call the problen in.

private volumes

2002-05-13 Thread Burak Demircan

Hi,
How can I determine expired volumes to check-in  or private volumes that has no
data in
them? I ask this because I sometimes can not follow-up expired volumes so I can
not easily
find which ones were expired and should be check-ed in to my library. This also
includes
check-ed in private volumes that no data in them (can be changed to scracth)
Any ideas to automize these things other than DRM?

How should I expect transferred data after TDP comes? Now 10 GB transferred

The Scheduler service should be set to MANUAL startup. You should change it
to /autostart:no /startnow:no. The CAD service should be the only one
running. When a schedule request comes in, the CAD service will start the
/CADSCHEDNAME: service. Just like it does for the Web client interface
requests..it starts the TSM Agent REMOTE service.

They are being expired. Depends on your retention policies as to how
long this file will remain inactive before it is actually deleted from TSM.

The Sent, I believe means that the info has ben sent. Look at the
timestamp. All this happens in one second. Could you send 3 GB in
one second? The size is the size of the last file of this name that was
deleted, is the way I think it works.

client acceptor question

2002-05-09 Thread Burak Demircan

Hi,
Sorry if this is a stupid question. I am using scheduler
service for my clients for a long time and I do not have too much
trouble with them. Today I read that Tivoli recommends to use client acceptor.
Some of my clients have limited memory so using it can help me.
(or at least I want to use it)

I tried to use it on my client and installed the service (client
acceptor with managedservices schedule option) but the backup never started.

Now I am confused with this 3 services: scheduler, client acceptor and remote
agent. Can anybody tell me simply what are their purposes briefly?

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question for you

I am about to delete all of the promary disk storage pools for a
resizing and re-placement exercise.

IBM have given me their recommendations as:-

1. Backup stgpool.
2. Update lo mig and Hi mig to 0 to migrate everything to tape.

Now, am I right in saying that option 2 is un-necessary, as this data
should already reside on tape anyway (as it would have been backup up
sometime when a backup stgpool was taken)?.

 Hi,

I am using subfile on my windows nt clients but I am confused with
include.subfile option.

Isn't the following options enough for subfile or should I explicitly define
every path to subfile?

subfileb yes

subfilecachep d:\cache     (of course i exclude this path from backup)

subfilecaches 1024

Now, should I add such definitions even though I put those paths to my include
list?

and problem solved.
Hope this helps everybody.

This error is probably device class related or there is an error in your
library configuration.

Make sure you can use the device class you are referring to.

Try using the drive for other use, backup, copy storage pool e.g.

database problem (resolved)

2002-04-19 Thread Burak Demircan

Hi Everybody,
I solved my problem about TSM database which seems small but occupies big size.
The solution was following:

I  create /dev/mt0   device for my 8mm external tape (DO NOT USE things like
/dev/rmt0 like you see on AIX--- lsdev -Cc tape ).
Because people said that manual libraries are defined just in this way (I didnt
know because I see automated ones)
Later I used the following commands:

./dsmserv unloaddb dev=8mmclass scratch=yes
./dsmserv loadformat 1 /adsm/recovery_log/reclog.dsm 3
/adsm/database/datafull1_m /adsm/database/datafull2_m /adsm/database/adsm_db09
./dsmserv loaddb dev=8mmclass vol=mbt2

Now my database is defragmented. And the utiliy I see on q db result is just
as
I expected.

In your case the assigned db space is equal to te available space,
therefore you need to reduce the db before you delete the db volume.

For example, if you are going to delete 200MB db volume:

reduce db 200

del dbvol full path and volume name

Burak,

You have assigned all the database space available to the TSM Server. You
have to reduce the database size at least up to the size of the volume you
want to delete. When you use Delete dbvolume volume_name command the data
already existing in that volume then automatically get moved to the other
volume. The bottom line is that you have to reduce equivalent size of the
assigned database space before deleting the volume. Reduce the Database
volume using this command,

REDUCE DB SIZE_IN_MEGABYTE

Burak,

In that case, you have to unload the database and then reload it using
dsmserv unloaddb and dsmserv loaddb commands. So that your database is
reorganized and takes minimum space to distribute itself. I hope, after
doing unload and load database you will enough database space to reduce and
then delete the database volume as per your wish.

Why dont you think of backupsets? They do not require database usage and easy

Just create backupset at the end each of period (year or month) and send them

Bill,

Your arguments are excellent, and I have one large client dealing with the
health
records issue --- they need to save patient records for 32 years;  we are
liking
the export solution, once a year, for those nodes (in order to control TSM
db
size) -- and, continue storing their data in archive storage so we have
access to
all versions generated, then (AFTER THE FACT) deleting extra versions from
each month --- save 2 or 3, delete the rest from archive storage, using a
smart
script in concert with the dba's technique of naming the files being
stored.

However I only know ONE (simple) way to accomplish the desired, stated
results ---
month-end snapshot kept for X months
or years;  ie, a backupset of the desired file systems on specific nodes.
The limitation
of this solution is it only captures files in backup storage;  you need a
different
answer for database backups stored in archive storage -- my DBA's love
using
archive storage, and I have no argument against it, as they only care
about
time
(have no need or interest in counting versions, etc), and they must save
daily
backups for 4-14 days, weekly's for 6 weeks, monthly's for 6-15 months,
etc.

If you have a method that allows you mark the currently active versions
of
backup
files with a different retention than others, I think it would be new news
to most of us...
please share.

Thanks,

There is a good reason it keeps coming up: legitimate business
 requirements.

The suits (auditors, IRS, corp counsel, HIPAA, etc) demand to be able to
be able to reproduce any datum at given intervals for given durations.
Most often, that translates to restoring files that may change every day
to month end state for somewhere between 1 and 7 years.  Sometime they
can identify the kinds of data they want, but it is expensive to
accurately identify the list of all files/directories required, so
usually
you get a vague wave to save everything.  And of course, it's their
data, not yours, they have a right to keep as much as they want. Telling
them that TSM doesn't support their requirement just invites other
software vendors in the door since *they* handle this particular
 requirement with ease (on paper).

The number of days you can reasonably keep in an incremental backup
usually doesn't extend to forever.  Archives sometimes don't cut it,
either in their traditional form or the instant form.  You can't stand
to
move that much data or use that many tapes - that's why you went
incremental forever in the first place.  I really just to do some
operation that marks the current active version with a longer guaranteed
retention, without changing the retention of anything else.

I don't want to restart the perennial discussion of truly long term
archival storage.  It's reasonable to expect a backup system to maintain
internal compatibility for 7 years, and there are techniques for
migrating
 the data to newer media.

Just my 5 cents worth (inflation).

Be very carefull with the EX=YES. There is a status of an event of '(?)'
that doesn't show as an exception. This condition can occur when a backup
schedule starts for a node, and then due to either the client crashing or a
networking issue the connection is dropped and never re-established within
the DURATION of the event. The status is '(?)'. There is an APAR open to
have meaningful status's instead of the '(?)', but for now this doesn't show
as an EXCEPTION.

We got bit big-time at a client of our where they out-sourced the entire TSM
operation to us. They were having failures, but they were not showing on our
EX=YES report. They were not happy campers! I'm still having a hard time
sitting! :-)

We ended up writing some PERL code to parse the Q EV client events and
reporting on anything that isn't COMPLETED.

This behavior started somewhere in the 4.1.x patch levels. So, just be
careful relying on the EX=YES to give you everything that failed.

ANS1312E Server media mount not possible

2002-04-15 Thread Burak Demircan

I sometimes get the following error message in client schedule logs.
I am using copying data to my tape pools only from a migration from my disk
pool.
Now, I suspect a node option :MAXNUMMP  This option is 1 for all of my
nodes (35 nodes) Can it be due to MAXNUMMP option? Is it logical to make this
value  zero (0)
and forbid any node to acquire a drive.

I am using TSM 4.2.1.15 on AIX 4.3.3 on F80
Clients are Windows NT/2000 and version is 4.2.1.32
I have 3583 LTO library with 3 drives.

I am running reclamation for a copy pool and there are two tapes in the

I brought the tapes back from the vault and tried to do a MOVE DATA, but
when I try this I get the message:  ANR2209W Volume 483401 contains no

Which leads me to believe that there is information on the tape.  I have
even also tried to delete the information off of the tape and that doesn't
work either.  I don't know what else to do to get these tapes to scratch.
Any suggestions??  Thanks!!!

We also have a 3583 LTO with 60 cartridges (advertised) capacity plus 12 I/O
slots and have seen this multiple times before.

If you call Tivoli or IBM hardware support, their answer is to shut
everything down and restart. On initialization the system will correct
itself, and it does.

The problem is, as you use the system it tends to loose slots. We have
been running our 3583 for almost a year and I can count on one hand the
times that we have been able to use all 60 slots.

Since we are reaching capacity and need all 60 slots, plus some other issues
(See results of adsm.org search results for 3583) we have opened a crit sys
ticket which has resulted in a firmware upgrade for the changer, library,
and all drives in our system in addition to a complete cartridge holder
change for each internal 6 pack cartridge holder to a slightly bigger slot
type. The new cartridge holders were developed to accept a wider range of
LTO manufacture's tapes.

We will see if this helps.

I am not sure what you mean by drive shortcut. How do you create this?

I am not aware of this problem. Can you please provide a step-by-step
recreate scenario, i.e. how to create the drive shortcut, and how to
reproduce the problem? In addtion, please provide a drwtsn32.log file
showing the crash. To do this, you will need to:

a) Configure Dr. Watson. Run drwtsn32.exe. In the configuration dialog,
make sure the following items are checked:

- Dump Symbol Table
- Dump all Thread Contexts
- Append To Existing Log File
- Visual Notification

Also make sure that Number of Instructions is set to at least 20.

After verifying these settings, click OK.

b) Configure Dr. Watson as the default debugger. To do this, run the
following from an OS prompt:

   drwtsn32 -i

Recreate the problem. When the crash occurs, make sure to record the
information in the pop-up, including the error type (i.e. access
violation) and, most important, the address. Be sure to provide support
the Send the pop-up information, drwtsn32.log file, and recreate scenario
to me, and I will see what I can see.

Please be aware that I will probably ask you to also open a problem report
with IBM support, as the diagnosis may be beyond the scope of what I can
do on this informal support basis.

offsite backup

2002-03-07 Thread Burak Demircan

Hi,
How can you manage offsite backups without DRM?
I have just ideas in mind but I have lack of experience.

Is the following right way

first day
1) backup the nodes
2) backup copy pools to offsite copy pools
3) backup the database
4) take database backup and copy pools to offsite
5) expire the database backups previous than x days. (for example x=7)

next day
1) backup the nodes
2) return some copy copy pool volumes that are not filled as FULL
3) return expired old database volume of the day x+1 as scratch volume
3) backup copy pools to offsite copy pools
4)backup the database
5) take database backup and copy pools to offsite
6) expire the database backups previous than x days. (for example x=7)

.etc.

search for the dsm.opt and dsm.sys in your system incase you are
using different option files other than you believe to be right one

Hi all, we have changed our IP for the AIX/TSM server. We back up 38
Novell/Unix nodes and
all of them are fine. We also back up the AIX/TSM server as well. It is not
working. I
have changed the IP in the dsm.sys file to the new IP address. Below is the

we receive from TSM. Thanks for the help!

Hi Burak!
Remember that TSM reads the exclude and include statements from the bottom
up, so change it into:

Include c:\adsm.sys\...\* NTCLASS
Include d:\...\* NTCLASS
Exclude *\...\*
Domain c: d:
