Why all this GARBAGE WARE for one single app?

2023-11-25 Thread Mark Dm
I am trying to install gedit on mac , installed macports, then the xcode
requirements rand the command to install gedit. Now about 209 minutes later
I am still seeing GARBAGE like GstreamerXXX and GstreamerYYY still
installing . THIS IS NUTS! I NEVER ASKED TO INSTALL GSTREAMER. I know there
are dependencies but how can gstreamer be a dependency for a text editor?

WTF now it is installing something called "yelp"

I remember now I tried MacPorts years ago and ended up having to reformat
my Mac to get all the speed back after the couple of apps I installed. I
regret trying it again and thing it is all a bunch of GARBAGE

Is this juist a method by which you can install garbageware onto a mac for
unsuspecting users?

Thanks Laine and Andrew . I do believe that yadif=1 is what I am looking
for. After googling it I see so many others that express their love for it
so that sounds right!

Thanks

Its NOT Telecine. It is Digital Video 8 video at 27.97 FPS
I am looking specifically for the setting that derives the 59.94FPS from
the 27.97 FPS source with such beauty and without deinterlace.

[FFmpeg-user] Trying to remember how I did this.....

2023-10-04 Thread Mark Dm
I had some DVD Video that I had converted using ffmpeg some years ago. What
I did was converted NTSC DVD video (4x3) to 960x720 @59.94 FPS and the
result was incredible. I had found a forum some time later where another
user claimed he had done the same and he too had incredible results. The
result as I recall is way better than deinterlacing and I still have some
of the videos I upscaled this way. . It essentially creates a frame
for every field and if I pause the video I may see a slight blur but no
scan lines. I also see no scan lines while video is playing

I do remember that I did it all with ffmpeg command line conversions. It
does NOT use deinterlacing as that throws away half the resolution, and
results in visible scan lines. Instead it increases the frame rate by two
and I chose to upscale to 720P. As I recall I also did some PAL as well as
NTSC using the same method.

I am looking to recover this method if I can as I will be transferring a
bunch of Digital8 videos and want to do it the same way to create mp4 files
at 720P@59.94FPS

Any help appreciated

THanks

Re: [sane-devel] Canon LiDE70 support

I think also depending on what software you use to scan makes a big
difference some software has the ability to process the image according
to a defined preset or even auto mode. Seems to me I discovered much the
same on an old cannon scanner some years ago.

You say you are using "official driver" but if this scanner is WSD
compliant, then try installing SANE-AirScan. It will not hurt to try.

2022-03-11 Thread Mark Dm
I do not know how it works out for AirSane but with Twain2AirScan I have
tried using different ports for different scanners. I think that AirScane
uses different paths per scanner if I recall correctly.

Having tested multiple port based shares on the same IP address and I had
bad results. Clients like Mopria Android, OSX and other get VERY CONFUSED
and mix up names and icons. It seems that somewhere possibly in the eSCL
2.8 official specsI read that only a single scanner was allowed per IP. I
would get scanner icon A for scanners a and B. part of scanner A Name
would show on Scanner B .

Of course with the way Twain2AirScan shares the scanner a host system can
only share one Windows scanner. The other scanner I used for testing was
the other project on the scannershare.com site , running on a different
port.

[sane-devel] Asking for testers

2022-02-10 Thread Mark Dm
I have developed a solution of sharing a Windows Scanner via the eSCL
protocol. It is called Twain2AirScan. Although it is compatible with SANE
as a client via the SANE-AirScan back-end (not SANE-eSCL) ,it is not really
"SANE" .

Recently I added duplex ADF where before it had only simple ADF.
Unfortunately I have no Duplex ADF scanner.

So I thought this group might be a good place to look for anyone with
DUPLEX ADF Scanner that works on on WIndows that can help test this newest
version. You can test with a Linux, Android or macOS client, while using a
Windows Machine as a host. In particular I need to test Duplex ADF
(scanning both sides) so you would need a duplex ADF scanner.

You can find the download at http://scannershare.com its Called
Twain2AirScan

[sane-devel] s400w scanner "middle-ware" or "compatibility layer"

I posted here earlier the solution I made for several models of scanners
(based on s400w scanner) to work With Linux SANE-Airscan and Mac OS, with
the link to scannershare.com. Since then the web site was
completely renovated and several people tried to download it and got the
wrong file.

If any downloads were from users of this list, please try again , it has
now been fixed. My apologies for the error.

Till, I appreciate your suggestions. I recognize your name from this and
Printing Mail Lists. I know that you probably know well what you are
talking about. The problem is you are talking over my head. In fact I gave
up on putting anything on github because I am so stupid I do not understand
it . I know how to do what I do and that's about it.
I know I recently did a new install of Ubuntu and something I installed
was a Snap package. I have no idea what it even means and would have less
of an idea of what to do with it. Just like I want to Build an an Apple M1
binary for the s400w project which supposedly I can do on my Mac, but the
learning curve for Xcode and Snap together would detract so much from what
I already know how to do, I would get nothing more done on other scanning
related projects.

[sane-devel] New "SANE" driver, or sort of "Middleware"?

2022-02-03 Thread Mark Dm
Ok I have spent a few years making various versions of GUIs and tools for
s400w based scanners which include Century CPS-A4WF, Halo Magic Scanner,
ION AirCopy, ION AirCopy E-Post Edition, iScan Fly, Kaiser Baas WiFi Photo
& Document Scanner, Mustek iScan Air / S400W, Transcription Patri Kun A4
Wi-Fi Portable Scanner. Heretofore referred to collectively as s4000w.
Most of my work has been based around the command line driver for these
same units by Bastel
https://sites.google.com/site/bast3l78/s400w/main

More recently I have worked on Twain2AirScan to allow a Windows Twain or
WIA Scanner to be shared over the eSCL protocol.

Recently it came to mind to simplify one particular version of something I
had previously written. As the Bastel command line driver I use in other
projects handles communication to/from s400w scanner, and I had already
created an eSCL (AirScan) interface in PHP the new product is NOT a GUI it
is only an eSCL to Bastel s400 bridge. It receives and sends eSCL commands
on one side and on the other side sends and receives commands to/from the
s400w by way of the Bastel driver.

End result? The end result is with the SANE-Airscan backend (not to be
confused with the eSCL Back-end) these s400w scanners now become
compatible with not only SANE , but the same code runs on Mac OSX_64 (with
included Mac X86-64 Binary ) for native Mac scanning.

There are Linux Binaries for x86_32, x86_64, Arm32(Pi 2 & 3). Sorry I have
no M1 machine to make an M1 binary and cross-compiling seems daunting.

This will be added to my http://ScannerShare.com page with Twain2AirScan
that allows sharing a Windows TWAIN or WIA Scanner to eSCL/AirScan clients
like Mac or Linux, Android, or Linux (using SANE-AirScan) at
http://scannershare.com. For now however there is no direct link for the
new s400w product but you can get the file by requesting it at the bottom
of the page at http://scannershare.com Anyone with an s400w scanner and
Linux or MacX86_64 is encouraged to test, please.

To be clear this solution runs on Apache2 with PHP or other web server. PHP
handles all the translation to/from eSCL/BastelS400W. It runs fine on
'localhost' and even supports automatic scanner detection
via Bonjour..Avahi. It also simultaneously shares the scanner over your
entire network using eSCL/AirScan . You will need a dedicated WiFi
interface for the scanner, aside from whatever you use to connect to your
normal network/Internet.

[sane-devel] Anyone working on or interested in working on eSCL backend for SANE?

2019-06-12 Thread Mark DM
Hello inSANErs ,

I saw a post fro about a year ago where someone wanted to start a project
for an eSCL back-end for SANE on Google Summer of code. Did that go
anywhere?

As I have spent many months learning the ins and outs of AirScan eSCL
protocol , with much trial and error, I am interested in knowing if anyone
is working on a eSCL / Apple AirScan compatible back-end.

What I have done, I have done in PHP and I have no idea how to write a SANE
backend anyway. I have developed a strong enough grasp of the protocol at
this point to make a client communicate effectively.

I think this protocol is mature enough to know it is not going away too
soon, and may soon haunt Linux users if not adopted into SANE. In fact , it
would make the configuration of many network scanners Driverless and Plug
and Play if properly incorporating Bonjour/Avahi browse.

While on the subject of Driverless Plug and Play, I had some correspondence
with someone who has been writing WSD scanning code, and he is interested
in Making a WSD to eSCL bridge in python. As you can see this would open
the door to many new scanners and getting SANE going the direction that
CUPS has been going for years with "driverless" scanning. While mentioning
CUPS the CUPS web server would be the ideal place to host the eSCL xml on a
web server, if that is even possible.

I think the adoption of these standards in SANE is long overdue. I think it
has been about 9 years since Apple began to embrace eSCL and as I
understand it WSD has been supported in Windows even longer.

*About eSCL*
As I understand it, PWG (printer Working Group) defines a method of IPP
scanning , which is not WSD nor eSCL, Nor AirScan. eSCL, uses some of the
XML parameters defined by PWG like
Idle.
Airscan may well be a subset of the eSCL standard , which may not take
advantage of all features offered in current eSCL standards. The eSCL
standard allows the ability to put the heavy lifting on the client, like
the Image Capture app in OSX handling turning multiple pages into a single
PDF. Each page in reality is a single file it seems, even if the scanner is
capable of crating the multi-page PDF internally.

Here is some info I put together on how eSCL works . eSCL is all xml based.
https://gist.github.com/markosjal/79d03cc4f1fd287016906e7ff6f07136

*other notes*
It is worth noting that the Cross Platform program VueScan already
incorporates eSCL scanning, and detects those scanners automatically. It is
far less particular than OSX which actualyl does more checking than
VueScan. Viewscan will work even if the messages in XML are incorrect,
while OSX requires everthing to be right or a disaster is imminent (like
opening an infinite number of the same file without beng able to stop it!).

In my opinion there is also little need to support SANE over network when
an eSCL scanner is used as an eSCL/AirScan scanner is already networked .
Each computer on the LAN would already have direct access to the scanner.

I will take the opportunity here to also mention that if anyone on this
list has access to an Apple device and any eSCL/AirScan "driverless"
scanner, I could use more packet captures, to get better compatibility with
Apple devices.. You can send them to markosjal at the email with a G. I
prefer any of the formats supported in wireshark, but anything I can find a
way to read is okay

*DARE I SUGGEST?*
If SANE is to keep moving forward, in my opinion, SANE should consider
adopting all commuincation betweeen SANE clients/servers to a standard like
eSCL . I am working on a model of this that will incorporate SANE only by
command line, scanimage. On the SANE host is an Apache / PHP server (for
connecting the eSCL side) and command line "scanimage" on the scan server
side. I tried AirSane it seems to have its own issues, but does
consistently deliver images to OSX when it works. My project is pretty
rough at this point and even getting differenet behavior on preview app vs
Image Capture app in OSX Mojave . One of the advantages of using an XML
standard like eSCL is that it facilitates machine to Machine communication
regarless of the platform and is much easier to incorporate into embedded
applications. One can simply POST an XML file to scan whatever is on the
platen. The URL to the file is returned in a header, and in subsequent xml
responses when scanner is queried for ScannerStatus. The client, like OSX
(or your refrigerator, and do not ask me why) then simply downloads the
file. It seems too simple to NOT use it and opens up aworld of connectivity
between devices. Even if SANE followed the example of CUPS of using the PWG
IPP standard for network printing , then SANE might use the PWG IPP
Scanning standards. Any of them would be a step forward from where it is
now.

[sane-devel] Possible to make test backend to slow down?

2019-06-08 Thread Mark DM
I am testing using the test backend and have an issue in that it responds
much more quickly that a real scanner. I am working with making eSCL
compatibility and need to see if there is a way to slow it down so a
virtual scan takes more than a couple of seconds. This is the only way I
will be able to get status info during the process which is normal in eSCL
. Any ideas? It seems it would have delays written into it to really truly
simulate a scan.

Do both systems show the same USB ID for the scanner? If not you need to
use a tool that sets the mode of the USB device I believe it is called USB
Modeswitch.

Some devices rely on this to change the "personality" of the device by
changing the USB ID . This is commonly used in 3G USB dongles but I once
saw it used on something else.

see 201 Creater and Location http://IPADDRESS/result I was later informed
that the PHP code I was using needed to have a comma removed between 201

My headers being set

header( 'Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate' );
header( 'Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0', false );

Hi I am new to the list .

I have an issue which I believe to be an apache configuration issue

When I POST a file with CURL or android app I get 404 error however the
path exists.

As I understand It i do not need a handler to POST and the file should
appear. I am trying to replicfate AirScan/eSCL Protocol

I have tried numerous solutions from modifying .htaccess, php.ini and
apache2.conf.

Thanks in advance for any advice . More info follows

Currently I have

[sane-devel] How to make a custom app respond to SANE commands?

2019-02-03 Thread Mark DM
I have a custom app for a non SANE compatible scanner. I have looked around
the web to see what I can find aboy the SANE protocol used for network
scanning and have not found much.

I am pretty sure a SANE scanner server must advertise certain features to
SANE clients and that those messages are sent and received by some
standardized protocol.

It is this protocol I am looking to emulate.

Does anyone have an idea where to start?

Thanks

[sane-devel] Custom SANE Backend - Clarification

2019-01-21 Thread Mark DM
I wanted to clarify exactly what I meant about a Custom SANE backend in my
case.

I am not looking for a backend that connects via USB, Network, SCSI, nor
parallel. rather what I hope to attain is a back end that connects via
binary FILE.

I am looking for a backend solution that will execute a binary with
options, and the binary itself does all the communcation with the scanner.

I am not looking to execute any SANE command line , in fact I want to use
SANE frontend to execute a non-SANE command with options.

for instance when a SANE scan button is clicked the backend executes a
binary with options like resolution and file name
example:
myscanner 300 myfile.jpg

of course one might need to manually set options relevant to their scanner
and binary, and these options probably need to get passed on to SANE so
that SANE GUI displays relevant options for the scanner/binary. (Maybe
Apple AirScan returns these options when queried?)

I have seen numerous command line scanners that work outside of SANE. It
would seem logical that a generic back-end could be created for manual
configuration of options to be able to execute one of these binaries from
SANE.

I am actually surprised that there seems to be nothing available in this
regard and zero flexibility in the SANE structure to easily implement it.

here are two such projects that would beneft from this.

Apple Airscan compatible scanners:
https://github.com/kno10/python-scan-eSCL

Mustek s400w / Ion Aircopy / Halo Magic Scanner
http://bastel.dyndns.info/~public/s400w/

Each of these uses a binary (one is python) to access a scanner.

Re: [sane-devel] custom SANE backend

2019-01-20 Thread Mark DM
I looked at test.conf and some docs and found nothing about initiating a
scan with a third party command. That is the goal here to use a third party
command, not a USB, parallel, nor network interface

There are two such examples of command line scanner utilities that could
benefit from something like this

http://bastel.dyndns.info/~public/s400w/
and
https://github.com/kno10/python-scan-eSCL

you load the command line with the options according to the commands needs
based on what is selected in the GUI.

[sane-devel] custom SANE backend

2019-01-20 Thread Mark DM
I have a working linux command line utility that controls a scanner and all
functions.

I was wondering if anyone has made a "generic" backend for custom commands
to control a scanner.

the idea is to execute the command line utility with the options for the
scan.
for instance to scan using the executable utility called "myscanner" at 600
DPI, in color might execute from command line:

myscanner 600 color

of course other resolutions etc would change the options in the command.

Thanks, Mark

the point is that the master playback switch does not appear in the mixer

it can be unmuted with mixer. when muted with remote it can not be unmuted

That Master Playback Switch thingy _is_ a mixer control.

It should be visible in alsamixer (and other mixers) as Master.
 Is it?

I know the xbmc does a different mute because I programmed the xbmc
  mute on the remote .

I don't know about XBMC; does it allow any other action than switching
its internal mute state? Shouldn't you rather configure this in LIRC?

2013-07-29 Thread Mark DM
I am posting what I see ! Perhaps your interpretation is contradictory as
it appears to be with the alsa devs. The point being is that what I can
toggle with amixer and hardware mute on audigy or remote, is not available
in any mixer control! You can say they are contradictory however what I
need is to change the mute/unmute behavior to conform to the hardware mute
method such as I use amixer for. Amixer is the ONLY available unmute method
when hardware mute is used on Audigy or remote.

I know the xbmc does a different mute because I programmed the xbmc mute on
the remote . Even when deactivated or when not running xbmc the
aforementioned hardware mute buttons behave differently than a software
mute

I have also created situations where the hardware mute is off and the
software mute is on and visa versa

 These two statements are contradictory.

when I use the remotes mute function (which is also configured to send
a mute via XBMC), or the mute on Audigy unit itself, the mute
indicator on Audigy lights up. Unit can only be unmuted with amixer

The remote's and device's mute buttons work automatically. Unmuting
must be handled by some software that listens for these events.

Obviously, nothing is actually listening. Why do you think that XMBC
 is configured for this?

As far as I know, the only software that can handle the Audigy 2 NX's
 remote events is LIRC: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LIRC.
(Use driver alsa_usb and remote RM-1500.)

Must always mute with: amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 0
Then we can always unmute with: amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 1

Or just use amixer -c1 cset numid=5 toggle.

[Alsa-user] Soundblaster Audigy 2 NX- Still buggy after all these years

2013-07-26 Thread Mark DM
I have an old Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 NX that I would like to use it
and the bundled remote for XBMC. I have everything working except I have an
hardware mute button as well as mute on remote

I have never been able to program the remote in a way to get mute and
unmute to work. I believe there may be some interfaces missing in the ALSA
mixer/controls support, such as hardware mute status and Master Playback
Switch is clearly missing from the mixer. There is also no control for a
aster volume in the mixer , nor any kind of mute

when I use mute and unmute on logitech keyboard all is well except no
mute indicator lights on Audigy. I can then unmute normally with keyboard
(not with remote as this will then activate a different mute)

when I use the remotes mute function (which is also configured to send a
mute via XBMC), or the mute on Audigy unit itself, the mute indicator on
Audigy lights up. Unit can only be unmuted with amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 0
followed by amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 1

I suspect this second (hardware?) mute is differen tand probably done at
the hardware level and with Master Playback Switch, as compared to
keyboard mute.

can this get worked into the configuration as a quirk or something with the
driver for the Audigy 2 NX?

The following may be helpful

amixer controls shows among other items numid=5,iface=MIXER,name='Master
Playback Switch'

Must always mute with: amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 0

Then we can always unmute with: amixer -c 1 cset numid=5 1

Seems I have the solution but need to customize alsa somehow!

Can someone tell me which are the components that store the print

 1. If I browse \\server\(server and fax) and I configure properties, where
are the changes saved?

 2. When an end user configures the printer where does ther properties should

 3. If the domain/local Administrator changes the properties in the printer
on the client via settings | printers how does that change relate to

 4. In a working setup, is there a way to force the paper format *after* a

Re: [Samba] Update A Compiled Version

2012-12-25 Thread Mark DM
He could be using an older distro that never will have it in the
repos. I think the bigger question is how will he update it once an
update is released if he does compile it, and a I see it that remains
unanswered, as I too share the same question.

I never trust version X.00, as it is never long before the fixes make it X.01

I'm pretty new to compiling software, although I would rather compile my
own Samba 4.0.0 server rather than wait for it to become available in the
repositories of my distribution. How do you update compiled software. Like
if I compile and install Samba 4.0.0, and then 4.0.1 comes out, Is there a
way to update to that without starting from scratch and having to rebuild
 my domain? Thanks

Most (all?) Linux distributions include a compiled version of Samba as
part of the distriution's software repository. Check to see what your
 distribution makes available.

[Samba] NEED Windows 7 64 bit Postscript drivers

2012-12-21 Thread Mark DM
Alas I am having success on my third install. I am
however missing the Windows 7 64 Bit Postscript drivers. I have the 32
bit but have only one copy of windows that is 32 bit and use mostly
Linux
It would be greatly appreciated if someone could take them off of an
ENGLISH system, and zip and email them to me. They come from
\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_random-stuff.cab
the names are
ps5ui.dll
pscript.hlp
pscript.ntf
pscript5.dll
MUST BE Windows 7 English 64 bit system
Thanks much!

[Samba] Samba and CUPS pushing generic windows drivers

2012-12-20 Thread Mark DM
I have spent weeks battling with Samba and CUPS to get seamless
windows printing, and keep hitting bumps along the way

So far of two printers on a test systsm, and hp deskjet 920c and a PDF
writer on the CUPS machine , only one will export printer drivers
_
# rpcclient -U root localhost -c enumdrivers
Enter root's password:

[Windows NT x86]
Printer Driver Info 1:
Driver Name: [HP_DESKJET_920C]
_
# rpcclient -U root localhost -c enumprinters
Enter root's password:
flags:[0x80]
name:[\\LOCALHOST\]
description:[\\LOCALHOST\,HP_DESKJET_920C,HP DESKJET 920C]
comment:[HP DESKJET 920C]

flags:[0x80]
name:[\\LOCALHOST\]
description:[\\LOCALHOST\,,PDF]
comment:[PDF]

As you can see this is a problem. However I did not have this problem
on a previous installation I tried and ended up breaking.,

IN order to install the drivers for windows I had to add the last line
in the printer$ and printers section in the smb.conf below

My biggest issue is the following:
How do I get the driver for the PDF virtual printer to write out for
windows auto-download?

My second purpose follows and may negate all of this and it is is.
I also want to know why I can not install a generic postscript or PDF
driver auto-download that would apply for all printers as CUPS 1.61
allows these formats. It would seem to simplify point and print
printing to have one driver that applied to all printers rather than a
separate PPD for each .

On my current install there are files for HP DESKJET 920C.ppd. One of
the reasons I chose to go this route was for CUPS rendering. I know
that they will use standard postscript rendering at least because I
printed with a postscript driver to the HP previously with no printer
specific PPD

I would ideally lie to be able to install a printer in CUPS and have
it automatically available via SMB with a generic driver with no
printer specific ppd. I need this to be as idiot proof as possible!
I know that new cups printers on the Mac are automatically available
via samba when it is activated so it should be feasible to do that
part in linux as well. The bigger issue remains a gneric postscript or
pdf driver that applies to all printers.

Thanks

Mark
