Sure you do - you want to change the code that uses it, so that it does not anymore :-) this is in fact exactly what I want to catch, regression wise. Currently the only real way to catch these regressions is to re-profile the application regularly, and spot the obvious sillies - this (as we have seen) is by no means a reliable way of stopping things creep in. We get slower by mistake, all over the place. IMHO a component author should not make assumptions about when a component is needed ... ideally people would just follow that late-init paradigm while programming. Ideally, of course - however; in the stark light of day - we have had the whole database engine accidentally initialized during startup via some accidental change somewhere, that forced something to be inited earlier than it was expected to be, that causes a substantial performance problem - and this is by no means an isolated case. Having a decent set of assertions to ensure that code doesn't creep into the startup path would be extremely useful. The assertion could be as simple as just printing something on the console under Unix; This should not happen filename or something, it doesn't have to abort() - just that would bring it to people's attention quickly. So this would help not at all. Or should ISA(...) make the == quick check in general first, assuming most ISA calls match because of == ? Again - that is not going to help. Having determined, after some work, that it is fundamentally unreasonable to load or execute a given chunk of code during startup [ eg. a spell-checking / dictionary service - which is only valid at idle ], and done the work to ensure that it is no longer loaded by accident: we want to ensure that if by some accident [ no-one is aware of all the side-effects their code changes introduce ] it is re-introduced, that we quickly catch and remove the performance regression. Actually, this could be achieved by simply extending e.g. the Uno Reference class to support on-demand instantiation, the moment an object is needed it becomes created ... But the problem is that, whatever you do here, code will be added that inadvertently does ~something on startup; whatever you do. This does not address the issue, that anybody may retrieve an object to do something, which could be done later. Right - which is ultimately the real problem; most people don't create UNO object references just for fun ;-) The overall underlying problem is the fact, that the start-up has been programmed explicitly, by sequence of statements creating this, initializing that, all under the assumption, that the author knows the dependencies. Is this not the very nature of programming ? even in some abstract asynchronous system we would want to discover and exclude slow things from the initialisation sequence by re-ordering events etc. I think every reasonable experienced engineer does know how to do this start-up thing right, though most just try to fetch some low hanging fruits, avoiding some bigger refactorings. My experience is the opposite; that despite work, more and more cruft creeps back into the startup sequence, and that it gets slower over time. We may want to utilize the suggested helper assertions, though I feel / fear, that this hack would never become removed again ... Why is it a hack to have a clearly defined startup state from the beginning of Desktop:Main up to 'Execute' during which time, we tag code that we know to be expensive, to ensure it doesn't occur there ? Surely this is just adding a valuable annotation to the code, that neither the compiler, nor programmer can easily deduce. I was having a somewhat surreal experience trying to debug soffice.bin
having linkoo'd - and it crashing on start:

So - presumably we only initialise the UCB correctly on the path with
the splash-pipe :-)
...
It turns out with the gtk+ plugin that we try to load an image for the window
icon for the splash screen [ arguably we shouldn't be even trying to do that ].
And for some reason, we do this before the UCB is initailized (these days) - and
this causes us to crash.
One way of fixing it attached.

Also, the existing gio code needs more work testing. I guess that (perhaps) ties into long Solaris release schedules and so on. Great catch - unfortunately there are a number of other places doing just the
same thing; eg. in the parent class:
svtabbx.cxx also has two instances of this construct:

Perhaps a better question is -- why is there a header there with no columns in
it ? it seems to me that returning 0 from GetColumnCount is prolly closer to the

Anyhow - most of the helpex slowness it turns out is in the latter stage of XML output, but hopefully the win will help other i18n tools. Perhaps I'm mis-understanding something, is it the case that the UnsafeBridge mutex is part of the new Kay Ramme threading framework ? if so, is it the case that almost whenever an UNO method is invoked on some code, that this lock is taken ? eg. if the configmgr wants to use the ServiceManager to instantiate a new service - then this code is deemed not-thread-safe, and thus the one-big-mutex is taken ? If so - we need to put configmgr inside that same appartment; since clearly it uses components outside it's scope and visibility to do (eg.) I/O - or even simple things like activating a service ;-) Of course, we can still leave the UnoApiLock construct against a time when the subsystems that configmgr relies on are thread-safe: the service manager, the explicit external services we use are: com.sun.star.io.DataOutputStream com.sun.star.xml.sax.Writer com.sun.star.script.Converter com.sun.star.comp.stoc.OServiceManagerWrapper none of which looks like it should be too horrific. Presumably things like the UCB and sax code are still viewed as thread-safe not in the global apartment ? Ultimately - it's a simple lock ordering problem as Stefan points out. Code we call assumes that this UnsafeBridge mutex can be taken, but we have the UnoApiLock; while other code assumes that the UnsafeBridge mutex is already held and that we can then take the UnoApiLock. Ultimately IMHO, the best fix is to make these locks truly independent by killing all takes of the UnsafeBridge mutex in the (fairly basic surely) code that configmgr itself uses. If this goes up-stream, it will require more work, to allow ooo-build to override patches, and (I think) layer a smaller apply file on top of this - but that shouldn't be too much work. Urgh - I guess we would also want a way to disable up-stream applied patches (out of our control) too.
