Re: Remedy for facilities management
This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but we have a Remedy application that is used to control access to our data center. - Employees and vendor personnel that are pre-authorized are stored in the system. A periodic review of their status is triggered by workflow. - Each request to enter the data center is submitted into the application. It includes the area(s) they need to visit, which provides the information that our Security dept. needs to enable their access key for only those areas. - Each access request must be accompanied by a work order (Remedy) that describes the work that will be done. - Is integrated with our Remedy based change management application. - Requests are entered by our data center operations team. The security dept. becomes aware of new requests and keeps tabs on who is in the D.C. by monitoring a Remedy dashboard form. No manual hand-offs between Operations and Security are required. If you can confirm that you do use remedy for some or all of these purpose, it would be much appreciated; the driver is that we need to give our Facilities group some assurance that if they were to go down this path, they would not be alone, and that this has successfully been done by other organizations. We are particularly interested in knowing of organizations with a large multi-building campus as well as sites in various countries that use the system to manage Facilities work. We also used to have this problem quite frequently and it always affected different users each time. The only workaround we had was to flush the MT cache, stop Tomcat on all of our web servers, restart Tomcat, and flush the cache again. Re: Development Cache Mode revisited
Yep. If anyone is interested, p171 7.5 Config. When object definition changes are made to the administrative server in a server group, other members of the group can be notified either by a signal or by a database posting. With signaling, other servers are notified of changes immediately, and there is no delay in resynchronization or updating definitions. The database method reduces server activity when object definition changes are communicated between servers and is an effective way to reduce the number of cache reloads when a series of changes are made, but there is a delay before other members of the server group pick up the changes. By default, AR System uses a combination of these methods for different types of updates in a server group. Server definition changes such as changes to forms, active links, filters, and escalations, as well as user group changes, are handled by database posting. All other changes, such as Alert registration, DSO activity, and so on, are handled by signaling. However, you can configure the server to use signaling for all changes including server object changes by following the procedure in this section. The configuration file setting Server-Group-Signal-Option tells the server whether to use arsignald for all signals, rather than using a combination of signaling and database posting. If set to true (T), server object changes are communicated by arsignald instead of database posting. Use this option if you don?t want any delay in communicating server object changes to other servers in the server group. It probably wouldn?t be too hard to find if needed. In a nutshell, though, each of the servers in the server group periodically checks to see if the schema has been updated (or if new groups have been added, etc.), and builds a new copy of the cache from the database when they see that it has changed. If I recall correctly, the polling frequency may be able to be configured in ar.conf, and it doesn?t immediately update once it notices a change. Rather, it will wait until something like two successive polling cycles have passed without additional changes occurring before rebuilding its local cache. That way, it?s less likely to do an update in the middle of a set of changes. If Dev Cache Mode is turned off on the other servers in the group, and users are logged into those servers, users will continue to use the old copy of the cache until they log out and back in again. Note that this means that, depending on the frequency of changes (including adding new Remedy group or ITSM Support Groups), this can be a significant source of memory usage on the server. We have run out of memory and had the server crash in the past due to creating several new Support Groups throughout the day, and each one causing yet another copy of the cache to be held in memory for the people that logged in since the last time it was updated. This is even more of an issue if people don?t log out correctly (e.g., if they?re using the mid-tier and simply close their browser window without logging out), as the system will NOT log them out automatically, even though it will eventually release their write licenses. This causes old copies of the cache to be retained for longer periods than necessary. The old copies of the cache will be held in memory until everyone that was using that particular copy log out of Remedy; it will then release it, and you memory usage will drop. Like I said, that?s from memory and recent experience. I do recall reading it in one of the guides in the standard documentation, so you should be able to find the specifics if you want them. I have seen this sort of thing happen when you make code changes in production with Development Cache Mode off. Note that there are some apps which cause this to happen, the worst offender seems to be Service Level Management but I don't know if RKM does this. Re: ARPlugin.exe growing uncontrollably
I did a server reboot on Sunday at 1:15 pm the file was at 20,848 K. Today at 8:39 am it was at 66,484 K. No one has done any code changes since the reboot. We do have RKM but we don't have SLM installed. The only other correlation we have seen is that when our system locks up someone has been doing quite a bit of work in the ReportCreator screen. Re: Assignment Engine Dying
We had issues with that a while back, and what was odder was that we weren't even using it; we had Remedy configured not to use the assignment engine. If I recall correctly, our issue had to do with old, bad data stuck in the Application Pending form combined with assignment engine rules that had been disabled in the Assignment Engine Administration Console. It seems that someone had disabled some rules in an attempt to stop getting tickets auto-assigned without understanding how to simply turn off the assignment engine. Then, when the assignment engine tried to process certain requests in Application Pending, it wasn't finding a matching rule and was crashing because of that. In fact, now that I think about it, I think it was still trying to autoassign tickets for some reason, even though we had configured it not to, so we ultimately just commented that process out of armonitor.cfg so that it simply didn't run in the first place. I don't know if that could be related to what you're seeing, but if you think it might, I can try to dig up the details again for you if you'd like. Re: Assignment Engine Dying
Aside from the error at the top, this looks similar to what we saw - it entered the processing loop and then simply died without any indication of what the error was. It took us a while to figure out what it was on our side, but it boiled down to disabled rules in the AE administration console in our case. $GROUPS$ does not include Assignee, Assignee Group, or other dynamic groups
If I am a member of a dynamic group based on field 112 (or AssignedTo for that matter)-- why doesn't $GROUPS$ reflect this group? I tried making a AL and a Filter to display $GROUPS$ in a field on display and/or GET, but it does not include these groups. How else can one query a form for $GROUPS$ LIKE %4;% OR $GROUPS$ LIKE %7;% (Assignee and Assignee Group, respectively) In other words, how can I query a form for records where I am in these specific dynamic groups? There might be several other custom dynamic groups that let me see a record, so using permissions alone as an alternative to querying is not useful beyond basic use cases. Simple example: You have read-only access to certain records because you are a Vice President and you like to know what is going on-- however you want to filter out those records and only see records where you are assigned to do something, such as approve a specific request. So you query by Assigned To Group field to only show records where a group you are in is Assigned to do the task. Does that use case make sense? Does using groups make sense for this? Sorry if this seems whiny, I am at a loss as to why this is so difficult, I thought groups would make things like this easier! Do I really need to break up $GROUPIDS$ into pieces using an AL Guide and build a really long query string? end result being something like... (for 4 groups 501-504).. 'Assigned To Group' LIKE %501;% OR 'Assigned To Group' LIKE %502;% OR Assigned To Group' LIKE %503;% OR Assigned To Group' LIKE %504;% Obviously the above seems to be the wrong way to do things... but I'll do it if it is the only way. Re: $GROUPS$ does not include Assignee, Assignee Group, or other dynamic groups
Brien, $GROUPS$ and $GROUPIDS$ are keywords. First, keywords are context sensitive to the environment not to a specific ticket. Second, these keywords are the list of groups to which you have been assigned membership. You cannot be assigned membership to implicit groups. These are groups where there is transient participation on a per-ticket basis. These keywords will be the same for your login (unless your group assignment changes while you are logged in). They do not vary on a per-entry basis. Just think about the performance ramifications if the system had to dynamically recaculate the value of a keyword on every entry during the middle of a search operation! You are using the wrong technique to try and perform the operation you are suggesting. Permissions grant you access to things. They do not perform assignment. Now, sometimes you may have an assignment field that is also defined as a field that grants access. But they are two different concepts. So, permissions will only let you see entries you should be seeing. Now, you want to subset those entries to get only ones that match a criteria. If you want to search for entries where the user is the Assignee, you have to look for the LOGIN NAME of the user not any group data. The Assignee field is a USER NAME field. So, 'Assignee' = $USER$ is the type of qualification to find records that the user is assigned. Next, comes the Assigned to Group field. In general, when an application is set up, a field like this contains A SINGLE group name (or group number). You generally don't assign something to three groups. If it happens to be a name, $GROUPS$ LIKE % + 'Assigned Group' + % is a candidate search criteria. You do need to be careful about this type of comparison if you have groups with overlapping names (like Admin and Full Admin where you may get an incorrect match for Admin). If it happens to be an ID, $GROUPIDS$ LIKE %; + 'Assigned Group' + ;% is a candidate search criteria. Note the preceeding and trailing semicolon to gaurantee proper matching as the syntax of the GROUPIDS field is ;#;#;#; so that every group number has a preceeding and trailing semicolon so you don't have issues or risks with partial matches. ;77; matches ONLY group 77 and not 177 or 4077 or 777. Now if you really do assign things to a list of groups and each user can be in a list of groups, you will have to produce more involved qualifications where you parse the GROUPS or GROUPIDS keyword values apart and perform searching like you mention -- but that is really not a common scenario. I hope this note provides a few ideas and gives you a different way of looking at your problem where you separate the concepts of PERMISSIONS from other concepts like ASSIGNMENT. Unable to create CI in CMDB 2.1 P3
Hi list. We just went through and upgraded to ARS 7.1 p7, ITSM 7.0.3 p9, running CMDB 2.1 p3 on windows 2000 server group in preparation for the move to 7.5. We have IM/PM/CM and SLM. Sql 2005 database. Now it appears that the cmdb engine/process isn't firing when we attempt to create a CI through (as an example) AST:Computer Sytem or BMC:CORE:BMC_ComputerSystem. It appears to save but in actuality, it doesn't. I've looked at the armonitor.cfg which has the proper entries for the cmdb executables. D:\Program Files\AR System Applications\Server\BMC Atrium CMDB\server\bin\arcmdbd.exe -i d:\Program Files\AR System\Server -m D:\Program Files\AR System Applications\Server\BMC Atrium CMDB\server\bin\arrecond.exe -i d:\Program Files\AR System\Server -m I've restarted the services on both servers in the group, as well as go rebooting both boxes completely. No change. Also, when I try to make an attribute change in the CMDB Console, it just sits on Change Pending and doesn't move. There is nothing showing in the log. So I'm led to believe that a) The processes aren't starting up correctly. Or b) There is a broken link somewhere that I just can't find. I'd greatly appreciate any help.
