Re: Email Attachment not Displayed in 2007 MS Outlook Client

2012-05-03 Thread Sharon Menachem
Christianne,

What version of Exchange do you have in your organization?

We had a similar issue with attachments which boiled down to the fact that
Exchange 2003 sends some attachments as content type Multipart / Relative.
This causes issues with Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2007 / 2010 where the
attachments are not seen. Outlook Web Access displays the attachments fine
though.

The resolution is to run a command (set-OrganizationConfig
-ShowInlineAttachments:$true) on the exchange 2003 server.

Sharon

That’s all I could think of.

Can you manually send the types of attachments you are trying to send from your
email to another internal email address and view the attachments with no issues?

Also, would there be any restraints on the email account that is created to
send emails?

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your prompt reply. We've tried different kinds of extension to
attach - including word, pdf, excel, png, jpeg - all of them did not show in
the MS Outlook client. This issue appears to be consistent with all users
(we've tested across 3 different mail servers) using MS Outlook client. I've
checked the Attachment Handling properties, looks like default setting looks
OK. Anywhere else I need to check?

Kind regards,

This ARSList is so much better than BMC Communities.
Easier to use...
Faster responses...

I think you should just ask this group for ideas on how to do this task, not
say 'has anyone done this before'... chances are they haven't but they know
how to start.
Just my opinion!

Relationships not showing for custom fields in overlaid forms

2012-05-03 Thread Guillaume Rheault
Dear list,

Could somebody confirm that Relationships or Workflow are not displayed for
custom fields in overlaid forms. If this is true, then it is a bug.

Re: arsystem.ehcache.maxElementsInMemory - what whould it be set to for full ITSM midtier - box has 12GB memory

2012-05-03 Thread Goodall, Andrew C
This is an update from BMC Support:

---

Here's the resolution to the escalation on this issue:

Please ignore the tag arsystem.ehcache.maxElementsInMemory. This tag is ignored
when arsystem.ehcache.referenceMaxElementsInMemory is used in conjunction with
the factors. This tag, arsystem.ehcache.maxElementsInMemory is removed in
7.6.04SP3 [though installer won't remove it on upgrade because of the
confusions).

For your case, if system usage is the same (no increase load in users, reports,
etc) and you have extra memory you want to use for ehcache, for now, it's safe
to increase arsystem.ehcache.referenceMaxElementsInMemory by 1250 per 700MB.
It's your job to guarantee that the OS does not swap when you increase memory
allocation to JVM as swapping will degrade ANY web app's performance. (This is
the typo that is being corrected on our documentation right now).

---

I have replied to request whether we should remove the reference to
arsystem.ehcache.maxElementsInMemory.

Does anyone have recommendations as to how you would ...guarantee that the OS
does not swap when you increase memory allocation to JVM

Thanks.

This is a 64bit Windows 2008 with 2048MB max heap.

I ask because in the below document for an x64 8GB system with 2500MB Max Heap
BMC recommend setting that value to 30,000 and referenceMaxElementsinMemory is
set to 1800

There is quite a lot of information about the various parameters in the mid
tier guide (in the configuring the mid-tier chapter, cache settings section)

maxElementsInMemory is a total count that is actually ignored in favour of
referenceMaxElementsInMemory, which seems to be set to 1250 by default and gets
multiplied by the various factors to determine the count for each type of
object.

You'll run into an address space limit if you are on a 32 bit JVM regardless of
the amount of RAM in the box (a little under 3GB on windows usually) so you
probably aren't going to fit the full ITSM suite in memory unless you are
running on a 64bit JVM. I read somewhere (in the BSM tuning guide I think) that
as a rule of thumb for every 750MB of additional heap size configured over and
above the recommended 1 GB you can increase this value by 1250, so that's
probably a good starting point.

When We were getting the thread stack errors, it kept mentioning a specific

Exception in thread ID005056987A2ElBR3TwDI2fEgH_gh
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

That ID corresponded to our Incoming Mailbox GUID.
We deleted the Incoming mailbox configuration record, and re-created it.
And it appears to be working correctly now.
I'm wondering/thinking that the _ (underscore) in the GUID may have been
causing the issue, but that's just a guess.

WARNING: 7.6.X DDM AND ITSM

2012-05-03 Thread Goodall, Andrew C
This is a heads up to anyone planning a 7.6.04 upgrade.

So we're using DDM (Delta Data Migration) to migrate data to the new
7.6.04 environment from our existing 7.5 implementation.

Well DDM is migrator based and it does not keep track of DELETE
operations.

ITSM workflow will often use DELETE operations on foundation data such
as people permission, support group and functional role removals,
product alias changes, etc...

So now we have to keep track of all these changes and manually remediate
them. As you can guess in a large enterprise this is substantial.

Thank you BMC, thank you very much!

That ID corresponded to our Incoming Mailbox GUID.

We deleted the Incoming mailbox configuration record, and re-created it.

And it appears to be working correctly now.

I'm wondering/thinking that the _ (underscore) in the GUID may have
been causing the issue, but that's just a guess.

That's the reason why you need to use RRR|Chive, which is THE tool for data
migration.
DDM is not production ready yet, it's a nice concept but very limited. With all
the money and resources that BMC spent on DDM,they could have just paid Misi
from RRR to make RRR|Chive prettier, i.e. essentially having a GUI and
colorful reports so management **thinks** it's enterprise ready.

You know how it is, management needs to see pretty power point slides to think
(when they think) that a tool is enterprise ready. RRR|Chive does not have that
prettiness, thanks God, but get's the work done. It's probably because Misi
focused on the design of the tool that it works, instead of focusing on
sugar-coated prettiness and fluff, which takes the focus away in developing
something that really works.

This is a heads up to anyone planning a 7.6.04 upgrade.

So we’re using DDM (Delta Data Migration) to migrate data to the new 7.6.04
environment from our existing 7.5 implementation.
Well DDM is migrator based and it does not keep track of DELETE operations.

ITSM workflow will often use DELETE operations on foundation data such as
people permission, support group and functional role removals, product alias
changes, etc…

So now we have to keep track of all these changes and manually remediate them.
As you can guess in a large enterprise this is substantial.

Thank you BMC, thank you very much!

Yes, we have run into the issues with URL changes for a RKM 7.6.04 article as
well. Below is a dynamic URL you can use as a workaround to lookup the article
which won't change when the article is versioned but it's not the most
efficient construct and it does display a results list at the top of the screen
which is not optimal...

The only direct access URL that still works, without specifying the
SHR:LandingConsole is the one where the entry id (field id 1) is specified,
such as

http://remedy/arsys/servlet/ViewFormServlet?server=remedyappform=CHG%3AInfrastructure%20Changeeid=CRQ0011

it really SUCKS that the other direct URL ones don't work, such as the ones
where you can specify a query.

This new FEATURE broke some existing integrations and made us redesign other
ones... just great. In the ITSM world, having to deal with entry id makes
things kludgy for integrations, since it is the incident ID or change ID that
are visible to the user. But at least that direct ccess URL with the entry ID
works. I hope BMC does not break that one in ITSM 7.7. The direct access URL
mechanism as described in the mid-tier guide page 76-84 has been implemented
for years now until the @#$%^ landing console

It seems to me backwards compatibility should mean more than just API version
compatibility: it should also consider URLs, specially when more and more
integrations use these features to display whatever request/ticket/etc.

This kind of problems could be avoided if there was more communication and
coordination between the different groups that develop the modules, whether
ITSM modules or core ARS components.
Who knows where in the world this SHR:LandingConsole was cooked up, but the

For your case, if system usage is the same (no increase load in users,

now, it's safe to increase arsystem.ehcache.referenceMaxElementsInMemory by
1250 per 700MB. It's your job to guarantee that the OS does not swap when
you increase memory allocation to JVM as swapping will degrade ANY web
app's performance. (This is the typo that is being corrected on our

There is quite a lot of information about the various parameters in the
mid tier guide (in the configuring the mid-tier chapter, cache settings
 section)

maxElementsInMemory is a total count that is actually ignored in favour of
referenceMaxElementsInMemory, which seems to be set to 1250 by default and
gets multiplied by the various factors to determine the count for each type
 of object.

You'll run into an address space limit if you are on a 32 bit JVM
regardless of the amount of RAM in the box (a little under 3GB on windows
usually) so you probably aren't going to fit the full ITSM suite in memory
unless you are running on a 64bit JVM. I read somewhere (in the BSM tuning
guide I think) that as a rule of thumb for every 750MB of additional heap
size configured over and above the recommended 1 GB you can increase this
value by 1250, so that's probably a good starting point.

BMC Numara Footprints to BMC Remedy ITSM License Conversion

2012-05-03 Thread Pierson, Shawn
We're currently in the process of figuring out how many Remedy licenses we need
to purchase in order to bring our newly merged organization up on Remedy. The
other company that we are being combined with is on Footprints, we are on
Remedy, so we thought that BMC would have some sort of license conversion
process. Unfortunately, we've been told that this is not the case and it
doesn't seem like BMC sales is willing to work with us on making that
conversion.

I just wanted to post this as a heads up if anyone else is in a similar
situation. Hopefully this changes in the future but at least in our situation
this is likely to cause severe heartburn with upper management.

Thanks,

Re: Remedy Inbound Email errors Hopefully resolved

2012-05-03 Thread Matthew Perrault
Sorry,
Should have included version info
ARS 7.1
Windows 2003
SQL Server 2005

I did that when we first started seeing the weirdness.
But it didn't have any effect.

I also found/discovered something else.
We have Kinetic's Survey, which has it's own Outbound Mailbox (not associated
to any inbound)
Well that was disabled after I re-added the Inbound mailbox, everything was
working fine (except no surveys going out).
As soon as I turned that Survey Outbound mailbox config back on, it stopped
processing the inbound again.
I turned it off, restarted the email engine, and it processed the stuck ones
fine.
I'm going to delete that record (as I left it there after the email engine
re-install), and re-create it, and see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks for the Suggestion though.

JVM Option Count = 4
JVM Option Number 2 = -Xms256m
JVM Option Number 3 = -Xmx1024m

When We were getting the thread stack errors, it kept mentioning a specific

That ID corresponded to our Incoming Mailbox GUID.

I'm not familiar with those other products.

What we've done to minimize license usage and purchases is to try to
optimize who we provide a fixed vs. floating license.

For heads down console support users and integration service accounts
(creating and updating) e.g. service desk associates - provide a Fixed
license

For all other support users (creating and updating) provide a Floating
license. 1 floating license for every 3 to 5 users - you could start
with 1 to 5 and increase 1 to 3 if you see yourself reaching or
approaching the max under license review.

In addition we have allocated any spare fixed license to other heavy
hitters which we see creating/ updating a lot of incidents, problems,
changes, etc... I get those counts from a sql query. That way we can
make optimum use of our floating licenses. You can also refine this
further if you know users shift hours and provide more fixed licenses to
users during peak hours of the day. E.g. our peak usage is around 9-11am
- so I look for heavy users logged on during that time.

e.g. 600 support users, 100 service desk associates. 100 Fixed
licenses, 100 floating licenses (at 1 to 5)

Re: Relationships not showing for custom fields in overlaid forms

I see them as well (custom fields on overlaid forms - Incident 7.6.04.03) but
then all of my upgrade re-development and subsequent customization was done
with Record Object Relationships turned on. I wonder if the bug only appears
when you make the changes and THEN turn recording on - implying that a new scan
for relationships might miss them where active recording does not.

Now here is the amazing thing: the reply that I got from BMC Support is that

But I trust a lot more the listers than BMC Support, I have had very crappy

Hopefully it is just a case of your sales contact not knowing what he or she is
doing. We may be migrating from ITSM to one of the other two BMC products
(requirement is to move to a hosted solution rather than on-premise), and a
lack of flexibility on transferring licenses is the quickest way I know to

other company that we are being combined with is on Footprints, we are on
Remedy, so we thought that BMC would have some sort of license conversion

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson
