Re: Flashboard License Clarification

2009-03-26 Thread VanSickle, James W
James is correct.

To use the OOTB ITSM 7 Flashboards, you need to have a Flashboards Server
license. Otherwise, Remedy will pick 5 of the two dozen Flashboards that come
with ITSM and disable the others.

Remedy does not care how many times a Flashboard has been viewed, just how many
you have created.

My understanding is that only the first 5 flashboards that are created
or exist on the system, will be available to view. If you create a
6th flashboard, you will need to delete one of the first 5 in order to
use the 6th and restart your web server or ARServer as well. I am not
sure what needs to be restarted to reset the counts. I don't think it
has anything to do with how many times a working flashboard has been
viewed.
I think OOTB ITSM 7 has more than 5 flashboards configured.

If you restart your web server then the count resets.

After that, if anyone opens a form with a flashboard on it then as the
flashboard displays the flashboard count will increment.

When 5 flashboards have been displayed then an attempt to view a 6th will
  give the message you see.

You can control this by restarting the web server then immediately opening
the five flashboards you want users to see.

Do not underestimate the power of a restart. :-)

We had a similar issue, but it only affected people with a blank
password in their User record. If I remember right, the Application or
Midtier password was wrong but did not automatically fix the issue when
we changed it. We had to restart Midtier in order to get the problem
fully resolved.

When in doubt, reboot.

Re: Installing Secondary Server in Server Group

2009-03-19 Thread VanSickle, James W
To my knowledge, there is no single White Paper outlining all the
components in one document. The information is scattered about in their
KB database.

Each process component installation for Server Group can vary too. For
example, you can just run the Email Engine installer on your Secondary
Server, and then leave the Email Engine service off with a Manual
startup mode. However, when installing AIE, you should not run the
installer, but copy the directory and registry settings from your
primary server to your secondary server.

For AIE installation, check out KB article 2402 (Installed AIE7.1
with Server group Option) in the Knowledge Base on the BMC Support
website.

If you are not already, you should try to use a uniform directory
structure on both servers. This becomes especially helpful when running
certain Run Process commands.

Good morning,

I am beginning to set up the second server that will then be configured
in a server group. The primary server is up and running as follows:

Windows 2003 Server
Oracle 10 DB (remote)
ARS 7.1 P6 - including email, approval, assignment, flashboards
CMDB 2.1 P4
AIE 7.1 P4
ITSM 7.0.3 P7
SLM 7.1 P1

I have successfully installed ARS 7.1 P6 (server only) on the secondary
server using the shared DB option. This is working as well.

My next steps are the various other components: email, approval, etc.
Sadly, I have found very little in the way of instructions on this.
Some components have more than others...very inconsistent.

My question is...does BMC or somebody have a comprehensive white paper
or instruction set that addresses installation of the other components
like email.

Thanks,

What would be really nice is a Template Form Type; a form that you could
setup a look and feel along with core fields that would replicate down
to its related forms. So if you had a standard banner or certain fields
like a standard navigation bar that should appear on multiple forms, you
add those forms to the template. When the Template is updated the
changes are reflected instantly through all the other forms.

An alternative is if someone can show me how to securely pass
authentication from client to a web view so use doesn't have to

I need to pass parameters also, but that should not be as big an

Monster.com was pretty good to me a few months ago when I was looking.
You should also go through this list's most recent archives. There have
been a number of openings being advertised in the past few days. Also,
you might also want to give Joshua Kitchen and Melissa Wish a call.
Joshua usually has a number of contracts in DC, and Melissa is a Remedy
recruiter for Column IT.

Good luck in your search.

My information comes from security officials that I spoke with directly
within the Pentagon and National Security Agency. Based on their
policies, someone who presently does not have security clearance cannot
be cleared if they are currently married to a foreign national.
However, an already cleared individual is allowed to marry a foreign
national, provided that individual does not spawn any red flags during
the security review.

This was around 2003 to 2004 so I am not clear on whether this policy
was in place or heavily enforced before 9/11. However, the fact I was
(and still am) married to a Greek national shut down my interview faster
than I could say my own name.

There is also another side to this as well.

How many companies in the current financial climate can or are willing
to send some or all of their Remedy teams to such a conference? If I
was a manager trying to keep costs down, I might have a difficult time
justifying plane tickets, hotel fees, car rental, and other travel
expenses for such a conference. BMC could have some very justified
fears that attendance would be too low to be worth the effort, and that
a number of third-party vendors may also keep their staff away in
efforts to save costs.

Roger, on the surface that makes sense. But you can bet they haven't
stopped spending money on sales and marketing. And RUG is certainly
that. It is the one event they put on that stirs the pot, so to speak.
They must think there is no money to be made right now.

How much can it possibly cost to put on one of these? Isn't the entry
fees of the people enough to cover the costs?

I think that if someone on the list was motivated enough, they might
could even make some money by putting it on. If you have it somewhere,
like here in OKC, it would be a lot cheaper, and in the middle of the
US, so it would be easier for everyone to attend.

What is usually the admission fees at the RUGs in the past, I've never
been to one?

If you charge an admission fee to the people, then a booth fee for the
presentations, those fees should pay for themselves, and shouldn't have
to be too much.

Re: Application Statistics not working (UNCLASSIFIED)

2008-12-01 Thread VanSickle, James W
Have you tried restarting your Remedy services?

We use Server Groups so I setup workflow to combine the statistics
recorded from each server into a singular record of how the overall
system is doing. When I first setup the workflow, I made an error on a
filter that prevented Remedy from creating new entries on the
Application Statistics form. The error killed the process that captures
statistics, and the system would not generate any new records even after
removing the errant Filter until I restarted my ARS services.

I also had an instance where one of my servers decided for no apparent
reason to generate two duplicate records each time statistics were
gathered. The only fix I could find was once again restarting Remedy
services, which restored my statistics gathering process to working
order.

Re: Creating an Automated Email System

2008-10-30 Thread VanSickle, James W
I just wanted to add something to the previous suggestion.

4. Create a control form to hold configuration data on how to process
incoming mail. The benefit is that items such as group assignment,
categories, and priority can be updated through data changes rather than
updating workflow itself.

The control form allows you to not have to worry about development,
testing, approvals, and all the other rigors required when following a
normal Release cycle for Form and Workflow changes. A developer at a
previous company I worked at did something like this for multiple
incoming email accounts. The system was setup for a variety of support
groups so they (or automated systems) could open tickets by email.
Workflow was also configured to recognize forwarded messages, and setup
the ticket's requester as the original sender rather than the individual
forwarding the message. This proved very handy for the emails we would
get from users who email the developers directly about their problems
rather than calling the Help Desk.

Hope this helps,

My 2 cents to update an existing ticket from incoming emails.

1. Create a Staging Form that will have all the Incoming Emails.

This staging form will have fields - Subject, Message, Incident ID,
Task ID, and Service Request ID etc

2. Create Filter(s) that fires on submit with a Run If
qualification(s) of INC0% or REQ0% or WO0% or TAS0% or CRQ%
parse the respective number (using functions STRSTR, LTRIM, SUBSTR) and
set it into the corresponding field.

3. Then, push it to the corresponding work log.

This assumes that

* The Subject Line of the email will contain
Incident/Request/Work Order/Task ID.

* It is an ITSM 7 environment.

Thanks

gets submitted to the Email Holding form where agents can take further
actions on the email. Any input will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Is the server the problem is happening on part of a Server Group with a
load balancing switch? If so and you are using the AR Admin Console,
you should check the actual config file on each server to make sure the
settings are the same.

Strange.. The only time I've ever seen the log file just give the
opening and closing tags are when I had the wrong client side logging
group...

I would suggest checking permissions on the files, but if that were the
case, you wouldn't be able to get anything into the log files.

This is getting interesting.

I agree with LJ. Chris, try setting an explicit group for logging, then
giving your login account that same explicit group. Try it out again,
and see how it works.

Same behavior for Demo. The ID I am using is definitely a member of the

Kindly let me know in case of any concerns on this.

Concerns? My concern is that BMC will extend the time it takes to
properly address this issue by having me jump through the hoops of your

Unfortunately not, it was two years and two companies ago now. I know
it exists because I spent over a week pulling my hair out on the same
issue, then bit the bullet and called BMC who promptly sent me the
article. You should get BMC Support to send you the article too. For
some reason, not all KB articles are publically available on their
knowledge base. I don't know if that is by design, just a configuration
problem, or just something screwy in how the Knowledge Base does its

User crashes on mshtml.dll - RESOLVED

2008-10-10 Thread VanSickle, James W
Team

A few weeks ago, I had sent an email asking about an issue
that several of my users have been experiencing where the Remedy 7.x
client appeared to crash randomly with errors on the mshtml.dll file.
After much testing, patch upgrades, and so forth, we narrowed the cause
of the problem and a fix that appears to be working.

Every user that was having crash issues had Internet
Explorer 6 installed rather than the later version of IE7. I spoke with
BMC Support about this issue, and they confirmed with their backline
engineers that this is a known issue. The Remedy User 7.x client does
not play well with Internet Explorer version 6, and has a tendency to
crash especially when users attempt to change workstation display or
network settings. Upgrading to a higher version or patch of Remedy User
would alleviate the problem for some, but did not cause the problem to
disappear entirely. Upgrading to IE7 on a few select workstations has
caused the problem to disappear entirely.

So if you are experiencing the same problem with Remedy User
7.x appearing to crash almost at random, you may wish to make sure the
user has the latest version of IE7 installed. BMC Support did state
that their engineers are working a fix for IE6, but do not have any ETA
on when a fix would be available, if ever.

Thanks to everyone who sent me comments and suggestions both
on the list and privately about this issue.

Re: license utilization monitoring in remedy

2008-10-07 Thread VanSickle, James W
Manish

Turn on Application-level Statistics on your server for each
application that you are looking to track. We have had pretty good
success in doing this for our ITSM 7.x applications.

However, you should be aware of the following regarding
statistics if you are using Server Groups and a load balancing switch to
direct traffic to each server. We had to include
Use-Server-Connect-Name-In-Stats: T and make sure
Server-Connect-Name: points to each individual server name in our
ar.cfg files. Otherwise, Remedy would just grab the statistics from the
primary server in our server group, and did not record stat data from
the secondary box.

You can either combine the data together in Crystal Reports
showing overall application usage, or you can setup a separate form and
workflow that combines the statistic data using Filters when new entries
get created on the Application Statistics form.

Is it possible to take out the statistics of how many floating

The key here is to get the Change Floating and Helpdesk Floating license

SAP and Remedy Client Conflicts

User crashes on mshtml.dll

2008-09-19 Thread VanSickle, James W
Fellow ARSListers

I have been working with BMC Support about this issue, and
have been able to get very far. Has anyone seen this error message
before and found either a potential cause or fix for it. The users who
are getting the below message are running Windows XP Professional with
Service Pack 2. I have tried the Remedy User clients 7.0.1 Patch 4,
7.0.1 Patch 9, and 7.1 Patch 4. In each case, the problem returns.
During each installation, I delete all remaining files and registry
settings of the previous Remedy client.

The client appears to be crashing mostly when the user has
the Remedy client minimized and is working in other programs. Those
other programs vary from Microsoft Word, MS Excel, and Internet
Explorer. When he is using IE, the user is only going to news sites of
major online papers (no fancy blogs, online applications, or sites with
questionable security). The only consistency in this situation is the
below error message we keep finding in the Event Viewer. The crash
appears to happen at completely random intervals too, and I cannot find
any action they are consistently taking to cause the crash.

Faulting application aruser.exe, version 7.1.0.4, faulting module
mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.3395, fault address 0x00120911.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. The
hardware and software requirements of the workstation fall within the
compatibility matrix's recommendations. The Remedy server itself is
using ARS 7.0.1 Patch 4 with ITSM 7.0.2 Patch 4.

Re: User crashes on mshtml.dll

2008-09-19 Thread VanSickle, James W
I have one user where this problem happens most frequently, but others
have also reported the problem to varying degrees. This issue started
out with users reporting that their clients were crashing when they
unlocked their workstations while they had the Change Management Console
from ITSM 7 open. According to BMC Support, this was a known defect
that was fixed in Patch 7 of the 7.0.1 Remedy User client.

I went with Patch 9 on v7.0.1, and that appeared to resolve the issue
for the majority of users. I have at least three users who are still
having problems. I did more research with one of these users, and also
found the crash also takes place when they are changing their Proxy
settings in IE or open their Control Panel and look at their Network
settings.

The file named in the crash (mshtml.dll) keeps leading me to believe the
source of the problem might be with a Data Visualization field. There
is a DV field on the Change Management Console of ITSM 7 that references
a Flashboard object. However, I cannot locate why a small group of
users are experiencing these problems while the majority go about their
days without any issue.

Is this isolated to a single user's machine? If so, have you explored
re-imaging the machine and then using a new UT installation? I know it
sounds extreme, but it is sometimes quicker to do for a one-off, hard to
reproduce, possibly OS or 3rd Party Software related issue. :-)

Did you update only your admin tool to that patch or did it require a

when it worked for the most part so would be good to have it working

The primary cause why the sync operation fails is if it is run against a
significantly large database - size in terms of structure - thousands of
forms, and active links and filters etc.. I was never able to run it on
ITSM 7 databases - it either failed by crashing the admin tool or
sometimes even though it looks like it has completed with the end
message that the search completed, it is actually incomplete. Many of
the forms do not have anything in the sync database tables thus showing
blank space in the Related Workflow tab..

Over the past year or so I have actually given up on ever expecting this
feature to work on large databases such as the ITSM database..

Hope this helps..

Subject: Sync Search Database crashes Admin Tool and then Freezes

Sorry for the no subject, my original email had a subject, but it was
sent incorrectly and errored.

Thanks Roger, that gets the sync to stop. There was a trick out there
that some people used that would fix the issue where it would crash the
admin tools. I believe it involved deleting some forms. Does anyone
remember the issue, because I'm still crashing my admin tool every time
I try to sync.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi all, I know that I've seen it on here before, but due to changing
jobs, I do not have my vast archive of emails through which I could
search.

Whenever you sync your search dataset, and it causes your admin tool to
crash, then you open your admin tool, it still says it's searching, and
never finishes, what is it you do in order to rectify the situation and
get a new search database synced?

I have seen it done before, but forgot how.

Thanks
