Now, I'm not saying all these features are useful or cutting-edge, but they're there. I don't use a lot of them.I also tend to greatly prefer Jaws on the internet, given the way NVDA reacts to webpages and lays things out. I'm much happier using a combination of Jaws and IE, or Jaws and Chrome, for web-browsing.That said, I do have NVDA installed and I use it pretty regularly. I'm able to see the good in it. It is an excellent screenreader and ultimately what it will come down to for a lot of users is preference. It's also free to use, so that's enormous. The past few days I found out that my lady is pregnant, I've had to call my parents and tell them the good news and in general, I had to think a lot about what will happen next and how are we going to sort all these things out. Re: Monthly chat December 2019 Damn, you beat me!Oh I'll have to try harder next year .Well Well as I said in december's topic things are not great at the moment, though hopefully the bad reaction my lady had over the weekend is dying down a bit and this week we can get back to normal somewhat, we both want to see Frozen 2 and maybe the addams family if its still showing. We also of course need to sort out various christmas shopping type things, which is going to make life interesting. Actually, to say we went to the rather nice christmas fair a week last Sunday, Christmas seems to have crept up on us somewhat this year, though of course part of that is not having a tv so not being bombarded quite as much commercialism, (even from Amazon I've tried to opt out of as many adverts as possible). The thing I am looking forward to this year is the arrival of my birthday present, all 8 seasons of game of thrones on dvd, since I've only seen up to series 4 so far and it'd be great to do the lot.I'm also goig to buy manamon 2 as soon as I've finished the first game and completed the manapedia, and I'm on the home stretch with that. that will be fun I think. thankfully, assuming my lady doesn't have any other bad reactions to antibiotics, she's got a bit of a break until she starts the radio therapy in the new year, which will hopefully she'll be generally a bit better and we can do fun stuff. And honistly, even though i have both, I still prefer nvda because of mostly 1 reason: jaws is laggy. I did a speech test between nvda eloq and jaws eloq, and nvda won almost all of the time. But I prefer espeak anyway, and that is suuper fast. Re: Why I prefer NVDA over JAWS I, as a JAWS user from 2005? to 2011 and as an NVDA user since 2011 (I've used other screen readers like Super Nova (at the time Access Suite (now called Mag Reader)), the defunct thunder and other which I don't know the name of), I will stay with NVDA for ever. Plus, it has now the first place of used screen readers according to a blind servey I was responding? 2 months ago, but I forgot the name of it. It is kinda historical at best since many people were using expensive apps for visualy impaired / low vision people and I sincerely go with NVDA at best. Although, freedom scientific have tried to make plans for jaws not as expensive, e.g: i believe they have a 90 day trial and a monthly or yearly subscription to avoid paying all up front. Just my opinion? its too little; too late at this point. A lot of users are making the switch to nvda if they haven't already. Is jaws bad? no. But for a company that limes that their goal is to help people, etc, etc? For years having to pay over $1000 up front or get screwed; speaks out very; very loudly about freedom Scientific. I just set it to 100 percent and well, that was its new setting until... my computer just died out of nowhere. lol. Long stury short, i had to replace the fan. Just be mindful about whenever you decide to speed up the fan on your machine. Learned that the hard way lol. Why I prefer NVDA over JAWS Hello all. So as you see from the title, I'm stating why I prefer the NVDA Windows screen reader over JAWS. Honestly, it boils down to only a few things. So without further to do, let's not waste time and get going.1. Price.This is one thing that a lot of people discuss when talking about NVDA Vs JAWS. JAWS is expensive. Is this saying it's bad? No. However, why should I have to pay $1100 for something to read my screen? Why should I have to pay for the new license every year when VFO releases the new versions?2. CustomizationAnother thing that many NVDA users including myself like about NVDA is how customizable it is. Something inaccessible? No problem. There's probably an add on that can fix it. Just install it and you're pretty much good to go.3. There is really not much of a difference between the two programs.One misconception that a lot of people who feel comfortable with JAWS have is that it will be too hard to learn. This is not the case. You may think you don't know how to use NVDA, but you're wrong. Same for NVDA users who end up having to use JAWS at one point. If you know how to use one, you pretty much know how to use the other. So if you know JAWS, then you know NVDA, and if you know NVDA and have to use JAWS at some point, you know JAWS. Although there are a few differences, I would guess that at least 97 to 98% of the features of both programs are identical. If anyone else thinks it's different, please let me know.4. NVDA has added features before JAWS did.If you've been using NVDA for a while, you know that if you're editing a document or some web forms, it will tell you that a word is misspelled. This feature was added in NVDA 2017, or maybe even a little earlier if I'm not mistaken. JAWS never had it until 2019. If they had it before, I never realized it.5. NVDA handles some programs a lot better.there are some programs that although JAWS reads them, it's not the ideal solution. There are some programs that JAWS just is inconvenient to use, and you'd be better off with NVDA.6. Object nav and the JAWS curser.There are some programs that using your standard screen reader commands just won't cut it. In these situations, you have to use either the JAWS curser, or in the case of NVDA, Object Nav, or what some call the Review Curser. Honestly, NVDA handles this better than JAWS. With JAWS, you have to use one command to root JAWS through your PC, then select the JAWS curser. With NVDA, you either use the numpad if you're on desktop layout, or you use the special keys for laptop mode if you use that layout. Also, for NVDA, I recommend the objpad add on. It makes it easier for these types of situations. All you do is press control+NVDA+Tab to cycle between different navigation modes, and start navigating. If you are in a program like Steam or something else where you may need the review curser, just go to scan mode and use your arrows. The only downside of this is that since both Space and enter activate optionss, whenever you type a space, it will always say that it's activating something. In this case, switch to normal mode, finish typing, press enter, return to scan mode, and have fun.SummaryOver all, the main things that attract me to NVDA are the fact that it's free, and the fact that it's so customizable. In my opinion, JAWS is overrated and is not worth the $1100 price tag VFO puts on it. Honestly, I would never even buy their monthly plans. Had I gone to a decent mainstream school, as in, one where the teachers would do more than just the bare minimum to follow the letter of the law, and not make it perfectly clear that had they had it their way, they never would have dealt with a blind student at all, I can say that I would agree with those of you who say it's better. On a purely logical level, I do completely understand the benefits, particularly since I saw many of the bad things that can result from being sequestered in a sheltered environment such as a school for the blind. There's good and bad in almost everything, I just happened to have the shitty end of the stick thrust at me throughout my life, so my experiences don't represent the norm, or, at least, I would hope they don't. To drop items, shift+alt+q for pack and use g to cycle through the trash graphics, then enter on the item to drop it.Having said all that, I'm totally open to changing how it works, I doubt my first idea in my first venture into screen readers is the best one.EDIT: Oh I just thought, would it be good if cycling through the item buttons actually just read the description every time? I can look at the save and see what can be done.The potions are definitely reading back for me. It sounds like you might have an old cached version of the game. To force your browser to get the latest version.Adding sounds outside of the screen reader's voice is something I plan to do. I have a unique challenge with this game when it comes to sounds. The original goal for this game was to have the whole game self contained in a single html file with no references to outside resources. Newer browsers allow you to embed binary files into the source code now, so I'm looking into doing that, but it's a new tech for me. I'm working on learning it though.Ok, so the quickest/easiest way I have figured out how to get the item info is using access keys. shift+alt+q for pack, b to cycle through item buttons, then shift+alt+? for inspect, then enter to get info. It's a lot but its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I've only been using NVDA and access keys since this thread started and I have it down pretty well now. To drop items, shift+alt+q for pack and use g to cycle through the trash graphics, then enter on the item to drop it.Having said all that, I'm totally open to changing how it works, I doubt my first idea in my first venture into screen readers is the best one. You should check out The vOICes main site [here] for information and the latest news, the training guide is listed [here]. I'm not sure what the adoption rates are for the phone app perse in terms of ease of use, hm. Something you could try is grabbing the recently open sourced [Google VR] which is made of cardboard, mount your phone into it and use VR mode on The vOICe, which might provide a more intuitive experience, it costs around 15$ to 20$ for the simple cardboard VR mount. Alternatively you could go with the [VISION-800] smart glasses for roughly 180$. There's also a more DIY approach you could use, such as with a cheap webcam clipped to a hat, or something more DIY like the depreciated [After Sight] project.Keep in mind that its an evolving technology and isn't perfect, by any means. Others are working on different rendering methods for spacial mapping by using Depthmaps, among other things. You could also check out another free app based on The vOICe called [EyeMusic], it uses more musical tones and also parses color a bit better, though may lack a few other features. Also, Mud Sound Protocol (MSP) does not work in the demo, and only one character is allowed per session of the client. I have the full version of the client, and I have found it far easier to use, interface-wise, than mush-z, despite the native sound pack support for Alter Aeon. There are a few sound packs that are available for Alter Aeon with VIPMud, but none of them are as sophisticated, or as vast as that of Mush-Z, in part, I believe, because people have not taken enough time to develop an equally competent sound pack for this MUD. Re: I have a multiple account Honestly I think I got the best end of going to a blind school. I have actually gone to a blind school since I was 3, and I thought it was an interesting experience. Because my parents did their best to keep me "in the know" with social cues with the outside world, I do think that I was able to reap some of the benefits of both going to and not going to a blind school. There never seemed to be issues when I went, although there were definitely other issues that I knew about. Thankfully, I was able to attend another school taking honors classes there, so I was able to get that experience as well. Jaidon, my cousin stayed for a month then his mum decided normal school was better. I stayed a bit later and you can see the effects on me. Lower scores than other people in my class plus social instabillity my aunty always said blind school was dumb school. Its a good thing i got out when i had the chance Most of the blind school people i know tend to act like cave people with no social skills and come out as what we here call bhebhe. No form of basic skills. I figure the Snow Defense ability also has a larger effect with higher raw defenses because these things usually multiply, but of course, it doesn't say how much the stat is boosted, and unlike other ways of modifying stats, the letter keys don't show the updated values when weather abilities are influencing them. Ah well, I can always change the TP distribution later. Well, actually, changed the way wooden nickles are given out. The only ways to get them now are from the Deck of Fate and from boss drops. But, a boss will always drop one if you don't have one. So plan on doing your shopping after each boss fight. Also, I significantly increased the strength and health of enemies after your 50th scene on the same prestige. So without prestiging, things will get very very tough eventually. The tougher you are, the longer you can stay on the same prestige, but eventually you'll have to bow out with a Humble Pie. The health and strength ramp up starts slowly but jumps up significantly every 50 scenes. Even with an integrated command and output you'll need time to review which is not good during combat either way. Re: Using Alter Aeon on VIP MUD If you can have more then one world in VIP different packs should work.And, wow, it's kinda interesting how some say VIP is so good, I tried the demo that helped me decide that it wasn't for me. The review and command window was okay but, I found the rest of it complicated.On the other hand MUSH has been amazing.At times I feel like it's the purchase factor, "well, I paid for it so I have to make it work." The other is more understandable, just knowing how to use it and not wanting to learn something new.I know some of the mechanics differ but if one can get use to something else at times is better.Before MUSH I used GMUD with JAWS but my JAWS version would no longer work with Windows and I couldn't afford an update and got NVDA. I loved the simplicity of GMUD but NVDA wouldn't work with it so learned to use MUSH.
