Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's review of "Slammed," Hello all, due to things that have come up I've slowed down even more on my playthroughs, but I finally finished "Slammed," and have to say this one both impressed and frustrated me, but we'll get to that. genre: This game is about the on-stage and off-stage life and drama of a professional wrestler dealing with something that happened in their past with an old rival, their attempted rise to the top of the pro wrestling circuit, and the politics of a reality show and later the association as a whole. The game portrays itself as this and you get exactly what it promises.Biases: I am not a fan of either professional wrestling or reality TV. I also know as I write this that I have barely scratched the surface of what appears to be an enormous gamebook despite playing throughh it all the way once. writing: The game has a very interesting multiple viewpoints writing style, along with your actions backstage, how you are seen on-stage, and the technical descriptions of your fights, the game also bookends many chapters with blog posts about your career or the actions leading up to or just concluded in the story to both deliver exposition on things you aren't directly involved in and also to give an outsider's perspective of all the drama. This is a very effective style and I found it really cool. The characteers are also well and alive in this story, whether you're dealing with the zen aragoance of Solitary, the nosey reporter sportscaster thing Madison Rio has going on, the no-nonsense stuff with the savvy Alex Dobbs, or the utter pain in the neck assholism of Paul Prototype, these characters give you good reason to love, hate, fear, or admire them. As with most reality show folks and pro wrestlers, they have a big image ego thing going on and you see that a lot, but this game is about the cutthroate politics of pro wrestling as well as what happens in the ring and how they run together. The characters I encountered were excellently crafted and their personalities are much more developed than you generally see in a choiceofgames title. mechanics: murky, but really only for me. I think my trouble with some of the mechanics was due to personal stupidity and not the game's fault. Sometimes directly applying heat, favor, and such was an issue, as was cape-fab whcih is apparently your over-the-top nature. For the actual wrestling stats, they are pretty straightforward, and in the game, sometimes they give little hints as to what a decision means, though when they didn't, I was generally at sea. When it wasn't spelled out, I wasn't sure what skill was being used and was generally wrong when I tried to predict the consequences of my actions. Some of this is because I'm not sure sometimes what certain wrestling moves were clasified as. Also, the game has a lot of twists and turns built in that you can't avoid so you're going to be surprised from time to time. romance: it is almost certain there is some. I was asked in an early decision what sort of people my character liked and there were a number of cuties in the story. I however, played a massive heel both on and off the stage and so I didn't make many friends. I can't say exactly where this goes as I have played so far.achievements: oh god Yes! the game has 70 different achievements in all. I did very well in my first play though I did not get the best ending an donly finished 17 of them. Most of their point values are very small, with most being 10 or even 5-pointers. That said, these achievements tell you exactly all the cool things you can do in the game and this, above everything else, tells me I'll be writing a revised review down the road when I take another path. railroading: the events are pretty scripted, but it's clear that this is a massively-branching story. You have some pretty set tracks of events, but you get to switch down the branches as you go. I imagine if I had been a nicer person, or had focused more on forming allies, more on my wrestling skills as I mostly focussed on social and image skills, or made different choices where my strategic choices were either good or bad, I would be having a very different sort of story than I had. The achievements back me up here and I'm sure there is a lot of content I have not seen despite the fact that my game took me quite a while and the chapters are fairly long.closing remarks: I think pro wrestling is really stupid, and I think reality TV is even stupider, however, in the case of this game, the ratings don't lie. This game has an almost perfect rating and it deserves it. I put it only at #6 as of the time of the writing of this because of some confusion I experienced from lack of knowledge when playing the game. This is a definitely good option though and it is definitely worth the playing.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all, still working through "Slammed" slowly but surely, but I'm not here to talk about that. after over a month, the Choiceofgames line has a new entry under the main line, This time, it is one called "Fate of the Storm Gods." I thought this might be a sequel or something in the line of "Champion of the Gods" or "Exile of the Gods" but this seems to be different. You play the role of a Weather builder, one of the benevolent beings who controls the weather when humans arrive and tell you that the antithesis of the Weather builders, the Weather eaters, have been unleashing negative weather isasters mercilessly over the land. along with that Bloodthirsty Homonculi of the weather eaters have been causing massive bloodshed. It is up to you to rectify the problems, or take advantage of them, while growing your power and guiding the growth of your own Homonculus. You can save the humans, play for the gain of yourself or your own side, or even I'd imagine join the weather eaters as one of the romance interests is one. This seems more unique than I thought it would be, but it will be a very long time before I get to it. So if anyone tries it out and likes it, let me know. In fact, let us  know if it isn't all that good too.

One of my favorites is that archangel gang fight and crime game, i honestly forgot it's name by now. I really hope that the series will get a second book. It's a  nice change of pace from horses and swords to guns and fast cars, although I would like something involving horses and guns xD.Choice of the cat is another neat little game, I still to this day find out new things, I sadly never got all of the endings, the music career one is really something I want to achieve or check out what might happen with that naibor of theirs. There is also that new indiana jones type game, treasure hunter in the 30s, haven't really checked out more than the description yet.And something with mechanical mechs in a mideevel age, does sound like an interesting concept.Greetings Moritz.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

I've been told that the Hero Project is best in "The Prodigy" and the later books are more platforms for the author to politicize, but again, that is just what I've heard from others. I'll still play them when I get to them, the same as the choice of the Vampire sequels, but I've heard the first one is the best.Right now, I'm slowly working through "slammed," which is a pro-wrestling story. I'd like to hear what a pro-wrestling fan who has played the game thinks of it because I know my review is going to be lacking a bit as I am not a pro-wrestling or reality TV fan which are prime aspects of this story. My lack of knowledge on Pro-wrestling is so great that I know I am missing a lot of the concept of the game. I'm playing it sensically but I know I'm missing a lot of the nuances and references.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Again I didn't really take prodigal any more or less seriously than most characters in the game, indeed I sort of got that the hole monologuing villain thing wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, or maybe it was that the hero's "tragic past", and the character who played into it was rather blatantly a super hero origin story I don't know. For me at least, most of the characters here seemed more there just to prop up the story than people I really got connected to, which was why the death of one character and betrayal of another didn't bother me as much, and why I just tended to roll my eyes at most of the preachy moments or in your face characters.I think I gave it a 7-10 on the rating scale, since I did genuinely enjoy a lot of it, the tactical fights, need to play to your strengths and relationships, the reactions of characters, and the way that the game really did take the journey of having a lot of things fail or only just succeed, only to work out at the end.It was rollicking good fun as a gamebook, though not the sort of thing I'd care for over much if it were a novel. Now I need to decide whether to go straight on to hero project or try something else first.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

I like your observations on the game. Black magic was a little forced, but Madam Vice didn't bother me so much. I'm more willing to tolerate over-the-top personalities in supervillains. Mdam Vice for me was supposed to be super-slimy ultrafemmenine. Jury was probably my least favorite character. Though I was also annoyed by the way Processor chose to identify and mark herself as femmenine was to give her avatar huge glowing boobs. I also hated Victin as a character because his slimy politician role was so forced. Oddly one of my favorite characters in the story in terms of how well she was done was Prodigal, she was probably the one that felt most alive to me, though Jenny was all right too. But probably for me Prodigal was the most real despite the fact she is a vindictively-obsessed supervillain with the single-minded desire to ruin your life.

@Targor, I do know you see more of Black magic in the series, it was just how adolescent this one felt, even if it was relatively decently written. I'd have actually been interested to see what happens if you play a character attracted to guys and Black magic ends up as male, just to see how the scenes played out. Actually, since I played a man the first time around, I was nearly tempted to play a lady this time, though decided to play a man either way.

@164 I understand what you mean about Black Magic, but I must say I enjoyed this chapter very much, although not in the true love  sense. I always thought that while the main character may or may not be earnest in wanting to build a relationship with her, Black Magic herself is kinda using the main character here and tries to get him on her side, making him not able to refuse her wishes. So I interpreted the whole wish fulfilment stuff as exactly what she wanted to achieve. This gets even more noticeable in the next Heros rise book, where you can potentially see a different side to her character.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Okay well I finally decided to get back to the cog titles. It's odd, I sort of forget about them  for long periods, then dither about what to play next, then can't decide, then go back to forgetting . However, today to stop the dithering I just decided to play hero's rise, the prodigy which was next on the list. I did play through before in 2014, and remember enjoying the game more than I expected, since I am really not a fan of the super hero genre. I enjoyed it more than expected again today, albeit that might be because I didn't take matters quite as seriously. The writing was relatively clean,  albeit rather fulsome and overly self-agrandising in parts (though that's all part of the super hero genre). I liked the strategic mechanics in managing your power levels and health while making decisions. Npcs felt a bit thin, but I did at least get the impression that these were people who would react to what I did, indeed in general the game did a pretty good job of creating a situation which both felt very urgent and threatening, and one where where you mostly could fail at things but get through in the end. I finished with a legend score at 50, though looking at the perfect legend guide I'm not %100 sure where I slipped up, although I'll save that for a replay.I also got the idea that while the game was essentially structured as a series of challenges and that events couldn't deviate too much, these were challenges you could succeed or fail at, and had to play to your strengths to accomplish, so while it's slightly more game than book, at least it is an interesting game.I didn't have as much of an issue with stereotypical characters that bookrage mentioned in his review, either because I took a lot with a pinch of salt, or whether it's because super heroes are inherently an excessive projection of identity anyway, some characters like Jury, The diva and Madam vice I did find rather in your face and annoying, but how much of that was intentional I don't know.I only have two really major issues with the game, the first is the "how dare you not tell me something which I didn't know you knew, therefore I'm mad at you!" a trope which just frankly annoys me in fiction anyway since it seems to just exist to make the main character into a winjy arse. The second, is the romance with black magic. Maybe it was that my lady and I mistakenly read a really terrible romance together recently, but even though the writing here was reasonable, so many of the tropes this relationship employed from instant mental connection having to avoid all that boring getting to know people thing, to some blatantly trite moments, like black magic's lingerie, her resemblance to a famous actress of your choice and that rather cringe worthy moment when she cooks you junk food after making love, just felt a bit to obviously wish fulfilment fantasy and less character connection. The moral dilemma with blackmagic's plot was an interesting one, although I'm afraid as someone who has an incredibly disabled sister, I know where I pretty much stand on that one, although interestingly enough when I played the game in 14 I still tried to maintain a relationship with black magic, where as now, with that hole thing feeling less than critical to me, I pretty much broke it off, largely because the relationship here just didn't work for me.Actually, it's sort of interesting that my feelings about this relationship changed such a lot after! my own rather story book and fairy tale romance, though why this is I'm not sure. apart from that though, the game was fun. Not best of the best, but easy going and just nice to go through. also, helpfully enough, I was able to import my savegame this time (one reason why I never seriously continued with the series) so I might go on to the others, since while I'm not crazy about super heroes, this was nice for some light relief.

Hello all,Just letting you know that a couple more Hostedgames titles have been released. The first one I believe is called "Relics war" or something with relics. It is a swashbuckling 1930s adventure in the vein of indiana jones. The Nazis are seeking six incredibly powerful artifacts all over the world that could tip the scales in the upcoming war if you don't stop them. You have to get to the six artifacts before they do.The other is "Brothers' war" where you play in pre-Christian Ireland as the disgraced son of a Irish Chieftain as the vikings and other thereats invade the land. You have to figure out how to regain your honor, join the vikings, or seize or earn the throne of your clan. It is described as a historical-fantasy game so there might be supernatural aspects to it.Just thought I'd let you guys know of these new releases.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all, choiceofgames has released another title for their main line. This one is called "The luminous underground." In this one, you've been awarded a contract by a seedy subway company to clean out the subway of ghosts in a strange magical world. With your rainbow guns you need to clean out the tunnels, deal with local politics getting in your way, make money, and deal with your rivals. There do seem to be a few features they mentioned such as a forest of crystaline trees in the underground  and such, but a lot of it seems to be inspired by Ghostbusters. I'm not saying that is a bad thing, it just seems to be a major inspiration for this one. it's on sale until Christmas eve, so if you want it at a reduced price, head out and get it.The thing is 660k words, so you've probably got a lot of content to deal with.

Hello all, still forging through games though not sure when I'll have another for you, but thought I'd share some news.HostedGames has just released "After the Storm," which is a 185k word speculative adventure about you trying to put the world back together and survive after the climate crisis has done its worst to the world. You can try to build a better society, make a super-cure, a super-crop or just simply becoem a tyrant among other things with the options common to many survival games of postappocolyptic settings. This one doesn't seem bad though, so if you want, give it a try though I won't be getting to it for quite some time.just thought you guys should know.Bookrage.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's review of "Treasure seekers of Lady luck Hello all, It has been a bit since my last  review, but I have a new one for you guys this time. This one is the space sci-fi, golden age-style space piracy game "Treasure seekers of lady luck." In this one, you play someone who has wound up among a crew of very unique space pirates and adventurers and must decide whether to work kindly with the crew, work grudingly with them, or even betray them to the authorities. biasses: first, I have not played extensively in this game and I know simply from all the grayed-out options that I have not explored anything close to the full potential of this game and I will try to keep that in mind going forward in this review though a second opinion  down the road if I play this game again. I do like this sort of game though and like golden-age sci-fi games. genere: When this game gives itself out as a classic space-sci-fi game that seems to resemble golden-age sci-fi space pirate adventures, it isn't lying, though there are a lot fewer individual capers than you might expect for a 99k-word game. I know I have not explored the full extent of the game but when it talks of the things you do, the things I was not allowed to do as a player because of choices I made indicate that most of the stuff the game talks about in its advertisement are really there. I will tell you the way you get to be a number of sexualities in this game is rather intriguing, but more on that when we get to the romance section. Gameplay: This isn't quite the same sort of game as many games in the Choiceofgames line, there are few real stats and you simply have an area of expertise and your success in the game is more determined by making smart choices as a player rather than working with a wide array of skills and traits such as cunning or vigilance from Choice of the Dragon. USually each hapter, with a couple exceptions has a sort of puzzle where you move around a location trying to gain access to a particular location or accomplish a particular goal in a certain location, being able to move freely between parts of the location back and forth without being trapped in a sequence like in many games. This is the most noteworthy and highest point of the game, though the puzzles get a little redundant after a while and by the time you've reached the second one, you already see a pattern. You have instead of managing skills and what you are good at, will more have to work with the money you are given to buy supplies and use them wisely as well as avoiding personal harm to yourself, and sometimes organizing intrigues with or against the Crew of the Lady Luck. Characters: The characters on the Lady Luck are certainly unique, though they are not well-executed in that uniqueness. You have an agnostic scholar who is too alloof to properly gage, a mimic that is really hard to manage socially as I tried to be really nice to her only to do more and more damage to our relationship as we went. An over-sexualized scince officer with super-attractiveness traits (more on that in "Romance") And characters that are uninentionally characatures all around. The exceptions I would say are the captain and the religious insect security officer. They have some degree of depth. Your interactions with most of these characters can be rather exaggerated as well and the social aspects of the game are not very realistic or engaging despite relationships with the characters of the game being a major part of the story. Mechanics: The mechanics in this game are among the most straightforward I have seen in Choiceofgames. You have a collection of   equipment you can buy at different points in the game, your relationship with the crew members, both individually and as a group, a position among the crew, your area of expertise, and a couple simple questions like gender and name. These stats, unlock and lock various options as you play rather than unlocking and locking success options if you try to do something. If you are good at science, you will be able to do most science things automatically. It is easy to navigate your stats in this game.Romance: There is a romance option in this game, but it is executed so poorly, I wish there wasn't. First, I will say what is cool about it. There is a crew member that because of their unique species, appears as the gender of whatever the observer preers and this race is very interested in romantic companionship. That is something I had yet to see Choiceofgames do and I applaud this game on the uniqueness. The rpoblem arises with the way it is mentioned. Almost everything this character says is either sexual in language or the game mentions the closeness of this character thrills you or their voice (they change pronouns based on how you see the character)  send a surge of warmth through you or something of the sort. It is heavy-handed and ubiquitous enough that it is painful. I

Hello all, Just here to let you know of the latest release, and from a few things I've heard this might be worth looking into."Jolly good, Cakes and Ale" Has been released and it is a monster in terms of length, containing 1.2 million words. I imagine that is for the widely branching story they seem to be advertising.Anyway, this title is a stand-alone sequel to "Tally-ho" which I've heard good things about but have not played. You play a disgraced noble and you work in the "Noble Gasses" social club for everything from heists to pranks to boxing and a lot of other things in this self-described comedy of manners. Your servant is there to get you out of trouble and you are set to meet a very wide range of folks from writers, to criminals, to other members of your wacky family, and the like. this game seems a lighthearted game of escapades and schemes as you navigate an odd 19th century society game with lots of wack and crazy capers and disasters along the way while you try to manage the club, your public image, and your family.

Hello all,Just a bit of additional information for you from another Choiceofgames releases. This one's a hosted game.Score of a Lifetime" is a new relase of a short 43k adventure. In this one, a car has gone missing and there is a million dollar bounty on it where you must track down the car for the wealthy or sneak their fortune out from under them. There are also heavy options fo rromance, and this game self-describes itself as a romance novel. The game description says very little but it says the game can icnlude things like dating a used car salesman or a personal assistant, dining with the wealthy or stealing their fortune from them, and having a cross-country car chase. Not nearly as detailed as I would've liked but thyou now know about as much as I do.

@Bookrage, I've been out of this topic for a bit, though as we're in lockdown and I'm looking for attention grabbing games I probably ought to give some of the Cog/Hg titles a try, though as I was less keen on the first part of choice of the vampire as I said, I don't know if the further entries would be my cup of tea. However, I was wondering if you were considering writing anymore of your own reviews, I've enjoyed reading the ones you've done, both for games I've previously played, and games I might play in the future, and I've missed seeing them. Indeed, you might consider putting some in the articles room, that way I could link to them on the Cog page of the DB, but whether or not you do that, I hope you'll write some more.

Hello all, admittedly, this is not the best news update I can give you as I didn't get a notification e-mail about it like I usually do with everything else. Apparently, there is a new "Choice of the Vampire," volue called "St. Louis, the unreal city." I have only played the first part of "Choice of the Vampire." and I must say that although it improves on replays, it isn't my favorite or even near the top of my list. However, it isn't the worst game I've played either. If anyone has played more of "Choice of the Vampire," than I have, maybe you can say more, but for me, I'm not chomping at the bit to play this one, though I will once I get to it.I imagine it has the same standard fare as other Choiceofgames titles such as the choices for gender and sexuality, though in the original choice of the vampire you were limited to male and female. I can't say many specifics about this one because I didn't get one of their e-mail ads this time.sorry about that but decided to let you know what I know.

Hello all, just letting you know that "Fox Spirit: a two-tailed adventure" has been released as a new choiceofgames title.I this one you play a fox that either possesses or seeks the star orb that grants immortality. The game also centers around a lot of trouble between humans and foxes.Your powers seem to be based largely on Hu-xiens of Chinese myth and Kitsune of Japanese among others as you can us things like mind control, illusions, and shapeshifting among others to trick, blast, or otherwise move to victory by either forming peace with the humans or giving them grief as well as deciding the ultimate fate of the star orb. This one seems to have a wide array of paths you can take, as you can do everything from being a peaceful protector and diplomat on one end it seems like to being  adestructive and selfish tyrant who either gives heck to the foxes or the humans, or maybe both. It'll be a very long time before I get to this one, but anything that lets a player specialize in misdirection and illusions is a favorite of mine because I love being devious and deceptive. Also, this title and Choice of the Cat are on sale for the next week for those who want them.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all,a new hosted game has just been released. It is called "too different" and it is a science fantasy romp where you will travel through four unique lands as a member of one of 4 unique peoples.Other than some of the ideas of a priest, classmate, romance novelist, and a few other weird combos of characters as characters you can interact with, the description of the game is rather vague. Why the game is called "too different" is not clear, none of the lands are described in any detail and the evil group in the game is not described at all in the ad.I'd say that this one doesn't give me a lot to say other than it has the typical sex/sexuality options, it is 200k, and it is sci-fantasy. I'm sorry I can't say more but the notification e-mail that told me about this one says very little itself. If you want to try it though, it's a reduced price for the next week, but I can't say anything about it myself.Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all, another release bit of news for you guys, and this one is a big corperate partnership that some of you tabletop players might want to look into."Vampires: the Masquerade: Night Road" has been released. In this one, you play as a vampire courrier who delivers messages across the desert southwest of the United States. Recently, a vampire-hunting inquisition with modern tech has been using hackers and other tech to try and expose vampires to the world and hunt them down. You have to deliver secret messages across the southwest in a car you customize while also using your vampire powers to hunt, and perhaps even turn the situation in the southwest to your own personal advantage.I'm not a fan of the tabletop RPG and I'm not a vampire fan in general, but this one seems like it is going to be a big one. It is the first of three stand-alone crossovers with the Vampires: The Masquerade franchise that will be running and releasing until fall of next year.also I'd hurry up and buy it if you want it. If you purchase the game by 11:59 tomorrow night, send a copy of the receipt to choicofgames and you get a downloadable content pack for free. If you buy it on steam the receipt process is not necessary to get the free DLC.Just thought I'd share this one. I'm still working on choiceofgames but haven't gotten around to reviewing my next game yet due to life. I'll keep you guys informed though.

Hello all,two new hosted games have hit the hosted games selection that I wanted to tell you about. The first is Balance of Superpower where you play a superhero in school in 2075. You play as Rio Ramirez, a non-bianary character who possesses the powers of complete balance. You can date your classmates and train your powers in various ways to fight a bunch of supervillains that are about to make their big move. This seems good standard superhero fair although the game is specifically slated as a superhero romance novel. I'm also not sure how I would like being forced to have the name and gender I am forced to have in the story. I have nothing against non-bianary characters in stories, I just don't want to play one in an IF romance game because it feels weird to me when I like to get in my own head in the story and do things as I would.the second is "A sorcerer's story." And this is one where it is urban fantasy where you are a sorcerer who has to come out of hiding when your evil rival breaks his silence and uses his own magic to try and conquer the world. You get to specialize in different magical disciplines and you can either battle your rival, make a lot of different choices, or even join forces to become an evil overlord yourself. There doesn't seem to be anything particularly special about this one, but I think I like it better than the other option out of the two that have been released.

Hello all, just here to let you guys know that 4 titles have been made free in Choiceofgames. they are all of the sci-fi genrethe only one I have played is "choice of the star captain" which honestly, I can see why they would make this one free, because it isn't really worth paying for. I don't know of the others, but the other 3 arereckless space pirates, yet'is parole officer.ratings war.I have hard some good things about the last three, particularly ratings war and Yeti's Parole officer, but haven't played them myself. They are free to play though now with the option to pay to remove the ads.just thought I'd let you guys know.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all,Yet another new title has come out for Choiceofgames. This one is "Kidnapped: a Royal birthday." In this one, you are a royal who has been kidnapped and held in a tower as part of an evil plot to take the kingdom away from you. You have to be rescued by a strange team of knights, enchantresses, an amazon, and a few other quirky characters that might be just as dangerous as your captors. This game has a solid comedic feel with fantasy as the main genre and you deal with things like an army of drunken gnomes, the dreaded biclops, the chimera and other funny takes on fantasy staples. travel with your rescuers, deciding whether to be a damsel or a hands-on rough and tumble type, and find love with multiple characters, possibly even a goblin. You also get to chose whether to side with the aristocrats or the pasants.though you fill hte role of the beginning of a captive princess, like the vast majority of choiceofgames titles, gender and sexulaity are wide open for you so if you want to play a dude in distress, that's allowed too.Speaking of fantasy comedy games. there's a sale for a bit on "A Midsummer Night's choice" which I have already reviewed. The game comedically brings a lot of fey fantasy in as well as a lot of funny shakespeare jokes. not going to write my review again, but just sayingMidsummer Night's Choice is one of my favorites and I highly recommend it as something most would enjoy buying and playing for its solid writing, humor, and just plain fun.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all,a couple new hosted games releases to tell you about. The First is "The Floating city" which is a story about you living in New Sydney as the old city has sunk under rising sea levels. You are trying to make a career here and also you can uncover the mysteries of why the sharks have become suddenly afraid of the area at the request of your friend Cassandra (which I'm sure is a meaningful name) This one is 130k words and of the two it looks more interesting to me. The second game is Macabre Mansion. In this one, you wake up suddenly in a room covered in blood with no memory of how you got there. You have to escape the haunted mansion before it kills you. it's only 43k words and this one seems tired and cliche so not overly interested in this one.But just had to let you guys know in case you wanted to try them.

@133:Choice of Games is the company which handles professionally-published games. That is, the authors usually have some kind of writing credentials and the games get professionally edited. There is a separate imprint called Hosted Games, which handle games written by authors who do not have writing credentials, or games that do not fit into the image that Choice of Games would like to cultivate. They are under different omnibus apps, called Choice of Games and Hosted Games respectively. Zombie Exodus is a title published under Hosted Games.

Hi all,This is just to let you know that there's a new title out today. It is the sequel to another title, but still looks really fun. The game is "Werewolves 2: Pack Mentality" and it is the direct sequel to the original Werewolves game. After escaping an underground prison, you have to manage pack politics and fight human supremecists while also must try not to let an outbreak of feral-enhancing virus lead the pack to tear itself apart.Import your old character from the first game or start new. Also, there are a few new characters and love interests as well as the old favorites of the series. Just wanted to let you know that this new title is out. Although it will be a long time before I even get to the first werewolves game, I like werewolves and am drooling over what is promised in this one.

I particularly like the ship management chapter in choice of Broadsides.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

hello all, sorry but just got some more choiceofgames news for you all. "President Disaster" has just hit Hosted games. It's a short humorous novel where you are suddenly changed from intern to President Disaster's next chief of staff. You have to get people to election day and save the country, and the world from the worst candidate possible. You have to wrangle the press, the family, and make different diplomatic decisions to get through the couple of months up until election.I've been seeing this in some of the hosted games titles, but it seems there is some degree of randomization to this one as there has been for a couple of previous ones. If anyone tries that one out, let me know all about it so I know what to expect in 2042 when I finally start hosted games.I'll keep you posted.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's review of "Choice of Kung Fu" Hello all,I've had other things in my way so I haven't been able to put down my review of this game but now that I have finally completed it, I can give you my long overdue review.Genre: This is a game where you shouldn't judge the game by its title, with the name "choice of Kung Fu" it sounds like it is just some beat-em up fighting story. The game description however is very accurate and explains quite accurately the various things you can do in the story such as fight a demon, deal with the foreigners, train in Kung fu, start your own school, and try to earn the right to ask a deep question to the dragon sage, the main mcguffin for the entire story. If you read the whole description and list of cool things, you won't be misled by the story's contents.writing: the writing in this story is good and solid and really provides a backdrop that makes this game a rarity among the choiceofgames titles. It is not simply a fantasy/historical story that has been transplanted to an Asian setting, but actually works under different rules in the terms of the society and characters as you interact with them. I found while playing that me trying to behave as I thought I should actually offended many of the characters I was dealing with. This was my error, not the game's. Though I'm not a Christian, I was raised in the middle-class, WASP sort of background and though I no longer believe, I tend to extoll many virtues stressed by Christianity. In the East-Asian, Budhist backdrop with their set of values, things like evincing sympathy and pity and even degrees of mercy could be seen as offensive. For the most part though, the game is decipherable without any research or anything, and once you get it in your head that you aren't in the western European tradition, it is pretty easy to eliminate the "wrong" choices, of which along with things that are dictated by your stats, are sprinkled throughout the game as things that are almost certainly things you should not do.The characters that I met have a lot of personality and atmosphere, I particularly found Feng quite charming, and abbot Bao was a nice old man too. They really add to the story and are far from just information dumps or things to bounce your actions off of. There are definite moments of action, such as the battle for the monastery, a battle with a demon, and a challenge from the arch-villain of the story. but there are moments of calm and calculation that evince a feeling of contemplation and are a nice compliment to these actions too such as playing Goh with a ghost, learning poetry, and smoozing it up at a festival as well as making meaningful ethical choices. One thing I particularly liked about this title was how the European-style enemies were depicted. We in the western world tend to think of our history and culture as normative. This story does a good job of making the Europeans seem strange and odd to the reader, playing the part of the Chinese monk and gives the reader an interesting perspective on their assumptions. mechanics: This game is pretty good with mechanics, having stats like combat, magic, enlightenment, honor, status, and a list of relationships with important NPCs. A few things like endurance and Enlightenment are a bit tough to manage, but if you play carefully and just make smart choices, you'll be fine. There are 2 or 3 stats though that are Chinese words that I cannot translate, and I never learned what they meant. Even so, These words help in emersion in the setting and I'm going to call them a plus rather than a minus because they are meant to get you in a different cultural mindset than normal.Romance: As far as I can tell, there are at least two romantic interests in the story, your Rival and Feng. There are probably others but I would need to take some other paths probably to see them. This is one area where the game is lacking.  at least in the road I took (Feng) where my relationship was high, she asked me who I loved, I said her, and she got frisky. Other than that nothing really interesting came from it, but the romantic angle wasn't a big deal for me in this story because of everything else. railroading: It seems that chapters in this game are pretty set in stone, but there is a lot of choices you can make. When you go for training in the mountains, you won't get to do all the challenges in there on one playthrough. Likewise you can choose or not choose to become the heir of a kung fu master. There are also a lot of challenges at the end of the game where you get to make some big choices and there are tons of places in the game where you make choices that change major aspects of things going forward. The game has set events you will have to deal with, but large numbers of events with many ways to approach them. I am eager to replay the game and try other options.achievements: after a long drout in games I've

Hello all,Just wanted to let you guys know that there is a new Choiceofgames title out now. This one is "The 180 files: The aegis project." It's a 007-style superspy game where you play as a spy with a dark past who is going undercover to stop an evil organization, while trying to outrun your past and fight for justice, or strike bargains for your own benefit. This thing sounds very much like the 007 movies with glamour, gadgets, and lots of intrigue. and of course, all the typical diversity options that are in almost every choiceofgames title are present. just wanted to let you guys know. I also should hopefully be finishing "Choice of Kung Fu" in a short time and I'll have a review on it.

Hello all, more news from Choiceofgames. there is finally part two of War of the gods and you can play that one now as one of three classes trying to defeat the god of death and attain godhood. It seems pretty standard fantasy stuff but not sure since I hadn't played the previous one. Also, for those of you who want to celebrate pride month or simply want some games for cheap. They have released a pride bundle with several games that are supposed to have queer themes represented well in themhere is what it contains.Heroes Rise: The ProdigySLAMMED!Hollywood VisionaryThe Sea EternalThe Eagle's HeirHeart of the HouseDrag Star An Odyssey: Echoes of WarI'm not sure of most of those, but I have played, Hero's rise: The prodigy and it is pretty good. I've also played part of sea eternal, and didn't like it very much but I think that might have been my error rather than the game's.  In that one you play a mermaid/merman and the game has a lot of tricky political and relationship things that were hard for me to manage, I believe though that was more due to me.

I basically did the response that said that I wasn't surprised at it and didn't see a problem with it and it turned one of my rivals into a female character. because it said the monastery has a similar outlook and trains both men and women.

Wondering what things you answer in the first chapter that make it so your love interests are female. Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all, some hosted games news for you guys. There is a new title out today called "War For Mgincia." This game is the prequel to the "Great Tournament" games as well as "Swamp castle." The game is mostly  a medieval fantasy  kingdom simulator in which you fight off barbarians and use diplomacy, cunning, or brute force to win against other factions. This game has multiple difficulty settings, lots of achievements, and unlockable modes of play, at least according to the game advertisement.I am not sure how "The great tournament" or "Swamp castle" are, but this is another entry in their line-up for anyone who wants to give it a try. The game even bosts randomly generated stuff, but I'll believe that when I see it.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's review of "The Fleet" Hello all.I realize that I have not given you guys a review in quite some time. Her though is my review of a game I just completed after many delays.biases: I like games that make you think, and this one makes you do that a lot.Genre: The fleet is a game where you manage a fleet of space ships and you must fight back against the alien race that has taken your home planet. It has a strong tone of resource management and there is a lot of that in the game. The political stuff it mentions like growing your land into various types of governments didn't really seem to come into play. Either that is misleading or the fact that I was pretty strongly leaning towards a multi-world, multi-species coalition kept me from doing that but from what I saw, the focus they put on that in the little introduction to it is misleading.writing: In some ways, "The Fleet" is a weakly written story and few of the characters really came alive to me. There wasn't enough going on and most characters say a few things, sometimes out of the blue with little wind-up or logical reason that I could parse out, and the Alien Diplomat, your leutennant, another member of your race's diplomatic corps, and the aliens are largely cardboard cut-outs. They often say things like "Leutennant Damian looks at you sadly," or "Leutenant Damian says "I will always respect you."" but these characters do not act like human beings and they are more devices for giving you decisions to make. Part of this possibly comes from the fact your race is not assumed in this world and they want you to possibly, if you wish, imagine yourself as some sort of alien, as there is nothing in the game that says you need to be human. What fails in intracharacter interactions in this  game really succeeds in the space battles and resource management things. The game is written in such a way that you really have to think about the choices you make in order to win battles, not only in regard to each armed conflict you go through, but also preparing for upcoming problems as you can greatly deplete your resources if you make bad choices. The battles are quick and clipped, but it gives you the feel of split-second decisions  that you have to make as the commander. Also the choices it gives you in battle are dynamic and not just "send your fighters in' or "shoot the cannons" so it sounds like you are ordering clever maneuvers. mechanics: this game thrives on mechanics, especially in the space ship combat section. The combat-related stats such as "cannon coverage" "Pilot skills" and energy reserves come up constantly and are key to playing the game. The political side mirrors the poor political writing. The meanings of the political stats like military support, integrity, and deception, are easy to understand buy far more difficult to practice in the political parts of the game. This game wins on the combat side but is a decided loser in regards to the political side. It is often difficult to understand or navigate poltical parts of the game in sensical ways and you'll be unpleasantly surprised by the actions of the NPCs no matter how carefully you try to manage your moves in this regard due to murkiness.Romance: None. This game does not have romantic interests, and I'm not even sure it asks your gender at any time, sticking very carefully to gender-neutral language and using the 2nd-person as much as possible. Railroading: Having only played this game once so far, I can't say how much railroading it has in terms of a branching story, but it seems that there must be some. I did not go anti-alliance and I imagine, as the alliance backed me up so much, that the story would have been quite different had I taken another route. Also, my mining resources never came into play in the game. This makes me believe there is some branching area where they do. Also, as this game has heavy resource management aspects that really matter, your decisions really matter. Also the game is good at keeping your decisions meaning a lot even beyond their immediate aftermath. I destroyed an enemy city, which I thought was an enormous victory, only to have it become a diplomatic disaster later. Your choices definitely matter in this game, and you often really have to consider your actions.achievements: none: That's a real shame too, with a game with such options for choices you could make, such a focus on stats, which could also give you cool achievements, and many options to really change gameplay and your behavior, this game could've really benefitted from them. closing remarks: "The Fleet" Is the best space game on Choiceofgames I have played to date. As a game of politics, it fails miserably as characters are thin and boring, and also behave in ways that are very confusing. However, if you check my list it is relatively high up there. T

Hello all, there are a couple new games to play on hosted games I want to tell you about. The first of these is AI Aftermath. In this one you play asa  powerful psychic in search of your lover who is destined to fight off mealevolent AIs that threaten to destroy the world. In addition, this game seems like it has a lot of cool weird as it also involves a fairy creature and some other stuff you normally see more often in fantasy things if the description is anything to go by as reincarnation also seems to be part of it.This one's free with ads if you don't want to pay for it and paying to get rid of them is less for the next week.We also have "into darkness" where you travel from Victorian England deep into Africa on a race to obtain a hidden mystical gem.  and it seems somewhat based on both "heart of darkness" and some of the ledritch horror that was being written at the same time as the first title I mentioned. In this one, there doesn't seem to be any romance and in this one you have to identify as one of the two bianary genders. Unlike a lot of titles, this one actually has some ilustrations in the story, but that probably won't be a big deal for gameplay, though let me know if I'm wrong as I am not going to be playing this one for quite some time.just thought I would let you guys know.

Hello all. Some choice of games news and a bit of a backlog as I haven't been on here enough latelyFirst, there has been another  hosted game in the mix. Havenwood Crhonicles or something of that sort, Book II. This one is a continuation of your adventures as a detective who is working with an organization the polices magical beings, seemingly vampires in many ways as many of the members are vampires, and is a sequel to the first book in the series. I cannot say much personally to this one as I have not played the first title in this one.Speaking of vampires, I have some Choice of Games pre-news for you. "Vampires: The Masquerade" is coming to  to Choiceofgames. There will be a release either this summer or fall, one next spring, and another book (they seem stand-alone) in the fall of 2021. If you like that sort of stuff. Keep your eyes open for that one. I'll tell you of the books when they are actually released anyway. And for those of you who like fantasy, there is a fantasy sale on now for two titles.First, "fool" where you play as a magic-using clever court jester in a fantasy kingdom is on sale. It's an old, and from what I've heard, reasonably popular title though it is only a year or two old and I'm still playing titles from 2012 right now in my workthrough of all the options. But there's a new title as well. I've admittedly forgotten the title exactly but "The Squire's quest," "The Squire" or maybe "Squire's choice" has just gone live.In this one, you play as a young squire who must venture and rescue the royal prince who has been kidnapped by the fairies. Seems like something I'd like to try. Fool and the squire game are on sale until May 21st.Still working through "The Fleet" but perhaps I'll have it for you next week.sorry for being so absent but I have had obligations that have kept me from playing the books as much as I'd like.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all,Just thought I would tell you guys about the latest entry in the Choice of Games series "Mask of the Plague Doctor."I this one you are in a small town in a fantasy setting where a plague called the waking death, which keeps people from sleeping is ravaging the town and it is up to you to deal witht he problem by either curing the town that is under quarantine or by destroying the town if it doesn't work. You can take traditional, academic, or mystical methods to deal with it, and you'll also have to deal with political factions that want rebellion or you might have to deal with public panic and the like. This is a nice long one at 410k words, and I'm admittedly a little torn about this one. With its length, I could see it might have been a project long in the works but it gels quite well with the typical global situation. I'm not sure whether to see that as a profit grab by Choiceofgames, a legitimate way to handle the situation in fiction, or something else. I'll get to this game but at the rate I'm going, Carona will just be a bad memory by the time I get to it and maybe distance will give me a different perspective than those who play it now. Anyway, not sure whether I should love or hate the closeness to real-world stuff going on here. Whether you guys play this game or not, want to hear your opinion on this concept.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

a second look and full review of "To the City in the clouds." Hello all,I have played "To the City in the Clouds." and some of my oppinions have changed about it. Normally on my "Second look," segments, I'll just say what has changed about my views. However, I do not feel that my first review of the game was complete enough so I am going to write a full review now.Genre: To the city in the Clouds sets itself up as an archeological adventure featuring you exploring a city in the Andes. It labels itself as a supernatural story, yet this only comes into play on certain occasions and many playthroughs have nothing unrealistic about them in terms of what happens. Also, the time you spend in the city is a real let-down, only lasting a very brief chapter.Writing: This game has you playing as a daring archeologist who wants to know the truth of the city in the clouds. In doing so, you will have to deal with drug runners, collumbie guerilla soldiers, the supernatural forces of the city in the clouds, and typical jungle threats like disease and wildlife among other things I haven't yet seen. The variety of things in the game and how they are described is pretty impressive. The writer also did their research and know of some rather obscure south American and Mexican things. On the other hand, the game's tone can be rather crasse at times, talking often about behind-closed-door things between students and students or assistants rather often, whether they are referring to you if you go that route, which is an option, or whether it is referring to other characters in the story. They also present several rather sexualized characters throughout the story, with a set of three women who are the love intrests, being there pretty much for a brief and casual affair if you want it, and even if you don't if you make certain choices leading up to that point, and often when you are talking to characters like reporting your findings if you survive the game, there are some major sexualized options there as well. Asside from the rather intrusive amounts of sex in the story or suggestions of it, some of the character interactions are pretty good, and as I said, the author does their homework and aside from having an unusual number of sleezballs, there's a degree of realism to the story. The game however leads up to the city in the clouds but does not spend enough time there or a meaningful-enough time there to make the lead-up in the story worth it.mechanics: interesting but sometimes murky. The Choice-ofgames titles often use a mix of words and numbers to display stats. This is one of the first titles I've seen that uses words almost exclusively. The ranks and skills you have in various skills are displayed by often a rather langy term related to the stat in question, usually having a couple for high and low and average. Some of the stats they have for you are a bit strange though, like asking what your spirit animal is, with some rather bizarre choices. I've seen one use of this in the end of the game, but can't trace any others. Also, the game is almost 8 years old. Combined with my relative inaptitude with slang myself if it is obscure and such, sometimes I had trouble deciphering some of the word labels. However, I sort of liked the textual descriptors even so and thus I wouldn't say taking this route is a bad thing, though sthe game shows that one must be careful that you keep it understandable to your readers.Railroading: A mix of the good and the bad on this subject. On my second playthrough, I took very different paths and found that the nature of several of the chapters in this short game change entirely or almost entirely based on your choices. I chose just to have a brief stop in one place and met someone which drastically changed much of the following game. Also, even some minor choices mattered as the color of a jacket I chose changed something later and something else I did and didn't take also changed the action. On the other hand, sometimes it will ask you questions about what you think or want to do, only to put a brief "why you can't do this" explanation and then shunt you back onto the tracks. This is particularly true when you are actually in the city. So this one is a mixed bag.Romance: There are a few options, if you want to call what is offered, "romance." You have the opportunity to meet 3 people who are more quick and cheap sexual conquests if you pursue that. If you choose a certain set of choices in the beginning, you even don't really have a choice if you want to get involved with them, but they serve little narrative purpose and don't really add anything to the story. I have however, seen two of the options if you like women, and they are different from one another, with one being brainy and cute and the other being a sort of sexxy tomboy type. However, don't expect anything meaningful, ultimately rewardi

Hello all,Yesterday "Heart's Choice" released a new game "Never Date Werewolves" and unlike the other titles, this one looks semi-interesting to me and if I had to pick a heart's choice game that looked cool to me, it would be this one at this point. You are gender-locked into being a female werewolf, though sexuality isn't locked and you have to manage your pups hin helping them learn to hunt and do other things, while also managing to try and find a love in your busy, single-parent life in Lyones France. I admittedly like werewolves but this one doesn't seem as ridicuolous or (to me) unpleasant to play as some of the other titles and the premise seems more appealing.I have no intentions of playing this title, but thought I would share it with you guys anyhow. Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

a second look at "Choice of the vampire" hello all, I would like to make a few short comments on "Choice of the Vampire," as I have replayed it a few more times since my review. I think my review is still a proper assessment of the game's merrits and demerrits, but I would like to make a few comments on what I have realized since then as I have played.I said that the chapters were not easily divided and there were very few of them. This is true but having played a number of different playstyles through this story now, It's a result that the story is in fact quite branching and that some parts of the story even send you to different geographic locations based on what you choose to do.Second, I encourage you to play with a variety of creators, although some parts of the story overlap depending on what you choose to do, some interactions throughout the story are very different and varied based on who you choose. Languages also matter and the story has a pretty good handling of skills and languages you possess. My last game was a sort of game where I didn't learn English until towards the very end and almost missed that opportunity too and that lack of English wasn't a mere cosmetic inconvenience either. I think that the game still focusses on lust too much and there are times where it seems to really ham-handedly force changes in your actions whether you want to or not, but the game has a much more varied amount of choice and differences based on playstyle than I belived at first.I am going to review my list and if this game is below "Choice of the Star Captain" I'm probably going to have to swap their positions. Coming soon, "A Second look at "To the City in the Clouds"" which will include a full review as I realize I did not provide a sufficient one last time, mostly because I didn't realize that the game was short in length, but quite broad in scope within the short and not too numerous chapters.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all,There's a new release in the Choice Of Games line I thought I would tell you about. This time it is "the Blackstone Academy for the Magical arts" It's a young adult title but I'd still give it a try.You discover you're a sensor and find your way to the Blackstone academy, which is a high school for magicall-gifted students and you need to learn your magic, while also deciding whether magic will be spread to the world at large or locked up in more secrecy than ever before while you also compete in sky sailing, manage your friends and peers, pick a mentor, and deal with other magical crises at the school. It does seem to have a heavy Harry Potter vibe to it, but I'll tell you that doesn't bother me as although Harry Potter is good, it is not the first magical school for kids book, nor will it be the last and so the fact that you have some of that going on doesn't bother me. Until a week from today it is 40% off so if it sounds cool to you, you can snatch it up.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's Review of "A Midsummer Night's Choice" Hello allI am going to bring you my review of the loosely-shakespeare-inspired title of "A Midsummer Night's Choice" today, and this is definitely a title with possiblities.Biasses: I love Shakespeare and I'm also a bit of a snob.Genre: This game is a fey-based fantasy story with a lighthearted approach with a lot of Shakespeare easter eggs and lampshades. Although it is called "A Midsummer Night's choice" it also has a good deal of "As you like it" and even a bit of "Julius Caesar," in it as well as others. writing: This title is built around relationships in many ways and almost all your actions are about your interactions and feelings towards others. Your Father wants you to marry someone who is distinctly unattractive, but you have to be political to get what you want out of the story. Just like Shakespeare's plays, the story is built in a five-act structure and just like many of Shakespeare's plays, a major part of the plot is a play within the story. Whether you are dealing with your flippant joker of a friend, Princey, or dealing with the handsome/pretty noble Morgan, or dealing with the fey court, your actions heavily are based around your dealings with various characters. Also, the characters in the story are wonderfully diverse in personality. The Quixotic (literally) bravaudo of the maroon knight is far different from the intrigues of Morgan, the pranks of Princey, or the uptight, grouchy bossiness of your father, or the wacky, well-meant but utterly disastrous acts of one of the guards. However, although I have pointed out the similarities to Shakespeare, you don't have to be a fan to enjoy this title. There is  just enough going on with the relationship politics in the game that somethinng that will explain the Shakespeare Easter eggs if you want. But the fleeing from your father to avoid an unpleasant mairage, your wandering in the forest, your battle with a foe I will not reveal to you, and your intrigues in politics both fey and mundane, this story stands on its own even if you know nothing about Shakespeare.Mechanics: This story has some of the crispest and most understandable mechanics I've seen. Courage, Charm, and Enchantment, among others are easy to understand in this story and it is simple to figure out what they do and when they are coming into play. Humor, intelligence, and all of that is easy to grasp. Likewise, your relationships are easily measured with percentages and although sometimes I like words, this game is one where percentages are better. Since so much of this game is being politic and tactful, and a lot of your success hinges on keeping at least a couple of the relationships high, being able to keep track of the changes for good or ill so easily is a good one. Romance: I haven't played enough to see the whole gammit of relationships, but I know both Morgan and Princey are romanceable, as is the person your father wants you to marry and perhaps picolito. The game lets you choose the gender of Princey and Morgan at the start of the game, and then I believe the game probably assigns gender to the undesirable mairage option (though there is more to this person than meets the eye) and picolito perhaps later based on your choices with Morgan and Princey early on. I know for certain Morgan and Princey are rmonaceable and they are night and day, both in that Morgan is dark while Princey is a wild blonde, and also that Morgan is subtle and more subdued while Princey is a wild child of sorts. Railroading: This is a majorly wide-open title with a branching story. While it largely sticks to set challenges like many titles, the ways you can approach the challenges are legion. The ways you can succeed and fail are also legion. The play in the fourth chapter makes you make a couple dozen choices and it has a definite impact for the rest of the game. Also, I rmember failing to get out of some bonds in either chapter two or three, not thinking much of it only to have it completely change the ending of the story ina  weird, but wonderful way that those who have heard a lot of non-sugar-coated fey stories would recognize. You should treat this game as though ever decision you made was going to completely change your ending. The state of your relationships, which is of your own making, is also a major component of how things go, so even beyond romance, your relationship with the proposed love interests is something you'll definitely be impacted by. Achievements:Not a huge number: but definitely worth playing for. in terms of achievements, it is a quality over quantity situation. Getting a lot of these achievements is hard work. Getting a perfect score when you do the play, dealing with the hidden foe in certain ways or dealing successfully against some tough stuff the fairy queen puts you through, as well as a number of things relating to e

"The kidnapped Prom Queen" is one where you and fellow members of the Prom committee are trapped in the school gym and must solve the puzzles of the sdistic mastermind who kidnapped the prom queen. Gang land noire is not a favourite ethos of mine, but I do like post apocalyptic communities and playing as animalistic bio weapons who have formed a society does sound like a society I'd be interested in exploring. Furries I can take or leave depending upon the quality of the story, but this one sounds good. I'll also say, the sexuality  choice is something that appeals to me, I've already mentioned in this topic the point my female straight character started a relationship with another woman in Zombi exodus, something which I actually liked since it just flowed so naturally from the story even though I'd not set out to play a gay character to begin with.

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

bookrage's review of "Welcome to Morautown Hello all, welcome to another one of my reviews and this time I'm reveiwing "Welcome to Morautown," which is a very  unique title that has a lot ot offer.genre: not sure how I would describe it, it is sort of a post-appocolyptic, gangland, noir, gangland, furre game. Those sound like they don't go together but the fact that they are so mixed and mixed, frankly, quite well, that it gives a unique experience even if you only like one of the above.description: In this game, you play as a "morau" an animal created to be a weapon in a previous global war by one of the world governments. Whether you are a Russian Bear morau, a south American Rat morau, or one of the great cats of Africa, you have a wide variety of choices ot make from canine, rodent, ursine, and feline choices. You now live in a crappy ghetto neighborhood now that the war is over and your usefulness is over. Writing: I'm not a fan of furres, but the fact that you have to negotiate gangland politics, possibly stop terrorist attacks, or even become a terrorist yourself and you are doing so also with aspects of civil rights movements going on here, the game has a lot ot offer. The game generally has a gritty, gangland or noir feel to it, which I think attests to how good it is that you can hold that up when you are essentially an anthropomorphic animal and yet the story can still be dealt with in a straight way and doesn't really get silly. There are four major characters you interact with heavily, two humans and two moraus, one of each of the traditional genders. But all and all, the game keeps a good and serious tone and you will feel the grit even though you're an animal and I felt, even on subsequent playthroughs a lot of edginess when I was making my choices. You get worried and the setting does come alive well. MOrautown is creepy and looks like a pretty rotten place to live and this is reflected even in some of the NPCs. The characters, atmosphere, and consistant tone really make this one shine. The gangsters are scary, the cult is terrifying, and some of the biggoted humans are real jerks.mechanics: This one is somewhere in the middle of quality in terms of mechanics, with some being excellent and some being rather hard to parce out. A lot of things like strength, speed, and stealthiness are easy to figure out. Also, there is a degree of wildnesss and "city hall" which sort of describes where on the continuum you are between human and animal, how selfish you are, and whether you care about the community or just yourself, though the personality traits are harder to understand, but this is not unusual for Choice of Games titles and I've seen far worse. A lot of your physical stats work from a starting template depending on what animal you choose to be. For example, rats are very stealthy and very fast, while wolves are pretty tough but can't stealth to save their lives and bears are big and strong, but slow as heck. The relationships with the important NPCs are expressed in a few sentences which I think is a definite plus. the one downside is that i don't remember any indicators of how injured you are even though you can get injured pretty badly in the story (though I have never died) Maybe I missed it but that is one omition.romance: There are four romantic interests in the story, centered around the two humans and two moraus you deal with most heavily. You pick your sexuality at the start of the game, but this does not change their genders. For those who might want to explore self-discovery in sexuality in the course of the story, you can do so as even if you say you are straight at the start of the story, this doesn't lock romantic options with same-sex npcs. This is the first and to this point, only time I have seen this in a Choice of Games title, and while I did not take advantage of it myself and don't have much interest in doing so, I am glad it is here in this way and I think I would be happy seeing it elsewhere as well. The humans are a little bland, though Chris Westbrook has her charm, but the Moraus have more going on. I would say though that the romance, despite definite implied sex, would not weird someone out if they aren't into furres, (I'm not into furres and it wasn't weird. to me)railroading; The game has a definite set of challenges and events, and the 12 chapters are pretty set, but there are a few branches where the events and content of a couple chapters can change pretty drastically depending on your choices. So far, I have only gotten mixed endings that still ahve a pretty noir feel to them, but there are definitely a lot of varied endings you can get, depending on specific choices you make and your ending relationships with various groups and NPCs. One part of the game changes very greatly depending on whether you use a drug and another changes heavily depending on how you talk to the polic

oh awesome! Thanks for letting us know…I actually liked Hollywood visionary so much that I bought it, Really good scene setting in that story, it makes the characters come alive and highlights an often overlooked but important section of American history.Plus it just inherently has a lot of replay value and it's legitimately difficult to get a good ending.I thought the characters (especially the main character) in showdown at Willow Creek were a bit flat and devoid of personality. The story also just seemed rushed and scattered, with the author trying to focus on too many things at once.  The mystery itself just never really pulled me in either, Although I thought the engineer character was pretty cool.Superheroes were never really my thing to begin with, so while I respect the writing (Especially with characters) in heroes rise, and the gadgets and powers are pretty cool, I just had a hard time following everything Quick enough or feeling like I belonged in the setting.I am excited to try these new ones out!

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Hello all.Just thought I would share the latest news out of Choiceofgames. On the omnibus apps and on their website they have just made three more titles free to play for a limited time. "The Fleet" "Nola is burning" and "Choice of the Petal Throne" are now all free to play for a short time for more options for those of us who are strapped for cash or just want to see if we would actually want to pay to have access to these games. I have not played any of these titles so I am unable to speak to their quality or how much I have enjoyed them.

For myself, I thought to the city of the clouds was the worst of the choice of games that I played, superficial descriptions, far too much stat choosing, and very little actual archaeological adventuring from what I remember, indeed you barely explore the actual lost city at all. Indeed, imho quality wise this one is rather less good than several of the free adventures.Maybe I wouldn't find it s bad if I replayed, but of games that are on my replay list, that one is very far to the bottom.

This one does seem a little weird and I admit there is probably a lot I didn't see. This is my first impression but if future plays (and there may be future plays) cause me to adjust my opinnion of it, I will write a second, updated review. I'm running out of games I have played before. And soon, my game reserve is going to run out. This is one I just finished, but I agree I may have to eat my words when I  play it again. For future notes, I will write new reviews if replays cause me to change my opinion.

not your best review so far, in my opinion you should probably play it again before reviewing it and choose a totally different path this time. this just seems a bit rushed, and since it is a Choice of Games title, it's hard to get A proper look at the story without playing it at least twice. That said I understand that you were not too excited about this book in the first place...

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's Review of "To the City in the Clouds" Hello all, Today I am bringing you "To the City in the Clouds" Which I just happened to finish for the first time yesterday. Biasses: I got a rather sudden unhappy ending from this one and thus some of what I say might come from me being a sore loser.Genre: This title tries to be an archeological, supernatural adventure game. It doesn't really take your academics seriously, is rather crasse at times with how it talks, and also, although it has the "supernatural" tag, the way I played it showed that it had a lot less supernatural stuff to it than it claims. Everything that happened to me could be explained with non-supernatural explanations. The game is often crasse and crude as well, which is unfortunate.Writing: Initially, I was thoroughly repulsed by this game by the content and tone of the first few chapters. It had rather crude and nasty humor, and threw sex at me a little too much. I admittedly gave my guy the flaw that he well... liked the ladies, but the way they sent it at me was thoroughly unpleasant to read. Also, the actual time you spend in the city is disappointing and the amount of detail given to it. You really only spend one chapter there, though admittedly, the game only has a few chapters. The tone as I have said is raw and uncomfortably blunt and rough, and much of the story I found pretty hard to read. But I will say what this game has going for it as well. The second half of the story gets significantly better. It by no means gets good, but there is nothing particularly nasty about the back half of the story. Also, the game frequently makes you have to think about what you're going to do. It also inserts the FARC in a way I like rather than just having generic Columbian guerillas or something, which gives it a little authenticity and realism. All and all, I can't say I enjoyed the writing because of the first half of the story though.mechanics: Interesting and something worth a much better game. Rather than having percentages or numbers as many  titles do, descriptors were used almost exclusively to describe your stats, which is something i have not seen done before. It even keeps track of your appearance and such and the items you get along the way to the city. (more on that on the Railroading section.)  This sometimes made things much easier to understand, and because slang is frequently used and some slang I am not good with, it made some thing murkier. This is a good instructive stat screen though if you'd want to do it this way to see what works and what does not.Romance: Very little in the way of Romance on the playthrough I did, but a lot of sex, and a lot of sex rather brutishly thrust in your face by the author. I like romance and getting my hero with a pretty girl at some point, but a lot of this looked like a bad prno movie to me (no actual description of the acts, but a lot of female characters and my characters acting like the actors in such films just having a bare-bones interaction before sex or casually having sex with anyone.) If I play this again, if I can avoid romantic interests at all, I will. Also, when I did choose a woman I liked at the one point where you get to choose what she looks like, I didn't even get the choice on whether I wanted to make love to her or not, the same happened earlier in the story in just some casual mentions too.Railroading: Most of the time, not too bad. In terms of nature of many of your items, you get some customization options and you even get to choose pretty heavily what you look like. When you do get to pick if you have a lover back home, you get to say which kind, and you get to pick from a few options later for what passes for a sex interest/object in this story too. There's a few points where I made a choice, such as one with an artifact, where they essentially said "This will never fly back home and pass academic muster." but for the most part, I felt that my decisions mattered. They even ask a decent number of "how do you feel" questions to help work the mood, and for the most part, they are responsive to what you say. They even ask several times what the threat seems to be. With only one playthrough, I can't say exactly whether that changes the nature of the threats or whether that is just for your opinion.Achievements: none: Even if this game did have them, not sure how happy I'd be to run through this thing multiple times to get them.  but presumably some could be created for dealing with various threats or succeeding or failing with or without various items or skills. Closing Remarks: I once believed that "For Rent: Haunted House" was an exceptionally bad game, but the bar has been significantly lowered by this one. Choices really matter, the mechanics are intresting, and the back half of the story isn't bad. However, the crass and blunt tone, with no subtlet

Re: Bookrage's choiceofgames reviews

Bookrage's review of "Diabolical" Hello all! Today I am bringing you a review of the first Choiceofgames title I played after a brief stint in "Choice of the Dragon."Biasses: I love games where you can play villains and also this was my true introduction to Choiceofgames so I have definite fond memories of it.Genre: This is a humorous game where you play as sort of a mix between a supervillain and to a small extent, you have a bit of a bond villain thing going on as well. What the game advertises though is exactly what you get.Writing: In terms of plot, If you've seen movies like "Megamind" or "Dispicable Me," This game won't really surprise you all that much with certain plot elements. That said, a friend described this game and its plot as "predictable but awesome," and I aagree. Unlike a lot of games on Choiceofgames that try to be funny, this one actually definitely succeeds in producting a lot of laughs. The bickering ex-spouses anchoring the news, some good pop culture references that will probably stand the test of time, memorable characters, and a general silly style that is both satirical and humorous make this gamebook fun to read not only as a gamebook, but a book in itself. The story isn't always cutting edge in terms of plot, but the execution is beautiful. Also, if you are leery of playing a villain, you can be a pretty likeable one, and a lot of really bad stuff that no decent person would want to do is off-limits for in-world reasons. You'll be a bad guy, but you are easily able to be a likeable one.mechanics: Not as clear as some games, but far clearer than others. The technology, terror, and military-based stats, which tie to the three archetypical villains you can take are pretty obvious. The ones relating to things like your personality such as selfishness, theatricality, and archism aren't always as clear, thougha  play or two of this game will make them intuittive. What is particularly fun in this game is the preparation point system. You get these for making smart choices and can spend them to basically get an instant success on certain challenges. It's a simple system but one that works pretty well.romance: The game has three romantic interests that they ask you about in the beginning of chapter three in a pretty funny way. Depending on your choice, it changes the genders of three NPC characters. It doesn't have an "I'm not interested in anyone," but you are free to only go as far as you'd like with any of them. I'll have to say I'm rather partial to Jane Steelheart. I'm not sure if the last name is "Steelheart, or "Stealheart" but for me, either spelling would be an accurate way to describe her and she's perhaps the most compelling romantic interest I've seen in a COG title. I know the Drake is romanceable but have never played in a way that she likes me. Also there are mechanics in place that having a good relationship with one of the NPCs can help you actually triumph in many places. Also, although Steelheart I feel is head and shoulders above the other two, these three are some of the most compelling characters I've seen in any game in terms of depth and how alive they feel.railroading: The game is like many choice of games titles where each chapter is pretty much a pre-determined challenge, but there is a ton of room to move around in these challenges. The only real exception is your villainous road trip. There is a lot of options about what tourist attraction or thing you want to play havok with and what you do wtih each, but your adversary remains exactly the same, as do most of the reactions with this person regardless. Even so, you'd only feel that if you replayed it a lot.Achievements: Oh my God Yes! If you can do something in this game in the cours eof play, there's an achievement for it. Everything from all 5-6 possible happy endings to the game to using certain ill-advised strategies in certain places to having certain stats above a certain level are in here. The game has a lot of replayability even without the achievements, but for having a long dry spell in games without achievements, this one more than makes up for it.Closing remarks: Diabolical is on the top of my ChoiceofGames list and replaying it hasn't made it any worse. There are of course, great titles I have not seen, but this one will be hard to unseat. It's easy to play so beginners shouldn't have too much trouble with it, the writing is excellent, the story might not be super-surprising, it is however good, and the game has a lot to offer anyone. I would recommend this title above any others I have seen so far.

hello all, just a little update that today hosted games released "The Soulstone War" which has you taking up a classic fantasy archetype and also pairing it with a magical crystal called a soulstone and being tied to fate to save the world. There are I think 6 different Gems and 8 different weapon types you can use and all and 3 fantasy paths to take.Although I still have a lot to do before I can start on Hosted games, This one sounded pretty cool. Pretty standard epic fantasy, but with nearly half a million words and the way they made it sound, this one sounds exciting.
