Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

I've thought about posting this to the MagicTCG subreddit. From what I've experienced, there are plenty of programmers (Java and otherwise) who play MTG and might be able to help.If this project gets anywhere towards complete, you could use your existing knowledge (and any other contributing programmers) to try accessifying Mage or X-Mage.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hey,I'm glad you're enjoying it. The layout is definitely a little confusing, but most of the non-game parts of the UI at least have reasonably consistent structures. Things like drafts, deck editing, and so on are all handled in a similar way. There's definitely some room for improvement, I just haven't looked at the code for a while and am not as great with Java accessibility stuff as I wish I were.

Recording a how to play would be a very cumbersome task, since it involves talking about basic game mechanics, themes, rulings and situations. However, there are plenty of introductory guides on how to play, many of them written in text, others on youtube. I don't know what your main language is, but probably there are some in it, definetly if it is english. When you read the rules and understand how to play, then Forge is your next pick. And yes, using NVDA's golden cursor you can definetly play it just with your keyboard.

I suspect if you had a sighted person to compare them the screens would look very similar.I can't really suggest a workaround other than trying to re-adjust the hotspots. I never found a satisfactory answer but it didn't happen predictably for me either.Sorry for the lack of insight here.

stormdragon2976,You'll definitely need to use Orca commands a lot for navigation. I haven't really used it much, but you basically need to review the screen a great deal instead of using tab and shift-tab, because the game isn't really designed for mouseless control. See some of my earlier posts in this thread for information on the screen layout. Good luck. If you want to turn off the music you can copy my preferences file, also linked earlier, though I'm not sure where it would go on LInux, possibly somewhere in ~/.config.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

frastlin,I've tried to figure out how to handle this, I admit. The best idea I had was to try and make each separate area of the display a tab stop, because otherwise you'd be tabbing past a ton of cards to get where ever you were going. That would require you to use arrow keys to, say, browse cards in your hand or on the field, which would need to be added. It's a lot of fiddling given the current structure of the codebase.

HEy,Okay. This one I definitely know what the issue is. THere's a thing called card overlays, which weuse for reading card name and such. It's used all the time by sighted players because some of the actual card images are too small to read easily.I think the shortcut is ctrl+shift+O or ctrl+alt+O, but you can also toggle the overlays in the menus somewhere. I recommend always playing with them on.Hope this helps.

I can find the place where they should be, like the label "Your Hand", but when I navigate to the side to see the cards it delays for an instant and simply jumps to my enemy's field, as if my hand were empty (it is not). If you have a number-pad, try NVDA-numpad-7, and NVDA-numpad-1. If you don't, try nVDA-page-up and NVDA-Page-down.I hope either of these solves the weird navigation issue you're having.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

zklineI solved the issue with golden cursor, but I still can't manage to navigate the game anymore. Until last night I could use NVDA+Shift+Arrows to run through all the screen, from the Home and Deck Editor options all the way to the prompt, going through my field, my hand, etc. With golden cursor marking some marks I could really play it.Now navigation through objects seems to be limited by small blocks. Over the Start Game button, for example, I can't move anywhere, it says First and Last as if it were the only object. Then I Shift-Tab to the preconstructed decks list, and then it allows me to navigate around a couple controls linked to this list. In the menu to choose game types such as Commander and Planechase the object nav runs only these options, telling me "First" and "Last" when I try to go ahead with NVDA+Shift+Arrows. And inside a match there is no command able to navigate objects outside the Prompt-CardText-OkButton, any attempt returns "First" and "Last" as if these were the only objects available. It's like all controls are enclosed in blocks and object nav cannot leave a block. It rendered the game pretty much unplayable.I reinstalled JRE, I disabled and re-enabled Java Access Bridge, and the forge preferences file you provided is in the correct appdata folder. I really don't know what else to try to make this workk again. The version I'm running is the 1.6.37 snapshot, re-downloaded today from the link on post #1. The NVDA is latest version, so is the golden cursor.I apologize for the inconvenience, you already did a hell of a job making this fully playable, but I honestly have no one else to ask. Forge brought me back a lot of fun that I missed a lot, and now I'm really trying not to loose it.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

vcaparica,It sounds like you might have accidentally set the app to full screen mode. I don't remember if there's a shortcut for this, but suspect it's one of the function keys, possibly F11 or something like that. Did you, in your troubleshooting, remove the FOrge folder from your app data folder? That would reset all preferences to defaults and let you start from scratch.Hope this helps,Zack.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

zklineI don't know if you ever got this problem, but I've been dealing with this since last night and all my ideas are over.I've been playing Forge for weeks, using NVDA object nav and Golden Cursor. Last night, after a match, it all suddenly ceased to work. Golden Cursor cannot access or create new shortcuts in the Forge window, when I try to do it, the application switches window focus and the shortcut is added to another window. When I try to activate shortcuts already set it also changes window focus. Also the object nav keys (wich continue working on other apps) cannot navigate outside the Prompt and Card Text boxes. The game went from nearly accessible and fully playable to completely inaccessible. I reinstalled JRE, Forge, NVDA and all addons, to no good.Any ideas?

vcaparica,To be honest I'd welcome any help other people are willing to provide. I'm not very familiar with Java in large-scale code bases like this, the work I've done is very small scale compared to what would be ideal. That being said, there's a Forge Discord server where the developers hang out, and I'd definitely suggest anyone interested in the app join it. Here is an invite link for anyone interested. There is an #accessibility channel but it requires people with a developer role, I believe.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

You said that releases have been taking a lot of time, but the current card database covers cards up to Core Set 2021, which was released in late June 2020, not so long ago. Is there a way to update card database without new releases? The only card that gave me this problem of choosing, up to now, is "Opt", a blue spell that lets you draw two cards, then send one to your hand and the other to your library. The interface tell me to drag cards up and down to choose, but this is a little complicated to do, I've been running on luck when I need to pick.I've been thinking about all the fun this application has been giving me. I am not a Java programmer, but I know a bunch of them. If I eventually manage to gather some of them to help pushing forward the accessibility work you've already done, would you be willing to give them initial instructions as to how to keep improving the application's access? I know this means some work for you, and I totally understand if you're stuck with other stuff right now, but this application have given me hours of fun that I didn't get in the last 10 years, I am really interested in making this a thing to as many other blind people as I can.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

vcaparica,I'm not sure about the latest snapshot, I believe that there's a bug in the automatic build scripts they use at the moment, so it's been a long time between releases. That being said, any future release will have the same accessibility improvements, as they've already been merged.I remember there was some confusion around how to pick cards for certain effects, as they opened windows without moving the focus to them. There are two UIs for doing this, as I understand it, one which is a little easier for us to use but less flexible.I'll try to address this at some point. It would help to know which spells you were having issues with so I can set up a deck with them.Glad it's mostly working well for you.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

zkline,I believe I finally grabbed it. I've learned how to build decks, played a couple dozen matches. The only thing I couldn't do yet is to choose between cards to pick or shuffle back (such as in the Opt spell). Some other questions I would like to ask:Is this snapshot still the latest? When eventually the master dev branch at git.cardforge.org releases an update, say with the new Zendikar Rising set, will it be available at the snapshot link you provided at post #1? Will it keep the great accessibility improvements you made? Also, have you or anybody here successfully played an online game? I am trying very hard on this to play with sighted people in my houses WAN, but to no success. I forwarded port 36743 in my wifi modem, then I open Forge, launch the server and send the address it gives me. We tried with both the online and the internal addresses, but the client says it's connected, yet the server doesn't say anything. Any clues on that?Again, thanks a lot for the work you've done, I'm having a lot of fun.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

SubDragon,Glad you got it working. All I can say is that a lot of the opening UI, at least, is accessible with tab, and where it isn't you can use NVDA object navigation. You'll be doing that a lot in any case. There are basically two deck selectors, one for you and one for the AI. You can choose to get your deck from the program's list of pre-built ones, or from the internet, or randomly, or what have you. The button at the bottom of the window lets you start the game. There are also controls near the top for choosing a Draft game, Quest mode or whatever, but these are not in the tab sequence. You'll need to use object nav to access them.Hope this helps.

You can just grab the regular snapshot from the Forge site, and run the .Jar file. THere's a script  in there to make it easier. The one gotcha is that the menubar at the top of the window is weird with Mac Java's implementation, but otherwise it behaves reasonably well. Windows is probably easier in some ways but I've played games with both systems.

I did not see this game before! I will have to check it out.I have played Magic the Gathering amongst my friends for a few years, first just brailling cards, then I started working on a python application for searching cards and playing the game. It has been a long process and it is definitely not done. It does not enforce rules,, it just keeps track of things for you in short. Giving you different zones, and providing you the ability to manipulate cards in a virtual space. It does not provide network connectivity yet, it just shows your battlefield. We would just play each other over the phone since none of us could see the battlefielld anyways, it did not matter.I may check this project out for ideas.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hi.First of all, congratulations and thanks a lot for this effort. I have managed to understand most of the UI and even got to win a couple matches with pre-constructed decks. My current issue is that I don't know how to activate card abilities that require you to pay and/or tap. For example, Mistform Dreamer has the ability to become any creature type when you pay 2, how can I activate it?

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hey,It has been a little while since I looked at this, but I wonder what happens when you tab around the Forge window? IT sounds like the Java access bridge, which is required for this app to work, isn't enabled. To fix this, you need to go into your Java installation, which is usually c:\program files (x86)\oracle\java, or something along those lines, and you need to find the bin directory. Inside that will be a file named jabswitch.exe. You need to open that directory in a command prompt, and run jabswitch.exe, like this.jab switch /enable.It sounds difficult, but its' the kind of thing that should only be required once.IF you do that and it says that the Java access bridge has been enabled, the app should hopefully start speaking a bit more.I hope this helps, and that you can figure it out. It's a delightful game.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hi there, so I'm super excited that someone's working on an accessible version of MTG since I've wanted to play it for quite some time, and can't find anyone local to teach me. I have a few problems with the client though. I've downloaded the latest snapshot plus the preferences file, also I've put the preferences folder in the right appdata location. The file seems to be working on the surface because the game music doesn't play anymore upon launch, but it's navigating that I find a problem with. I try to use nvda+numpad 4 or numpad 6 to navigate, but it always tells me there are no objects. This is on the initial screen, where you can start games and such. I can't seem to find any way to navigate the screen, and when i nvda+numpad 8 to go to the containing object, I can get to the forge window, and I can get to the level where I have that window plus all my other running apps, but when I dive back into forge itself with nvda+2, I can only seem to find a system menu, and another object that says forge, but I can't navigate inside that object. I've tried this several times, making sure forge is maximized each time and still no luck. I admit I'm a bit of a novice at object navigation, so any help would be appreciated, I'd really love to play this.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

You were on the right track.  You just misunderstood the mana cost.  A cost of 2R means it costs three mana.  2 Mana of any colour plus 1 Red Mana.  A 2 red mana cost would be indicated as (R)(R).If the creature could b summoned, clicking on the auto button would have automatically tapped all the necessary mana.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Thank you so much for doing this! I am dieing to play some MTG again.trying to play the game, I have to say I am quite frustrated. I've tried playing a game and cant figure out how to do the basic things I need. Like for example I am on my turn 2 and played my second mountain. I have a creature in hand with cost listed as {2} {R}. So I tap my two mountains and then click on the creature. a sort of dialogue comes up askkng to pay mana cost. well I have two tapped red in my pool. there is an auto button and a cancel button. I try clicking the auto button. nothing happens.I navigagte all the way to my list of manas. I notice that when i click that it decrements my mana, so i click my 2 red mana twice so it goes to zero still nothing.very frustrating...could someone please do a live recording of them playing the game and saying how the basics of the UI work, cause figuring them out isa puzzle game on its own. not a game I am interested in.also in term sof making the UI more accessible, why not use Tolk? it would be really nice to get screen reader output when things happen, especially things in the log, cause I sure as heck dont like having to navigate to it everytime something happens. Also does GC work for anyone whose resolution isnt 1920 x 1080? for me it seems to not work.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hey all,I just wanted to drop a quick update on where things stand. At the moment the game accessibility is still being improved, albeit at a somewhat slower rate due to real-life worries and work. My latest efforts have been adding names to some components in the UI which lack them, such as the "start," button on the game creation screens, and the tables in the deck chooser. I've also been adding some controls to the tab sequence to make navigation of the app a little more fluid. At the moment the card details text field is tabbable, which makes it much easier to tell what a given card does.I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to work on the game log and displaying card stats and such in a simpler fashion. These are the two big areas which still need a little improvement.I've realized that I generally prefer offering live demos to pre-recording them, so have to apologize again for not having one ready. My friend Hadi has offered to do one at some point in the near future, and as always if anyone has any questions feel free to hit me up on here or on Skype or where ever.

I think it would be great if we could have forge and xmage both accessible since online play is  very exciting. Forge has the superior AI but xmage has a very good online lobby settings so you could restrict it to certain rules and suchGood news about xmage is that  everything is accessible about it except seeing the actual cards You could  easily set up lobbies and such.If we manage to find java developers to help us  improve xmage, that would be awesomeI know that people like ross have a bigger audience on twitter/youtube etc, so if you can ask for help from developers to put that final fix on xmage that would be amazing.MEanwhile though, I'm  just getting familiar with magic on forge and it is very awesome!

Ross,There is basic online play, but it's very much not the main focus of this particular app. That being said, there's another open source program called XMage, which is intended exclusively for online. Sadly it isn't accessible at the moment but if the developers can't be convinced to work on accessibility for it, I might give it a try myself. XMage supports Commander and all the other big formats, but then again so does this app, albeit mostly with AI opponents.

If anyone has any questions at all about Magic, hit me up on Twitter, I religiously play this game. That being said, this game looks pretty cool. I wonder if there are any plans for online play, otherwise that takes most of the fun out of playing Magic, IMO. I exclusively play Commander, because it's more casual, beginner friendly, and there's so much more variety. Thank you for working on this

What is Magic? That's a question other people can answer better than I can, but it's basically a game that's been around for almost 30 years at this point. The basic rules are available from this page, among many other places, but the complexities of the game take a long time to learn. It's easier to learn by playing against other people or, as with this app, an AI.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Hi All,I haven't quite figured out how I want to handle a demo yet, since I'm still kind of in general accessibility improvement mode. I Hope that people who are willing to give this a try on their own don't get discouraged by the lack of a demo, it's totally possible to play a complete game, especially if you're already familiar with MAgic. For the past couple days, I've been making small improvements to the deck editing aspects of the game. I added labels to the "Add basic lands," dialog, which is important when doing a booster draft or otherwise constructing a deck. I also fixed a small bug in the deck selection combo box, which should hopefully make it more pleasant to use now. I'm working on adding as much info to the card names as I can, so that in addition to tap status we can at least get mana cost and possibly type info announced without having to move to the details pane. That should speed up gameplay considerably. In a sense, the work on making this game accessible will never entirely be done, just because there are always places for improvement. I hope that it continues to be fun and enjoyable for people for years to come.

Re: Introducing Forge, an ACcessible version of Magic: the Gathering

Alan,I'll hopefully get a demo up this weekend, but here's a quick description of the way the UI works. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Magic, but I'll assume you've at least read the basic rules, or at any rate can do so if you feel like it. The Forge UI is basically split into a bunch of small windows. These run more or less as follows.Your hand. This one is obvious, it's all the cards you currently have available to play. Typically, you can keep  up to seven cards.Your field. This is where creatures, lands, and other cards are played. You can also find status information here, such as the number of cards in your library, life points, etc. Also in the field you'll find a set of phase toggles, which are useful for speeding up gameplay if you don't want to be prompted to play cards in certain phases. By default they are all enabled, which means you will be prompted to play cards in every phase. Fiddling with them is a somewhat advanced topic.Your opponent's field. This is pretty much identical to yours, except it's where their cards are played. They also have a set of phase toggles you can switch, for when it's their turn.Card Detail. This is where you find info about whatever card your mouse is hovering over at the moment. Most importantly, mana costs and card text are listed here. There's also information about cards power and toughness or loyalty, depending on the kind of card, as well as some less immediately important data about where the card came from and how common it is.Game log. This is important, it's the window where everything that happens is shown. It's also the most annoying, because at the moment it's basically a bunch of tiny text fields, and it's easy to get lost in it. You'll want to approach it from the right, as that's the bottom-most log entry. To make this easier to do, open the stack and then move right of that, and then open the log, as it shares the same space. The stack. This is where spells and effects are resolved. It's another series of text fields, though generally far smaller than the log. Most of the time, it's closed if you don't need to see it.Combat. This is a window which lists information about creatures attacking you, or which you are using to attack. It shares a space with the stack and the log.Prompt. This is where you are told information about who's turn it is, who has  priority for placing things on the stack, and so forth. It's also where you go to advance through  phases when you have nothing to do, just press Ok to pass priority or "end turn," next to it, if you don't want to be prompted for any of the following phases. There are a couple windows and controls which are less commonly used,  such as the dock and the card picture window, but those can generally be ignored by totally blind players. So the general game flow is like this… You start a game, which I will demonstrate in the demo, but basically involves selecting a game format and decks for yourself and the AI.You have a virtual coin toss to decide who will go first.IF you win, you decide whether you want to play first or draw a card, using the prompt window. You then get your first look at your hand, and can decide whether to keep it or to take a mulligan, which will let you discard it, draw another hand, and then discard one card from that hand. You might want to do this if you had no land cards, for instance. When it's your turn, you play cards by selecting them with the NVDA cursor, and then moving the mouse to them with NVDA-shift-M, or nvda-numpad-slash. This is necessary because the card details panel only shows information for the card currently highlighted with the mouse. You can check the details if you're ever unsure about what a card does, it doesn't have to be your card. Just click on the cards you want to play, whether they're on the field or in your hand. When you're done, you press OK on the prompt window, or end turn. You listen to the sounds indicating what your opponent does, possibly checking the log or stack window to see what they've played. The process repeats with occasional variations, going turn by turn.Basically, you use the NVDA review cursor to navigate the screens. Each little window is preceded by a title to its left, such as "Zack hand," or "Card detail." To the right of the title is that window's contents, whatever it happens to be.I hope this helps, and will definitely try to explain more in my demo.
