Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Finally arrived! Small Compact Amplifier for SB3
I've had one of the MGL Audio Labs Symphony amps for about 9 months now. I use it with the SB3. First, the integration is great - a single remote controls both units. Second, the sound quality is excellent. I'm using the DAC in the symphony. At the moment, the amp is driving a pair of Audio Note AN-K/SPes and the sound is clean and rich. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Devolo / Homeplug - noise on the mains
Tom, I have a variety of these devices including homeplug, UPB and X-10. I have tried listening both with and without and did not notice a difference. That, of course, doesn't mean that there isn't noise, just that I couldn't hear it. OTOH, homeplug works by using Forward Error Correction - that is, processing the data to add redundancy so that it can be recovered at the destination without error. This adds latency to the data path, so if you are using homeplug to distribute music, it is possible that the receive buffer might run out occasionally. -- Bob Bressler Bob Audio Note CDT-Two-Audio Note DAC5 + Slim Transporter-Spectral DMC-20-Kassai amp-Audio Note AN Es Bob Bressler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39102 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

This means that any M-Audio device designed to interface with your computer via USB, FireWire, or PCI/PCI-X is not supported for use with WMCE. Additionally, M-Audio USB devices designed to function without installing a driver (aka class compliant devices) are also not currently supported under WMCE. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 vs PC as a source
In my office, my sound system has been a PC running iTunes and SlimServer. To get the best audio out, I have a C.E.C. DAC that connects via the USB port. The DAC feeds an AudioNote M-1 preamp, Quicksilver mini mono amps and AudioNote AN-K/SPe speakers. I have always the quality to be fine for my office and I really like the convenience of the iTunes interface. Prompted by the discussion in another thread, I replaced the direct connection to the PC with a SB3 (connected via coax to the DAC). The difference was very positive. The biggest improvement has been to the low end. With the direct PC connection, the low frequencies were much more boomy and less crisp. The SB3 path sounds cleaner and more engaging. Im still not sure what PC software was in the path, but there had to be some as you can control the volume on the digital out. I had hoped that the PC would serve as a better transport, but I guess not. Ive lost the iTunes UI, but the improvement in sound quality more than makes up for it. -- Bob Bressler Bob Audio Note CDT-Two-Audio Note DAC5 + Slim Transporter-Spectral DMC-20-Kassai amp-Audio Note AN Es Bob Bressler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33724 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] MP3 Car FM Transmitters
In part it also depends on how busy the spectrum is in your area. In the San Francisco bay area there are so many stations that you have to constantly switch frequencies to find even mediocre reception. There are now several companies that make true iPod and Satellite Radio interfaces. They have a cable that plugs into the back of the radio (using the existing connector) and a female socket into which you plug the wire that used to go to the radio. I have one that works with all Toyotas and Lexus. taking a slightly different cut at it, with 802.11 you will get higher bandwidth and error free transmission - but you will have to go through the A-D to D-A. With FM transmission you avoid that but are subject to many different sources of interference. So, if you are starting with a high quality source or a digital source, the 802.11 route may be better. It is made up of latency which is the time from when the first bit is sent into the network until it pops out the other side PLUS bandwidth which is the number of bits per unit time that come through after that first bit. Both PowerLine Ethernet and CAT-5 Ethernet typically have good bandwidth. However, PowerLine stuff typically has significantly worse latency than its CAT-5 brother. Mostly it is the Forward Error Correction. You would most likely notice this by looking at the buffer fill levels. When the buffer gets to a 'low water mark' it sends a request for more music. In a CAT-5 network, the music starts to flow right away. In a HomePlug environment, there is a delay before the music starts to flow. If the delay is bigger than the music left in the buffer, you get drop out. If not, you will not notice it. Jeff's problem sounds different. Normally it sounds like things are OK. I'd bet that the problems are being caused by noise on the AC power line. The noise source doesn't need to be anywhere near the audio equipment - the power line does a nice job of distributing the noise all around the house. You might look for some correlation to other activities - washing machine, fluorescent lights, electronic transformers in low voltage lights (a common culprit). -- Bob Bressler Bob Audio Note CDT-Two-Audio Note DAC5 + Slim Transporter-Spectral DMC-20-Kassai amp-Audio Note AN Es Bob Bressler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30342 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Wired or not? (Newbie)
Jeff, Typically the issue with high latency is that the music drops out periodically - i.e. the connections are still there, but the new data does not get there in time. I guess that if the delays were really long, the TCP connections would time out and have to be reconnected, but this almost sounds like periods of data loss - how often does it happen? Setting them up is as easy as plugging them into the wall. They are about $80 a pair (you need a pair for the first link, and a single unit for any additional links). Depending on how your home is wired, HomePlug can introduce quite a bit of latency. (HomePlug uses Forward Error Correcting to reduce the error level - which adds latency on both ends.) If it high enough, the SB buffer will play out before being refilled. That happened to me in certain locations. Displaying the buffer level was very revealing. -- Bob Bressler Bob Audio Note CDT-Two-Audio Note DAC5 + Slim Transporter-Spectral DMC-20-Kassai amp-Audio Note AN Es Bob Bressler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30342 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!
Next up here. I am also on the amateur side, not professionally connected to music. My first career was in computer networking and I have had my home wired (or wireless) with high bandwidth since the 80s. I must have tried out 2 dozen different audio streaming products and technologies over the years, and the Slim Devices technology is by far the best. Over the years I have tried out many different types and makes of gear, and still have a lot of it in one room or another. My preference is for tube gear, so that is what has settled into my most frequent listening areas. I am partial to the Audio Note gear, which I think sounds terrific (although I know that some posters here have the opposite opinion). But there are also Quicksilver mono blocks, as well as amps by Audiomat and Spectral in use. Speakers range from Mutine Équations to 1980 vintage Klipschorns to Shahinians. Mixing and matching is fun. I am currently a vintner in Californias Napa Valley. I actually find many parallels between high end audio producers and high end wineries. They tend to be small, stressing quality over quantity. Differences tend to be subjective and often are a matter of style (leaving our flawed products in either space, of course). Price and quality are sometimes linked and sometimes not. The people crafting the products tend to have strong opinions. -- Bob Bressler Bob Audio Note CDT-Two-Audio Note DAC5 + Slim Transporter-Spectral DMC-20-Kassai amp-Audio Note AN Es Bob Bressler's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30141 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I had been using the SB3 with a CEC DAC and the Transporter sounds cleaner and richer. Very nice. (Not quite as good as the SB3 through my AudioNote DAC5 - but that's not fair). The only annoying thing so far - when I change a player setting from the slimserver web interface, the Transporter hangs up sometimes. I have to unplug the unit to get it going again. I discovered this when trying to find the RSS news feeds which don't seem to be there.
