Marilyn, mine is from Norte Grande and he was still married to the same
wife when he died at age 86. That's the trouble with Portuguese research,
so many with the same names it's just gets so crazy!

Convert it to Word and run portions of it through an auto-translator.
It says it's 310 pages, so that's a lot to translate. I don't have the
ability to convert it to word, but Adobe Reader DC says that for a fee it
 can be converted to Word.

I think the priest just wrote "Feteira" in the son's death record and did
not specify which one. It's more than I had. I was going back through some
of my earlier work trying to get more of the family group in and cleaning
up some loose ends, like the missing death on this couple.

It's amazing to read about things like land ownership, agriculture,
aristocracy, living conditions, etc. Most relevant to the people on this list
is the mention of various names. For example, on pg. 55, it contains a
description of a typical land lease using one of my ancestors' contracts:
The new renters, Bernarda Rosa, widow of Domingos António, and her son Domingos
António de Sousa during 6 years had to pay annually in cash 140,000 reis and in
goods 18 cheeses of 4 pounds each, 3 of 10 pounds and 8 barrels(?) of butter.

There are many other names in this dissertation so if your lines lead you to
the council of Velas in São Jorge you should search through the dissertation.
You may even find the design an ancestor used for branding their livestock!

Convert it to Word and run portions of it through an auto-translator. It says
it's 310 pages, so that's a lot to translate. I don't have the ability to
convert it to word, but Adobe Reader DC says that for a fee it can be converted

Yes, that's the João de Sousa Machado that I'm referring to.

OMGosh, Victor, this is amazing! I knew Bernarda Rosa was going to lead me
somewhere one day! LOL Her name was so unusual that I made a note of it and
eventually she turned out to be a greatgrandmother along with her husband,
Domingos Antonio de Sousa! Thank you so much for this info, I will enjoy

It's amazing to read about things like land ownership, agriculture,
aristocracy, living conditions, etc. Most relevant to the people on this list
is the mention of various names. For example, on pg. 55, it contains a
description of a typical land lease using one of my ancestors' contracts:

  * The new renters, Bernarda Rosa, widow of Domingos António, and her son
Domingos António de Sousa during 6 years had to pay annually in cash 140,000
reis and in goods 18 cheeses of 4 pounds each, 3 of 10 pounds and 8 barrels(?)
of butter.

There are many other names in this dissertation so if your lines lead you to
the council of Velas in São Jorge you should search through the dissertation.
You may even find the design an ancestor used for branding their livestock!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Death of Manuel Pacheco Dutra, Vila Franca do Campo, 1857

2017-01-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Thanks JR. I'm guessing burial according to custom is digging the hole,
sprinkling the holy water, and burying him.
I can't find his wife Maria dying in Sao Miguel Arcanjo in Vila Franca. She
may have lived with one of her kids and died in a freguesia over. The hunt
goes on.

The priest around 1883 recorded everything! He records which neighborhood
they were from (and says it was a neighborhood or suburb), which
neighborhood or suburb they were in, the spouse, who the parents were, if
there any kids...this priest went all out! That allowed me to figure out
they were from the eastern part of Achada, which today is Feteira and they
use the Santana church today.

It's amazing to read about things like land ownership, agriculture,
aristocracy, living conditions, etc. Most relevant to the people on this
list is the mention of various names. For example, on pg. 55, it contains a
description of a typical land lease using one of my ancestors' contracts:

   - *The new renters, Bernarda Rosa, widow of Domingos António, and her
son Domingos António de Sousa during 6 years had to pay annually in cash
140,000 reis and in goods 18 cheeses of 4 pounds each, 3 of 10 pounds and 8
   barrels(?) of butter.*

There are many other names in this dissertation so if your lines lead you
to the council of Velas in São Jorge you should search through the
dissertation. You may even find the design an ancestor used for branding
their livestock!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Death of Manuel Pacheco Dutra, Vila Franca do Campo, 1857

2017-01-01 Thread Philippe Garnier
Hi Cheri,

"Encomandação de costume" : Encomadação is recomendation to the soul of the
died personn. "de costume" = usual, what is the minimum.
See others records, exemple in the img 131, to Antonio Duarte (bottom
right) : "celebrou se por sua alma um officio de tres liçoes" = the died
person had a will where he said he gives money to celebrate three masses to
his own soul.

Best regards
