Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Primeira d’este
Jesse, what primeiro d’este refers to translates to “first of” or first child born with this name. Sometimes children died and the subsequent child was given the same name. Additionally, some girls were baptized as Maria, but they might have multiple Maria’s. Eg. Maria did Anjos, Maria José, Maria de Conceição, so you can see why the priest expands upon the number of children the couple has by numbering. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joao Franco Pacheco-Born 18 December 1850-Sao Jorge-Nordeste-Sao Miquel-Azores
Dan, there is a cemetery for Nordeste but if you are looking for someone in particular, you should check their obituary record to make sure they were not buried in the “Fazenda” of São Jorge. In many, many cases you will find that people from the islands were buried in a communal plot. This was done for practical and financial reasons as the island simply could not keep expanding to create additional cemetery plots and also because the majority of parishioners could not afford a cemetery plot. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] July 1900 disaster Santa Maria?
On a related note, I don’t know if your twins were exposts, but many children who were abandoned were given to wet nurses or other village women to take care of. Breastfeeding allowed mother’s to pass on enzymes and other nutrients that would greatly boost the immune system of infants. Deaths among infants in the old days was very high until the invention of pablum, especially among children who were given over to someone else to raise. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Botelho & Carreiro Family From Ginetes Sao Miguel
Hi, your post listing a Miguel Carreiro from Ginetes caught me by surprise. Miguel Carreiro is my 3rd great grandfather. I have more information on both him and his wives. Miguel's birth was probably listed as a foundling, however at a certain point in his life his mother must have come back and identified him. His mother was Maria de Estrella from Calhetas. Born 1801 and died 1873. She became e godmother of one of his children (Margarida) on sept 23, 1858 along with Francisco Moniz. At first I thought this was his birth parents, however, Calhetas is a freguesia that only has about 7 births a year. Her obit lists her age and when going back to the birth year, there is only 1 Maria and Francisco Moniz is listed as her father along with Ana de São Matheus. They are not listed as legitimate or illegitimate. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please -
Jacki, I hope this helps with Antonio do Rego and Maria Francisca. I looked at Canto's index for Faja de Baixo. They had 4 other kids that I see... Antonia Jacintha m. Francisco Rodrigues 3 Oct 1786 Francisco do Rego m. Maria Joaquinha 24 June 1787 André do Rego m. Ana Francisca 11 Oct 1787 João do Rego m. Josepha Francisca 18 Aug 1794. Maybe the marriage record of one of these other kids might help with clues to going further back with Antonio do Rego and Maria Francisca. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please -
Jacki, I tried replying to your post earlier, but the reply hasn't shown up on my device. The record says on Dec 3, 1781 in the Ermida of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, Thome de Medeiros, legitimate son of Manuel Fernandes & Sebastianna da Rocha (both deceased) weds Felicia Rosa, legitimate daughter of Antonio do Rego and his wife, Maria Francisca. (Both are natives of this parish) I found Manuel Fernandes marrying Sebastianna de Oliveira da Rocha in Canto's index for Faja de Baixo. The date year is too hard for me to make out because those pages have hard to read months without years. Manuel Fernandes is the son of Manuel Fernandes and Suzana Luis. Sebastianna de Oliveira da Rocha is the daughter of Pedro da Rocha and Maria de Oliveira. (Please double check the record to confirm) Look in marriages around 1705. Definitely gets chopped in half. I think they are probably seeing the 1/2 and thinking that is all there is to the record. My suggestion is to save the truncated image. Download another page and draw a rectangle on the image containing a full graphic of the area hat is missing on the bad image. When you send them the two, they may get a better idea of what is actually missing on the truncated image. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with a record from Matriz de Sao Miguel, Vila Franco do Campo
John, I have Manuel and Ursula's son Antonio marrying Maria de Medeiros (daughter ofAntonio de Medeiros and Barbara da Costa in Faja de Baixo on October 15th, 1717. Unfortunately, at this point I was stuck on both of these lines until I came across the Manuel & Ursula marriage in Villa Franca. Cheri, that was a typo. Too much vinho or fat fingers. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation of faint document
Suzanne, the first date is the correct date for the middle record; 28 Nov 1697. This marriage is from Santa Amaro, Pico island Dominos Nunes, son of Domingos Nunes and Maria de Terra (you should get a secon opinion on Terra) To Maria Cardosa, daughter of Francisco Viera/Vieira Valim and Maria Cardosa. I think they are fro Funchal? The others are from this parish. The record underneath isn't a footnote but a different marriage record that continues on the next page. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with names and date: Pico baptism
I agree that the mother's name is Agueda, but the "da" in front of the last part is throwing me off. I wonder if the "Rosa" might be something else. (Because if her name is a two part name like Maria Jose, for example, i think it is odd. So what I propose is that the surname could be Sousa or something a bit harder to make out. I think It would be a good idea to get more opinions. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dropbox question
Al, they would have to have Dropbox installed as well. Once they do, you would be able to right click on the folder containing your file and share it with one of your contacts. That person would receive an email saying that Al want to share a folder, accept or not. If you google share Dropbox folders on YouTube, I'm sure there would be a video to take you through step by step visually. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sending my file to a relative
Al, you should use a Dropbox. It's free and pretty easy to use. If the person who you are sending the file to has an email account, it allows you to share a folder online between the two of you. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
I wonder if it could be due to how FTM wrote the Gedcom. When I write a surname into my program I try to avoid the issue of screwing up the surname by entering the d' or de, do etc on the first line name. For example... I enter José de on the Given name of the FTM program. And Paiva on the surname. I wonder if by entering de on the middle name section is what is causing it not to match. The brother worked on the same plantation, therefore, this Raposo must be his brother. I will see if they have more information that can establish some sort of connection. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rapozo, Teixeira, Furtado, Cabral, Caldeira from Agua Retorta, Sao Miguel island
Hi Bill, The couple that Ria first mentioned are josé Raposo de Medeiros and Rosa Amalia de Jesus Teixeira. I think Ria made a small error in that name and called her Maria de Jesus. This couple is Ria's maternal grandparents. Ria's paternal grandparents married in Fall River, but I'm unsure of their names. Ria had asked for advice in trying to hunt down that marriage in Fall River, but I don't know if she was successful or not. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rapozo, Teixeira, Furtado, Cabral, Caldeira from Agua Retorta, Sao Miguel island
Hi Bill, Ria is my cousin. The couple she mentioned are also my great grandparents. I just needed to clarify some of the info about this couple though. José Raposo de Medeiros was Married to Rosa Amalia de Jesus Teixeira. (m. 17 Feb 1890 in São Jorge, Nordeste, São Miguel) both were born and baptized in this parish and village. They had the following children: Ernesto, José, Manuel, Serafino, Jacintho, Maria da Luz, and Senhorinha. Rosa Amalia never left the Azores. Jose Raposo was a businessman in Nordeste and had various businesses as well as operating and inn. Rosa died after a long life, so i don't think this is your couple. Good luck with your search. I agree, I think people from the Azores pronounce it Lopes (sounding like it rhymes with ropes), while Spaniards pronounce it like lop-ez. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa marriage translation help
Dolores, Lourenço and his wife are probably Betencourts. The record is probably using abbreviations. Also, a canada is not necessarily referring to the country of Canada, but rather a small road. Rosa Joaquina de B.Court apistente no lugar da Canada of this freg.a fa de Pays incognitos. It's the apistente or apintente where is would usually say morador that I can't figure out. Daniel, Rui Vas de medeiros is also my 13th great grandfather on my maternal side. Rui's father was Vasco de Medeiros Vasco's father was Gonçalo Roiz de Medeiros Gonçalo's father was Rui Gonçalves de Medeiros. Sent from my iPod On 2012-12-27, at 7:07 PM, Dano dpai...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Pam, Hard to say who the first actually was... Medeiros is a very common name and the only people that ever get recorded are nobility. Rui Vaz de Medeiros may have been the earliest recorded Medeiros to arrive in S. Miguel. He was born in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, and married in Madeira. Rodrigo Rodrigues refers to Gaspar Frutuoso's account of him as being one of the earliest settlers in S. Miguel. He arrived along with his wife, Anna Goncalves de Mendonca, circa 1474, and, Rui Goncalves da Camara, third Captain Donatary of S. Miguel. He lived at first next to the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperanca, and moved to Ponta Garca after the death of his wife. I list him as my 12th GGF. The Medeiros line dates back at least to 1200, in north central Portugal, where there actually is a place named Medeiros. [AZORES-Genealogy] Question about Terceira Island
I'm not that knowledgable about Terceira, but I'm wondering if anyone on the list is familiar with parishes from this island? I am looking for a marriage around 1703. Originally, my descendants married in 1703 in São Matheus de Calhetas (Angra do Heroism), but he was a widower, so the record just lists his deceased wife. I searched 50 years back in this parish with no luck. Can anyone tell me of the nearest other parishes in this timeline to São Matheus? (I'm hoping to find the first marriage in a surrounding parish). Sent from my iPod -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
