[AZORES-Genealogy] Alphabetizing Portuguese Surnames
I am sure this has been discussed before, but no matter how I searched I could not find an answer. I am working to "clean up" my family tree. I want to be consistent with surnames. I have some de Bettencourts for example showing under de, some under Bettencourt. I am tempted to ignore the de when alphabetizing, but my big stumbling block is my own maiden name. We went by De Salles. Always under the letter D. I am thinking of not using the de for index purposed unless I know for sure the family used it in America - De Costa, De Freitas, De Salles etc. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. [AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel M Soares-Hayward ca
Hoping someone out there will recognize this man and help me discover the connection. My grandmother had a half-brother named Manuel Soares who lived in Hayward, California. I have not been able to locate a baptism to confirm the relationship. Here is the obituary for Manuel Machado Soares listing my grandmother Anna De Salles as a sister, and an Anthony Marshall as a brother. According to other records I found, his birthday was 25 Nov 1872 or 1871. Death Notice Nov. 8, 1948, Manuel M. Soares of Hayward: beloved husband of Filomina C. Soares; loving father of Mrs. Mamie Lucas of Turlock. Calif., and Filbert M. Soares, of Oakland, stepfather of Mrs. Laura Sequeira of Newman, Calif. John Gomes of Hayward and Mrs. Adeline Parker of Oakland; brother of Anthony Marsall of Oakland and Mrs. Anna De Salles of Hilmar, Calif; also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A native of Azores Island aged 76 Anna Soares Bettencourt (my grandmother) born 11 Mar 1891 Santo Antonio Sao Jorge. Married Frank Salles in California Her parents were Joao Soares de Bettencourt, son of Domingos Antonio de Sousa and Maria de Bettencourt who was born about 1833 in Santo Antonio, Norte Grande, Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. He died on 31 Jan 1905 in Santo Antonio, Norte Grande, Sao Jorge. He married Vitorina Soares de Bettencourt, daughter of Manuel Jose de Bettencourt and Ana Severina Baptista on 28 May 1904 in Norte Grande, Sao Jorge (Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves). I have not been able to locate his birth record, but have verified both death and marriage dates If they were truly half siblings they must share a parent. [AZORES-Genealogy] Jose Borges Goncalves, Altares Terceira Baptism
I have been looking for this man's baptism to no avail. His parents were Gregorio Goncalves and Maria December de Jesus. He was married to Carolina Bettencourt on July 17, 1911 in Terceira. He came to Massachusetts in 1911, and returned to Terceira a few years later. According to his granddaughter, his birthdate was July 15, 1886. According to ship records, it could be 1884. Was hoping someone had him in their tree and could point me in the right direction. I have looked at all Altares baptisms from 1882-1887. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Reconciling records
Eric, I am trying to source the info you gave me with the records from Casais das Flores - your info says Manuel Jacinto Canhoto married Isabel de Jesus Encaracao 14 Jan 1847 - I can't find this marriage record. I did find this: Manuel Jacinto de Avelar [f.º de Manuel Jacinto Pimentel Canhoto e de sua 1. ª mulher Maria Joaquina ] c. 1847.08.14 c. Isabel de Jesus da Encarnação [f.ª de José Inácio Carvalho e de Maria de Jesus]. Gomes, Francisco (2012-12-18). Casais das Flores e do Corvo (Kindle Locations 14704-14705). . Kindle Edition. Note it is Aug 14 - is this the right record or is this another person - I am going crazy with all the Jacinto's and Canhoto's Gerri On Wednesday, May 29, 2013 2:39:26 PM UTC-7, luiznoia wrote: Gerri, That's what the record says, that Matheus Jacintho and Izabel da Trindade Jacintho are the parents of her father Matheus, however, my files have them listed as Manuel Jacintho Canhoto and Isabel de Jesus Encaracao I'd chalk it up to a transcription error by the priest. [AZORES-Genealogy] Surnames, middles names
How does one decide what to use as a preferred or primary name for a person? Baptism, marriage, death etc all list the same person with different (sometimes very different) surnames, middle names etc. Then if they come to this country, it starts all over again with different spellings etc. I was just wondering how experienced genealogists do. Is there a general consensus or rule they follow? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Casais das Flores e do Corvo in e-book format!!
Thank you so much for this information. It is a gold mine! I don't speak Portuguese, but find it very easy to decipher. Just want to make sure I am guessing right on this information: Manuel Antonio de Vasconcelos [43 anos, n. Does the e ja v mean widower of Maria Jesus Avelar, and the ja' v.a mean widow of Antonio Jose Ventura? Thanks On Friday, December 28, 2012 3:33:47 AM UTC-8, João Ventura wrote: Hello all, Finally, Francisco Gomes has published his 'Casais das Flores e do Corvo' book in e-book format. I suggested this to him recently after I saw the website for the book disappear from the web. I was informed that he had managed to sell all the paper copies, and I asked him to consider keeping it 'alive' as an e-book. Even though I own the paper version, I bought one e-book, because of one important factor that the paper version lacks: the ability to search. This amazing book for anyone doing genealogy in Flores and/or Corvo requires you to know the parish in which your ancestor decided to marry. With search capabilities, that doesn't matter so much anymore. Also, it was only possible to discover details using the name of the groom as the book was indexed that way. You've got a choice of sites, with pros/cons: - Amazon (pro: Kindle, con: only Kindle) http://www.amazon.com/Casais-Flores-Portuguese-Edition-ebook/dp/B00AQAOOF6 - Lulu (pro: cheapest, con: Win/Mac Adobe Digital Editions only) http://www.lulu.com/shop/francisco-gomes/casais-das-flores-e-do-corvo-extratos-dos-assentos-de-casamento-1675-1911/ebook/product-20563362.html - XinXii (pro: DRM-free, con: +$4.5 than Lulu) http://www.xinxii.com/pt/casais-das-flores-do-corvo-p-339506.html I bought the XinXii version, as I prefer to have my e-books in a format that I know I'll be able to open 20 years from now. If you decide to do the same, please be responsible when sharing it in your family.. I'd like to see the 'Famílias da Ilha das Flores (Vila das Lajes e freguesias da Fazenda e do Lajedo)' book be re-published as an e-book one of these days, and I don't see it happening if the author only sells one e-book copy. [AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge marriage records
Are the marriage records from Sao Jorge online at CCA? I was told by an elderly family member that my husbands great grandparents, Joseph Marshall Nunes and Mary Carolina Morais were from Velas. I have searched for their marriage record to no avail. (Looked at all of the Sao Jorge records online from 1892 - 1895.) Any suggestions?
