The Iberian Peninsula consists mostly of Spain and Portugal with a little bit
of south west France, as I recall. No Italian is considered to be from the
Iberian Peninsula.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: RootsMagic (genealogy software) Holiday Deal

2019-11-28 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
RootsMagic does currently have a Mac version, version seven, but it only runs
within a “wrapper” program can’t think of the name, lol so that it is
not truly a Mac program but will run on a Mac. There is a new version eight
that will be out sometime this next year that will be a native Mac version but
be aware that the current version seven will not run on the new Mac operating
system, Catalina. It simply will not open because Catalina only runs 64 bit
apps.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Sao Miguel Index

2019-11-22 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Everyone

I wanted to announce that there is a new resource on the Azores GenWeb. It is
an Index of the marriages for Vila Franca, Sao Miguel for the period of
1670-1799. This work was done by Terri Santos <mailto:kmacard...@me.com>, Joe
Matias, <mailto:joe.mudd...@gmail.com> and Fernando Pimentel

We thank them for all their efforts!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa Marriage Indexes

2019-10-14 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
Elizabeth

Cardoza is my husband’s surname. That branch of his family was from Terceira.
If you go back a couple of generations to the Azores, you can see that the
surname for a while was Esteves. His own grandfather used several surnames
(Cardoza, Souza, Esteves, and various combinations) until he settled on Cardoza
he immigrated to the U.S. The Cardoza/Cardoso part was from a maternal line.
Unfortunately, and to our dismay, you can NOT follow a surname line by name
only. The naming practices of the Azores are such that they don’t necessarily
take their father’s surname for each generation. In fact, that is fairly
uncommon. For a more in depth explanation of this to guide you in your
research, please see this article:

Cheri

I’m sure you’re right but I am someone that has two Manuels, both lived, and
had families…… Not sure if I’m the example you mentioned or not? When I first
discovered this, I assumed the first Manuel had died. I knew the second Manuel
had lived …. he married the sister of his oldest brother, Francisco, so I never
researched that first Manuel. Eventually, after being contacted by another
researcher, we realized that HER Manuel was the first one in the family, the
one I had assumed had died. (He had changed his last name to Rodgers, possibly
to distinguish him from his brother.) This was proven, by the way, with, among
other things, his obituary that listed all his siblings, including my Francisco
Pereira da Rosa! Pretty exciting and a reminder to all of us to keep an open
mind and make no assumptions without proving or disproving them. Oh, also, this
family had two Maria Delfinas! Thanks a lot, da Rosas, lol. I have never seen
this in any other of my families with Manuels.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Pedro Miguel, Faial Confession Rolls

2019-06-09 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Everyone

I wanted to let you all know of a new addition to the Azores GenWeb site. If
you have ancestors from Pedro Miguel, Faial, then you will be interested in the
newly posted Confession Rolls from there. They don’t cover all years, but many
years between 1853 and 1908. If you’re not familiar with these gems of info,
they are almost like a census. Each family is grouped together by address,
showing head of household and all other family members living there. Their
relationship to the head of household is also given as well as their age and
often, their occupation. They are a wonderful resource to track a family and
its members through the years. These files were generously shared by our
member, Susan Vargas Murphy, and are available for your viewing and for
download. Enjoy!

[AZORES-Genealogy] List of Seminary students

2019-03-21 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
There has been a new link added to the Azores GenWeb. It is a list of seminary
students that attended seminary in Angra from 1862 until 2013. Information
includes the student name, their freguesia, their parents, the age they were
admitted to the seminary, the date admitted, and any observations.

The link is titled, "Alunos do Seminário Episcopal de Angra de 1862 – 2013
<https://www.dropbox.com/s/ux0hq8xg419f7m1/Alunos%20do%20Semin%C3%A1rio%20Episcopal%20de%20Angra%20de%201862%20-%202013-c%C3%B3pia.xls?dl=0>”
and can be found on this page:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/general-info/links.html

When you connect to the linked file, look at the bottom of the page and click
on the middle tab, "Registo da BPARAH-2”, for the list of students. The
students are not only from Terceira, but could be from any of the islands. The
page is searchable by using Control+F for Windows, or Command+F for Macs.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Joao Bernardo - Are these the same parents?

2019-03-18 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
I don’t think having 3 sons with the same name is normal, but it certainly is
possible. I have a family with two sons that had exactly the same
nameManuel Pereira Rosa. Both lived and immigrated into California. So, it
does happen. One of those naming traditions/rules that gets broken
occasionally.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree (Genealogy software) sale through Mon, Nov. 26

2018-11-21 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
Speaking about using Legacy on a Mac… Cheri was correct in that you can do that
using any number of Virtualization programs such as Parallels, Fusion, or
Apples free Bootcamp. I use Parallels myself and find that it works very, very
well. It puts an entire Windows computer within your Mac. The deal is though,
that you buy the virtualization software but then you must also have a legal
copy of Windows to install on it it just as if it was a regular computer. With
this set up you can run any windows genealogy software program or any other
windows program on your Mac. If anyone reading this is interested or has
anymore questions, you can write me privately so that I could elaborate for you
the pros and cons. There are other options, as well.

To add to Cheri’s comments about a computer-based genealogy app versus the
online apps, I would say also, that I would rather have a computer-based
program. You have much more control over your data and don’t have to rely on
whether or not ancestry or any of the other sites are down or not functioning
correctly or any other number of problems that they could have.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Legacy Family Tree (Genealogy software) sale through Mon, Nov. 26

2018-11-21 Thread 'Kathy Cardoza' via Azores Genealogy
Ricardo

All modern genealogy programs will share data between each other and between
different platforms via Gedcom. It’s not a perfect process but generally moves
over most data. There can be differences, though, that will need to be
addressed and checked upon. Hope that helps.

I forgot if your FTM is for Windows, then yes, you can install it just as

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] IMAC Boot Camp Windows 10

2018-03-01 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Elaine

I’ve never used Bootcamp. I know the advantage of it is that it’s free, other
than the Windows OS you would need. A big disadvantage for me is that you have
to boot either into Windows or into Mac. You cannot easily share between your
Mac and Windows so you would be working in one or the other. It depends on how
you work. I’ve always kept my files on the Mac side but used a program on the
Windows side. I didn’t want to store my genealogy files, web sites, etc. on
Windows. You may feel differently about it. I believe it works fine other than
that caveat. I have always used Parallels which is excellent.

Sorry I can’t help more.

No, it’s definitely not a good thing! It’s a security issue with Rootsweb,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need McKiev FTM 2017 advice ASAP

2017-10-02 Thread Kathy Cardoza
E

Hmmm. They are not well known for their customer service. If you’re on
Facebook, there’s a group on there, very helpful.

As I recall, because I already did this, FTM 3.1 and FTM 2017 are two different
programs. So, they can both reside on your hard drive together. The catch is,
that when you use the 2017 version to open your database from 3.1, it very well
may change it (update it) so that it will no longer work with your older 3.1
version. This is how most programs work. So, the solution is to make copies of
ALL your FTM family files. Store them in a separate place from the older
version 3.1 files because you will use them in version 2017. After you download
FTM 2017, it will ask you where your files are. Find the copies you made, and
open those. That way, your original files in 3.1 will remain as they were and
able to be opened in 3.1 if you find the need to. It’s ALWAYS a good idea to
have backup copies of your files when you upgrade.

You don’t really upload your files to FTM 2017 ….. you just open the file you
want to use from within FTM 2017 (hopefully, the copies you made) and it will
change it as needed to work in the new version. The reason for keeping your
original is that, usually, once a file is updated for a newer version, it can
no longer be opened in an older version. A USB drive is a great place to move
your original files AFTER you make copies.

Hope this helps.

By the way, I did this and used FTM 2017 for Mac. For me, it worked very well
and I was able to upload and sync my family trees to Ancestry flawlessly.

Hi Everyone

I have added a database of U.P.P.E.C. Death Records to the Azores
GenWeb. This information was contributed by a person wishing to remain
anonymous, but is being shared to anyone who is interested in it. The
U.P.P.E.C. is another fraternal society that operated in California,
beginning in the late 1800s. These records are a gold mine of information.

They contain a lot of information! So much, in fact, that each record
stretches over*four images/screens*. So, be aware that, for each
record you are looking at, you should take note of its ID Number to
follow it into the other pages that contain additional info on it.
This is what you will find in these records:

*Page 1 for each record:*

  * ID number
  * Claim Number
  * Policy Number
  * Last Name, First Name, Middle Name
  * Month, Day, Year of death
  * Age at death
  * Place died

*Page 2 for each record:*

  * ID number
  * Birth date and place
  * Father
  * Mother
  * Council Number

*Page 3 for each record:*

  * ID number
  * Cause of death
  * Mortuary
  * Cemetery

*Page 4 for each record:*

  * ID number
  * Contact info
  * Certificate (cert # indicates that a certificate was filed when
the person died. That certificate was included in the person's
file folder)

Enjoy and happy hunting!

This is posted on the Sao Jorge Marriage Index page:

To report an improperly transcribed entry please feel free to fill out the
Report a Correction to The Sao Jorge Index
form
as many times as you like (one time for each entry in question).

That should do it for you. :)

[AZORES-Genealogy] **** Ribeira Seca deaths on Azores GenWeb

2017-09-08 Thread Kathy Cardoza
I recently received a set of files from Suzanne Edvalson that are her extracted
death records index for Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge. They cover 1644-1879 but be
aware that there are missing years that she has not been able to work on yet.
She plans to do that after other projects are completed. So, take a look at
these. Hopefully your ancestor will be among the ones in this index.

2017-09-06 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Thank you to Marie P. and everyone else that responded with their thanks about
the newest records on the Azores GenWeb. Just to be clear, though, I did NOT do
any of the work on these records. I receive them and just prepare them for
publication on the site. Sometimes that can involve a good deal of work, but I
don’t actually compile the records. Others do that and should receive
appreciation and thanks for that ….. I always credit whoever contributed the
files. I’m just glad that the Azores GenWeb is a place where all these helpful
records can be shared with everyone!

I would like to encourage everyone, especially folks new to researching, to
check out the Research Aids on the Azores GenWeb. There is a considerable
amount of very helpful information to make your research tasks easier.

[AZORES-Genealogy] 2017 Azores Genealogy Conference

2017-09-02 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Well, the latest Azores conference concluded yesterday. I attended, and felt
that Cheri Mello and Rosemarie Capodicci did a fabulous job organizing all the
classes and materials. I saw nothing but big smiles on everyone’s faces and
heard many comments about how much was learned from the classes and individual
help folks received. As an added bonus, you get to meet new friends you’ve
shared emails or postings with and, of course, spend time and swap stories with
friends you’ve met before.

Thank you both for all you do to further our Azorean research and for to help
our little community! Your work is very much appreciated!

[AZORES-Genealogy] UPEC Membership records on Azores GenWeb

2017-09-02 Thread Kathy Cardoza
On my recent trip to Salt Lake City’s Family History Library for the Azores
Genealogy Conference, I completed digitizing the remainder of the UPEC
Membership Records. The collection is now complete on the Azores GenWeb site.

If you’re not familiar with these records ….. they are for California ancestors
only. The UPEC is a fraternal society that many of our ancestors joined for the
insurance benefits as well as the socializing with others from their country of
origin. They list men only but mothers, wives, children, etc. may be listed as
their beneficiary. They can be an important resource for finding out the
details of where your ancestor came from. Go here to find out more (you may
want to copy and paste the links):
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/fraternal-societies/

The records are listed here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/fraternal-societies/upec-records.html

New records recently added:

San Leandro #55, E. Oakland, Madera, Sonora, Valona, Newcastle, Folsom.
Roseville, Guadalupe, Santa Maria, Crockett, Gilroy, Chico, Palo Alto, Mt.
View, Santa Maria, Newman, Point Loma, San Juan Baptista, Vacaville, Vallejo,
Los Banos, Turlock, Lincoln, Castroville, Atwater, Fort Bragg, Felton, Oakland
#82, Oakley, S. San Francisco, Greenview and Etna, Rodeo, Elmhurst, E. San
Jose, San Luis Obispo, Martinez, and Napa.

Enjoy!
Good luck and happy hunting!

[AZORES-Genealogy] *****Sao Jorge Marriage Index online

2017-08-15 Thread Kathy Cardoza
it is my pleasure to announce a major, new addition to the Azores GenWeb …… the
Sao Jorge Marriage Index. This has been a long and difficult project undertaken
by a group of dedicated researchers and coordinated by Jeremy Berry-Cahn. This
index covers all 11 freguesias of Sao Jorge and is a searchable PDF. Every
effort has been made to insure accuracy. Please use any index as a starting
point only, and always verify with the original record. If you find this index
to be helpful, please express your appreciation to all the volunteers who gave
so much of their time and efforts to it.

I honestly don’t know the answer to your question. The indexes were submitted
to me and they were put on the Azores GenWeb as a TOOL to help researchers. I
would use them as just that, a tool or aid to finding your ancestors. If there
are errors, I’m sorry there are. But, honestly, most indexes, many online, have
errors in them. Thank you for pointing it out.

You should be able to right-click on the file you want to save, and pick the
appropriate thing from the menu. I'm not a Windows person so I can't help you
with software suggestions. But at least this will get the image saved to your
computer. Be sure to note where it goes. :)

[AZORES-Genealogy] ****New indexes and databases added to Azores GenWeb site!

2017-08-01 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Hi Everyone

I have added some important new resources to the Azores GenWeb site.

First, is a database for Flamengos, Pico, contributed by Martine FERRERE:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/faial/flamengos-database/

This is particularly helpful as Flamengos was not included in the University
of Minho Database.

Second, is a set of Indexes contributed by Igor Espínola de França for the
older records of the council, São Roque do Pico. These are the earliest records
and some go back into the 1500s! They are available here as searchable PDFs:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/pico/pico-indexes/

<http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/pico/pico-indexes/>

These should be a big help to many researchers. Thank you to the researchers
who have generously contributed their work!

E….. I wish I could help you with this, but I’m not knowledgable enough about
this Windows app to make an intelligent suggestion. All I can suggest is to
contact tech support with your concerns. That is their purpose in life, lol.
Good luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Has anyone upgraded old FTM 16 to new McKiev

2017-07-15 Thread Kathy Cardoza
E

I’m a Mac person, so I can’t say for certain ….. but I would think that the
upgrade process SHOULD be very straight forward and easy. If you haven’t
already purchased the upgrade, you would go to the site:
http://www.mackiev.com/ftm/index.html .
Click on the Store link at the top of the page. You may have to pay full price
for the upgrade, I’m not sure. There will be instructions for you to use. Most
probably those will be to install the new version and open up your OLD family
file in the new program. It will alter it to work with it which means it will
NO LONGER work with your old version of FTM. So, make a backup copy of your
family file BEFORE you do the upgrade. It should go smoothly for you. There IS
always Help available, if you need it.

Actually FTM 2017 is having its release TODAY! I have been doing the Test Drive
on my Mac and I’m very impressed with it! Works wonderfully!

Regarding upgrade price, found this: Now, it IS being released today so you
may have missed the cutoff for getting that upgrade price
I own an older version of Family Tree Maker. Can I get a discount on an upgrade?
Yes! You can currently pre-order an upgrade to FTM 2017 for $29.95. For more
information, make sure you are on the FTM Mailing List which you can sign up
for at www.familytreemaker.com .

These are your requirements:
Windows:
Windows 7 and later, including Windows 10, 675 MB hard disk space, 2 GB of RAM,
1024 x 768 resolution.

I hope this helps!

Yes Rosemarie it is. Legacy uses a program called Families that you can put on
your iPad or your iPhone. However, it takes a Legacy file and has to convert it
on Windows before you can put it on your iPhone or iPad.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dealing with multiple names

2017-04-19 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Cheri

I use the name a person was born with. In my genealogy program, it uses AKA
names and it has its own field to input it. You can also put quotes around a
name that is frequently used. As an example, my grandmother was Carolyn Rose
Goularte but she always went by Carrie. So, in Legacy (now up to version 9,
Woohoo!), her name appear like this: Carolyn Rose “Carrie” Goularte. If she
had other spellings of her name, such as Carrie Gularte, I would put that in
the AKA fields.

Unfortunately, not every genealogy app imports nickname or AKA fields properly
via gedcom. Every program does it differently …. there is very little that is
standardized between programs so there are no guarantees what you put in will
show up in the same way when imported into a different program.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Leonardo/Simas family in Humboldt County

Trisha

I agree with Cheri in that the passports are a great place to start for you.
You have an approximate date so if you find your ancestor, the records from
that time generally include where they were from as well as parents. It will be
a great clue to guide you to the appropriate church records.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] SPRSI Records

Yes, that definitely was my experience with The Freitas Library. They don’t
seem to be at all interested in genealogy research. For the UPEC, now something
else, they are a business, dealing with insurance. Sadly, it doesn’t seem that
the old records mean anything to them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] UPEC membership file question

2017-02-28 Thread Kathy Cardoza
All these records are for men. They consist of two pages. The first page is for
the men who are the members of the UPEC. The following page is the second page
of the record and that is for the beneficiary. Usually that is the wife, but
can be mother or father or even children.

In the case of #23 Emma Vargas ….. look on the previous page, fifth from the
top. Emma is the wife of Antonio D. Vargas.

For #85, Inacia Emilia Vargas …..she is the mother of Joseph Garcia Rosa
….third from the bottom on the previous page.

Hope this helps explain it.

The Azores GenWeb has resources that will help you get started. You already

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] tombo site

2016-11-19 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Liz….. Once you pull up the island on tombo, are you finding the freguesia to
click on? You have to drill down from island, Municípios , then Freguesia.
Otherwise, the passports will show at the top of the page.
