2019-05-23 Thread 'Herb' via Azores Genealogy
Does anyone have a good email address for a Melody Lasalle. I understand that
she has a very good data base of Azorean families who immigrated to Hawaii in
the 1800s.

thanks

thanks Margaret but something is still not clicking. Manuel Roballo was 62
years old during the 1930 California census and Andrieta was 44. If his age was
correct at 62’ he would have been born in 1868 and upon his arrival in 1893 on
the Monarch would have been 15 years old not 9. Those ages were often wrong
but usually only by a year or two maybe 3 but not 6. Still it is a very
promising lead. Many thanks to you and Cheri.

Thanks Debbie

yes I am familiar with this family using the name Vardasco. According to the
1930 California census Manuel Roballo and his wife Andrietta not Henriquetta
were living in San Leandro with their children including Joseph. Manuel’s
father Francisco or maybe it was Jose Francisco had come over to Hawaii from
one of the Azores Islands but no one can determibe which one. Maybe he used
Vardasco instead of Roballo when he came over?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for island and freguesia

2019-05-05 Thread 'Herb' via Azores Genealogy
I am trying to help someone locate the island and freguesia their gg
grandfather was from in the Azores. His name was Manuel Robello, that is
the spelling for past 100+ years, not Rebelo. His wife's surname was
Henrietta da Silva, may have been Enriquetta. Manuel immigrated to Pahala
Hawaii. with his father Francisco or Francisco Jose Robello. They arrived
in Hawaii possibly 1865-1873. Manuel moved to San Leandro which believe
is is Alameda County and died there around 1950-1955, age about 90, and is
buried possibly in Hayward CA. He had a brother named Joseph. I know there
are alot of great researchers in this part of California and hoping
someone may recognize this family. The 1900 census in Hawaii shows a
Henrietta aged 16 married to a Emanuel Robelo age 27. Thanks, Herb

There were some Raelezas living in Nordeste in the 1950s. I remember my mom
speaking of this family. More specifically there was an Antonio Raleza living
there. Herb

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Anthero R. Santos and Thereza Furtado, Fall River MA 1907

2017-09-07 Thread Herb
His WW 1 draft card has him born on 3 January 1888 in Ponta Delgada SM. I have
made several sweeps through the 20+ paroquias of Ponta Delgada as well as
Passports for 1901-1902 and Ellis Island arrivals. In 130 year old priest
scribble it's difficult to discern Antonio from Antherio or Anterio. He is
listed in ancestry in census records as Anthers Santos or as Antherio Raposo
Santos. His marriage record lists Ponta Delgada as place of birth. Tough nut
to crack! Of course sometimes it's right there in front of us and we simply
don't see it. Herb

It could be the marriage of my ancestors Manuel dos Santos and Maria
Sequeira Naborges, but very challenging to see padrinhos or parents names,
although one parent looks like a Fagundes

2017-05-23 Thread Herb
As best as I have been able to determine Margaret, my exposto Jose Sousa Silva
born 1871-1872 in NS Estrela Ribeira Grande, was probably the son of an Antonio
Sousa Estrela and Maria Rosa. I have not been able to learn who raised him or
who the parents of Antonio Sousa Estela were. I have poured over hundreds of
records. The answer may be right in front of me but I don't see it.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Ethnicity Estimates for Family Tree DNA

2017-04-05 Thread Herb
Cheri I checked mine. I am now 51% Iberian and 12% British Isles and 8% Western
and Central Europe. Also looks like I picked up some Jewish DNA with these new
estimates, 4% Sephardic Jew. It will be interesting to see the estimates in 20
years. By then I think we will really know with a high degree of certainty.
Like Mary Ann my family lived in Sao Miguel for 500 plus years. I was born
there. Not sure these or the previous results are clear and precise but it is
all very interesting isn't it? And like you said a lot depends on the control
groups. I doubt actual Azoreans were part of the control group. Herb

[AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio de Sousa Estrela and Maria Rosa, NS da Estrella RG, SM

2016-09-25 Thread Herb
Recently I acquired the birth record of a great uncle born in Sao Miguel.
He was my grandfather's brother. I was astonished to find their incognito
grandparents listed in the birth record. I have been searching for any
information on their grandparents for over 20 years and all of a sudden I
see them. At first I couldn't believe it, I didn't even realize it at
first. They are listed as Antonio de Sousa Estrela and Maria Rosa. I
have been searching marriage records from the time period of 1837 to 1884
in NS da Estrela Ribeira Grande. Hoping someone has this couple in their
records. One theory is that maybe they married after the birth of my
grandfather and great uncle. I haven't gotten to the Conceicao records yet

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Sebatiao Ponta Delgada marriage

2016-04-26 Thread Herb and Judi Silva
I'm trying to help my cousin find his mom's parents.  His mom was Ana F. Diniz  born in Fall River MA on 28 April 1919 and died on 27 Jun 2011 in Fairhaven MA.  Ana's parents were Manuel  and Maria Gloria (Ferreira) Diniz.  He thinks they were from Sao Sebastiao  Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel parish. They were born and married there. The CCA records end at 1911 and its early in the search but I thought I would check and see if anyone had any information on this family. thank you Herb

2016-03-19 Thread Herb and Judi Silva
Good morning, from Richmond VA My ancestors, Antonio Pacheco Sousa de Medeiros married Antonia de Pimentel on 11 Jan 1769 in Maia, Sao Miguel.  His parents were Manuel Pacheco and Barbara Macedo.  Barbara Macedo was from Fenais da Ajuda. Does anyone have these families? Its been a dead end for many years, because the records for Fenais da Ajuda after this period exist in other parishes. thank you in advance and have a great weekendHerb

[AZORES-Genealogy] Beautiful Reunion Story

2016-02-26 Thread Herb
Laura that's a great story. God works through people and often in mysterious
ways. You mentioned your mom is French Canadian. I don't know much about this
DNA stuff, only the basics I guess, but my wife is French Canadian and she's
had a Family Finder DNA test done. I have done some research on her lines and
so has one of her family members. Send me an email if you want me to check
anything that might be helpful.
Best wishes, Herb

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Pedro Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Marriage 1668

2016-01-31 Thread Herb and Judi Silva
This is the marriage record, the 3rd down on the right side, of my ancestors Manuel de Oliveira and Maria Benevides from 1668. I don't think priests were listing the names of the parents of the bride and groom during this period, but can anyone make out the witnesses names or any other information that might help locate a baptism or the parents of the happy couple? I have some ideas but always good to get insights and input from the group.  Manuel Oliveira and Maria de Benevides were my 8th g grandparents  and had a daughter named Mariana de Viveiros who married a Manuel Fernandes on 26 May 1695 in Sao Pedro. This line is a direct mothers line from my mom to her mom to her mom and so on.   Thanks a lot.Herbhttp://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOPEDRO-C-1658-1717/SMG-PD-SAOPEDRO-C-1658-1717_item1/P22.html

[AZORES-Genealogy] Confession Rolls for Sao Pedro and Sao Roque

2015-11-12 Thread Herb
Hello, the confession rolls for Sao Pedro and Sao Roque, Sao Miguel don't
appear on the CCA site. Are they available anywhere? Short of taking a trip to
Sao Miguel can I get them by writing to the churches or to the CCA. Also I'm
curious if I wrote to the Bibiloteca Publica and Archive if they would provide
me with a copy of a will or records of an estate.

Thanks

I picked up the entire set of Saudades da Terra about 20 years ago at Sol Mar
for about one hundred dollars. It's worth checking there and could be less
expensive. For many years now I have looked for RR entire set but was only able
to buy volume 1 from a rare book dealer in London. The entire set will turn up
one day and hopefully at a reasonable cost.

I estimate that one of my ancestors was born in Fenais da Ajuda circa 1710, a
Barbara Macedo who later on married Manuel Pacheco who was probably from
Lomba da Maia. The Fenais da Ajuda records only go back to 1713 ( I believe
at that time it was called Fenais da Vera Cruz) and I have not been able to
find her through 1713. Where would those baptism records be kept? I am
thinking NS da Estrela, Ribeira Grande or possibly Bom Jesus in Rabo de
Peixe. Any suggestions where I might be able to find this Barbara Macedo?

No, if they are from Fenais da Vera Cruz and you can't find them, they are
lost or missing or blanked or page torn, etc. Macedo is not common to RG,
Estrela, but there are some in Rabo de Peixe and elsewhere. When and where
did Manuel Pacheco and Barbara Macedo marry?

Herb, I searched the marriage record 11 Jan 1769. Did you mean to write
Antonio Pacheco? It says he's a widower. When I looked up his first
marriage with Maria de Sousa 26 Nov 1753 in Maia (1742-1762-0079) it does
name Manuel Pacheco x Barbara Macedo as his parents. His name however
shows as Antonio de Sousa Pacheco. In any case, what I'm trying to say is
that based on his first marriage timeline the parents records are available
in Fenais da Ajuda as they start in 1683 and he first married in 1753...

Hello, other than the 2Joao Venturas in this group I don't think I have seenvery many familiesmentioned in this this group with the Ventura name. I'm hoping someone will recognize this family.I've been checking CCA records around the turn of the last century, 1900-1911. Trying to find Manuel Inacio Ventura and Nicolina da Gloria. My dad's name was Nicolau Ventura Sousa Silva. It's kind of complicated, because my father's grandfather was adopted and took the Ventura name when he became of age. [AZORES-Genealogy] Ribeira Seca Marriage

2014-12-14 Thread Herb and Judi Silva
I'm trying to sort through thismarriage record of Joao do Rego, possibly it's my Joao do Rego Alvesmarried to Maria da Assuncao 17 Sep 1774, Ribeira Seca. Parents ofbride were Joao da Costa Pereira and looks like Rosa Bothelho??? I'm thinking it is Botelho but difficult to make this one out. .I'm trying to establish a connection with this line for my gg father born 1872 in Ribeira Grande. Increasingly it is starting to become apparent that he was eventually raised by a Rego Alves family about 100 years later. I'm just trying to put all thefamilies together, which is never easy. This Rego Alves line is everywhere in my father'sancestryand eventually linksup tomy father'sgrandmother, whomhis grandfather married in Matriz Ribeira Grandeon 1 Feb 1892. So is it Botelho? If it is, then these Botelhos go back to Vila doPorto, Santa Maria and it will be a challenge to find them for sure.http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RIBEIRASECA-C-1756-1797/SMG-RG-RIBEIRASECA-C-1756-1797_item1/SMG-RG-RIBEIRASECA-C-1756-1797_JPG/SMG-RG-RIBEIRASECA-C-1756-1797_0105.jpgThanks, Herb

I served in the USAF for almost 22 years. A colleague who worked in the
American Embassy in Lisbon provided this information but unfortunately does not
have the names of casualties. Have you tried the more useful sources such as
ancestry.com, genealogy.com? I have an address for a military records

My biological mother was of Irish, German, English and Scottish decent, so
I am confident that matches of Portuguese decent come from my paternal line.
My DNA matches indicate that my paternal ancestors were from the Island of
 Sao Miguel, Acores.

The only information that I have regarding my father is that his went by
the name Bobby Moniz. He was approximately 23 years old in 1968 and his
family was from the Fall River/Seekonk area. He met my biological mother
near her father's home in Riverside (East Providence), Rhode Island, where
they briefly dated. He was never told of her pregnancy. She described him
as a short/stocky man with dark, kinky curly hair. She remembers he drove
a blue Ford Farlane. They spent time together at Sabin Point Park in
 Riverside, Rhode Island.

I would be interested in any Moniz surname lines with ancestors from Sao
Miguel who may have immigrated and/or lived in the Fall River/Seekonk/East
Providence area between 1940 and 1970.

[AZORES-Genealogy] No longer able to view records on CCA

2014-11-21 Thread Herb
Is anyone having problems viewing the records on the CCA site? I can
longer see them, they don't show on the screen anymore. My browser just
spins round and round but no more records. Its ironic, cause, I just wrote
to them a few days ago, to thank them for all the work they did in getting
them all uploaded and now I cant get them. LOL.

I'm also using Explorer and been having problems for several days. At
first it would take an hour or two to download a single image but now it
won't download anything. I cleared out the cache and rebooted numerous

Yeah it's amazing that we can see these records from the comfort of our homes
even from our Iphones etc. I spent so many nights and weekends at LDS centers
and the volunteers were awesome. They would dim the lights and turn them up if
needed to allow a better view. I'm grateful for the work that when into this
effort and I have written to express my gratitude. Thank you CCA and LDS
volunteers. Herb

Thanks Margaret and thanks to others who posted on this. I think this

were from Ponta Garca through Nordestinho I posted on this a few days ago

It's an unusual name Grou isn't it?. I'm not sure I have ever seen it. I

[AZORES-Genealogy] Age of bride

2014-11-13 Thread herb

This record the left side marriage. Was the bride 18 and groom 46? I've been
trying for several years to locate the brides moms parents. The brides mother
was Maria Mello. Maybe I'm searching the wrong date but it looks to me like the
bride Maria de Jesus was 18 in 1878. So she would have been born on or about
1860. Maybe someone with Mello ancestors from Nordeste can shed some light on
this.

I think I found the record. Maybe someone could validate this. Left side, married on 30 Oct 1757 Jose Raposo the groom, son of Francisco Lopes and wife Catarina de Deus or da Luz, and the bride Antonia Margarida daughter of Antonio Andrade and Engracia de Alpoim all of the parish of NS da Asssuncao. [AZORES-Genealogy] help with Maia marriage

2014-10-18 Thread Herb

Hi

Would appreciate if someone could put a second set of eyes on this record
of the marriage of my 8th great grandparents Jose de Souza and Theresa
de Viveiros. Right side of page. As best as I an make out they were
married on 8 Sep 1749 in Maia and the groom was the son of Manuel de Souza
who was from Capellas. After that it becomes difficult to make out any
additional information. I see some references to quaresma and baptism which
is fairly standard language on most marriages of that time

It also appears that Theresa de Viveiros was the daughter of another Manuel
de Souza ? but I cant make it out. The last name appears to start
with the letter F. Could it be Manuel de Souza Francisco? This is one of
the tougher ones for me but I am grateful that I can see the names of the
bride and groom, which is a wonderful thing. Thanks in advance for any
assistance.

2014-10-18 Thread herb
I am connected through Jose de Sousa and Theresa Viveiros. Their daughter Joana
married Manuel da Silva in Sao Jose on 11 July 1778. But Manuel was first
married to Joana's sister Maria who passed away. I read this in RR book awhile
back but can't remember exactly where. Anyway the Manuel da Silva and Joana de
Sousa line leads directly to my great great grandmother Maria Julia Silva and
great grandfather Francisco Mendonca. Their daughter Diana was my grandmas
mother. Amazing!!!Herb

In my researching experience, I have noted the following:

When people from the villages went to the convents in Ponta Delgada and
Ribeira Grande to have foundling babies placed with them, there was not,
necessarily, a connection between the foster parent and the baby.

As for the villages, if an unmarried (or widowed) woman was pregnant, I think
that in such small places where everybody knew everybody else, I doubt that
the pregnancy could go unnoticed. And, the parish priest, who heard
confessions at a time when people really worried about what would happen if
they died in a state of mortal sin, must have known what his penitents were
up to. I think that when a baby was left at somebody's door in a small
village, everybody knew, or thought they knew, who the mother (and maybe the
father) were. Sometimes these children might have been left at the doors of
relatives, but they would have required a nursemaid, i.e.a woman with breast
 milk.

As for names, again, there is no one answer. Babies who were placed with and
stayed with the same family to adulthood (as opposed to being shipped out as
servants from family to family) sometimes took the family name. Sometimes an
exposto took a name, e.g. Bettencourt, with no apparent rime or reason.
However, a closer look shows that the Bettencourts were a prominent family in
the village and perhaps it was an open secret that this baby was the
offspring of the squire's son (or daughter).

Infant mortality for expostos was much higher than among non-exposto babies.
The state paid a stipend for the first few months of life for babies placed
with nursing foster-mothers. When the subsidy stopped, the infant mortality
 rate rose substantially.

 Eça de Queiroz touched on this subject in his novel O Crime do Padre Amaro;
one of the characters made her living by taking in unwanted/illegitimate
babies of the socially promminent and arranging for their deaths. Eloise
Cadinha, a member of the List, sent me her notes on this subject, and with my
thanks to Eloise, I am enclose them:

Most of us as we research our ancestors will find an exposto or two. It is
indeed miraculous that they were able to survive to adulthood, to marry and
 to have children.

Expostos - a translation. A very sad situation.

The following is my poor translation of part of an article written by
Henrique Bras 1884-1984) in Boletim de Instituto Histórico da ilha Terceira,
 1947.

In the last three centuries there is a long list of filhos da igreja
(children of the church), also known at times as baptism records, of unknown
fathers and mothers in the parish registers of Terceira, who were often
baptized with the most noble or notable or the very rich people of Terceira
who stood as godparents. At a more recent time the number of children
secretly abandoned at the rodas (wheels) had greatly increased, and in spite
of the many recently born innocents who died when abandoned, and of the few
to whom the fear of discovery still did not keep them from strangling babies
before they saw the light of day. Providing the support of these children
who survived became on of the most difficult problems for the various city
halls on the island, demanding a new special tax...which the people agreed
was needed but not without grumbling and finding fault with the new tax.

On April 29, 1800, the Conde de Almada, Captitão General of the Azores, in
Angra, informed an official of the Royal Court that in the ten years the
cathedral registered annually an average of 97 expostos baptized and also
registered an average of 83 who had died! And this was only those engeitados
(abandoned ones) who had arrived at the cathedral to be baptized, those that
had been left in the Casa da Roda, and this record was only for Angra.

The city council continued without resources to provide for these children
and thought about creating a lottery for that purpose.

It needs to be said: with a population of about 10 to 12 thousand people,
there were yearly on an average 97 recently born abandoned children of
unknown parents, legally registered and of which 83 of these died --
 naturally by affectionate handling

[AZORES-Genealogy] Naming of Expostos

2014-08-08 Thread Herb
I'm sure this topic has been discussed here before, but I don't recall
seeing it. When an exposto was born and baptized and given to a family to
be raised, did he take on the adopting family's names, or did he use his
real parents names? Did the new parents always know who the real parents
were? These were small villages and everybody basically knew everybody's
business. It didn't take long for news to travel from one end of Mayberry
to the other, right? Herb

[AZORES-Genealogy] NS da Estrela Marriage 10 June 1792

2014-08-02 Thread Herb
Hello Everyone

Can anyone make out the word after the grooms fathers name in this
record. Groom was Luis de Teves and the father was Joao de Teves ???/ The
word after Teves I cannot quite make it out. It almost looks like
auzente. It is probably not significant but I thought I would check. I
know everything else in this record except for that word, which may come to
me later on. He is my 6th gg grandfather. Thanks and have a great
weekend.

[AZORES-Genealogy] adopted by Rego Alves

2014-07-08 Thread Herb
Hello

Can anyone make out the name of the adopted mother in this record

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1870-1874/SMG-RG-ESTRELA-B-1870-1874_item1/P185.html

left side, the exposto Jose born Jan 1872.

It almost looks like Thomassia Gloria? This woman and her husband Joao
do Rego Alves is likely the couple who adopted my exposto great
grandfather Jose de Sousa e Silva. The dates fit, his birth marriage and
date of death all fit. Thanks to someone on this list, who pointed it out
to me, I checked all the dates and they all fit.

Coincidentally 100 years earlier in 1774 a man also named Joao do Rego
Alves was getting married in Sao Pedro Ribeira Seca SAo Miguel. That man
was the great grandfather of the exposto's wife Cecilia da Conceicao
Pacheco. She married the exposto on 1 Feb 1892 in NS da Estrela RG. Any
theories or connections?

 Fascinating!!!

Thanks

Herb

[AZORES-Genealogy] Soccer in Azores (1915-1921)

2014-06-25 Thread Herb
Hi Karen, my dad who was born in the Azores played in the mainland in Lisbon on
a professional soccer team called Belenenses. He also played for a team called
Micalense in Ponta Delgada in his late teens. Later on when he was in his
early 30s he played for the Lomba da Fazenda team in Nordeste. I have spoken
with older folks Sao Miguel from that generation. They all tell me the same
thing, that my dad Nicolau was probably the greatest soccer player to ever come
from the Azores. This Ronaldo guy has nothing on him, but it was a much
different era. Professional soccer back then was nothing like it is today. Just
thought I would share. Herb

2014-06-05 Thread herb
Hi Eliseu I gave you the wrong date and location. Here is the correct
information

Antonio Jose Terceira Coelho was born in Se Angra do Heroismo, Terceira and
married Jacinta Rosa of Conceicao Ribeira Grande on 10 Nov 1817 in Conceicao
Ribeira Grande Sao Miguel. The. Conceicao marriage records are not up on the
site yet. I know Rick Pimentel had said he had access to some of the Conceicao
marriages. Sorry about the wrong date. Jacinta was the daughter of Luis de
Teves Ferreira of NS da Estrela and Maria Joaquina of Sao Sebastiao PD and was
born on 8 July 1798 in NS da Conceicao RG.

Antonio Jose Terceira Coelho ( is one of my 4th great grandfathers) and
Jacinta Rosa had a daughter Luzia Candida who married Jose Jacinto Rego on
14 Jan 1839 in Ribeira Grande. You know how Portuguese people are notorious
and unforgiving with use of nicknames, so coming from Terceira to Sao
Miguel, he was likely given the nickname of Terceira. Did the Rosa family
move to Sao Miguel from Terceira?

Interesting though that my grandfather moved to Angra in the 1930's from
Sao Miguel. Was there a connection there, who knows?
