Lisa,

I took my first trip to the Azores last year in July. We went to Graciosa
(home island) and Terceira. Here are some of my tips:

Finances:
Get a credit card that does not charge foreign exchange fees. One that
has a chip is also advisable. I got the Chase Saphire VISA and have been
happy with it ever since. We did not use travelers checks and I would not
recommend them. Also, do not buy "Euro" loaded VISA cards (pre-paid VISA).
I researched them and found them very poorly reviewed (unable to be used
and drained of funds). Be sure to talk to your bank. Ask them if your ATM
card can be used in Portugal. Give them your travel dates to ensure you
have no problems when traveling. Also do the same for your credit card. I
found agriculture credit unions on Terceira and Graciosa which did not charge
for withdrawals. Your bank or credit union may be able to help with ATMs
which you could utilize without charge.

Phone:
We got our iPhones unlocked by Verizon. With them being unlocked and
enrolled for global usage, we could use them in the Azores. This would,
however, be expensive. We ensured data was turned off (cellular data off).
Upon arriving, we went to a Vodafone store in Angra. We were able to buy a
pre-paid SIM card and put it into one of our iPhones. This gave us a phone
in the Azores with a local number from which we could call a taxi (we had
our favorite drivers) and relatives. In many cases, you can call someone and
hang up after one ring and they will call you back. This worked very
well in Terceira.

Accommodations:
We used Home Away to book a great house on Terceira. It was only 70 euros
a night. Here is a link to the house ( _http://www.homeaway.com/
vacation-rental/p1309665? flspusage=fl_
(http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p1309665?flspusage=fl) ). It was a
great location out in the "country" in
Porto Martin. Not the center of activity, but we liked the quiet and access
to the water.

Sata:
Schedules are simply concepts of when a plane might arrive or depart. Be
flexible and be sure to contact Sata directly checking for delays. The web
site and phone can give quite different results. We were delayed on
arrival and missed a connecting flight. We were then delay

Hello Bill,
I remember that I wrote to you last year before you went with some advice for
taking young people to the AzoresI see now that we must have just missed
you as we were on the flight that left one day early OUT of Oakland to Terceira
(July 20) and were on the Atlas Air plane. We got a call mid-week that our
plane would not be leaving on the Monday but on Sundaywhich took a little
shuffling. We did end up enjoying the extra time on Terceira but on the way
back home, our plane started to have mechanical problems when we were way out
on the oceanI have never been so scared! We had to turn back and then
circle for quite awhile to burn off fuel. Sata put us up in a great place
Quinta do Martelo, so there was a silver lining, but not sure if I am over the
scare yet! Some of us fell asleep after the plane took off and woke up to the
realization that there was something very wrong. Our little ten year old
grandson smiled and said "Oh yeah, we are going back!!".the bliss of youth!
I hear that there are other airlines going in there now which I think will be
a good thing!

Good tips on the SIM card, I have never figured that one out. It would have
been nice to have a phone sometimes. We just accessed our email and the web
when we were in the hotels or anyplace free wifi. We had the same experience
with American Expressalmost no one took it. Our Visa was usually good
except sometimes my husband was convinced that it was not that it did not work,
but that they really wanted cash instead:)

I think the bulls on a rope pretty much run all summer, not just in
Altaresyou just have to find out what town will be having the festivities.
We have always managed to see one on the several trips that we have made.
Finding a safe place to view this can be trickywe have had help from both
taxi drivers and twice from a wonderful guide that we hired, Mario Rego, on
Terceira.

As you say Bill.you just have to hang loose and be flexibleit all works
out in the end:)

The Portuguese side of the ATMs may not charge, but I did get charged on
withdrawals from non-credit union banks (Banco Espírito Santo is my example).

8-10 days. I am planning to go to Terceira for research and to visit the
ancestral homelands on Sao Jorge (Calheta and Topo areas) and Pico (Lajes do
Pico areas).

I'd love to hear any suggestions on places to stay, places to eat, drivers
to hire, renting a scooter, not to be missed sights or events, research
tips, using the archives, wifi connection, cell phone tips, use of travelers
cheques vs credit cards, gifts to take with me and recommended items to
bring back etc.

Also, if anyone else on the list is planning a trip around that time, it
would be fun to meet up.

Please feel free to post to the list or email me privately.

Lisa,
I took my first trip to the Azores last year in July.  We went to Graciosa
(home island) and Terceira.  Here are some of my tips:
Finances:Get a credit card that does not charge foreign exchange fees.  One
that has a chip is also advisable.  I got the Chase Saphire VISA and have been
happy with it ever since.  We did not use travelers checks and I would not
recommend them.  Also, do not buy "Euro" loaded VISA cards (pre-paid VISA).  I
researched them and found them very poorly reviewed (unable to be used and
drained of funds).  Be sure to talk to your bank.  Ask them if your ATM card
can be used in Portugal.  Give them your travel dates to ensure you have no
problems when traveling.  Also do the same for your credit card.  I found
agriculture credit unions on Terceira and Graciosa which did not charge for
withdrawals.  Your bank or credit union may be able to help with ATMs which you
could utilize without charge.
Phone:We got our iPhones unlocked by Verizon.
This gave us a phone in
the Azores with a local number from which we could call a taxi (we had our
favorite drivers) and relatives.  In many cases, you can call someone and hang
up after one ring and they will call you back.  This worked very well in
Terceira.
Accommodations:We used Home Away to book a great house on Terceira.  It was
only 70 euros a night.  Here is a link to the house (
http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p1309665?flspusage=fl ).  It was a
great location out in the "country" in Porto Martin.  Not the center of
activity, but we liked the quiet and access to the water.
Sata:Schedules are simply concepts of when a plane might arrive or depart.  Be
flexible and be sure to contact Sata directly checking for delays.  The web
site and phone can give quite different results.  We were delayed on arrival
and missed a connecting flight.  We were then delayed by more than a day on
departure.  It all worked out, but staying flexible is key.
Hope this helps!

The people really are so gracious. A woman was closing up her shop, just
around lunch, and we asked her where a certain cafe was. As the directions
were complicated, she asked us to get in her car and she drove us there. This
was in Ponta Delgada, On Faial, our cab driver had sons in the States. Super
nice people.

Good morning,
Just wanted to chime in, about visting the Azores.
My husband and I, visited Faial and Sao Miguel, three years ago.
The people are so gracious and halpful.
Neither one of us speak or understand Portuguese.
We, didn't find that a barrier, because a lot of the residents have either
lived
in the states and moved back.
We, live in R.I., and so many people we met had ties to New England.
Enjoy!

Knowing someone on the island is a big help!
Just went to Terceira and Graciosa in July. My Aunt went before me and my
mother after. I have some quick tips!

The travel agent was near useless. Got all birth dates wrong, names wrong and
the sex of my son wrong. We found this the day before after insisting on trying
to check in the day before the flight. Took a while for US on the phone to
Lisbon to correct. Skip the travel agent. Book on SATA and use AirBNB to find a
place. We stayed in a nice house across the street from the ocean in Porto
Martin. Quite nice house with 2 rooms, full kitchen and huge yard for 70 euros
a night.

We got the Berlitz pocket guide and CD. Also used phone based translators. I
was able to get a SIM for my iPhone at Vodafone in Angra. I have Verizon and
called to have it unlocked before leaving. I then gave the SIM to my mom for
her Galaxy S5. Worked great!

I have more tips and need to write something up Let me know if you have
specific questions. Oh, I also got a phone book for all of the islands. I've
scanned in by island. Let me know if you want it and I can send directly.

Regards,

Bill

As an American expat in Portugal near Lisboa, I second Ângela. For second
language learners dialects are essentially different languages instead of
idiosyncratic extensions as they are to native speakers. Learn the language as
it is spoken where you want to use it. Assimil on line has European Portuguese
as does Michel Thomas the Basic Course. Enjoy.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Trip Assistance

2014-10-13 Thread Greg
Hello,
We went last year just after Páscoa, we connected with my grandfathers family
on Faial.
Our experience was greater and more than imaginable... with the help of all the
gracious people from this list!
There were several festas celebrating "Espirtu santo at some of the emperios on
Faial, we met more than 300 primos!

We flew from El Salvador to Los Angeles, then to Boston, flew SATA nonstop
directly to to Sao Miguel.

We used AirBnB.com for many of the accommodations and connected... to what I
call “todo mundo son primos” everyone is my cousin... the most helpful people!

Once there on Sao Miguel for a few days we met a man named Pedro, he is a cow
expert and told us about a special inner island flight plan, since we arrived
to Sao Miguel on SATA the offer was available to us as well, I understood many
of the business people use this service.

You can’t (at least at that time) book it online or even see it online. You
have to be at one of the SATA offices or over the phone.
They sell you a package, ours was $180 euros and we flew to Flores, then flew
to Faial (took ferry to Pico, and later took ferry to Sao Jorge, then flew from
Faial onto Terceira and later flew back to Sao Miguel. (Then back to Boston
with original round trip ticket)

Bear in mind that at first I didn’t really want a strict itinerary but we had
to create one to get the package deal... they helped us by suggesting several
routes, very flexible in the planning stages.

IF we would of just randomly flew when we felt like it between islands the cost
was about $80 or $90 euros per island “one way” so we saved bundle.

Hope this helps...

[AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Trip Assistance

2014-10-12 Thread lisahbskt via Azores Genealogy

Hello Everyone,

I am planning a trip to the Azores sometime next summer, dates are flexible. I
will go to Terceira, Pico and Sao Jorge.

I want to know about airfare, ravel between islands what festas are happening
when and learning Portuguese before I go. All recommendations are welcome!

I will need accommodations on Pico (visiting Lajes area) and on Sao Jorge
(visiting Ribeira Seca and Topo areas) and maybe on Terceira.

Has anyone used "Rocket Portuguese" Language program? It is Brasilian but most
of the language programs in Portuguese seem to be.

Thanks!

Lisa, thanks for sharing the cousins found story.   I had a similar experience
on Sao Miguel last May. Taxi driver found the family name in the village and I
met a few cousins and saw the old lava rock home. It was a joyful happy tearful

Wow Wow, that is really great. When we were on the island we too went down

Lisa,

We had a great trip ! 13 days in Terceira visiting with Shirley's
7000 cousins and one day in Sao Jorge looking for any relatives I might find.

I was concentrating on relatives of Isabella (on the Caetano side)
since she stayed in Sao Jorge and the Descendants list you gave us had her
husbands name and the names of her 5 children. We went to the Civil Registry
office in Angra de Heroismo in Terceira because all of the records for the
central group of Azorean Islands are now kept there and are fully
computerized. However, since the data we were interested in was old , we could
only get it in the Civil Registry in Calheta in Sao Jorge. They did call
Calheta and they sent us some information (not much).

Through some of the folks on Terceira who knew somebody who knew
somebody in Sao Jorge , we arranged for a taxi driver who was originally from
the Topo area and was old enough to possibly know many of the families in that
area. We flew to Sao Jorge (Velas) , met our driver, Antonio, and took him
for coffee at a small café to discuss what we wanted to do . At first, he
didn't seem like a very outgoing guy and we were concerned that he wouldn't be
as helpful or as interested as we might like to be able to accomplish our
mission. He later proved us wrong ! He said that he knew some people in the
Topo area with that name. Our first stop after that was the Civil Registry
office in Calheta. There were two people working there and no other customers.
It was slow at first when we asked for information but after a little bit (we
showed them the 2 old family photos which I figured were from 1894 and 1914)
they really got into it and were whipping out old tattered books and and
getting pretty excited looking for Goncalves family information. They found
information starting from Isabella's children down (4 of the five were deceased
(no surprise there) and we ended up with some information about Isabella's
grandchildren, and where they might live. At that point, our driver said that
he thought he knew one of them. By that time, we had been there about 40
minutes to an hour or so.

So we drove to Santo Antao (which looked like the end of the world to
me) and our driver stopped at a small store (really small) to ask a guy he knew
about the family. The road at the corner was Canada de Castanha mentioned in
the death certificate for my great grandmother, Victorina. The man said that
the house was still there but uninhabited. He also told us where to find one
of Isabella's grandsons. We walked up the road and took a picture of the old,
small house . There was a cow in front and I looked in the windows but
couldn't see much but Shirley took some pictures.

Then we went to the house where he said the grandson lived. In the
Azores, they don't seem to have doorbells so you just stand outside and shout
and hope somebody comes out so that's what the driver did and a guy looks out
the window and comes outside. We explained who we were and we were looking
for possible long-lost relatives. He was skeptical at first but then , after
showing him some documents and the pictures of our great grandparents, he
became interested. We talked to him at length and found out that he was
Angelo Goncalves, son of Jose Silveira Goncalves , son of Isabel. He is 72
years old, but he looked young, like in his late 50s, a nice-looking guy,
short and was friendly once we established our relationship. His wife had
passed away and he lived with his son in a small but modern-looking house. As
we were talking, his son came home for lunch – he is a bombeiro (fireman).
He's a handsome-looking fellow, tall and dark and quite friendly also. His
name is Antonio Goncalves. We took pictures and then Angelo told us where his
sister Natalia lived up the road a piece.

Went there, our driver Antonio shouted again at the door and Natalia appeared.
Introduced ourselves and she too became immediately engaged – friendly and
welcoming. She got out tons of family photos. Her husband was present – also
very friendly. She told us about her two cousins who lived up the road a piece
and we went to meet them also. In the meantime, because Antonio had expressed
to her how interested I was to see the Faja de Alem, she phoned her son to
arrange for him to take Roger down to the property. The Faja de Alem was where
our great-grandfather lived when he died.
(Note: There are several "Fajas" in Sao Jorge – these are small relatively
flat areas below cliffs

Hi Lorraine,
In my visits to Terceira, Joao Ventura has been the contact person that
knows what taxi drivers are very helpful and which to avoid. Before I asked
Joao for his suggestions, I had some not so good experiences with taxi drivers.
Joao also knows the places to eat where you can get a taste of the islands.
In Ponta Delgada, I have used Carlos Rego for the last 4 times I visited Sao
Miguel. Carlos speaks English, is very engaging and will share his experiences
as to what to see and where to go and where to eat. If you are interested, I
have his phone number or you can just stop by the taxi parking place across
from the Church in Ponta Delgada near the arches. Carlos is known by the name
"Sepata," or something like that. Just tell him I gave you his name and he
will understand that you are on a quest to not only see the sights but also to
see the places where your ancestors lived; the churches where they were
baptized and married. Carlos will understand that you need individual tours
and he was very helpful to me in finding the keys to locked churches and
getting someone to open the church and give me tours that probably were not
included in the typical "tours of the island."

I am also going May to Ponta Delgada, my husband and I, only for a week (my
second time). Want to go back to Nordestinho, Bretanha, Mosterios, and see
more.
Seems I am related to nearly everyone according to the Nobiliario de Familias
Portuguesas (on my fathers side). First man born in Sao Miguel, Nuno Gonsalves
Botelho 1504. It's good to know we are all a huge family. There is so much to
see, you will enjoy. See Nordeste and Nordestinho (they are so beautiful).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip in May

2013-04-02 Thread celeste perry

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip

2013-02-04 Thread Katharine
There are two ferry lines in the Azores. I've taken the Transmaçor
year-round passenger ferry among Faial, Pico and São Jorge several times.
Only one time did nearly everyone aboard except the crew have mild
queasiness -- on the Cais do Pico - Velas, São Jorge leg (crossing the
channel) -- although no one was heaving, just listless. All the other
times I've had no problem with seasickness:
http://www.transmacor.pt

The other ferry line, Açorline, that Nancy Jean mentions and runs only in
summer, has large auto ferries, which I'm told are far more stable (even an
Azorean friend whose tendency to seasickness precludes taking the passenger
ferry is able to ride this one safely). Unfortunately, their website seems
not to be online any longer:

We've taken the boat from Sao Miguel and Terceira several times and have had no
problems with sea sickness. We enjoy watching the coastlines and being among
the local people. Ferry travel between islands is great fun for people who
aren't prone to sea sickness. It's also significantly cheaper especially with
inter island baggage fees for flying although I think the overage charges have
been discontinued since we didn't have to pay any last year.

Do not travel the Azores by boat without a good supply of seasickness meds.
The boats are designed for cargo, not for people. They rock and roll
excessively.

I took Dramamine before a 4 hour trip. I had given the rest of the pills away
before we were even out of the harbor! The crew was very solicitous and passed
out sick bags and promptly collected the used ones which they threw overboard.

The bags were blue. We called the trip the Blue Bag Special.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip

2013-01-24 Thread ttcostadc

I was surprised by how current some people's connections were to the US. A
cabby picked us up from Horta - we never looked for English-speaking cab
drivers - he ended up having a son in the US (California). Also, when visiting
Capelas, I went into the bar by the church, across from the Whalers monument,
and there was a guy who was from Fall River, there. He helped me look for
family. Unfortunately we were not able to track any down.

Being in the Azores was so much fun.

Lorraine,

I think the rates go up in the spring through the fall, because that is more of
the tourist season.

Sao Miguel has an airport. Actually, all the islands do. But think to get
from North America or Europe to the Azores, you need to fly into a larger
airport. Sao Miguel has a larger airport (Ponta Delgada or PDL) and Terceria
has a larger airport too (TER). I think Faial has one which is Horta. But I'm
not sure. I don't know the airport code for that.

>From the major airport, you can get to any island by boat or plane.

You don't say where you live. I'd fly to TER and after my visit there, go to
Graciosa.

As for a taxi/tour guide, I don't know of any on those islands (although I'm
sure other list members do). I just went to the taxi stand and asked for an
English speaking taxi driver. After a couple of trips, I managed enough
Portuguese to use any taxi driver. I've used referrals from others for a tour
guide. One time, I decided to take a trip to the other side of Sao Miguel. I
found an English speaking taxi driver to help me, asked him how long it would
take driving there and back, and spending an hour or so looking for relatives.
I asked him how much he would make in 4 hours and that's the price we agreed on
for him to be my taxi/tour guide.

Lorraine, if you live in California, there are direct flights every summer
(May through September) from Oakland to Terceira.  These are the flights I have
flown the last few times I visited the Azores.
From Terceira, I have flown to Sao Miguel and have a great taxi driver I use
there.  Carlos Rego speaks English; is enthusiastic about looking for the
places ancestors lived and visiting anyone in the villages that might have more
information about the family you seek.
In Terceira, I have relied on Joao Ventura to direct me to taxi drivers that
help me visit the villages where my ancestors lived; to find information in the
churches where they lived; to see the sights they saw, etc.
In Faial, I have found taxi drivers (some better than others) that drive
around the island to see the sights and also to visit the villages where my
ancestors lived.
I visited Sao Jorge only one time and did, after some searching, find a taxi
driver that spoke English and understood what I wanted to see on this island.
The only place I took a tour was on the Mainland in Lisbon.  Since I had no
ancestors from this area in Portugal, I was interested in just seeing the
sights.

I have been reading the information sent to me and exploring the

older to see if the questions I have are already answered there. It is
a little confusing to me, but I will learn. I have many more questions
than when I started and will make some phone calls on Monday to get
some answers. It is beginning to feel that perhaps we have not made
enough advance planning for this type of trip. I will know more after
I make the calls on Monday.

Beside Terceira, there are two other Islands that we would like to
see, but because of time and wanting to have a good experience, we are
going to settle on one. For me, it will be the best place to research
family history for my family, in addition to Terceira.

I appreciate all you have shared and am continuing to learn.
